The Sony Cyber-shot W300 is one of the best looking compact digital camera we have reviewed recently. It offers great performance and is very easy to operate although as with any electronic products there are a few minor flaws.

The one thing that really stands out with this camera is its handsome looks, the camera is finished in a metalic dark grey with a black and silver flash. Of all the digital cameras we have reviewed recently this camera really stands out.

The cameras controls can take a bit of getting use to but are pretty simple to use. The controls consist of a D-pad, four buttons and a forward facing rocker. The two buttons are difficult to use with your right hand but a good feature is the ‘home button’, which allows you to quickly navigate to the start of the menu.

The photo quality from the camera is of a high standard, and the W300’s 13.6 megapixel sensor produces some great images with great depth and colour. Another great feature of the camera is its ‘SuperSteadyShot stabilization system which is great for those of us with shakey hands.

The W300 offers you the chance to take images in ‘manual mode’ which can help take great images, although there are no aperture or shutter controls, although if you are interested in this type of functionality you really should be looking for a slr digital camera.

The main downside with this camera is the fact that it does’nt use SD Card Media for storage but instead uses its own version, which are more expensive.

Pros - amazing looks and style, good picture output, good value for money

Cons - does’nt use the industry standard SD Card for storage

The Fuji FinePix F50fd comes with a bargin price tag which is a considerable amount cheaper than its rivals for example the Canon lxus 970IS is a whooping £111 more expensive. Again with any so called bargin digital camera bargin you have to watch out for a catch, in this case the catch is ‘quality’. Although for for an average camera user its fine only the professional photographer may find it lacking that cutting edge

The Fuji FinePix comes with a 12 mega pixel sensor which allows for 20% more detailed images than many of its 10 mega pixel rivals. Don’t let this fool you though many of the pictures we took using the camera came out fuzzy and full of noise (its not our camera taking ability we a sure you!). However colour output was of a decent standard and we were able to produce some good vibrant shots although the quality was not as good as the lxus 970 digital camera

Our favorite feature of this camera is a natural and flash feature which takes two pictures at once one using the flash one with out. This a great little feature and real gem when you are not decided what the shot will look like without the flash etc. As with most compact digital cameras the manual controls are basic but has everything you would expect from a compact camera including aperture control.

Pros - great price for people on a budget, innovative functions

Cons - fuzzy, noisy output, terrible anti shake system

With the release of the Nikon D4Oc, Nikon are trying to compete with the Canon EOS 400D and the Sony Alpha 100, as this camera comes with a 10mp resultion APS-C size sensor, along with a decent price tag.

A great feature of this camera is its ISO settings the minimum setting is of the ISO is 100 ideal for controling depth in bright light conditions. As with other Nikon cameras in the same range the D40x maintains the required and useable ISO of 3200. Another Handy little feature is the cameras continous shooting rate of 2.5 to 3 frame per seconds, perfect for camera shoots that require quick and numerous photos.

Some of the features we really liked about Nikon D40c was the peerless viewfinder image, two per cent spot-metering, coupled with the innovative sensitivity priority ISO auto option makes this a great cameras. As with all SLR digital cameras the main focus on design lies within the functionality of the camera before the ergonmics. However don’t let this fool you the ergonmics of this camera are brilliant careful thought has been taken over every little detail.

Score out of 10 - 10/9

Pros - Durable build, large lcd screen, ISO maximum 3200

Cons - auto focus limited AF-S or AF-I lenses. Menu dependant opertaion. No built in sensor cleaning

It offers a wide range of manual control and a user friendly optical view finder. It has a mode wheel which allows you to select from full-auto, anit-shake, scene, movie, program AE, aperture priority, shutter-priority, ISO 3200 and full manual modes. On the back are function, display playback and delete buttons.

>

The handrip on the main body makes it safe to hold, however, when turned off it feels chunkier than it’s rivals.

