Now women can wear designer dresses for a fraction of the prices they sell for in stores.
The mail-order service Rent the Runway rents out garb from high-end brands like Diane Von Furstenberg, Herve Leger and Proenza Schouler, according to a report in the New York Times
A four-night rental will set women back between $50 to $200, or about a tenth of what they'd pay for the item in a store. The dresses are ordered online, and then delivered straight to the customer's door.
Like with the video rental service Netflix, once patrons are done with the dress, they can just slip it back into a prepaid envelope and pop it into a mailbox. Dry cleaning is included in the price, but damage insurance costs $5, and in the case of outright destruction of the dress, the renter is responsible for the full retail price.
Rent the Runway was founded by two recent Harvard Business School graduates, Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Carter Fleiss. Ms. Hyman said she got the idea for the service last year after watching her younger sister agonize over whether to buy an expensive new outfit to wear to a wedding.
The real test of the service will be the quality of its collection, said Samantha Durbin, editor of FabSugar, also a fashion blog. “The key is to have really great products that are on trend,” she said. “No one wants to rent last season’s dress.”

Calvin Klein is at it again! The new ad shows a sweaty Eva Mendes in lingerie tugging at a male model's briefs. The billboard -is- located at Houston and Lafayette streets.
Calvin Klein has a long history of suggestive advertising campaigns.
Spring/Summer 2009 ad campaign, features two young men and a young woman entangled half-clothed as a third man lays at their feet undressing many asked for the billboard to be taken down and the ad banned. Many months later with complaints from neighbors the billboard came down.
A 15-year-old Brooke Shields commercial "You wanna know what comes between me and my Clavin's? Nothing." In 1980 this was pushing the envelope.

First off let me just say that "I love my Spanx". I much rather be held in tight and look sleek then to let it all hang out and be loose and flabby.
Sales of "shapewear"—undergarments for women who want a flawless, bulge-free silhouette while wearing tight clothes—have taken off since 2000. That's when Oprah Winfrey declared a brand called Spanx, with its bright packaging and product names like Bod-a-Bing! and Hide & Sleek, one of her "favorite things." The size of the market has tripled over that time, to $750 million in annual sales through the end of 2008, according to market-research firm NPD Group.
Shapewear manufacturers are responding to consumers' concerns by trying to boost the aesthetic appeal of their utilitarian undergarments. This year, Spanx introduced an upscale collection called Haute Contour, with items like a lace thong with waist reinforcements that comes in colors like pink. Other shapewear manufacturers are also adding colors and even prints to their lines. Other companies are developing apparel with built-in body shapewear. A brand called Not Your Daughter’s Jeans features a patented "Lift & Tuck" technology that the company says will make wearers drop a size, and is also introducing shaper tops in V- and cowl-neck styles in bright colors that are intended to be worn as a regular shirt. Yummie Tummie (tagline: "Show it off") has become known for its shapewear-camisole hybrids, which can be worn alone or peeking out from a blazer.

Selena Gomez to launch new line.

The 17-year-old star, best known for her leading role on The Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place,” is getting into some new territory with the fall 2010 launch of her first fashion brand, called Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez. “It’s really always been a dream of mine to have a line.”
To start, the company plans to launch a full sportswear collection for fall 2010 selling — Boho dresses, floral printed tops, jeans, skirts, jackets and some accessories such as scarves and hats. Most of the collection is made in an organic soft cotton and all fabrics are recycled or eco-friendly in some way, which was important to Gomez. All items within the collection are made to be mixed and matched, even with the ability to mix prints.
“With my line, I really want to give the customer options on how they can put their own looks together,” she said. “I want the pieces that can be easy to dress up or down, and the fabrics being eco-friendly and organic are super important. Also, the tags will all have some of my inspirational quotes on them. I’m just looking to send a good message.”

