Our favorite anti-gay personalities Matt Barber and Peter LaBarbera love to troll the comments on 2007 Weblog Awards Winner Joe.My.God. In a post about Question 1 in Maine from last week, two commenters had a back-and-forth about violence and radical activism. Yes, we're angry about our loss, and some would argue that LGBT activists should take it to the streets. But advocating violence, especially on a public forum, and even when it's only a joke, only helps the opposition's "cause." They turned a blog comments exchange into something deserving the headline: "Gay activists mull terrorism against Christians."

Linda Bryant, founder of Charis Books & More, shared a story at the start of Thursday's event celebrating the bookstore’s 35th anniversary, “Founding the Future: A Conversation with Beverly Guy Sheftall & Gloria Steinem," moderated by Alexis Pauline Gumbs.

While she was living in Atlanta, Bryant said she started thinking of opening up this bookstore with books and resources for feminists and to provide a space for people to come and gather in community. So she wrote a letter to her friend, who was 21 at the time, and asked her for a loan to open this dream.

The repeal of Maine’s marriage equality law was excruciatingly disappointing, but not altogether surprising. As Jesse Ventura put it bluntly, "You can't put a civil rights issue on the ballot and let the people decide … If you left it up to the people, we'd have slavery, depending on how you worded it."

Indeed, history has proven that when individuals are given the power to legislate issues directly, the majority invariably terrorizes the minority. Time and time again, the mob has used referenda to repeal existing legislative protections such as Maine’s same-sex marri ...

We should be getting used to this. It was yet another disappointing, heartbreaking night of election returns as Maine voters overturned marriage rights for same-sex couples and an overt homophobe won his race to become the next attorney general of Virginia.

With Tuesday’s results, Maine joins 30 other states whose voters have rejected marriage equality.

In Virginia, Ken Cuccinelli’s win in the attorney general’s race represents a major setback to LGBT residents there. You can bet gay state employees will again face legal discrimination. And if you’re a gay or lesbian employee in the state attorney general’s office, you’d better dust off ...

Tomorrow, Maine voters will decide whether or not to keep marriage equality intact in the state. Things are almost dead even in the polls. Today, activists have gathered to rally at Monument Square to stand up for the rights of all Mainers. The No on 1 Campaign released a new ad on the 31st in which Jill goes from door to door asking for Diane's hand in marriage. The point? "Imagine if you had to ask 275,000 people to get married."

Wednesday's White House reception to commemorate President Obama's signing of the hate crimes bill was an emotional and poignant affair, as family members of James Byrd and Matthew Shepard shared the stage with the president during his remarks.

There was, however, a moment of humor. As Obama finished speaking, he stepped down to shake hands with those standing in the front row. Among them was Cyndi Lauper, looking fit and eternally youthful as always. I was standing nearby and caught their brief exchange. When Obama reached Lauper, it was clear that he recognized her instantly. "Oh, I love you," he said.

I couldn't hear what she said in response, but Obama ...

The 2010 games are actually scheduled for next summer in Cologne, Germany. But representatives of the games will be in Atlanta next Friday to recruit local athletes for the international competition.

Gay Games leaders will host a meet-and-greet at Mixx Atlanta on Nov. 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to give Atlantans a chance to ask questions and receive a discount on Gay Games registration.
On Tuesday, some of us will have our voices heard in mayoral, congressional and gubernatorial races. Others will vote on a few referenda. The question is: Which voices will be loudest?

I’d like to think that those of us who live in Maine, Michigan and Washington will vote first and foremost as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Having our civil rights and the well being of our families in mind, one would hope for a NO on Question 1 in Maine, which asks whether the state legislature’s decision to legalize same-sex marriages should be overturned or not. As we know, last week Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy blocked the release of the names of those who signed a petition to put the state's "everything but marriage" law before voters.

In his segment "The Word," Colbert turns the rhetoric commonly used by the anti-gay right around, exposing its ridiculousness in the process. "We need to protect this persecuting minority," Colbert said. "I believe you're born thinking gays don't have the right to get married or even b ...