It is an excellent choice for a sharp, detailed quality camera that you would be happy to carry for most of the time. If the quality of output is more important than having to wade through the menu and be patient with the slow focus - it is an excellent choice.

Pros: excellent picture quality and a wide set of manual controls.

Cons: not very user-friendly menu, slow autofocus and a chunky main body.

SLR Digital Camera score: 8/10

The Casio Exilim Card s10 is an extremely slim line compact camera that would fit in the smallest of pockets, it comes in a number of different of different colours including Apple-White, Ferrari red, company-blue and gothic black depending on your personal preference.

The rear of the camera mainly consists of a large lcd screen sued to view photos etc, although the LCD screen is a nice feature it leaves little room for any controls. We are however offered five buttons and a D-pad which are tiny and hard to use unless you are gifted with pixie like hands. Again the zoom control is small and limits the range which makes it difficult to get your desired zoom.

Small controls aside the S10 is easy to use and the LCD screen is well designed and gives you quick access to features such as flash control , resolution, shutter mode and ISO rating. We are also provided with further advanced options through the use of a menu button - which can be pretty handy but again these function are not that advanced (it is a compact after all and not an Slr Digital Camera)

The cameras output are not particularly impressive we found that the camera performed poorly in low light conditions and some images it produced were quite blurry.

Pros - pocket sized, great navigation controls

Cons - Tiny buttons, few manual controls and occasional blurry output

Rating - 7.5/10 (we couldn’t give it a full 8, due to its output)

The Canon lxus range is well known for its styling above anything else, the 970 IS’s has both substance along with its great design. Although the camera looks great along with all the cameras in the Lxus range, the ergonomics of the camera are second rate. It’s a real pity because the camera has the ability to take some amazing high quality images.

The camera is finished in a metalic blus-ish silver and has curves that Beyonce would be proud of, however the curved right hand side of the camera makes it difficult to grip whilst taking photos. Most features on the camera are fiddly and hard to operate for example the zoom control knob is tiny and hard to get the right level of zoom quickly that you require.

The manual controls for the camera are located on the rear of the camera, the main downfall with the camera controls is that is a delay when changing settings and anything happening - making it difficult to get the correct settings for your photos

Once you have mastered the awkward camera controls on the canon digital Lxus 970IS you will generally find you can get some great photos. The shots we took were of high quality with clean and vibrant colours, again the camera performs well in low light conditions. The camera also benefits from a great 5x zoom which is a higher than the rest of Lxus range which all feature 3x zoom’s.

Over all the camera is a decent buy the main downfall is mastering the controls that can take time but overall output is of good quality

Overall star rating 7/10

Interested in similar cameras why not view this great camera

You may want an SLR digital camera because you are about to take a photography class, you may want one because you saw your colleague’s spanking new digital camera that he used in your company’s outing or you may want one just so you could capture all the precious moments you and your family will be sharing from here and on. Whatever your reason is, you are craving, and you absolutely want an SLR digital camera, the king of all the digital cameras out there.

Problem is you know absolutely nothing about SLR digital cameras. Now what? Do not worry, below are some easy to follow steps and some easy to remember guidelines in buying your very own SLR digital camera.

Set a budget

If you don’t you will end up maxing out your credit card or worse, you might end up using the money you have saved up for that trip to Bora-Bora for one digital SLR. Honestly calculate what you know your budget can handle and if you are a beginner, do not forget that aside from the camera body itself, you may also have to buy a professional lens (which is an advise usually given to new photographers), a memory card large enough to store high resolution pictures, a chic camera bag (for those that are not happy with the usual free bags that a camera comes with) and spare batteries.

Select a camera you have a “chemistry” with

You camera has to be compatible to you. If you are an outdoorsy person, then it must be lightweight and compact. If you usually use it in a very limited area, then bulky digital cameras may not be a huge problem. If your camera shop will allow you to test the product first, make sure you take that option so you can have a “test drive”. A common mistake that new SLR camera owners make is that they are not compatible with their SLR digital cameras and they end up as decorations in the house.
