Chris Shepherd here. Just thought I’d let you know that Richard Laxton’s Englishman In New York has been completed. It’s the long awaited sequel to the 70’s classic The Naked Civil Servant. The original had such a big impact on me, as it did everyone, brushing away so much nonsense and bullshit of the day. John Hurt plays Quentin Crisp again now in New York in the eighties. What’s remarkable is the way Hurt plays the same character thirty years on. It’s like the role sat there for him for him all that time. Think its released at Christmas. Well worth waiting for. It’s hard to forget the message of hope for all housewives.

KICKING AND SCREENING PRESENTS

Following on from Bob’s screening at the Crown and Two Chairmen. Kicking and Screening offers a one off chance to see some of the work of British animation giant Bob Godfrey. In true K&S style we will be showing a mix of action with an ultra rare chance to see some of Bob’s live action works - Battle of New Orleans and L’art Pour L’art. There’s also some animation classics - Dream Doll, Instant Sex, Henry 9 ‘til 5, Roobarb and Kevin Baldwin’s The Losers’ Club. Plus guests. Curated by Chris Shepherd and Tom Lowe.

There’s a new festival of new cinema and digital culture starting in Liverpool on the 23rd-27th September 2009. It’s called Abandon Normal Devices. It’s going to be held at various Liverpool venues including FACT. Slinky’s Chris Shepherd is lined up to take part in a event on the 25th. Other stand out events include talks with Duane Hopkins and Ken Russell.

Chris Shepherd here. There’s been a big battle brewing in Crystal Palace between the locals and an evangelical church. KICC want to convert the old Granada Cinema into a church. With over 4000 facebook and petition signatures the picture palace campaign have been doing thier best to have the cinema restored to its former glory. If you get a chance why not sign the petition or join thier facebook profile.

RIP ANDY PARLE

Chris Shepherd here. I was shocked to see one of my old mates had died on the 2nd August. He collapsed in a Dingle Street. He was only 42. Andy Parle was the drummer for 90’s band SPACE. A really nice bloke. Solid and down to Earth. One of a gang of lovely people I used to hang out with in 80’s scouseland. My thoughts go out to his family. Berine did a nice tribute.

Our new Kicking and Screening season deserved a new Kicking and Screening Flyer. Joseph Mann, one of the recent Slinky directors to come aboard and one of the featured filmmakers on the night.

Joseph’s graduation film ‘The Chimney Sweep’ will be shown with live musical accompaniment from composer Jonathon Smith. Also featuring the work of Esther May Campbell, Johnny Barrington and Gregor Dashuber.

As ever, Kicking and Screening is cureated and hosted by Chris Shepherd. Hope to see you next week.

One of our dearest friends, and also a Slinky director, Laura Heit is getting married tomorrow to her lovely Kris! We wish we could be in sunny LA with her but, alas, we are here in cloudy London. ::sigh::

We wish the Bride and Groom all the very best of wealth, health and happiness in their new life together. And yes, Kris is dressed as Arbor Day. Laura is dressed as Valentine’s Day. Do they need a reason?

Our lovely director Emily Skinner is also a fabulous illustrator and painter. Since her two little ones were born, she’s been creating original artwork specifically for children’s bedrooms. Such a nice idea. You can have your very own Skinner painting and also see loads more of her work by visiting her gallery. She also has a stall at Greenwich Market most Sundays so do say hello if you’re out and about this weekend.

Chris Shepherd here. Looking at the Electric in Dorset reminded me that I found some great footage the other day. It’s of Alex Cox in The Futurist on Lime Street, Liverpool. I used to go there as a kid and like Alex was blown away by it. One of my biggest Futurist moments was seeing 2001: a space odyssey in 78. It changed my life. Then there was Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Blazing Saddles. 70mm and sensoround. It was a catherdal of cinema. It broke my heart when it closed in 82. I couldn’t get it out of my mind, I even made a cinema in the back yard for my toys. Amazingly twenty seven years on, despite the cinema’s inner city location it’s still stands empty - with a hole in the roof.

Electric Cinema in Dorset

If anyone is heading out to Dorset over the holiday period, its worth swinging by Bridport to see the Electric Cinema there. Its a stunning restored picture house, that is sure to lift your heart.
From the 6th to 25th July you can also catch a Ralph Steadman exhibition on there, and who knows you might
even bump into PJ Harvey.

Chris Shepherd here. I was a judge at the Stuttgart Animation Festival the other week. There was this great film that didn’t get a prize. But made me laugh. It’s called KJFG No.5. It’s from the mind of Alexeev Alexey. Enjoy!
