Known for their fresh take on seafood, Vegas Seafood Buffet is coming to the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance this Spring. They’ll be taking over the old Jerry’s Deli location in the outdoor section, right across from BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse.

This will be the third location for Vegas Seafood Buffet chain; the other locations are in Glendale and Hollywood.

While and opening date hasn’t been set, its safe to assume the grub will be similar to the other locations with a variety of fresh cooked seafoods and Asian inspired fare on the menu.

Rounding out the selection of seafood, sushi, and teppanyaki, look for churrasco (Brazilian-style barbecue), salads, and plenty of desserts.

While their Facebook, Google+, and Twitter feeds are a bit out of date, you can find lively discussions around the buffet selections on Yelp for the Glendale and Hollywood locations.

Bryan recently reviewed MB Post and learned that Executive Chef David LeFevre opened another restaurant in Manhattan Beach: Fishing with Dynamite. Read on for the experience...

Owner/Chef David LeFevre took over the space formerly occupied by Talia’s on Manhattan Ave in Manhattan Beach with his latest restaurant: Fishing with Dynamite.

Since it is only two doors down from his MB Post restaurant, LeFevre and his other staff are able to bounce between the two establishments quite easily. At Fishing With Dynamite, He returns to his seafood roots established when he was executive chef at Water Grill in Downtown LA.

The minimalist store front of David LeFevere’s new restaurant, Fishing with Dynamite.

“Under promise, over deliver! Integrity, Respect, Humility” are the words on Chef David LeFevre’s Twitter profile. Consistent with that theme, the exterior of the restaurant is somewhat minimalist with the building painted grey and limited signage. Even when I happened to see him assembling dishes, he said “Hi, my name is David, what’s yours?” Now, how many times has a chef greeted you that way?

Lots of indirect light inside

Inside, the restaurant has a very positive vibe. The interior benefits from an abundance of glass windows resulting in a lot of interior light. The staff was extremely attentive, professional and well trained. Water glasses remained filled and I was amazed that each of our plates arrived about 5 minutes after we ordered them. I was happy that our server was familiar with our dishes as well as the wine we selected.

Handwritten notes from Chef LeFevre

Fishing with Dynamite features east coast tradition with west coast innovation. Menus are created and printed daily and feature items from three “schools”: Old School (traditional seafood dishes), New School (items that the chef would like to highlight, and No School (non-seafood). LeFevre even has handwritten notes with personal messages in the menus.

The specialty cocktail list looked extremely intriguing. Here are a few of their selections, each priced at $12:

The BFG – lemon drop w/ tito’s, chamomile, honey, lemon & smoke

Rag Doll – fizz w/ old grove, blueberry, rosemary, egg & violet

Original Gangster – boulevardier w/ white dog, aperol, vya sweet & grapefruit

Craft beers dominate their beer offerings. With the exception of Duchesse De Bourgogne – Brouwerij Verhaeghe from Belgium, all of the others are based in the US. The 24th Street Pale Ale by Strand Brewing is from Torrance. Beers range in price from $6.50 to the Belgian offering at $12.50.

Squash rolls with rosemary butter

LeFevre pays homage to his mother by including her squash rolls with rosemary butter. They reminded me of the signature MB Post buttermilk biscuits; same caramel color and texture. Combined with the rosemary butter, they were delicious.

Peruvian scallops and Little Neck clams

We started out with two selections from their raw bar: Little Neck Clams and Peruvian scallops on the half shell. It was accompanied with two sauces: yuzu koshu mayo and remoulade as well as horseradish. I later found out that yuzu koshu mayo is mayonnaise made with fresh eggs and the juice from the yuzu fruit. The yuzu koshu mayo was a bit tangy and worked very well with both items.

New England Clam Chowdah’

The clam chowder was described by our server as “summer-style” and not as dense as some that I’ve experienced. It included a fair amount of carrots, onions and sliced baby white potatoes and it was more like a stew than a chowder. What surprised us is that the clams were still in the shell.

