Porcelain veneers are a terrific solution to address a wide range of the cosmetic dentistry problems that many patients face. “Veneers are a great option to make your teeth look whiter, straighter, more even, and more attractive,” notes Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Miami cosmetic dentist at Smile South Florida. However, not every dental patient is a candidate for porcelain veneers. Below are some of the criteria that cosmetic dentists look for in a porcelain veneer patient.

Multiple Issues: Discolored teeth can be whitened, but you can bleach your teeth and make them look straighter with one straightforward procedure. Also, due to tetracycline staining, or issues where the tooth has lost color because it’s dead, or other reasons, some patients cannot whiten their teeth with bleach and veneers are there only option. Although braces are necessary to fix very crooked teeth, veneers can help with mild crookedness or misalignment. Instant orthodontics procedures can change the shape of the patient’s smile by using porcelain veneers. They can also be used to fix gaps between teeth (diastemas), chipped teeth, and misshapen or unevenly sized teeth. So if you have multiple problems with your teeth, veneers can give you the smile you want.

Healthy Teeth: If you have serious decay issues, gingivitis, cracked teeth, or gum disease, you are not a good candidate for veneers. Dentists cannot place veneers on unhealthy teeth. However, if you treat and correct any serious dental issues, veneers are then an option for you.

No Clenching or Grinding: Patients who severely clench or grind their teeth are not good candidates for veneers. Veneers are not as strong as natural teeth, so they can be chipped or broken more easily by the kind of pressure exerted by bruxism. Some patients who only grind at night may be able to have veneers if they’re diligent about using a night guard which protects the teeth.

Good Tooth Enamel: Porcelain veneers adhere to the enamel on the surface of your tooth. If the enamel on your teeth is mostly gone – or if you have lost a significant amount of the tooth structure – veneers have nothing to bond with and are probably not the best option for you.

Tooth Alignment: Severely misaligned teeth can cause problems for your veneers because the positioning of your jaw when you bite will put excessive pressure on the veneers, causing them to crack or chip. This is particularly true for patients whose lower jaw extends out past their upper jaw. Misalignments can be corrected by braces, but this is a time-consuming process.

A Desire for a Beautiful Smile: Veneers don’t involve multiple dentist visits or procedures which take place over months. They also let you avoid braces while whitening your teeth at the same time. “Veneers are probably the fastest and easiest way to create your ideal smile,” observes Nottingham, a Boca Raton cosmetic dentist. “So if you are unhappy with a couple different aspects of your smile, veneers might be the way to get that smile makeover you’ve always craved!”

However, the phrase “buyers beware” definitely applies here. Dental tourism patients can be putting their health at risk without the safety net provided by the U.S. dental system.

Education: You get what you pay for. If you undergo a dental procedure in the U.S., you know you are receiving services from a practitioner who has studied at an accredited program and has been tested and certified on his/her knowledge of dentistry. However, in Mexico, for instance, you can start doing dental implants (a complicated procedure which varies from person to person) after taking a single course. Likewise, you don’t know what kind of education the dentist’s staff has received and if they are trained in proper procedures.

Oversight: In the U.S., dentists are subject to oversight by state dental boards which certify that dentists will meet a certain set of standards. American dentists need to follow proper procedures for infection control, x-ray safety, and waste disposal. Most dentists need to take continuing education classes to ensure that they remain current in the latest research and techniques. In addition, the equipment they use is subject to oversight by the FDA, which monitors its safety and effectiveness. With a foreign country, you don’t know how stringent their standards are for certification of dentists and technology – and you can’t tell how carefully they enforce the standards that are in place.

Medical Complications: If you select a dentist who doesn’t follow rigorous safety procedures, you could be increasing your chance of infection, particularly in a country where you can’t drink the water. Patients with asthma, heart and kidney conditions, or organ transplants need to be particularly careful. “Some dental procedures can increase the risk of contracting an infection,” notes Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Fort Lauderdale cosmetic dentist with Smile South Florida Cosmetic Dentistry. “That’s not a good combination with the kind of unsanitary conditions you might encounter in another country. In the U.S. many patients are given antibiotics following some procedures to minimize the risk of infection, but foreign dentists may not be that careful. Traveling also puts stress on the body,” points out Nottingham.

Legal Recourse: So what do you do if a filling falls out or a veneer comes unglued? You can return to the out-of-country dentist to repair the problem, but that will require another trip – and eat into the money you saved by leaving the U.S. If the problem is more serious, you have little legal recourse in many countries. The reason so many foreign dentists are cheap is that they have no worries about being sued for malpractice. Yes, they save money on malpractice insurance, but you also take the risk that you’ll spend the money and then be unhappy with the results.

