As Dr. Curtis said, "The system was made to acknowledge the positive while also dealing with the negative."
Based on the system at Pioneer, the IDEA slip system, is a "punishment" system that puts the power in the hands of the teachers. "By taking the power out of the classroom and out of the teachers hands, you are showing the students that the teachers are powerless. That provokes disrespect in students," said Dr. Curtis.
For the students who don't show up for detention after their second IDEA slip, there is a running list and students who don't show up after five days, there is a meeting set up with Dr. Curtis and a parent. "I think that there is a lot of bravado in the hall's, who's going and who's not, but most everybody shows up within that five day period."
Speaking of lists, after fourteen days or two weeks the list of students who have gotten n idea slip is cleared. The information i still saved, "but focusing on the positive means forgiving after a period of time."
Since everything is electronic, the data is saved on a database and is always being looked at. The committee that is responsible for the IDEA slip looks at which infractions occur the most and which ones occur the least among other items to improve the IDEA slip.
THis is the first year of the IDEA slip and it will, without a doubt, change and improve over the years. Remember the idea behind the IDEA slip is the acknowledge the positive and deal with the negative that occurs because, "80% of the Skyline population is doing the right thing 99% of the time."

Obama and Afghanistan by Matthew Conto

http://skylinenewspaper.weebly.com/articles/obama-and-afghanistan-by-matthew-conto

http://skylinenewspaper.weebly.com/articles/obama-and-afghanistan-by-matthew-conto#comments

Uncategorized

On March 30th 2009, president Barack Obama announced that the USA would be refocusing its troops in the Middle East to the war on the Taliban in Afghanistan. For the past few years, we've had troops in Afghanistan but they have been working more on rebuilding Afghanistan. Obama's new plan outlines sending over 19,000 troops into Afghanistan and some troops onto the Pakistan/Afghanistan border.
Troops have been in Afghanistan for a while. Since October 7th 2001 (26 days after September 11th) the USA has been working on "Operation Enduring Freedom" based on getting back specifically at the Taliban who as far as US intelligence knows, where the people behind the September 11th attacks.
What has presumably sparked these US troop movements would be the Taliban taking over the Afghan government. In 2004, after the US half-successfully removed the Taliban from government, they came back ruling from the background. The Taliban just to clarify is a Muslim group in the Middle East declared by the US as a terrorist organization which believes in older, stricter, Islamic values. So in March 2009, the US under Barack Obama will be sending over 19,000 troops into Afghanistan to assist in preventing the Taliban from taking over. On March 31st, the USA and Iran met in the Netherlands to discus troop movements. This is the first time in over 30 years that the two nations have had discussions. The main public reaction has been of confusion and of Afghanistan being another Iraq. Obama has stated that this mission is to only take out the Taliban not to take over and rebuild a country. This troop deployment is still nowhere the 152,000 troops originally sent to Iraq. This isn't as bad as Iraq, and will (with luck) be a successful mission for our troops overseas.

Staying True to Yourself by Maddie Mayleben

http://skylinenewspaper.weebly.com/articles/staying-true-to-yourself-by-maddie-mayleben

http://skylinenewspaper.weebly.com/articles/staying-true-to-yourself-by-maddie-mayleben#comments

student life

In life, there are going to be times where you feel like you are never good enough. There is no way to prevent this feeling, but the important thing is to stay true to yourself. "This is the best annoying song I have ever heard," says Rachel Feeney.
Another catchy song released to the public was "I'm on a boat" by the Lonely Island featuring T-pain. The title of this song is pretty much self explanatory, the short and simple explanation of the song is that the group the Lonely Island is on a boat having a good time with rapper/singer T-pain. Juliet Rutledge's, a first time listener, immediate reaction to the song was "That's dumb!" Rachel and Juliet's reaction to these songs are completely normal; hilarious, and yet completely true at the same time. Many songs have been released this year that also are very catchy to us teens, but not so much to adults. The list goes on and on with pointless songs that people love, unfortunately some cannot be mentioned because of their content and some have not been released yet.
