Excitebike World Rally Revs Up Nintendo Downloads

Just as promised, this week’s downloadable games from Nintendo are headed up by Excitebike World Rally, the retro sequel that features online multiplayer and a full track editor for 1,000 Wii Points ($10). Also gracing WiiWare this week are two more titles. Frogger Returns is available for 500 points ($5), and looks to be a 2.5D sequel just like Excitebike. Dragon Master Spell Caster lets you battle with magic and dragons, either in the story mode or multiplayer, for 500 points.

DSiWare has its own bit of nostalgia this week with Bomberman Blitz, an online multiplayer revamp of the classic title available for 500 points. DSiWare is also getting several Electroplankton pieces for 200 points ($2) each: Trapy, Hanenbow, Red-Rec, Nanocarp, and Beatnes.

Somehow, Sega has done the impossible: reacquired Michael Jackson’s likeness rights for a digital re-release of Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker. At least, that appears to be the case, because the game has been re-rated by PEGI for release on Virtual Console. To give you an idea of the ridiculousness of that feat, Q? Entertainment has yet to release its PSP game Lumines for download on the same system because it has yet to acquire a license for digital release of its music.

We don’t know if this will be the Genesis version or the very different arcade game — or even, we suppose, the Master System port of the Genesis game. We’re contacting Sega for those and other details. Right after we catch a shooting star and turn into robotic, missile-firing versions of ourselves. Ow!

Penny Arcade Launches 2009 Child’s Play Charity Drive

It’s that time of year again, folks. Penny Arcade has announced the official start of the 2009 Child’s Play charity drive, where throughout the holiday season gamers (or anyone, really) can make gift or money donations to children’s hospitals around the world.

As before, participating in the charity drive is made excruciatingly simple: Just click on over to the official Child’s Play website, choose one of the participating children’s hospitals from the map, and you’ll be taken to that hospital’s Amazon wish list where you can purchase one of the many listed items for donation. If you’d rather donate money directly, you can do so through PayPal here.

Through sponsorships from various organizations, the tally so far already exceeds $250,000, and that’s before donations from the public at large got underway. Looks like this is already shaping up to be another big success for a charity that’s done a lot of great work over the last few years.

Nintendo ‘hasn’t committed’ to new Zelda for Wii in 2010

We all know that home console Zelda games take longer to develop than most small, fledgling nations — still, we’d secretly hoped that Nintendo would pull a hat trick next year, releasing new Wii installments in the Metroid, Mario and the aforementioned Triforce-centric series. Sadly, a recent quote from Reggie Fils-Aime has made us doubtful that this scenario will be realized — speaking on GameTrailers TV, Fils-Aime explained that Nintendo hasn’t “committed to Zelda for 2010.”

So, feel free to keep that hope in your heart that you’ll be Ganon-thwarting once more within the next 365 days — but don’t get too upset if it doesn’t happen. Much like a college-aged Lothario, Nintendo’s remaining non-committal. You might say the company’s as free as a bird, darling — and this bird, you cannot change.