Lauderdale dentist. Studies have shown that improving the appearance of your teeth can also make you appear younger, smarter, and wealthier to other people.

“These results coincide with what I’ve observed in my practice,” notes Dr. Nottingham, a Miami cosmetic dentist. “People who are self-conscious about their teeth smile less and have lower self-esteem. When you’re happier about how you look, you smile more and you’re more attractive to others – which encourages them to see you as more intelligent and sensitive. A whole host of positive changes can come from that one simple change.”

In a study conducted by Beall Research & Training of Chicago on behalf of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), researchers found that an improved smile will make cosmetic dentistry patients seem more successful, interesting, and intelligent – in addition to being more attractive. Researchers showed photos of eight people before and after cosmetic dentistry to 528 survey respondents, who represented a cross section of the American population.

Upon viewing the pictures, respondents were asked to quickly judge the patients in the photos based on whether they were more attractive, more intelligent, happier, more successful in their career, friendlier, more interesting, wealthier, kinder, more popular with the opposite sex, and more sensitive. The “after” pictures of the individuals with cosmetic dentistry scored higher in every category, with particularly big jumps in the scores for attractiveness and wealth.

“Numerous studies have linked attractiveness and professional success, so it’s not surprising that great smiles would be linked to an image of wealth or success,” observes Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentist. “In addition they have found that more attractive people get promoted and go further in their careers. Improving your smile is an easy way to enhance your appearance and look more youthful – and maybe enhance your employment potential as well.”

No wonder so many people are concerned about their face’s appearance, particularly as they age. But what do you do about it? Many people’s first thought is to get a face lift, but plastic surgery isn’t necessarily the best option. Many of the benefits of a face lift can be created through cosmetic dentistry.

The Aging Process

As people are living longer they are looking for techniques to stay young looking. As you age the lower third of the face gradually shrinks. Cosmetic dentistry can revitalize this area, making you look as much as ten years younger. Over the years many people grind down or lose their back teeth, causing a caved-in look in the face. A “face lift” smile makeover lengthens your back teeth to give a younger, fuller look to your face, including your lips and cheeks.

On the other hand, your problems might just be with the lips. Replacing any missing front teeth or adding porcelain veneers to the existing teeth can help make your lips look fuller and younger.

Another effect of the aging process is that your teeth grow darker and more translucent. The appearance of the teeth can even make you look older than you actually are! Tooth whitening procedures are a quick and inexpensive way to rejuvenate your teeth and improve their appearance. Your teeth can get up to seven shades whiter – often in only one or two office visits.

If you are unhappy with the shape of your chin or jaw, oral maxillofacial surgery may be the best option. Such procedures can improve the appearance of thin lips or a disproportionately sized jaw. This is an option to consider particularly if you are experiencing some functional difficulties with your teeth. Some or all of the procedure may be covered by health/dental insurance or may be tax deductible.

“If you have specific concerns about your face, be sure to consult a cosmetic dentist,” says Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Fort Lauderdale dentist. “Many people don’t realize how many conditions can be fixed with cosmetic dentistry. For instance, if your upper lip has started to sag because of age, veneers can elongate your teeth so the sagging lip doesn’t hide your smile.”

The Process

When debating the merits of plastic surgery versus cosmetic dentistry you should think about the time and energy surgery requires. You will need to visit with the surgeon, set up a time in the hospital, undergo the surgical procedure – and then have weeks of recovery time. On the other hand, most cosmetic dentistry procedures can be done in the dentist’s office, without the risks and difficulties of general anesthesia. The procedures tend to be fast and recovery time is usually a matter of days, if at all.

“For most patients cosmetic dentistry is easier and quicker than any surgical procedure,” observes Ft. Lauderdale dentist Dr. Charles Nottingham. “Patients are often pleasantly surprised at how quick many procedures are. And they can be up and about immediately – enjoying their new smiles!”

Working Together

Of course, it is often the case that the teeth and soft tissues of the face must work together. After all, a good strong line of teeth will provide needed support for the facial muscles – whether or not you also get plastic surgery. If a patient wants extensive changes to his or her appearance, the best approach might be to have cosmetic dentistry and plastic surgery procedures that complement each other. For example, a patient might have tooth whitening and other procedures to look younger, but then might want to have plastic surgery around the eyes to correct drooping lids or wrinkles. Or a dental smile makeover might be necessary to ensure that the mouth area remains youthful looking for years to come after a plastic surgical procedure.

What is less well known is that many of them also benefit from cosmetic dentistry. A mouth full of straight, white teeth is something people notice about you and an essential part of looking attractive and healthy. It’s no wonder that celebrities feel that an attractive smile is a necessity. Celebrities make use of a variety of procedures. Below are some of the most popular.

