Business of Fashion has spoken highly of the collaborative Soundwalks with Louis Vuitton within the framework of an article discussing the ways in which fashion brands can learn from Nike’s move towards integrating cutting-edge technology with their classic product line. “Integrated digital technology will become what people expect,” predicts Nike President Mark Parker, and BoF goes on to describe this aspect of the Louis Vuitton Soundwalks:

“In the fashion industry, Louis Vuitton made an interesting move into digital products, back in 2008, with Louis Vuitton Soundwalk, a unique experience that activated the brand’s heritage and dedication to ‘the art of travel.’ Designed to be played on Apple’s popular iPod and launched just before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Vuitton’s Soundwalk was a perfectly synchronised audio journey through the physical streets of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, narrated by three icons of Chinese cinema.”

The article concludes with the following observation about the direction it might be wise for luxury brands of the twenty-first century to take:

“In the market for luxury fashion, the dream is most important. But today’s affluent consumers live active and digitally-enabled lives. Increasingly, there is an important opportunity for forward-thinking luxury brands to leverage integrated digital technology to help their clients experience things, not just dream them.”

Interesting thoughts on making digital technology not only useful, but creative, enjoyable, and ultimately liberating.

Soundwalk is pleased to announce the installation of our sound piece, Ulysses’ Syndrome, at the Voix Vives Mediterranean poetry festival in Sete, France. Visitors will be able to enter the ancient seaside chapel to experience Soundwalk’s 24-hour audio voyage retracing the travels of Ulysses along the coasts of the Mediterranean.

As promised, here are some photos of Ulysses’ Syndrome, Soundwalk’s audio-visual project exhibited at the Lille Europe Pavillon at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

Ulysses’ Syndrome is a sonic and visual artwork retracing the journey of Ulysses across the Mediterranean Sea, from Troy to Ithaca. In 2009, the Soundwalk collective set out on an adventure  on board a ship specially equipped with long range antennaes, recording the hertzian frequencies along the shores of the sea.

The installation is being shown until the 15th of July 2010.

Soundwalk is happy to announce the screening of its movie “Kill The Ego” at Seconde Nature Festival’s fourth Edition in Aix-en-Provence, this week-end.

Seconde Nature is a multidisciplinary Festival dedicated to the most recent creative sound, visual, art and multi-media works in the fields of electronic music, digital art, and “other cultural oddities”.

“Kill The Ego” began as a song, as an epic 40-minute-long poem composed of 10 years of sound recordings captured in New York by Soundwalk between 1998 and 2008. The fragmented memories of poets and dominatrixes, of pimps and prophets, of visionaries and lost children – the gamut of stories from the street: of the most obscure corners, of underground unrest, intimate and universal biographies of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx – Soundwalk has captured and woven together the sounds, conversations, and songs of urbanity. Initiated by Dalbin, this soundtrack of New York City has been represented visually onscreen by the artist Rostarr, who used the sound recordings as a launch for an art series documented by directors Jim Helton and Ron Patane. Inspired by the technique used in Henri-Georges Clouzot’s masterpiece “Le mystère Picasso”, the directors sought to give life to the creative process and gave birth to the aural and visual work that is the film Kill the Ego.

As one of the most famous places in Paris, the area of Saint Germain des Prés has progressively become a symbol of the city itself in the eyes of many. As a true Parisian, born and raised in the city, I certainly did not expect to discover anything new about the classic Saint Germain des Prés quartier when I started to stroll around the area of Café de Flore. It did not take long for me to realise that I was going onboard something special. As I wandered around the neighbourhood, I was accompanied by the sensual and elegant voice of French actress Virgine Ledoyen. While I walked, she offered me the chance to seize the beauty and the mystery that inhabits Saint Germain des Prés, and to capture its extraordinary intellectual heritage, which has come to represent the very essence of France’s cultural exception. Far from all the clichés that usually surround this part of Paris, this warm afternoon of June will remain in my memory as the day when I finally discovered the intriguing and passionate essence of Parisian history and lifestyle: the myth that is Saint Germain des Prés.
