According to Ian Pretorious, his wife originally worked for a company called Union Limited, and arranged 14-day long distance trips on steam trains. He said she had made all the bookings, done all the administration and marketing, the catering and sorted the bedding.

“It (the trips) would never have worked without her support,” said Pretorius.

A Class 24 steam locomotive, Jenny was built in 1948 by the North Britise Loco company in Glasgow. At one point it was known as the Epping Market Choo Choo.

Her coaches vary in age ranging from 1924 to 1953 and can accommodate about 170 passengers.

The train left the Train Lodge at 11.45am yesterday and rolled into Simon’s Town Station shortly before lunch.

To mark the renaming, a champagne bottle was smashed against the train as Ian Pretorius announced: “And we name it Jenny.”

Atlantic Rail is a private vintage steam train operator company which is run by volunteers who preserve steam heritage in the Western Cape and lease the train from the Western Cape Railway Museum Trust.