Loup de Mer with roasted fennel, carmelized onion and red wine reduction

Loup de Mer is a European sea bass that is finely textured, sweet and mild. It was grilled with the skin on and served over fennel with a red wine reduction. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed that dish. In fact, it was my favorite dish of the evening. All of the flavors worked very well and I enjoyed the crispiness of the skin.

Creamy polenta topped with parmesan reggiano and rosemary

<img class="size-full wp-image-10516" alt="Farro is an Italian grain. The beet chips were rather innovative.

The creamy polenta had an ultra smooth consistency and it tasted just like it included fresh corn. Parmesan reggiano, mascarpone and rosemary were other ingredients in the polenta. After tasting it, we both wondered if they made their corn meal in-house.

Spicy albacore tuna tartare

Chef Ray Hayashi developed the tuna tartare with kimchi furikake. Now if you know kimchi it’s typically fermented cabbage with other ingredients. On the other hand, furikake is a dry fish-based seasoning that is typically placed on top of Japanese white rice. It came out beautifully presented. Diced Asian pears were on the bottom, followed by the tuna and the furikake was used as a crust to top the tuna. House made shrimp chips also accompanied the dish. I enjoyed the sweetness of the pears combined with the saltiness of the furikake.

Key Lime Pie

My daughter ordered key lime pie because she knows that it is my favorite dessert. The graham cracker crust was thicker than most and a bit crunchy. It was topped with kaffir lime meringue. Kaffir lime is commonly used to make Thai curry paste. After sampling their version of key lime pie, I’d have to say that it is my new favorite dessert.

Fishing with Dynamite advertises that they don’t take reservations. I did find out from the staff that they limit reservations to two tables in the restaurant and make 6 reservations available daily.

Overall, the food was delicious and the staff was delightful and attentive. If you enjoy seafood like I do, you should pay a visit to Fishing with Dynamite. Even if you don’t enjoy seafood, there is plenty to choose from.

I tried one a couple days ago during a visit to the Grilled Cheese truck at the May observation of San Pedro’s First Thursday Art Walk.

But the brie-bacon-pecan melt was worth the weight. Certainly cheesy, the sammie was also salty and sweet; it was like a grilled cheese sandwich mixed with a sweet and savory pecan pie.

If only they served mint juleps to pair with the sandwich!

Torrance based King’s Hawaiian Bakery is well known for their fresh baked foods including cakes, pies, and of course their signature Hawaiian sweet bread. King’s Hawaiian has been baking “aloha” to rave reviews for more than 60 years.

We’ve been to King’s Restaurant and The Local Place more times than I can count but here are a few reviews if you need a refresher!

In a show of thanks to their customers and the community, King’s launched Project Mahalo, a philanthropic campaign to recognize four nationally recognized, charitable organizations that represent the Hawaiian way of sharing, generosity, and giving back without expecting anything in return. Following are the organizations selected to participate in Project Mahalo, along with links to their websites:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America – Provides careful mentor matching and long-term support to help kids facing adversity achieve success.

Family Caregiver Alliance – Supports and strengthens the work of families nationwide caring for loved ones with chronic disabling health conditions.

Meals On Wheels Association of America – Supports local Meals On Wheels programs that deliver nutritious meals to homebound seniors.

One Warm Coat – Shares the warmth by working to provide a warm coat, free of charge, to anyone in need.

King’s customers visited the Project Mahalo website to cast votes for their favorite organization to receive a $25,000 donation.

Keeping in the spirit of sharing, the three other organizations were awarded $10,000 in support of their community service.

Right here in our community, we are fortunate to have two King’s Hawaiian restaurants where we can enjoy their bread, fresh from the bakery, along with other Hawaiian-Pacific cuisine. You can find their menus online but you’re better off just stopping by and checking everything out in person. Get the bread!

* Disclosure : I attended the award Project Mahalo awards ceremony where King’s served a wonderful buffet of items from their restaurants. I’ll share those items soon! I also toured the bakery and sampled items during the tour. At the close of the tour, they offered all guests a gift bag with samples from their bakery and other promotional items. I didn’t receive any compensation for sharing the information above. Honestly, the folks at King’s are so nice (and their bread is so good) that I wouldn’t let them pay me to tell you about what they do.