DailyCandy, the nearly 10 year old fashion and shopping newsletter and site is launching a private sample sale e-commerce site called Swirl, Sample Sales by DailyCandy much in the same vein as Gilt Groupe and Rue La La., offering limited time sales of merchandise at up to 80% off. The site will be available to DailyCandy subscribers only in Beta form beginning on the week of November 16th before its official début in January 2010.
The new site will host three sales a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Each sale will last 72 hours, and include both established and up-and-coming names in apparel and accessories like Leifsdottir, Leigh + Luca and Lauren Merkin.

Juicy Couture is headed to the airport

Juicy Couture is headed to the airport. and plans to target customers when they travel, opening four stores at airports worldwide beginning in December. The first will launch in Miami International Airport’s American Airlines terminal, followed by the British Airways terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport in January. In February, a Juicy store will open in the Taiwan TaoYuan International Airport’s Terminal II through Juicy’s Asian distribution partner, Lane Crawford.
The fourth shop, which is planned for a spring launch, will be in the Athens Airport Duty Free area. Juicy Couture collections, including apparel, accessories, footwear, children’s wear, intimates and jewelry in Greece, Romania and Bulgaria through freestanding stores and select specialty retailers
We know that our customer is traveling and she’s in the airports,” said Ellen Rodriguez, senior vice president of global licensing and international at Juicy Couture. “Women are always wearing our tracksuits, especially to travel in. We just don’t think she’s being targeted by other retailers in these airports, so there’s a real opportunity there for us.”
Tracksuits will be available in a multitude of colors, and there will also be easy last-minute gifting items such as jewelry, sunglasses, watches, charms, logo T-shirts, packaged baby socks, onesies and bibs. In addition, city-specific gifts will be available in the shops, such as a T-shirt graphic stating “Choose Miami” in the Miami airport location.
“People have a lot of time to kill in airports,” Nash-Taylor said. “This is the perfect fit for Juicy and something I’ve wanted to see happen for a long time. It’s what Juicy should be. Whether a traveler wants to buy something to wear on the plane or bring a present home, this is a very big business opportunity for us.”

QVC headquarters, is the latest destination of Isaac Mizrahi, the shopping network’s newest and most high-profile fashion recruit. The designer’s “Isaac Mizrahi Live,” slated to make its debut Dec. 4, will feature a wealth of his own favorite goodies, the first installment with a holiday slant. Tonight at his company headquarters, Mizrahi will host a press preview of the far-flung lineup, everything from handbags and berets to toggle coats and sequin Ts to cheesecake, in a launch price range of about $32 to $300. “If you feel passionate about something,” Mizrahi says, “they say, ‘Do it.’
Or bake. Regarding that cheesecake, dressed in tartan no less, it hails from Junior’s and will feature a Mizrahi-mandated chocolate cookie crust, while keeping company with Mizrahi-selected chocolate chip cookies and banana nut loaf.

“I have been building and building and building over the past 10 years. I have been doing a TV show with a lot of cooking segments, working with Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali. It has made me quite good at tasting food. I’ve been a judge on ‘Iron Chef.’”
“I love my product,” Mizrahi continues. “I believe in my product. If I do plates, if I do bedding, which I did, if I render cookies, I do it in the same way that I think about a couture dress. [My approach] bespeaks someone who cares deeply about it, on whatever level.
Now, Mizrahi can’t wait to hit the studio — or studios, as some segments will air from his own headquarters, and some from QVC’s — and take his mass message directly to consumers.

Fashion’s Night Out, the global shopping event that gave retail a much-needed kick last month, is due for an encore in 2010.
Today, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Vogue magazine, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and NYC & Co. will unveil the return of the event on Sept. 9 — and the plan is to make the second one bigger and better than the first.
“The numbers are in, and it’s clear that Fashion’s Night Out was a tremendous success,” Bloomberg said. “Thousands of New Yorkers attended the events in all five boroughs, supporting the city’s retail and fashion industries, and helping a worthwhile cause. It’s sure to be an even bigger event in 2010.”
The first event, which took place Sept. 10, was widely considered a success. In New York alone, more than 700 retailers remained open until 11 p.m., and designers planned special personal appearances or events, with various spots around the city turning into major block parties.
“We were absolutely bowled over by the response to Fashion’s Night Out,” said Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. “It was only 15 minutes after the event began, and we were getting reports about lines around the block at stores throughout the city. It was wonderful to see people embrace this initiative, and we are thrilled that they wish it to return.

