This song might be a little difficult to understand, just by listening to it without reading the lyrics. This is because of the many reduced sounds and contractions used in it.

This is a common phenomenon in the English language, which is a rhythmic language and not a syllabic one. In syllabic languages, phrases are divided into syllables with each syllable taking an equal amount of time and is therefore clearly pronounced. In rhythmic languages like English, phrases have to fit within a certain rhythm, regardless of the number of syllables. So, this makes it necessary to reduce some sounds.

Here are some examples of common reductions that happen:
want to = wanna
going to = gonna
i’m going to = i’m gonna = imma
I’m not going to = I ain’t gonna
doing = doin’, remembering = rememberin’, etc
because= ‘cause
I’ve been feeling = been feeling

One of the things Mariah Carey is known for is her great love for Christmas. She is the author of one of the most successful Christmas albums of all times, Merry Christmas (1994), and ever since then she has often been referred to as ‘The Queen of Christmas’.

In 2010, she released a second Christmas album called Merry Christmas II You, and this is the first single from the album, Oh Santa! Let’s listen to the song.

This is another song that would appear on the higher end of the challenge spectrum. Usually, more upbeat songs are harder to understand but, in any case, this will be good practice. You will probably need to spend a little longer on it if you are more detail oriented. Otherwise, it’s worth it, especially if you like Destiny’s Child, and the song has a really good vibe.

As in most more urban songs (related to hip-hop and RnB, using a lot of street language), you will hear again a few phrases and expressions that we usually reduce in natural fast speech or use in a colloquial setting.

Have you heard We Are Family before? Is it popular in your country?
