[tweetmeme]Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is helping make a feature-length documentary about the so-called “Woodstock of the ’80s” — the 1982 US Festival, which featured Talking Heads, Oingo Boingo, The B-52s, The Cars, Ramones, Gang of Four and more — to be released this Labor Day weekend on the event’s 30th anniversary.

According to a news release (via Waist High), Woz’s UNUSON Corporation is teaming with ICON Television Music and Plum Moving Media to make “The US Generation,” a 90-minute film featuring new interviews and original audio and video from the festival that’s been newly remastered. The film currently is scheduled to be released Sept. 3.

Carlos Harvey, CFO of UNUSON, says in the statement:

“This film is the only authorized and sanctioned documentary of the 1982 US Festival. It captures the cultural essence of the festival and tells the behind-the-scenes stories the fans will appreciate. I’ve had thousands of calls and e-mails from attendees over the years about when we’ll release a film about the US Festival. After 30 years it seems like the right time so the fans can relive the experience and we can create new fans, too.”

More than 375,000 people attended the first of two US Festivals on 57 acres at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernadino, Calif., over Labor Day weekend in 1982, baking under the 110-degree sun to see three days of music and five tents’ worth of technology exhibits featuring the “latest in cutting-edge computers, software, video games and electronic musical devices.”

The event’s first day featured a cutting-edge music bill, with most of the aforementioned acts playing in a lineup headlined by The Police. The second and third days featured more mainstream fare, with performances by the likes of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac and The Grateful Dead.

Although it doesn’t appear the film will touch on the second festival, the 1983 installment was spread over four days, drew nearly twice as many people and featured a lineup that included The Clash, David Bowie and U2, plus the event’s famous “Metal Day,” with Van Halen, Scorpions, Motley Crue and more.

Wozniak, in the news release, says: “The US Festival was not a charity event. It was a rock concert to bring music, technology and people together. It was an event to unite government, industry, science and education to improve the quality of life for everyone.”

Entitled “A Conversation with Mr. Gambaccini,” the two-part doc — which can be seen via the videos posted above — features radio DJ Paul Gambaccini interviewing DM’s Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher and Alan Wilder about the then-new album and more.

[tweetmeme]The reunited ’80s-era lineup of Ultravox — featuring Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Chris Cross and Warren Cann — today announced a 13-date U.K. tour this September and October in support of the band’s forthcoming comeback album, Brilliant — the first new album from that lineup in nearly three decades.

Tickets for the tour, which opens Sept. 21 in Bristol and runs through Oct. 7 in Glasgow, go on sale to the general public on Friday, but if you head over to the band’s website, there’s information about several presales, for those who’d like to get an early crack at tickets.

In March, Ultravox announced plans to release Brilliant, the ’80s lineup’s first new album together in 28 years. The record — the first from Ultravox since 1994′s Ingenuity, and the first from the band’s most commercially successful lineup since 1984′s Lament — is due out May 28 in the U.K.

[tweetmeme]The story of the Meat Puppets will be told through new interviews with Peter Buck, J Mascis, Ian MacKaye, Flea, Henry Rollins, Lee Ranaldo, Mike Watt and more in Greg Prato’s new authorized, 407-page oral history of the legendary indie-rockers, “Too High to Die: Meet the Meat Puppets,” due out June 1.

According to a news release, Prato, a journalist and longtime fan, wrote the book with the band’s full cooperation. The book covers “the writing/recording of such classic albums as Meat Puppets II and Up on the Sun, the group’s appearance on Nirvana’s classic ‘MTV Unplugged’ episode, the story behind their breakthrough hit single ‘Backwater,’ and how the Kirkwood brothers reunited in 2006, after being apart for nearly a decade.”

Curt Kirkwood is quoted on the book’s back cover:

“It’s a very strange, wonderful experience to read…I love the way it flows…a linear time capsule compendium of the band’s past…so many perspectives tied together so well. [tweetmeme]The Jesus and Mary Chain will join headliners Iggy and the Stooges and Elvis Costello at this September’s punk-heavy Riot Fest 2012 in Chicago, promoters announced this week, marking the latest U.S. date to be added to the slow-roll out of the Mary Chain’s still-evolving summer North American tour this summer.

As Consequence of Sound notes, the festival is set for Sept. 14-16 in Chicago’s Congress Theatre and Humboldt Park, and also features Rise Against, Descendants, The Offspring, GWAR, Built to Spill and Fishbone, among many others. Tickets already are on sale at $65 for two-day passes and $90 for three-day passes, although it’s not yet known which bands are playing which days.

The Mary Chain — who this weekend will play their first-ever concert in China — so far have announced four June concerts in California and Nevada, to be followed in August and September by a run of dates in Canada  and in the eastern U.S. In March, the brothers Reid played their first concerts in four years in Texas, including a performance at South By Southwest.
