Please please PLEASE make sure as you plan your trip to go with a responsible, legitimate Safari company. I suggest Dorobo Safaris based in Arusha, Tanzania. It may not be Kenya but they are environmental geniuses (I spent two weeks with them) and they completely and honestly respect the environments they travel through as well as the peoples who live on that land. Please look into them on google, Thad Peterson is a freaking genius!!!!!!! As far as airlines go look into KLM it's fairly cheap and you get a 12 hour layover in amsterdam if that's your thing!

Best way to search is to go through orbitz.com. This way you can search for multiple airliners at once and compare prices. My recommendation would be to continually check EMIRATES (emirates.com) for airfare - my sister came to Nairobi for $ 1040 in February '06, which seems to be a great deal. Plus, you get to go through Dubai, which can be quite fun. Hope it works out!

Are you horrible in science because plants and animals don't interest you, or because you're forced to learn specific and sometimes unrelated science subjects in a high school environment (physical and space science...yuck)? If it's the latter, you're fine (Even high school cellular and microbiology bored me to death). Many of today's high schools aren't set up to provide students with an adequate background in the sciences, especially ecology.

Majors (4 year B.S.) you should look into include Wildlife Biology, Conservation, Ecology, Forestry, Social Work, Environmental Law and Policy, and Zoology.

Willingness to travel and work for low pay sort of come with the territory for all of the above, especially when you're looking for your first few jobs. When it comes to Africa, you're likely best bet is actually to take a summer field course. FYI, Indiana University of Pennsylvania offers a summer course in south Africa every few years that you could transfer to whatever university you decide to attend. I'm sure there are plenty of similar field courses available at other universities as well.

hey =)
i'm a junior, and when it was the summer of my tenth grade year, i took a college course at a college called environmental biology. very good class. want to do EXACTLY what you're wanting to do, so this class pretty much told me about what the problems are in the environment and what future environmentalists will be working on to improve.
I highly recommend you take this class =)
Also, go onto collegeboard.com and make an account. If you already have one, then go ahead and research career majors. That helps a lot and gives you a variety of jobs you should consider.
Hope this helps =)

If you are horrible at science..this may be a hard field for you to go into. You will need at LEAST a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in wildlife management, biology, zoology, wildlife conservation or something along those lines. Different universities will offer different majors but all will involve classes relating to science. Be prepared to take chemistry, physics, etc. You will likely not be getting a paying job working in Africa...jobs in this field are HIGHLY competitive even in the US and jobs in places like Africa that are paying jobs are even harder to come by. You can do a lot of traveling by taking seasonal positions after you graduate. You may have to do that for a few years anyway to gain enough experience to get full time paid work. I have seen volunteer opportunities in Africa, but nothing that you would make a living doing. I suggest as much hands on experience as possible with the species that most interest you or that you plan to focus your study on.

I decided to take biology course at my early age. I was still in my elementary years then. I would suggest that taking up biology courses might help you realize your dream of helping and protecting endangered species and also protecting the environment as well. In biology, you will learn a lot about the behavior and characteristics of animals and its habitat. Understanding the relationships of animals and their environment will broaden your knowledge on this particular subject. It needs a lot of courage for an individual to make a concrete steps in the realization of one's dream especially if it involves conservation and protection of nature in general.

Hmmmm, seriously doubt you'll be doing much tanning! in the days, could get up to 16/18, but evenings get really cold. the city areas will have lows of about 5/8, but out in Oudshoorn and Blyde river canyon, it will be cold! not usually, but it has occurred, temps fall below zero. So basically, make sure you have layers and have at least one or two thick fleeces and a warm jacket. doubt you'll get into tshirts, but if you have layers on you can always wear one underneath...

but you should be able to get a little colour on your face, taking it the weather stays nice :)

That is seriously the middle of winter and the Cape in particular can be extremely cold. Snow falls on the higher mountain peaks in the Cape are frequent at this time of year and the Cape Winter rainfall is high - so will need warm clothing.
Johannesburg too can be really cold at this time of year although many of the winter days are moderate.
Kruger National Park in Mpumulanga province will probably be warm during the day but can get very cold at night.
You won't be getting a tan in the Cape at that time of year , nor in Johannesburg .
