Ex-Crowded House Drummer Peter Jones Dies at 45 The drummer, who joined the band in 1994 after Paul Hester quit and remained until the band split in 1996, is said to have died after battling brain cancer. Crowded House, on the band’s website, posted the following statement about the passing of their former bandmate: ”We are in mourning today for the death of Peter Jones. We remember his as a warm-hearted, funny and talented man, who was a valuable member of Crowded House. He played with style and spirit. We salute him and send out love and best thoughts to his family and friends.” [Billboard.com]

The Thirteenth Step: Soulsavers Interviewed Soulsavers’ Rich Machin and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode are interviewed about their new album together, The Light the Dead See, which arrives this week. Morrissey’s Case Against NME Set for July The former Smiths frontman will jet back and forth between London and Athens and Istanbul this July as his libel case against the NME is now set to be heard July 16-19, during his summer tour. [tweetmeme]When The Housemartins split in 1988, legend has it the band’s members vowed they’d never reunite. Nearly a quarter century later, that remains as true, according to bassist Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, who this morning told a BBC radio interviewer that it would take an equally unlikely reunion of The Smiths to spur his bandmates into action.

Cook was interviewed by BBC Radio 5′s Colin Paterson because he’s performing, as Fatboy Slim, at the Big Beach Bootique next month at Brighton’s new football stadium.

The subject then turned to band reunions:

“Couple years ago, we all met for the 25th anniversary, I believe, of London O Hull 4. We had lunch together and we renewed our vows to never get back together again. We just all looked at each other and said, ‘Do you still not want to do this?’ We’re all a lot happier being friends rather than being in a band with each other. I don’t think we really want to go back, and we don’t need the money. What I’d say is, The Smiths said they would only get back together if the queen would abdicate. So how about: The Housemartins will only get back together if The Smiths reform.”

[tweetmeme]Via the release of the One Drop EP last month, we’ve heard four of the new Public Image Ltd. tracks that will appear on This Is PiL, the reconstituted group’s first new album in 20 years, which arrives May 28 in the U.K. and May 29 in the U.S.  Now comes a fifth new track, via Rolling Stone: “Deeper Water,” which John Lydon tells the magazine was “an improv, done in one take. [tweetmeme]With the My Bloody Valentine’s long-delayed reissues now out and Kevin Shields talking openly about a new album, it appears 2013 will see actual MBV activity: The band is scheduled to perform three concerts in Japan next February, which would mark the dormant group’s first performances since 2009.

According to Time Out Japan (via Pitchfork), My Bloody Valentine will play Osaka on Feb. 6 and then Tokyo on Feb. 7 and 8. So far, no official word from the MBV camp on these dates or additional touring plans for 2013. Last week, the band finally released the long-promised 2-disc reissue of 1991 classic Loveless and its predecessor, 1988′s Isn’t Anything.

[tweetmeme]The inimitable Robyn Hitchcock this week announced he is recording a new album — provisionally titled File Under Pop — that’s being eyed for a January release, but, in the meantime, he’s giving away two “interim tracks” as free downloads, including one recorded with singer-songwriter KT Tunstall singing harmonies.

Hitchcock made the announcement via the video clip posted above, revealing he’s at work with bassist and producer Paul Noble on the project. The two new songs — “There Goes the Ice,” with Tunstall, and “There Goes Sam Surfer” — are being made available as free downloads as part of Hitchcock’s “Phantom 45s” series, as well as through Yep Roc Records’ 15th anniversary celebrations, which Hitchcock is taking part in.

Yep Roc announced Wednesday that Hitchcock will join Nick Lowe, John Doe and more at the label’s 15th anniversary concert at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, N.C., on Oct. 11-13.

[tweetmeme]Between The Psychedelic Furs’ late-spring and early-fall runs of shows in the northeastern and southwestern portions of the U.S., the band will return to its native U.K. for a seven-date tour this summer that includes the band’s previously announced slot at the Hop Farm Festival alongside headliners Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan and Suede.

The new U.K. shows open June 29 in Edinburgh and run through July 6 in Nottingham, hitting cities such as London and Manchester, plus the July 1 appearance at the Hop Farm fest.

Prior to that, in late May and early June, the Furs play five shows in Massachusetts and New York. Then, in September, the band returns for six shows in Texas, New Mexico and California, including the “Totally 80s” concert at the Hollywood Bowl headlined by The Go-Gos and also featuring The Motels and Bow Wow Wow. The Furs support The Go-Gos again in Saratoga, Calif.