THE $300 pair of designer jeans is now, courtesy of the recession, the $200 pair of designer jeans.
“It was all just a fad,” said Jeff Rudes, a founder of the hot-denim-label-du-jour J Brand Jeans and an astute observer of the suspiciously inflated prices of fashion’s most eternally reinvented staple. Like any commodity that becomes overpriced, there eventually comes a market correction. And denim’s day of reckoning was long overdue.
“The floors at most of the major stores were so overassorted that they almost looked like Loehmann’s,” Mr. Rudes said. “They were just cramming jeans onto the racks.”
The introduction of $300 jeans — perhaps even more than $1,000 coin purses and $500 plastic sunglasses — marked the moment when customers really began to question the prices they were seeing in department stores. Cotton dungarees for the price of an iPod was a stretch so extreme that retailers had to come up with a whole new term to suggest that the new jeans were different from the $100 jeans they used to sell in the 1990s.

Steven Madden debuts women's fashion

Steven Madden Ltd. is venturing further into the women's realm. The footwear and accessories retailer is designing a women's fashion apparel line. “I'm very excited about creating trend-right ready-to-wear for the Steve Madden customer,” said Mr. Madden, who founded the brand 19 years ago and operates as chief creative officer for the company.
The line, described as having a bohemian flare, will hit better department stores in spring 2010, and will include trendy items such as pixie dresses, boyfriend jacket affixed with exposed zippers and hardware details.

Mr. Madden designed a short-lived dress collection three years ago, but this will be the first time the company takes on a licensing partner, L'Koral Industries.
Analysts say Steve Madden has been able to prosper because its consumers shop at all stores—from value-priced discounters, such as Target, to upscale department stores like Bergdorf Goodman, which sells Steve Madden's high-end shoes.

TJMaxx Grand Opening-NYC News

T.J. Maxx has over 800 stores nationwide and every one gets weekly shipments of designer and top-brand fashion, at up to 60% off dept store prices.
The discounter is opening a second NYC store with an expanded accessories section (handbags, jewelry) and the usual 60 percent off labels like Marc Jacobs and BCBG (212-222-0543). 808 Columbus Ave New York Grand opening Thursday Oct. 29th 8am.
The retailer plans to add about 90 stores this year, that increases TJMaxx's purchasing power, just as department stores are consolidating and manufacturers look to alternative outlets for their goods.
Hopefully there will be an opening of a TJMaxx near you.

It’s not a season for understatement: Here’s another example of going to desirable extremes: chunky knits.
Texture plays a big part in winter clothing in 2009/2010, with the chunkiest of chunky knits keeping us both warm and fabulous. Chunky doesn't have to equal dowdy though - open-weave details are a must-have showing a peep of skin.
The best way to wear chunky knits is to acknowledge their bulk and pair them with more form fitting clothing. If you have a chunky knit sweater, for example, pair it with skinny pants, tights.
Even though you’re petite, you can make chunky knits work. Darker colors tend to work better, and keep the cable-knits to a minimum.
The easiest way to adopt this trend could simply be add a knitted accessory.

Mary-Kate and Ashley's the Olsen’s twins (in case anybody didn’t know them only by their first names) have a new design venture. Apparently a juniors' line filled with affordable basics for a younger market for JCPenney....and it's called Olsenboye.
Their website Olsenboye doesn't appear to be up yet. But if the line is in previews now, it must be slated for a spring launch. Not much is known about the line, but I can’t wait to find out more!

Kim Kardashian announced online that she and her sisters are collaborating with Bebe to put out a clothing line in the spring of 2010.
