After a series of loft and warehouse events we are bringing the next installment of our party to the Littlefield art space. This time the night will light up to the sounds of Toronto’s visionary Basic Soul Unit (marking his debut in New York), as well as city’s own dance-floor incendiary and frequent DFA collaborator Brennan Green, joined by the residents Lenny de la Posso, Helping Hands and J Red. Augmenting the aural experience will be the enigmatic glow of “Twenty First Century Bonfire” by Jason Eppink, along with flowing video and slide projections by Mechaneyes and Ruby Gold.

Lots more information for you after the jump:

Basic Soul Unit www.myspace.com/basicsoulunit
Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit was born in Hong Kong and raised in Toronto, where his musical tastes were formed under the influence of the nearby dance music hubs. Taking in Chicago’s jack, New York’s groove, and Detroit’s machine soul, he augmented them with the elements of jazz, funk and Brazilian rhythms which he picked up during his years at Toronto’s vinyl outlet Cosmo Records. Together these parts have formed the unique sound of Basic Soul Unit, which has since found its place on records released by such forward-thinking labels as Ostgut Ton, Philpot, Versatile, Creme Organization and Mule Musiq. Stuart’s DJ sets showcase the full range of his diverse musical tastes while keeping a firm grip on the dancefloor with heavy-hitting shuffling house, crunchy techno and an occasional broken beat curve-ball.

Brennan Green http://www.myspace.com/chinatown
Largely associated with the recent New York disco revival and his excellent studio work, it seems that Brennan Green’s favorite past-time behind the decks is drawing the unsuspecting party-goers into a pitch-perfect dance trip consisting of selections ranging from lost Krautrock relics to sweltering acid-techno workouts. After witnessing him quickly whip the crowd into the best kind of frenzy at the very first Sound Noir event we had no doubts that the man had to become a repeat offender of our dancefloors.

Lenny de la Posso www.myspace.com/themarecordings
Lenny de la Posso is the owner and manager of New York’s prime electronic music and multimedia label Thema Records. Involved with the local underground scene as a dancer since 1991, he developed a taste for DJing and amassed an expansive record collection composed of obscure gems and influential classics. Today Lenny is an in-demand selector playing records across the globe and working via his label to strengthen the the bond between New York’s techno/house scene and its overseas counterparts. As a resident of Sound Noir, he represents the late-night, driving aspect of their sound.

Helping Hands http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/helpinghands
Little is know about these two mysterious individuals from Upper Manhattan other that they can be seen either rocking an odd loft party or passed out on a couch in the corner of a club.

J Red http://soundnoir.net/
A man behind the scenes of Sound Noir, J is often the one responsible for most of the hard work that goes into their organization. What
drives him is the love of sincere music, be it funk, hip-hop or Detroit techno. On August 20th he will open the proceedings with a
rare J Dilla tribute set.

Featuring “Twenty First Century Bonfire” by Jason Eppink http://jasoneppink.com/
Twenty-First Century Bonfire is an aleatoric light sculpture created by a self-proclaimed “urban alchemist” and “rapid prototyper” Jason Eppink. The Bonfire consists of seven rescued television sets topped by a protruding matrix of PVC pipes that diffuses live television broadcasts into a shifting array of rich colors and abstract shapes. These heavily-researched and targeted messages of consumption—all provided free of charge by unwitting corporate collaborators—are filtered into abstraction simply by scattering them inside the PVC piping, rendering the process entirely transparent yet mesmerizing to the curious observer.

Live video manipulations and slide projections by:
Mechaneyes http://limitlesspulse.com/ and
Ruby Gold http://www.mariettepapic.com/welcome/ruby-gold/

Littlefield is a 6200-square foot warehouse dating from the 1920s, which was converted to performance and art space with the use of recycled materials and sustainable wind power. In addition to the two main fully air-conditioned spaces it boasts an inside smoking/drinking landscaped courtyard and a bar that serves both unique cocktails and $3 beers. http://www.littlefieldnyc.com/home/

For our party the space will be outfitted with a high-quality custom system by Niksound.

Once again we are proud of the diverse line-up that will unite on one dancefloor the artists who lead the way in their respective genres.