Complete Makeover: It’s hard to believe that some gorgeous celebrities once had terrible teeth, but photos don’t lie. One of the best examples is Tom Cruise. He had terribly misaligned teeth that were completely overhauled through a combination of straightening and veneers. Victoria Beckham grew up ashamed of her teeth and afraid to smile because of crooked teeth and a prominent gap. She reportedly spent more than $40,000 on tooth straightening as well as veneers and whitening. Ben Affleck worked on his smile over a couple of years to correct small, unevenly spaced, off-color teeth. His makeover included crowns, veneers, and whitening treatments.

Veneers: “Porcelain veneers are a versatile solution to a variety of cosmetic dental concerns. They can add length to teeth, conceal gaps, fix chips, make crooked teeth look straighter, and hide permanent stains,” notes Miami cosmetic dentist Dr. Charles Nottingham from Smile South Florida Cosmetic Dentistry. Veneers are very popular with celebrities. Catherine Zeta Jones used veneers to correct gaps and reshape pointy incisors. Singer Hillary Duff chipped a tooth on a microphone during a concert and received a row of veneers to correct the problem. Actor Timothy Olyphant used veneers to make his teeth look longer and to show less gum. Demi Moore reportedly used veneers to change the shape of her teeth and whitening treatments to brighten her smile.

Surgery/Tooth Lengthening: For many celebs the problem is that their teeth are too small to be aesthetically pleasing or to be in proportion with the rest of their face. George Clooney is believed to have had crown lengthening surgery, which uses lasers to move up the gumline and expose more of the tooth, making them appear longer. Likewise Kate Bekinsale likely had deep cleaning and gum re-contouring in addition to tooth whitening procedures. A star at a young age, Miley Cyrus initially suffered from a gummy smile, crooked teeth, and prominent front teeth. Once she became well known for her work on Hannah Montana at the tender age of 16, she invested in cosmetic dentistry. She may have used tooth lengthening procedures or veneers (or both) to elongate her teeth and make them more uniform in size while correcting her snaggletooth look.

Straightening: “Sometimes veneers can create straighter looking teeth, but with some patients they need a different kind of straightening method,” says Nottingham, a Fort Lauderdale cosmetic dentist. Movie star Zac Efron used invisible braces like Invisalign to correct gaps in his teeth. In the interest of making her teeth look more uniform, Oprah Winfrey also opted for invisible braces, which are very popular with people who are often in the public eye. In between movies in 2003, Nicholas Cage sported traditional metal braces on his lower teeth. Gwen Stefani even managed to make braces into something of a fashion statement.

Whitening: “Teeth bleaching or whitening is one of the least expensive and most common cosmetic dentistry procedures,” observes Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentist. “It’s a good bet that most celebrities have had their teeth whitened at some point.” With the capacity to make your teeth up to nine shades lighter, tooth whitening is a great option for people whose teeth are straight and attractive, but discolored – whether from aging or from cigarette smoking or drinking coffee and soft drinks. Sharon Stone, Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise, and Nicholas Cage are only some of the stars who are known to have had teeth whitening done.

Lauderdale cosmetic dentist reach and educate patients. Fort Lauderdale — With social media is all the rage, one of the newest and fastest growing social media sites is Pinterest.

Now the Ft. Lauderdale cosmetic dentists at Smile South Florida Cosmetic Dentistry have started a Pinterest page which describes their practice, gives information about cosmetic dentistry, and introduces site visitors to attractions and restaurants in South Florida. Pinterest was founded in 2009 by Ben Silberman; by December 2011, the site became one of the top 10 largest social network services with 11 million total visits per week. Also in 2011, Time Magazine named Pinterest in its “50 Best Websites of 2011″ article. By January 2012, the site had 11.7 million unique users, making it the fastest site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark.

In March 2012, Pinterest became the third largest social network in the United States, behind Facebook and Twitter. The media sharing website permits users to create thematic collections of images, videos, and documents about events, interests, hobbies, businesses, and more. Users browse through other users’ pinboards for inspiration, re-pin images to their own pinboards, or “like” photos on other boards. They can save and categorize images as well as follow other users’ boards if they have similar interests. Recently Smile South Florida created a Pinterest page which includes bulletin boards featuring photos and videos on many different topics. Below are some of the topics the Miami cosmetic dentists’ Pinterest page covers:

About Smile South Florida

Patient before-and-after pictures with descriptions of the dental procedures

Inspirational sayings

Boards dedicated to South Florida style, destinations, malls, spas, shops, and restaurants

Beautiful celebrity smiles

Articles about reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry

FAQs about cosmetic dentistry – including links to RealSelf.com

Soon Smile South Florida will even have Pinterest integrated right into their website so visitors can share their favorite smile makeovers, pin their desired treatment procedures, and refer friends and family more easily than before. The pinterest board is particularly helpful to cosmetic patients who are traveling in from out of the state or country and are looking to see what fun activities, restaurants, and hot spots are in the area. “Pinterest helps us paint a great picture (literally) of what Miami/South Florida is all about.

