On Saturday, May 5th, they will put their autonomous robots to the test as they participate in the Arizona Regional Botball Tournament. It should be an exhilarating event.

We would be honored if you would support these students by participating as a Botball Judge at the Tournament on Saturday, May 5th at The University of Arizona: Bear Down Gym, 1428 E. University Blvd., Tucson, Arizona.

Judges arrive at 8:45 am and participate in a number of ways. It’s a lot of fun, and most judges stay until around 4:00 pm. We’ll be sending out more information about judging as the event nears.

Botball is new to Arizona and teaches real-life programming and software development as well as valuable teamwork skills, project documentation, and working to a schedule…skills our young people will need and use one day as part of our nation’s workforce and as our future leaders.

If you are interested in participating as a judge please email me at leon@arizona.edu so I can add you to our list. I look forward to hearing whether you will be able to be a judge. There is a guest parking lot in a parking structure much nearer the location of our events. It is indicated as the Apache Blvd parking structure on the map and there is no charge for visitors to park in that structure over the weekend.

Note that Pat’s Run will occur in, and around, Sun Devil Stadium and parking lot #59 will definitely be a place to avoid. I urge all to come from the south via Mill Avenue, or from the west via University Drive and then turn south at Mill Avenue to access either the bus parking or the Apache Blvd parking structure.

For a whole year in DC, staff will rely on engineers deemed Fellows for advise into topics such as aerospace, critical infrastructure, risk analysis, energy, manufacturing, and engineering education.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Southern Arizona Chapter, is looking for educators to submit applications to host a “Noche De Ciencias” program at their school.  Educators are responsible for planning the event date/time with their school, parents and students in October 2011.  SHPE Southern Arizona will provide the workshop, food and volunteers to execute the event.

Hello Everyone! We hope all of you are doing great. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Southern Arizona Professional Chapter (SHPE-SoAz) would like to invite you to the second member meeting, “Summer Breeze Mixer”. Join us for an evening of networking with professionals from all over Tucson, a chance to win some door prizes, and lots of fun! We will continue to have raffle tickets available for an opportunity to win an Apple iPad 2. Also join us after the meeting for some Salsa Dancing at El Parador starting at 9:30pm. Here are a few ways that you can help.  Remember – we need YOUR help at one or more of these activities to make them successful.  If you would like to have your work group “sponsor” one of the volunteer events at BGC and volunteer as a group, please let me know.  This can be a great team building activity.

1)  We will have two teen evenings at the Holmes Tuttle Boys & Girls Club, 2585 E. 36th St.  They will both be similar in format, with different topics – we don’t know how many teens to expect, but probably 15-20.  The format will be:
5:00 – 6:00 pm – interactive educational topic
6:00 – 6:30 pm – dinner
6:30 – 8:00 pm – activities & games in the gym
Tuesday 12 July – topic – career possibilities.  I hope to get a career survey for the teens to take, that will help them figure out what careers might fit well with their interests.  If anybody has a paper career survey to recommend (on-line won’t work), please let me know.  The adults will help the teens complete the survey, then will discuss the results with them.  If there’s time, the club computers can be used to research more about the careers – or the adult volunteers can discuss with the teens what type of education may be required for that career.

This isn’t as scary as it might sound – we did something similar to this about 4 summers ago, and it was very successful both for the teens and for the adults.  We hope to get a BGC staff member to help lead activities in the gym – so you can get in your exercise for the day or learn to dance, depending on what they pick.

2)  The 6th annual MISS Adventures camp will be held the week of 18-22 July, with a reception on Sunday 17 July from 3:00-5:00 pm.  The camp is for 30 middle school girls (no, I’m sorry but we can’t take your child – the girls are already selected) and will be held at the University of Arizona on Monday – Wednesday (7/18-7/20) and Friday (7/22), with a visit to Raytheon on Thursday 7/21.  Volunteers are needed from 8:30-12:30 or 12:30-4:30 Monday and Tuesday, from 8:30-11:30 and 1:00-4:30 on Wednesday, and from 12:30-5:30 or 5:30-8:00 on Friday.  On Thursday volunteers are needed from 8:30-12:00 (and are welcome to stay for lunch) in Bldg 801.  We also need one more volunteer from 1:00-5:00 to help escort the tour groups.  In addition we need a Spanish translator from 6:30-8:00 pm on Friday 7/22.

If you are interested in helping, I will send you the camp plan so you have an idea of the agenda and can pick which topics you’d like to help with.  All volunteers are welcome, but women volunteers are especially appreciated.

These are our summer activities that are currently planned.  We plan to start with our first Math Night at Sunnyside High School in late August, and the remainder of our volunteer activities will resume in early September.
