So Where Were We? Part II

November weekends were marked by 30th birthday celebrations that captured the essence of the season....

Together with several friends, we hosted PCW's 30th birthday party at The Bayhouse just outside of Chestertown, MD.

Crisp weather, clear skies and the aroma of bar-b-que filled the afternoon air as we shot clays over the Chesapeake Bay and prepped for dinner.

A local caterer did the hog, Star Monograms of Annapolis did the custom cups, and we all made our favorite Thanksgiving sides with the intention of adding seasonal comfort foods that had meaning to each of us (I did this Sweet Potato Recipe).

The evening ended, or for some just begun, when we lit a bonfire on beach and danced the night away with iPods circling through the Bose dock.

Two weeks later, I hosted a buffet supper for WJR's 30th birthday inspired by Ina Garten's Barn Warming Barefoot Contessa Episode.

Cutting boards were piled high with pizzas from Spike Mendelsohn's We, The Pizza. Traditionally cut in triangles, we asked for the pies (Simple Cheese, Roasted Potato & Pancetta, and Spinach & Artichoke) to be cut in easy-to-eat squares. Accompanied by a mixed green salad, guests were able to serve themselves 13 bean soup in white ramekins and finish with olive oil or Parmesan cheese.

The buffet was set on a craft paper runner with piles of apples, pumpkins and gourds. Cutlery was grouped in silver mint julep cups and tall orange tapers were set in antique brass sticks.

As Ina would say, "How easy is that?"

Wow!

First, let me say thank you to those of you who reached out via email, Twitter, Facebook and blog comments to check in and say "hello."

Second, apologies for the long absence with little interaction. One of the great benefits of starting Southern Gent just over two years ago is the relationships and friendships I have found and look forward to continuing in SG's third year. Thank you for your support along the way.

So where were we?

The last few months have been marked by celebrations, milestones and exciting life changes; starting back in October with....

...the wedding weekend of friends, Ben & Ledlie, in Nantucket over Columbus Day Weekend.

Across four crisp, sun-filled, early autumn days B&L celebrated their nuptials with a Welcome Party, Rehearsal Dinner at the Jared Coffin House and a sunset Ceremony at the White Elephant followed the next day by a Farewell Brunch.

It was the details - the bride and groom's brothers as their only attendants, the wood place cards made by the bride's father (a custom furniture maker), tear-filled toasts of fond memories and well wishes, and intimacy of dinner at two long banquet tables - that made this weekend memorable.

The following weekend back in The District....

....after an exhausting week in Chicago for work, I returned to an equestrian birthday celebration in lieu of heading to The Plains for International Gold Cup.

The afternoon of day drinking, fried chicken and ladder ball ended with a backyard flip cup tournament that put the losing side in Halloween costumes of years past. Unfortunately, pictures were banned to protect the not-so-innocent.

That's October. November and December include 30th birthday celebrations, a trip Down Under and the holidays proudly decked with "retail red."

On the Bean Wagon

The first time I came across Bean's Lounger Boot, I was reading an magazine article around favorite things a few years ago. They quickly went on my 'mental procurement' list, but since I already owned Bean Mocs and 8" boots, passed on picking these up.

I really hadn't given them much thought until our boy JRS of Red Clay Soul started Operation Lounger Boot. These are great alternative for rainy days when you don't want to get soaked, lazy days when you just want to pull on your bean boots, and for those who don't know how to tie their shoes.

When I met Lacelliese at the Farewell to Summer Party in late-August, she asked that I contribute a post toward men’s fall style on her blog Vogue on the Range. I have to admit, that it’s hard to think about wool and boots and jackets when it’s still 75 degrees, but with the weather's recent turn it finally feels like autumn where we can dress both for the weather and the season.

Farewell To Summer In Pictures

The Written Word

A few weeks ago I received an email from ASC of Virginia, asking my opinion on what kind of stationery he should get - monogrammed, bordered, lined envelopes, font styles etc.

Growing up my sister and I weren't allowed to spend monetary gifts or use presents until the 'thank you' notes were written and checked by my father. So in a day of Facebook party invitations (guilty) and email correspondence (sometimes necessary) and electronic stationery (can't do it), it's good to see a college sophomore like ASC show interest in actual printed correspondence cards.

Humbled by his request, I threw him back an email explaining that I have three different, flat styles I prefer:

Navy Border Flat Cards by Crane via Fine Stationery

Formal: Border, lined envelopes, monogram, Crane. I save these for special occasions, close relatives, birthday gifts, engagements, births, etc. Because of the cost of lined envelopes, return address, quality paper, I tend to buy less of these in smaller quantities and since they are saved for special occasions, in turn use them less often as well.