It also gives people a great idea of what and who we are as a dental office, by showing inspirational quotes. Actually, we call them Pinspirations!,” said Dr. Charles Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentist with Smile South Florida. “Pinterest makes it easy to connect with other top cosmetic dentists and dental professionals all over the U.S. and the world so we can stay on the pulse of the industry.”

Ft. Lauderdale – Only the top 2 percent of the nation’s dentists qualify to be certified cosmetic dentists for daVinci laboratories and to offer daVinci products. These dentists are carefully screened and trained to daVinci’s high standards, representing excellence in cosmetic dentistry. DaVinci is a premier provider of dental veneers, implants, and crowns, and was the first company to introduce cosmetic porcelain veneers to the West Coast. ABC’s Extreme Makeover show and Fox’s The Swan use daVinci as their dental lab.

The Miami cosmetic dentists at Smile South Florida are part of this elite group of daVinci dentists. In fact, Smile South Florida appreciates daVinci’s great customer service and high quality products so much that it is the only brand they use.

”No other dental lab offers the quality of products that DaVinci offers,” says Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Miami cosmetic dentist at Smile South. “We don’t need to offer any other kinds of veneers, implants, and crowns. DaVinci has everything our patients need, and they are very easy to work with.”

DaVinci Veneers are ultra-thin ceramic shells that are bonded to the front of a patient’s teeth. This procedure can be the ideal choice for patients who want to improve their smiles and mask discolorations, close spaces, and brighten tooth color. Resistant to staining from coffee, tea or cigarettes, the daVinci veneer bonds to the tooth, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing, natural look that is unsurpassed by other restorative options.

Dr. Charles Nottingham, a top South Florida cosmetic dentist, has worked closely with Daniel Materdomini, da Vinci’s former owner who sold the business recently. They often collaborated on methods of using da Vinci veneers to maintain the best dental practices. They also worked together on the Ultimate Makeover project which provides pro bono cosmetic work to people selected from the local community. The recent candidate needed extreme dental work, which was provided by Dr. Nottingham while da Vinci provided all the lab materials for free. The Ultimate Makeover project was featured on CBS, Plum TV, and more.

Da Vinci labs uses Dr. Nottingham’s very own smile book of before and after pictures to demonstrate what superior cosmetic dental work should look like to da Vinci dentists around the country. Mr. Materdomini even asked Dr. Nottingham to do a full cosmetic reconstruction on his mother– and was very pleased with the end results. In a letter to Smile South Florida, Materdomini wrote: “…your preparations and impressions exceed perfection [for our Mother]… If the Extreme Makeover show was filmed in Florida, I am sure you would be the providing dentist.”

best deal. But when it comes to finding a lower price for cosmetic dentistry, are the really getting the better end of the bargain?

In the field of cosmetic dentistry, for example, prospective patients are searching for “low cost veneers” or “cheap veneers” or other similar searches. What might turn up in their search are basically the lowest tier doctors that need to offer too-good-to-be-true specials for veneers or Groupon mass-appeal specials in order to lure in patients to their dwindling practice.

“People are not always looking for quality these days or at least they do not understand the importance of getting quality treatment with respect to dentistry until it’s too late,” says top cosmetic dentist Dr. Charles Nottingham of Smile South Florida Cosmetic Dentistry.

Patients know that they want veneers and will do whatever it takes to get them as cheap as possible from offices that offer that. What patients don’t foresee is the hidden costs behind getting cheap veneers.

Many of these offices that offer a Groupon or ridiculously low rate of something like $2999 for 8 veneers. This breaks down to $374 per tooth (which gets split by 50/50 with the marketing company). Thus, the dental office really only makes $187 per tooth which includes the cost of the porcelain veneer as well as the doctors time.

No quality lab in the US offers good or even adequate products for $187 per tooth. I guess the old line applies here, You get what you pay for.

Lauderdale cosmetic dentist Dr. Charles Nottingham is rated number one among the 86 dentists Dr. Oogle ranks in the Boca Raton area. With 43 reviews, Dr. Nottingham’s Smile South Florida practice received a perfect score of five stars.