It appears the constant rain these past few weeks have been enough to lift any drought concerns at Piedmont Park and all Class A festivals will be able to return to the park during their traditional times in 2010, the city of Atlanta announced Monday.

And that means Atlanta Pride, being held this weekend over the Halloween holiday, should be able to return to the park in June. But no decision will be made until after this weekend’s event, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Apparently Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.), who supports a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, reads the Blade! In a column published today railing against the attachment of a hate crimes amendment to the defense authorization bill, Bachmann quotes us!

"In this case, supporters didn’t want to pass hate crimes legislation as a 'standalone bill' because it 'would be vulnerable to dangerous amendments,' according to The Washington Blade, a D.C. paper," she writes.

Bronson Pinchot, best known for his role as Balki on "Perfect Strangers," recently recounted his experiences acting in certain films in an interview with the A.V.
AIDS Walk Atlanta stepped off from Piedmont Park on Sunday afternoon, as thousands took to the streets to raise money for AID Atlanta and other organizations fighting HIV/AIDS.

Before the walk began, there were heartfelt speeches from people living with HIV, activists, and political leaders like Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.). But the most moving part of the event is always the diversity and enthusiasm of the thousands who turn out to "walk the walk" for ending the HIV epidemic — people carrying homemade signs to commemorate lost loved ones; young people walking with their high schools, colleges, fraternities and sororities; and teams represe ...

LGBT activists in Boston will rally Friday in protest of President Obama's lack of action on LGBT issues. "'Fierce advocate' means you have to actually advocate," the promotional materials read. The focus of the protest will be Obama's promises to repeal both "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and DOMA.

The president will be in Boston to attend a fundraiser at the Westin Copley Hotel. The protest will be held outside the hotel from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. and is being organized by Join the Impact MA.
Update: the video has been removed by the user on the main YouTube site. I guess Richard Heene is still not in jail. I've updated with more description of the video, in case you cared. But those smart people at Towleroad downloaded and saved it and you can still see it here.

Images from last week’s National Equality March shared and posted on the Internet feature the energized and bright faces of the next generation of activists - the Proposition 8 generation. Not as prominent, if visible at all, are the faces of immigrant members of the LGBT community. As a participant in an Asian Pacific Islander Welcome Event and Summit pointed out, “Many of us are barely out of the closet – getting political is the last thing in our minds.”

I do recall my own experience as an FOB (“fresh off the boat”), trying to survive in New York City while fast-forwarding my emotional, psychological and social development as a young gay man. ...

As editor of Southern Voice, it warms my heart to know that Georgia's right-wing Republicans are such avid readers of our website and newspaper.

Longtime SoVo readers will remember back in 2006, when Karen Handel and Bill Stephens — who were at the time battling for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State — twisted themselves into pretzels in competing campaign missives that simultaneously insisted that they didn't read Southern Voice and don't think the paper matters, but still tried to use our coverage to smear each other as too gay-friendly.

Last Thursday, a gay man was brutally beaten in Queens, N.Y., and two suspects have been arrested in connection to the crime so far. The victim, Jack Price, was assaulted right outside his home. The first suspect, Daniel Aleman, was arrested Sunday and is being charged with assault as a hate crime. Charges are still pending in the arrest of 21-year-old Daniel Rodriguez.

Local N.Y. ABC affiliate WABC has obtained video of the horrific beating, in which Price suffered a broken jaw, fractured ribs, collapsed lungs and a lacerated spleen. He had to be placed in a medically induced coma. He is in serious but stable condition.

Atlanta's Morehouse College has enacted a new dress code for its all-male student body — including banning students from dressing like women.

The historically black college recently released a long list of forbidden attire, including sagging pants, decorative orthodontic "grillz," and "clothing associated with women's garb."

"The Daily Show" called out the mainstream media last night for not giving significant coverage to the National Equality March, which took over Capitol Hill on Sunday. Jon Stewart then slammed FOX News for its extreme lack of coverage of the march, which brought thousands of people to D.C. While FOX News was quick to criticize other media for not giving enough coverage to the tea party protests a few weeks ago, they only gave the gays three minutes and 42 seconds of airtime.