Embossed 'Banner Cards' via The Stationery Studio

Basic: Ecru Cards, Embossed Name & Address. I stock up on these basic, but classic cards whenever The Stationery Studio has a buy-one-get-one offer. The paper is sharp, the name/address understated and the quality great for the cost. These are perfect for work, networking and quick notes.

Novelty: Small icon, color, quality paper. I've had a variety in the past, but in the future I am commissioning my cousin-in-law to do a series of watercolor bow ties with my monogram from her firm Presley-Greenberg Designs. I send these when I know the recipient will appreciate the image. To keep them formal and from being too juvenile, I keep the paper quality high and the image small.

Just Peachy

This summer we signed up for a CSA share from Bullrun Farm out in the Commonwealth. The first few weeks of "produce" were spotty - cat nip, lettuce, bok choy, lots of herbs in black plastic pots that more closely resembled weeds.

However, with all the sun and rain and then more sun, the last two weeks have been bountiful harvests full of amazing vegetables. This week's included our first fruit share of fresh picked peaches, which we decided to use in Ina Garten's Peach and Raspberry Crisp recipe.

While extremely juicy (I'd drain the peaces after slicing and pealing if you have a lot of juice in the bowl and before adding the rest of the ingredients) the fruit was sweet, but tart from the berries, the topping crunched like a cookie and vanilla bean ice cream was the right finish.

Here's the recipe should you find the perfect peaches while they are still in season:

Ingredients

4 to 5 pounds firm, ripe peaches (10 to 12 large peaches)
1 orange, zested
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 1/2 cups plus 2 to 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 pint raspberries
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup quick-cooking oatmeal
1/2 pound cold unsalted butter, diced

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter the inside of a 10 by 15 by 2 1/2-inch oval baking dish.

Immerse the peaches in boiling water for 30 seconds, then place them in cold water. Peel the peaches and slice them into thick wedges and place them into a large bowl. Add the orange zest, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons of flour. Toss well. Gently mix in the raspberries. Allow the mixture to sit for 5 minutes. If there is a lot of liquid, add 1 more tablespoon of flour. Pour the peaches into the baking dish and gently smooth the top.

Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, salt, oatmeal, and the cold, diced butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until the butter is pea-sized and the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle evenly on top of the peaches and raspberries. Bake for 1 hour, until the top is browned and crisp and the juices are bubbly. Serve immediately, or store in the refrigerator and reheat in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 20 to 30 minutes, until warm.

Sinatra Soiree

There are a few events each year that we look forward to and plan to attend with such gusto - Santa Soiree the first Saturday in December, Gold Cup the first Saturday in May and Sinatra Soiree the third Thursday of July.

Hosted by The Capital Club - a Washington social club of 100 men that's been around since Regan took office in 1980 - Sinatra Soiree is just one of the 6 major events the Club hosts that are both open bar and open to the public.

It's an opportunity to pull out the best summer rig you can muster - for ladies, 'Strong Cocktail' and gents, 'Summer Ahoy'. I rocked an ensemble I had planned on wearing last year until being called out of town on business. Bottom to top (shown second from left below):

#1: The proliferation of bloggers and party websites (Guest of a Guest, MetroMix, Late Night Shots) taking pictures for their respective sites and driving traffic by making everyone in their lenses' scope a local socialite (at least for that one shot).

Case in Point - here's a few we shots found of our friends in the last week on a variety of sites:

#2: The girls seem to be the rather tame ones and gents have gone from 'dress-to-impress' to 'dress-to-make-an-ass-of-yourself' with the pastel, embroidered, Lilly/Madras/Seersucker rig dominating and overtaking with seemingly little restraint. Counterpoint would call them 'peacocking' - present company/pictured excluded, naturally.

When the oil crisis in the Gulf Coast started, I posted a reader's letter and my response. Now, the the launch of the "Be The One" campaign I'm asking for your support and participation - this isn't about clothes, or koozies, or food and booze; it's about the facts:

Energy: Almost 50% of the U.S. energy supply comes from the Gulf of Mexico
Seafood: 2/3 of our shrimp and oysters we all enjoy come from the Gulf
Shipping: 7 out of 10 of the nation's largest shipping ports are in the Gulf
Wildlife: 40% of North America's duck, geese, swan and eagles use the Gulf as their flyway

I went to Destin for family vacations, eat Gulf seafood, drive a 4Runner (so know all about the energy the Gulf produces).

"I demand that a plan to restore America's Gulf be fully funded and implemented for me and future generations."

Presented by the nonpartisan, non-politcal advocacy group Women of the Storm, the "Be the One" campaign seeks to rally the nation through this viral video and demand that anything short of complete restoration of the Gulf of Mexico, it's coast lines and America's wetlands is unacceptable.