Dr. Oogle, which calls itself the Good Dentist Guide, contains more than 151, 448 patient reviews of dentists all over the U.S. Each dentist is rated on a scale of one to five stars in five different categories: facilities, service, painlessness, cost, and results. Patients can also leave comments that describe what services they received and what their experience was like. Some describe the procedure and specify the cost – information that can be valuable for potential patients – and some also evaluate the experience they have with dental hygienist.

The ratings are based on voluntary opinions from patients. The more positive reviews a dentist has, the higher their ranking will be – so the system favors those practitioners with multiple ratings. The staff at Dr. Oogle actively monitors the reviews and enforces its policies to prevent manipulation by the dentists or their competitors. If a review seems “too good to be true” or “too bad to be true,” the staff may contact the poster for additional details. Postings from friends and family of the dentists are considered spam and are removed. Dentists are not allowed to post testimonials or to insert opinions about other dentists; dentists found giving other dentists negative reviews will be suspended from the website. Each patient is allowed to post only one time about a particular dentist.

“I am very grateful to my patients for giving me such glowing reviews,” said Miami cosmetic dentist Dr. Nottingham. “It’s very satisfying to know what they are pleased with the work I do and that my services are appreciated.”

One patient who’s been visiting Ft. Lauderdale cosmetic dentist Dr. Nottingham for two years, writes on Dr. Oogle: “Nottingham is excellent, I’ve already recommended him to friends and he’s doing work on their teeth…Doris, the dental assistant is always very cheerful, friendly and professional. You’ll love everyone at this office. It worth the expense-you’ll have beautiful teeth.”

Another patient writes: “I can say that every appointment…is nothing less than exceptional. The doctors, the staff, and the hygienists all are highly trained and offer a great patient experience. I never feel like I’m at the dentist…it’s like a dental spa!” A different patient rated the practice as very gentle and professional, sayings: “Going to the dentist is not fun, but going to this office has been fun. Dr Nottingham and staff have done a great job to provide me with a healthy gum, and a beautiful smile. I have and always will recommend them to others.”

Some Russian patients come to Smile South Florida for general dentistry services, but most are interested in cosmetic procedures. Veneers are the most popular procedure, but implants and teeth whitening are also big. “The patients tell me that they cannot get these kind of services back home or that the quality of their cosmetic dentistry is not good,” explains Dr. Nottingham. “Sometimes they even pay more than they would back in Russia, but they know that we will do a good job, so they are confident that it is money that is well spent.”

International patients find their way to Dr. Nottingham in a variety of ways. They may locate him when searching on “best cosmetic dentist Florida” in Google or when looking at reviews on Yelp or Dr. Oogle. Many of the patients are repeat customers or have received recommendations from family and friends.

Recognizing that international patients face logistical obstacles, the staff at Smile South Florida is available to lend a helping hand. They often make travel and hotel arrangements for international patients. The office can make special arrangements with upscale hotels and provides recommendations for area spas, attractions, fun activities, and businesses. “Traveling can be tiring, so we want to help make it as pleasant and stress-free as possible.” says Fort Lauderdale, FL cosmetic dentist, Dr. Nottingham. The practice’s staff will also expedite appointments or set up schedules that will allow patients to get their needed services in the timeframe available.

In fact, the staff at Smile South Florida treats every patient like a VIP. The practice’s VIP service provides warm and cold beverages, snacks, blankets, DVD movies, and soothing music on an iPod.

As a Miami cosmetic dentist, Dr. Nottingham also offers his patients all the benefits of a Florida vacation. Patients can combine their dental work with trips to Florida’s beaches or numerous other attractions, including theme parks. Many patients are snow birds who own vacation properties in Florida.

Smile South Florida provides extra assistance to patients who are traveling long distances to take advantage of the practice’s services. The staff at the office can help make travel and hotel arrangements. The practice has special arrangements with top-quality hotels and can recommend area spas, attractions, fun activities, and businesses. It is all part of the office’s VIP service which includes warm and cold beverages, snacks, blankets, DVD movies while waiting, and relaxing music on an iPod. “We want to make every patient’s visit as pleasant and stress-free as possible,” notes Miami cosmetic dentist, Dr. Charles Nottingham. “International patients have done a lot of traveling, so they have a better experience if they are comfortable and at-ease when they get here.”

Visitors from the U.K. come to Smile South Florida for a wide range of cosmetic dentistry services. The most popular is veneers, followed closely by porcelain crowns and teeth whitening. Veneers are wafer-thin, tooth-colored laminates; each is custom made for the patient in a professional dental laboratory. The dentist attaches a veneer to each tooth’s front surface to improve its appearance. Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile, correcting teeth that are stained, damaged, crooked, or misshapen.

