[tweetmeme]Peter Hook today announced that he will return to North America this September with his band The Light to perform New Order’s first two albums — 1981′s Movement and 1983′s Power, Corruptions & Lies — in their entirety, as well as various singles and B-sides “from the corresponding period of the band’s history,” on an 11-date tour.

The tour, Hook’s first U.S. trek in two years, will also include a previously announced slot at Chicago’s Riot Fest, where he’ll perform an exclusive Joy Division set.

The trek opens Sept. 10 in Boston and continues through Sept. 28 in Denver, hitting Riot Fest sometime between Sept. 13 and 15 and also including a Seattle show that is part of that city’s Decibel Festival.

[tweetmeme]Former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck plans to release something he’s calling a new “monkey concept single” in the coming weeks on vinyl label Mississippi Records as well as re-press his 2012 solo debut — but without the song “LVMF,” because he only cleared its profane Sonny Boy Williamson sample for the album’s first 2,000 copies.

Buck announced the news in a note updating fans on his “fantabulous career” that was posted to R.E.M.’s official site Thursday night and came accompanied by a photo (reproduced above) featuring a guitar-wielding man — Buck himself? — clad in pink pajamas and a gorilla mask.

As for his solo album — which still only has been officially released on vinyl — Buck expresses surprise in how quickly it sold out its original 2,000-copy run last fall, but says he’ll have a new version pressed shortly, once again on Portland’s Mississippi Records, but without the Williamson-sampling “LVMF,” which he notes “is on you-tube and is relatively inconsequential anyway.”

Hey this is Peter,

I just wanted to keep you all up on what is going on with my fantabulous career. I have a new single coming out in the next two weeks on Mississippi Records. It’s a monkey concept single. There will be about a 1000 available and can be ordered from your regular indie record stores.

I would like to apologize for the current unavailability of my solo record. My assumption was that a record from a non-singing, non-lyricist member of REM, released only on vinyl, would sell some where in the region of about 800 records, leaving me with 1200 of the things in my basement. It was extremely gratifying to find them sold out immediately. Unfortunately, I only cleared the samples for LVMF for 2000 copies. It has taken me awhile to get the the record re-pressed without that track. It should be available in the next couple of weeks. This being indie world, all dates are approximate, but again it can be ordered through your local independent music store or you may contact Mississippi Records in Portland. LVMF will not be on the re-pressed version, but it is on you-tube and is relatively inconsequential anyway.

I will be touring Spain and Norway this summer with my solo band and Robyn and hope to see you all there.

[tweetmeme]After first battling head and neck cancer in 2007, Philip Chevron — who first joined The Pogues shortly after the release of the Celtic rockers’ 1984 debut Red Roses For Me — this week announced that his cancer is back, and that, this time, it’s “inoperable and will prove fatal in time, though it is at present impossible to measure life expectancy.”

In a statement posted on The Pogues’ website, Chevron says, “This time the cancer is lethal.”

The disease returned last summer, and while Chevron performed with the band in September for the concerts that were recorded for its The Pogues in Paris live audio/video package, he is now taking a break from The Pogues, who are described as being on a “prolonged time out,” as well as his other, even longer-running project that he fronts, The Radiators From Space.

Pogues and Radiators from Space guitarist Philip Chevron has revealed that the head & neck cancer for which he received treatment in 2007 and a clean bill of health in April 2012 has in fact returned. In August 2012, Chevron and his doctors noticed a new tumour and this one is in a position whereby treatment is seriously ill-advised and would almost certainly cause Stroke or worse. Chevron, who was last year part of the releases “The Pogues In Paris” on Polydor and the Radiators’ “Sound City Beat” on Chiswick, is currently taking a break from both bands. The Pogues are on a prolonged time out, emerging only in support of matters relating to their 30th anniversary this year, while the Radiators from Space have formed a splinter group, The Trouble Pilgrims, in which Chevron plays no part. In recent times, Chevron has accepted several theatre music commissions, including the Old Vic Theatre in London and Galway’s Druid Theatre.

Philip thanks his friends, colleagues, family and management team for their enduring support and hopes to make some notable musical contributions before, as he puts it, the cancer becomes “lethal”.

[tweetmeme]Since last we checked in with The Psychedelic Furs back in March, the band has considerably expanded its summer touring plans, with at least 35 dates announced so far in a trek that will keep Richard Butler and Co. on the road in the U.S. from late May through early September — including a pair on the East Coast with The Go-Go’s.

The tour opens May 31 in Agoura Hills, Calif., and continues through late June before picking up again from mid-July through early August. Following another break, dates have no begun to be announced in late August and early September, culminating, at the moment, with a show in Lincoln, Neb., on Sept. 9 (see full dates below). The Furs play with The Go-Go’s in Vienna, Va., and Red Bank, N.J.

The summer dates are the first for the Furs since the band canceled a run of New Year’s shows in Las Vegas and California while Butler recovered from spinal surgery.

It’s not clear yet whether these are the band’s final dates or whether more are being added; the band has steadily been adding concerts to its summer itinerary.