I just got a “kare” package: a bundle of gourmet, flavored jerky from Krave Jerky, a Sonoma, CA based company. Their focus is on producing unique, savory flavors in turkey, pork, and beef jerky.

A Kare Pack from Krave features a sampling of their many flavors.

The Kare Pack included a sampling of their flavors and proteins: Chili Lime Beef, Smoky Grilled Teriyaki Pork, and Basil Citrus Turkey just to name a few.

I asked the street team that delivered the kare pack (thanks again for the personal service) what would be some good beverages to pair with their jerky.

With Cinco de Mayo coming up, tequila was quickly recommended to enjoy with the Chili Lime beef; a Chardonnay was suggested for the Smoky Grilled Teriyaki.

I’m thinking a nice pina colada would go well with the Pineapple Orange Beef jerky and I’d definitely put an ice cold beer with the Black Cherry Barbecue Pork jerky.

Black Cheery Barbecue Pork jerky could be a favorite for BBQ and Beer lovers.

With a wide range of flavors and proteins, interest in Krave Jerky is growing . It’s a portable, healthy snack (they provide nutrition comparisons on their website) that’s easily accessible.

Krave Jerky is available in South Bay Vons, Pavillion, and Beverages & More locations. You can find an outlet near you via their shop locator.

Bryan is always in search of something that he hasn’t tried before. During his recent ‘Spring Break’ trip, he got the opportunity to experience a German Restaurant and Brewery. Read on for the details...

My wife and I discovered an authentic German experience at the Zum Uerige restaurant and brewery in the Altstadt (Old Town) Düsseldorf, Germany.

Entering the establishment, we quickly discovered that you seat yourself at one of the many communal dining tables. Glancing around at the other tables, we observed that everyone had the same altbier and so we ordered a couple of glasses to start. When the beer was served, we were given two cardboard coasters. Our server drew two tally marks on one of the coasters.

Düsseldorf locals playing cards

Ordering food was somewhat challenging because the menu was in German. It didn’t help that our server didn’t speak English either. We simply used common sense and pointed to our selections on the menu. We saw ‘gouda auf brot mit butter’ and correctly guessed what it was: gouda on bread with butter. I refrained from ordering the platte dishes as they were 32 and 54 euros (or $42 and $70 US dollars respectively).

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, this is not the place to visit. Meat and beer is the dominant theme at Zum Uerige. In fact while we were in Germany, it seemed like very little attention was paid to vegetables and salads. While you can find non-meat dishes, you’d have to veer off of standard German cuisine.

Pouring beer from the barrel

Beer is poured using the old fashion way: with gravity. The barrel is hoisted by two people and mounted at the bar. They make a huge deal out of rolling the barrel on the floor and ceremoniously mounting it. Zum Uerige goes through a lot of beer and in fact, while we were there, they had to mount two barrels. I’d have to say that their altbier was my favorite. In fact, when I told the server that it was the best altbier, he surprised me by saying in English, “I know”.

Frankfurters

Gouda cheese with bread

Potato salad w/ hard boiled egg

Despite all of the dishes appearing to be quite ordinary, I was delighted by the fact that everything tasted really fresh. In fact, we had gotten used to skinless hot dogs and it was a delight to bite into a frankfurter to get that nice ‘snap’’ and release of flavor. The potato salad was mayonnaise-based versus vinegar and was served with sliced hard boiled eggs.

From left to right: schweinskopfsülze (pig’s head), mett (seasoned raw pork) and leberwurst (liverwurst).

The last dish was schweinskopfsülze, leberwurst and mett. I confirmed that leberwurst was indeed liverwurst. Schweinskopfsülze was formed pork with a gelatin surrounding it. After I returned home, I later found out it was “pig’s head”. Mett appeared to be raw pork and figuring that I would do as the Roman’s do, I ate that as well. Everything was surprisingly tasty.

As you can see, we did a fair amount of damage.

Fortunately, they served beer in what seemed like 12 oz glasses. With the foamy head on top, it was approximately 10 oz. As we finished one, they rapidly replaced the empty with a full glass and marked my coaster with another tally mark. Even before the glass was empty, they would replace it again. We finally made hand signals indicating that we’d had enough.