Getting veneers can give your smile a total makeover. Smile South Florida can provide a full set of veneers to a patient in just ten days. The office makes every effort to expedite the services to accommodate the schedules of international patients. Sometimes they combine the initial diagnostic visit with the first step in the treatment. Other times they travel to Florida for a first visit, go home, and then return later for the second visit.

“Many British patients feel that they don’t have a lot of choices for quality cosmetic dentistry in the U.K. and the services which are available are expensive,” says Fort Lauderdale cosmetic dentistDr. Nottingham. “They know that we provide superior results. Many of our patients are repeat patients or have been referred to us by friends and family.”

Dental tourism is a growing trend and South Florida is a popular destination for visitors from the U.K. “Some visitors are snowbirds with houses here,” remarks Dr. Nottingham. “Many patients come and enjoy the beach or visit DisneyWorld. You can have a great vacation and go home with a beautiful smile.”

The videos are designed to inform patients about the practice and demonstrate the services they provide; many have been viewed more than 1,000 times.

“We uploaded some of the videos to YouTube a while ago, but we’ve been stunned at how many people have viewed them,” says Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Fort Lauderdale dentist at Smile South Florida. “They’ve been getting 1,000 to 3,000 views! Clearly there are a lot of people on the Internet who are hungry for information about cosmetic dentistry.”

CBS 4 News: A clip from CBS 4 News describes the Ultimate Makeovers project, a program that Dr. Nottingham, a Miami cosmetic dentist, helped to establish. Every year the Ultimate Makeovers Team performs a pro-bono makeover for a deserving member of the community whose income falls 200% below the national poverty line. Components of the makeover may include plastic surgery, laser eye surgery, cosmetic dentistry, and personal training. The CBS 4 clip describes how the program was inspired when a girl wrote to Smile South Florida about how her mother needed cosmetic dentistry. The girl described how her mother wouldn’t leave the house and couldn’t find a job because of her smile.

Smile Gallery: Another YouTube clip features Smile South Florida’s Smile Gallery: a series of before and after pictures of various patients, showing how significantly the cosmetic dentists at Smile South Florida have improved their patients’ smiles. The transformations of some of them patients are quite dramatic. You won’t believe it’s the same person! The Smile Gallery video has 1,042 views.

Florida’s Extreme Makeover Dentist: This short clip gives prospective patients an overview of Smile South Florida’s practice and includes testimonials from former patients who describe the work they had done and how they are complimented on their smiles. The video also features a clip from an interview with Daniel Materdomini, the CEO of da Vinci Studios, the dental lab for ABC’s Extreme Makeover show. He explains how he has seen Dr. Nottingham transform lives. Fort Lauderdale cosmetic dentist Dr. Nottingham himself appears and describes how they strive to make each patient feel comfortable and at home in the office. This video has nearly 1,000 views.

Introduction to Invisalign: This video clip features Dr. Kenneth Anenberg, another Miami cosmetic dentist at Smile South Florida. Dr. Anenberg and a patient demonstrate the process of an initial consultation. He describes Invisalign, shows the patient some sample Invisalign aligners, and explains how the Invisalign process works.
“On the most basic level, the photographs get attached to a patient’s file so that the staff can remember what the patients look like and identify them. But it digital photography also serves some important diagnostic and clinical purposes,” explains Dr. Nottingham, a Miami cosmetic dentist. “I can use the digital photographs to show the patient –right on the computer screen in the office – precisely what is happening with their teeth. We can manipulate the digital image and demonstrate what the patient’s teeth will look like after our treatment. The patients find it extremely valuable to visualize the results of the treatment.”

With some dental problems, there are several potential solutions – each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Nottingham can show digital photographs which demonstrate how other patients responded to similar treatments. “Patients are far more comfortable when they can look at images” explains Fort Lauderdale dentist Dr. Nottingham. “You’re no longer asking them to make a decision with limited information; they have a much better idea of what they’re signing on for.”

Digital photography is also a fast, easy, and very accurate way to document treatment. Dentists can take before and after pictures so that records will accurately reflect the care the dentist has given.

Smile South Florida uses a Canon 60 D Camera with twin flash and a macro lens. The 60 D is a popular camera for digital dental photography since it can instantaneously convert RAW images in-camera into JPEGs that can be displayed on the computer screen. The macro lens and flash allow the dentist to get crisp, detailed images of the inside of the mouth, even zooming in for a close up shot of a single tooth. The Canon and its accessories allow for even lighting, accurate color, and no shadows – factors that are very important in designing a diagnosis and treatment.

Dentists can also use digital images to enhance their practice. They can record the results of various treatments and evaluate the efficacy of different clinical options. Digital photography is also invaluable for doing studies and documenting the results of treatments, so it contributes to dental research and education.