It’s safe to say that Terrence Dixon is one of the originators of Detroit minimal techno. Although not as universally famous as Robert Hood, Terrence released his first works on Utensil Records at the same time as Robert and helped to define the sound that has since travelled across the ocean and mutated sometimes beyond recognition, tied to its roots only by the ethos of getting maximal result by minimal means. Terrence’s compositions are as bent as they get, often with swirls of dark melodies circling the simple but powerful beat. However his DJ sets these days can be pretty far from that. Last summer Terrence played a midnight set at our impromptu rooftop party in Bushwick and surprised everyone with an upbeat house set that was perfect for a hot June night. Something tells us this time we will get to hear his darker late-night side.

You should be familiar with Fred P by now – if you haven’t caught one of his deeper-than-deep DJ sets at the Bunker or House’N'Home, the name Black Jazz Consortium may ring a bell – Fred has been producing records under this moniker for a few years now, and the excellent results include “Structure”, which was featured as one of 2009’s best albums by residentadvisor.net and littlewhiteearbuds.com; as well as recent collaboration with Reagenz (Move D & Jonah Sharp) on Workshop records. We are a bunch of Fred fan-boys (plus one girl) and are very happy to finally feature him at our event.

Runaway, a collaborative project of Marcos Cabral and Jaques Renault, has become more and more prominent on the music radar in the past few years. While one of them was influenced by styles as diverse as classical music, post-punk, drum’n'bass and disco, the other was playing Chicago house, latin freestyle and producing minimal techno for the famous Trapez imprint. After meeting in NY and informing each others musical tastes for a few years, they released their first collaboration on local Wurst Edits – right off the bat the tracks were featured in mixes by disco biggies Glimmers and Lindstrom, while ‘08 bomb “Brooklyn Club Jam” was so powerful it just had to be released on both DFA and Rekids. The past year has been extremely productive for the duo, with an international tour, releases coming out on Japan’s excellent Mule Musiq, among other labels, and the founding of their own brand new imprint On The Prowl. After hearing Marcos play a great opening set for Rick Wade at our May party, we are excited to experience the combined output of Runaway as DJs.

As always our residents Lenny de la Posso and Helping Hands will represent the signature sound of Noir, while in the opening hours Mike Minogue will be playing a set consisting of disco, jazz and funk gems.

Hello, we are back!

This time we want to give summer sunshine another chance, without letting go of our favorite dark night.

2 of the most unique US producers/DJs out there will be playing with us day and night.

For the past few years Dave Aju from San Francisco has been walking the line between weird and wonderful by the way of jazzy with his productions – which has rightfully landed him on the mischievous Parisian label Circus Company and led to the very famous Luciano remix of “Crazy Place” – a single taken from Aju’s conceptual album pieced together entirely of vocal samples. Take that acapella-haters! Fear not though his set will include much more than vocalizing:) http://www.myspace.com/daveaju

Kris Wadsworth on his part churns out some of the most distinct and powerful tracks coming from Detroit these days. At just 24 years of age he has mastered his native town’s gritty sound and infused it with a dose of subdued beauty that made them so popular with just about every deep DJ and quality labels like Swiss Morris/Audio, French Adults Only and German Poker Flat. Unlike many of the newly converted pseudo-D producers Kris forgoes all the dross and instead concentrates on extra-tough beats supplemented by melodic depth charges to make for tracks that seem to hit you in the sub-conscious. I could go on and on as Kris really made some of my favorite tracks of this and last years but let the music do the talking, hit the link. http://www.myspace.com/thedepthsof

The latest awesome addition to the line-up is Montreal resident MOSSA. Both his classical/jazz music training and his early obsession with hard-core is showing in his daring electronic compositions that have been released on such influential labels as Cynosure, Mo’s Ferry and Circus Company. First and foremost a DJ, his sets are bursting with energy and sounds that are anything but predictable. http://mossamusic.free.fr/

Our own NYC-town will be represented by Anton Esteban – resident DJ of the 5-year-strong disco/leftfield party No Ordinary Monkey. After experiencing their amazing dance-out last Sunday in WBurg’s Grand Ferry Park we are looking forward to hearing more of that magical psychodelic goodness from Anton’s crate. You’d better be prepared to traverse the outer space! http://www.noordinarymonkey.com/

Residents Lenny de la Posso of Thema ( http://www.neoday.net ) and Helping Hands will be present in high spirits to further define the Sound of Noir.

$10 on the list; $20 at the door

We would like to see you there, dancing;)
