New firmware (4.1.B.1.13) certified for 2011 Xperia Devices

Sony Mobile has new firmwares certified this month for all 2011 Xperia devices except for the Xperia Play (Sorry guys). Firmware number 4.1.B.1.13 is one of them which is likely to be a new version of Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. The other one is firmware number 4.0.2.A.0.84 which is likely to be an upgrade for Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Sony has not provided any official details about these certified firmwares but it is safe to expect bug fixes and maybe some more improvements. These firmwares maybe something to look forward to this Q1 of 2013.

So What's New with Samsung Galaxy SIII?

I have been hearing good things about the new Samsung Galaxy SIII so I made some investigations on the web to find out what causes the popularity (too bad I did not have a sponsor to test it personally – well, maybe in the near future eh?).

Here are some of the coolest features and the so-so stuff about the device.

Screen

Samsung seems to have tweaked the colour balance of their screen this time which is lovely compared to the over saturated Super AMOLED of the S2.

S3 has more visible colors specially when viewed at a close range.

S Voice

An idea between Samsung and Vlingo to bring Siri-like experience to the device. It is not in anyway close to Siri though in terms of intelligence and efficiency. A new feature fused with this new offering which definitely need more work.

Smart Stay

Another "smart" idea which allows the device to constantly track your eyeball and keep the screen lit while you are looking at it. It must be a cool experience, huh?

TechRadar's review said it works 75% in practice.

I am totally not a fan of Samsung’s aesthetics. The icons and form factor from their entry-level devices up to the S3 being their flagship; are pretty much elementary, recycling the same so-so old designs.

S3 could have been sleeker if the form factor and Samsung layering have been tweaked. Would you agree?

Facebook for Android with Improved Messenger and Camera Plug-ins

Facebook for Android has been recently updated to offer bug fixes and improved Messenger and Camera plug-in for quick sharing!

If you previously installed a separate Facebook Messenger, you no longer need it with this update. The Messenger has been built-in and works flawlessly as of this post.

Capture photos and share them to your Facebook friends using the additional Camera plug-in or select one from your Gallery. I will have to run some more tests for this plug-in though.

A great update overall. Would you agree?

PS: They added a splash screen to greet you when you launch the application.

Official ICS scoop for Xperia Arc S, Neo and Ray!

Sony has officially released their ICS upgrade for Arc S, Neo V and Ray Friday, 13 April 2012.

The first scoops will hit customers from Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Norway. This software updates for these first 3 Xperia 2011 smartphones will run 4 to 6 weeks until it becomes available globally.

As for the Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman; the upgrade is expected to be available starting from the end of May/early June (may vary from regions and carriers).

You will need to perform the upgrade using the PC Companion.

Google has unveiled Project Glass - What Technology can do for you tomorrow

We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t.

This is the tagline of what Google has unveiled on a Google plus page called Project Glass.

Project Glass features wearable glasses which show the user augmented reality display of directions, e-mail, and even video chat directly in front of the user’s eyes. This mind-blowing technology uses voice control and GPS. The glasses appear to run on an Android variant and use the same voice command icon.

Project Glass emerges from a group inside Google[x] and posted demo images and videos in a hope to hear out valuable inputs. We have not seen any details about how the glasses really work though. There is no release date provided but the device is said to be in testing stage.

Sony's ICS Upgrade for Xperia 2011 Pushed to mid-April

Sony's recent post about their ICS upgrade has disappointed number of users expecting ICS by end-March which was previously announced.

According to the post, the ICS upgrade will commence by mid-April up until end-May. So this means a longer wait for all xperia 2011 users like me.

Adding to the disappointment is another post informing users of the apparently not-so-great things to expect about ICS on their xperia 2011 series compared to the latest Gingerbread we have.

Rooting 4.0.2.A.0.62 with the Update Center Trick!

Well this is not something new but allow me to share this to those wanting to keep their Root after upgrading to Live with Walkman™'s new firmware version (4.0.2.A.0.62) without unlocking your bootloader.

Here's what you need:

An older firmware version (I recommend 4.0.2.A.0.58)
Live with Walkman™ USB Drivers
Flash Tool
Working Internet Connection (on your phone)

Lets begin:

Download 4.0.2.A.0.58 from here *
Install the latest PC Companion on your PC to make sure you have the latest USB Drivers
Download Flashtool and install it on your computer
Begin flashing the firmware by following this simple guide **
After the .58 has been successfully flashed to your phone, proceed with the Rooting process. A simple guide I wrote is here.
You should have a root now. On your phone, enable Data Connection or connect to a working WiFi.
Launch Update Center and your phone should detect 4.0.2.A.0.62
Download and Install the Update. Your phone will restart several times
Once done, validate your root access by using applications such as CacheMate

This trick works for me. Let me know your results.

I woke up early today to check updates for my Android Apps and surprised to see a notice of an upgrade to Google Play.

Sony Ericsson Split Completed, Introduces Sony Mobile Communications

After all the rumors about the split, it is now official. Sony has completed full acquisition of Sony Ericsson and renames it Sony Mobile Communications!

This marks the completion of the transaction jointly announced by Sony and Ericsson on October 27, 2011, and makes Sony Ericsson a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony.
Sony will rename Sony Ericsson "Sony Mobile Communications", and further integrate the mobile phone business as a vital element of its electronics business, with the aim of accelerating convergence between Sony's lineup of network enabled consumer electronics products, including smart phones, tablets, TVs and PCs.

New Firmware (4.0.2.A.0.62) for Live with Walkman

A firmware update has been deployed for the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman last night (at least for the Philippines).

The new firmware is 4.0.2.A.0.62. I updated mine last night and did not notice much change from 4.0.2.A.0.58. Looks like this update is merely for bug fixes and memory management improvements. I also read from xda that this has the new drivers for the Adreno 205 GPU.

Caution: This firmware cannot be Rooted if you are on a lock bootloader as of the moment. Feel free to come back for the latest news about rooting this firmware version.

Rooting your Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ the Easy way

With the written approval from DooMLoRD of xda-developers, I would like to share with you an easy way to root your Xperia Live with Walkman™ leaving your Bootloader unharmed!

Why do you want to Root your Android device?

This article highlighted some of the advantages of having a rooted device.

What you need:

*DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit (v3, with newest zergRush binary (16 Nov 2011) and newer superuser files)

*Your Phone drivers (better if you have installed PC Companion on your computer before you begin)

Let's begin!

The script below pretty much says what you will get after using the toolkit and what you need to do before you begin. Good luck!

[*] This script will:
(1) root ur device using latest zergRush exploit (16 Nov)
(2) install Busybox (1.18.4)
(3) install SU files (binary: 3.0.3 and apk: 3.0.6)
[*] Before u begin:
(1) make sure u have installed adb drivers for ur device
(2) enable "USB DEBUGGING"
from (Menu\Settings\Applications\Development)
(3) enable "UNKNOWN SOURCES"
from (Menu\Settings\Applications)
(4) [OPTIONAL] increase screen timeout to 10 minutes
(5) connect USB cable to PHONE and then connect to PC

Extract the file you downloaded from the original post using winzip/winrar/7zip in your computer
Go to the folder where you extracted the file and execute "RUNME.bat"
Read and follow the instructions on the screen!

I can confirm this works for Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ (WT19i)!