Digital x-rays offer several advantages to patients. Gone are the days of waiting for X-rays to be developed. The cosmetic dentists can view the X-ray images instantly and review them with patients on the computer screen right away. Patients spend more time discussing their teeth with the dentist and less time waiting for the x-rays to be ready. Viewing digital x-rays with our Miami dentists and Fort Lauderdale dentists also means patients will have a better understanding of their dental needs and will be able to make informed decisions about their treatment.

“The Dexis system is a very affordable and effective x-ray option,” says Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentist. “It gives me very precise and clear images, allowing me to make accurate diagnoses. It’s cost effective and it saves me time, which also lowers my costs. I’m able to pass those savings on to my patients in the form of lower charges.”

Sugar: Sugar, of course, is the #1 culprit in causing cavities. The worst offenders are sticky foods like lollipops, hard candies, and gum drops. They give you a double whammy. Not only are they high in sugar, but they also stick to your teeth for a long time after you eat. Surprisingly chocolate is less like to be a culprit because it binds with fat molecules and doesn’t stick to teeth as well as other candies. If you do eat a lot of sugary foods, try to do so at mealtimes when increased saliva can wash sugar off teeth.

Starches: “Bread and potatoes are very popular parts of traditional holiday meals,” points out Dr. Nottingham. “But, the refined flour in white bread and the starch in potatoes are essentially sugars and so will affect your teeth the same way refined sugar does. So cut back on those rolls, mashed potatoes, holiday cookies, and potato chips.”

Alcohol: An occasional drink at a holiday party is okay. But excess alcohol wears away tooth enamel, discoloring teeth and making them vulnerable to cavities.

The good news is there are a lot of foods that are healthy for your teeth as well. “In general most fruits and vegetables help strengthen your teeth – as do a lot of foods containing protein,” says Dr. Nottingham.

Fruits and Vegetables: Any fruit or veggie with a lot of fiber will help out. Onions, celery, kiwis, parsley, and apples are all singled out by experts as being particularly good for your teeth. So look for holiday recipes that include these foods.

Dairy Products: In general cheese, yogurt, milk, and other dairy products (without added sugar), are good choices for the teeth. They help generate saliva which washes sugars off the teeth and they contain calcium, which strengthens them.

People tend to think of beautiful straight teeth as a purely cosmetic concern – a luxury rather than a necessity. However, teeth that are crooked, stained, or have other problems can cause physiological problems in the rest of the body or can be an indicator of other health problems.

“Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean properly, potentially leading to tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss,” notes Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Miami dentist and Fort Lauderdale dentist.”A bad bite can also cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, poor speech, and excessive stress on the jaw bone and gum tissue.”

Poor bites can also influence chewing and swallowing and food selection – leading to nutritional problems. Pain in the jaw or teeth can lead to pain in the head, neck, shoulders, or elsewhere in the body. Oral pain often leads to diminished activity, lost work days, depression, sleep problems, and missed school for children.

“In addition, problems with your teeth can be an indicator of whole-body health issues,” points out Dr. Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentist.”Scientific research indicates a link between gum disease and many other overall health problems including: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, premature births and many more.”

Sometimes teeth can reveal a previously unknown health condition. Conditions that can be detected in the mouth include diabetes (causesgum infections), acid reflux (teeth are much more prone to decay), some auto-immune disorders (the soft tissue in the mouth and salivary glands can be affected), liver diseases (the soft tissue in the mouth is jaundiced) and many more.

On the other hand, teeth that are well-cared for have a host of psychological and physiological benefits. If you visit your doctor regularly you can avoid infections in the mouth that could spread to the rest of the body. “If your bite is well-aligned, your mouth will be comfortable, you’ll be able to speak easily, and you can eat anything you want,” says Dr. Nottingham.”A beautiful smile can increase your self-esteem and encourage you to smile more (something everyone could use!). And increased self-confidence generates success.”

In the spirit of ABC’s Extreme Makeovers and Fox’s the Swan, there is a new standard: The Ultimate Makeover. Those shows have made extreme aesthetic transformations popular nationwide, but the new program offers a twist.

In the Ultimate Makeover Program, Florida’s best doctors and health practitioners go beyond changing people’s looks to transforming their lives. The Ultimate Team will help the less fortunate through community activism and fundraising corporate partnerships as well as through cosmetic procedures.

Nottingham Consulting Group sponsored a research investigation to discover South Florida’s top health practitioners. Each practitioner was selected by an independent panel using Ten Criteria. By qualifying and certifying the team, the community panel ensured that each practitioner meets a high standard of trust and professional ability.