I thought it was due to the consumption of adult beverages on 'Half Price' wine night, but was reminded by my dinner companion, PCW, that it came from the Geico "Pothole" commercial, which I now can't get out my head.

With July 4th comes the summer sales and the retail worlds' shift from patch madras and pastels to critter corduroy and cashmere. While I haven't gone as far as getting all Shaggy Dog on y'all, below are a few things I've picked up or plan to across the coming months:

Saddle Up

After Tuesday's post, it got me thinking that when I was looking for a pair of saddle shoes a few years ago the pickings were slim.

With partnerships between Duckie Brown and Florsheim, Billy Reid's worn version, Mark McNairy's new interpretation, hell, even Urban Outfitters are now in the game. GQ has written about them and even the blogs are a buzz with north/south opinions on how to wear a pair.

Being a Southern staple and now a getting a nod from North, here's some of the more accessible and probably long last (i.e. classic) pairs on the market:

G.H. Bass: 'Burlington' for Urban Outfitters in tan and brown leather;
Johnston & Murphy: 'Brennan' in suede and nubuck;
Mark McNairy: for 'Epaulet' in navy suede with crepe sole;

Start Your Engines

I love a cooler. Specifically a blue one with wheels. And while I have seen previous versions/attempts at the riding cooler at trade shows and a few events, they all had weak motors, a short battery life and no actual "cooler" space.

Then I came across Cruzin Cooler. Designed after founder Kevin Beal went to an Indy 500 race where he says "they shut down the parking lot so everyone was carrying their coolers. In the same parking lot I was in they had one of those little pocket bike's with a motors and I thought I can get one of those motors into one of those coolers. And that's how it all started.' Beal came home and started to tinker with the two products with the end goal that it would hold a case of beer and 8lbs of ice.

Seen on the Discovery Channel and having sold over 45,000 around the world, the Cruzin Cooler can hold up to 625 lbs(!) has more products accessories than I could figure out, extra batteries and all the fixin's to keep you movin'.

While the price tag isn't the same as your standard Coleman or Igloo, ranging from $299 for 250 Watts to $799 for 1000 Watts and $150 for each Coolagon, it's not an inexpensive man-toy but one that will surely be pretty a hell of a good time.

Berry Good Beer

I first mentioned an Abita 'Harvest Brew' back in the fall and have been savoring the 12 bottles of Abita Strawberry Lager we bought due to lack of supply in the DC area. This is in response to Friday's post "A Letter From A Reader" in regards to the devastation in the Gulf. There have been conflicting responses to the post, so I hope this brings clarity and closure.

CIL:

You are right.

With the exception of a few tweets, I have not posted on the oil spill. However, I have become so infuriated with the situation that I honestly haven't been able to put into words where I stand and how I feel.

The previous posts you mentioned have all been after a particular event has occurred where I have been able to reflect on the cause, the outcome and ultimately the effect. In hindsight this is how I responded to Katrina and most recently Nashville, maybe it's a bit of denial for the current events around me, but nonetheless how I process major issues.

Listen, think, then speak.

This event, as you pointed out, won't be ending any time soon so it seems that much more important not to wait but to say something now. Posting your letter or my response on this blog won't provide some genius solution and probably won't to tell anyone something they didn't know before, but it does provide a platform to get how we feel off our chests. And if it accomplishes that one thing, then this blog serves it's purpose.

A Reader's Letter

I received the following letter from regular reader/commenter 'CIL' and with his permission am posting this for all of you to read. There have been no editorial changes. Pictures are from his letter. My response will come on Monday.

Dear SG-

As a reader of your blog, I take great interest in your posts about clothing, travels, sports, hunting and your take on and awareness of current events. I respect your distinguished opinions and perspectives and find them all quite entertaining and tasteful.

However, I must say that I am disappointed in the fact that you have not posted about the greatest environmental catastrophe in U.S. history.

In the past you have written about hurricanes, floods, and terrorist attacks so I see no reason for you not to bring awareness to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In case your readers who live or are from ‘above the line’ haven’t heard…

There is an oil well down yonder that has been spewing thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico for over 45 days.

There is an oil slick above the water and oil plumes underwater that have the capability of covering every beach in the state of Florida and make landfall as far up as the Carolina’s.

As an outdoorsman it has to break your heart to see wildlife pictures of ducks, pelicans and sea turtles covered in oil.

I know you enjoy a good po-boy, some boiled crawfish, but imagine years without it.

So as you post on your blog between now and August (the earliest date the oil will stop leaking), think about the times you have spent on the Gulf Coast with family and friends.

Think about the next shrimp po-boy you hope to have…
Think about a cold Abita beer with hot broiled crawfish…
Think about all that you love down in Louisiana and everything that is at risk…