The Ten Criteria are:

1. Years of experience
2. High quality education
3. Good standing in the community
4. Industry accolades and leadership
5. History of published works
6. Client testimonials
7. Tradition of community service
8. Praise from colleagues
9. A high degree of professionalism
10. Marketing

Each year the Ultimate Makeover Team will perform a makeover for a deserving member or members of the community at no cost to the participant. The makeover may include cosmetic dentistry, plastic surgery, laser eye surgery, and personal training. Makeover recipients will be chosen from local charities and the community.

The Ultimate Makeover Project raises money for a charity every year. The charity for 2010 is Women In Distress, the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Florida’s Broward County.

Charles Nottingham, D.D.S., F.A.G.D. was selected for The Ultimate Makeover Team because of his professional recognitions, quality of work, patient support, and community service. He has been hailed by da Vinci Studios, ABC’s Extreme Makeover Dental Lab, as “Florida’s Extreme Makeover Dentist.” Dr. Nottingham has received advanced training from the Pankey Institute and is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Charles Nottingham, a dentist from Smile South Florida, describes the dangers of getting cosmetic procedures from dentists without advanced training and experience.

Nationally there are over 150,000 dentists, and the number is growing at a rapid rate. However, a staggering quantity of inexperienced students graduate from dental school every year and enter directly into practice. Some of these graduates go on to get specialized training in cosmetic dentistry, but many become general dentists who attempt specialized cosmetic dentistry without the necessary expertise.

A survey by Harris Interactive revealed that 11% of Americans annually (and the number grows every year) received an in-office cosmetic dental procedure to beautify their smiles. High-quality cosmetic dentistry can transform your appearance, but poorly executed dentistry can prove disastrous.

Here’s a shocking statistic from the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry: over 25% of Americans’ yearly expenditures cosmetic dentistry is spent re-doing and correcting unsatisfactory dental work from a previous visits. “While cosmetic dentistry can be transformative, badly performed dentistry can lead to a lifetime of pain and problems.” says Dr. Charles Nottingham, one of the best cosmetic dentists in Florida.

A report by the Surgeon General found that over 39 million people, or 22%, experience some kind of oral-facial pain in a given six month period. The report estimates that 12.2% of Americans suffers from toothache, 5.3% from jaw joint pain, and 1.4% from face or cheek pain.

Founder of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, Ronald E. Goldstein estimates that 50% of American dental work is spent on cosmetic procedures. Undoing other dentists’ shoddy work accounts for an estimated one-seventh of the over $80 Billion spent on dentistry in the U.S. In a 2004 Wall Street Journal article, various cosmetic dentists estimated that re-doing others’ work accounts for 25% to 50% of their work.

“You need to be a careful consumer of dental services,” Dr. Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentistry provider, points out. “Do your research and make sure you choose a reputable doctor with a lot of experience in your procedures.”

What can go wrong:

Tooth Failure: Before inserting crowns and veneers, all the decay must be properly removed or massive decay can form says Dr. Nottingham, one of Florida’s best dentists. Not only would that mean that the cosmetic work needs to be redone, but it can also cause root canals, structural tooth failure, or tooth loss.

Jaw and Mouth Pain: If, during a cosmetic dentistry procedure, the jaw is not properly aligned by a dentist who is an expert in bite alignment, the crowns, veneers, or bridges can crack, wear away, or fall out over time. Patients can also develop a condition known as Temporomandibular Joint Disfunction (TMJ or TMD) from a poorly aligned bite. If the restorative porcelain is spaced too close together and doesn’t permit sufficient air passage, patients can experience speech impediments and changes in the formation of some sounds.

Waste of Time: Cosmetic dentistry is usually lengthy and involved, necessitating multiple visits to the dentist. A typical cosmetic treatment takes at least three appointments, and more than 5-10 hours in the dentist’s chair. Just think what would happen if this work is performed poorly and needs to be redone. Patients will need to take off more time from work, and often not at a convenient time.

Expenses: In addition to losing time, you could lose a lot of money. “You get what you pay for” is particularly true for cosmetic dentistry. Many people go cost shopping for dental procedures, but often the dentists who charge less are general dentists who market themselves as cosmetic dentists without putting in the necessary years of experience and continuing education. They may also use poor quality dental labs and cheap materials (such as crowns made in China). So, when you’re considering price, think about the long-term costs as well.

Loss of Initial Investment: If you’re trying to rectify a mess in your mouth, you usually need to start over – from scratch. So, all the money you spend for the initial work is completely lost. This may sound like a rare situation, but it happens every day. “We have seen patients who have spent $30,000 to $50,000 whose mouths were so bad that the only answer was to completely do it over,” Dr. Nottingham, one of South Florida’s best cosmetic dentists.

So what can you, as the patient, do to avoid these situations from occurring and find a highly trained dentist and dental office? Do your research!
