Your Money & Your Wedding Cake

I am so excited about this series and instead of just only sharing my experiences with you regarding wedding vendors, I figured I would get some of my preferred vendors to chime in. There is nothing better than hearing it right from the vendors mouth!

This post is about your Cake Budget. I interviewed one of my favorite and most trusted vendor, Gail Buff from the fabulous Cheesecake, Etc in Charlotte, NC. She offered a lot of insight to brides as they prepare their budget for their wedding cake. I asked Gail several questions and below are her responses.

1. What is the price range per serving for your wedding cakes?

Every baker has a different price range for their cakes. Mine start at $3.75 per person and go up from there. The most expensive cake I have done was at $10.00 per person. Most average about $4.00 - $4.25.

2. Do certain designs and flavors cost more money?

Yes- certain designs and flavors cost more. Basic designs include single dots, tricot dots and scrolls. My basic flavors include chocolate, vanilla, almond, pound and lemon. The basic filling is butter cream. Items that add to the cost of a cake include intricate designs, dragees, multiple colors, anything made of fondant, gumpaste flowers, stenciling, and hand painted designs.

3. If a bride wants five layers and five different flavor cakes and fillings is that more expensive?

If a bride wants a cake that is five tiers and five different flavors and fillings, that may or may not add to her cost. If all five flavors are standards, then I do not charge more. The fillings would add a bit to the price. I recommend that my brides limit their flavor choices to two. This will give their guests choices, but not so many that the guests will want to sample a piece of every flavor offered!

4. How many flavors of cake and fillings do you try at your cake tasting?

At my tasting, I suggest that my brides select up to four cake flavors and three fillings to mix and match. More than this can be a bit overwhelming!

5. Do you as the cake designer, decorate the wedding cake with fresh flowers?

As a cake designer, I will definitely decorate the cake with fresh flowers. Fresh flowers on the cake will match exactly with the other flowers from the event. This is a more cost effective choice than sugar flowers that can be very pricey. I prefer to add the flowers to the cake myself. If the florist adds the flowers and they inadvertently stick a finger in the cake, they can't fix it!!! When I leave the venue, I make sure that the cake is set up, flowers and/or topper in place, and empty box for the cake top under the table.

6. What advice would you give a bride about their cake budget?

Budgeting for a wedding cake can be a bit tricky. All the cake shows on television show us these fabulous cakes. Remember that they come with fabulous prices!! Don't forget to include delivery/set up costs and a cake stand. For a wedding with 150 guests, brides should budget a minimum of $650.00. This cost can be cut by having a smaller cake on display and then serving sheet cakes from the kitchen. "Fake" cake layers do NOT save any money. Those layers also have to be decorated!!!

Well I have revived my blog from the dead. I had not written in awhile because the inspiration had not been there. But like I said on twitter this morning, sometimes it takes something crazy to jolt you back on the grind. So I'm back!!!

This is the beginning of a series about spending your money for your wedding. A touchy subject I know, but I think brides and grooms need to know what is realistic and what is "fantasy wedding TV shows". So, what I will be doing is making this as basic and elementary as possible, because I want everyone to know what can really happen with YOUR budget. So I welcome your comments and please share with any bride you know who is living in "wedding tv" fantasy land.

I know if you are planning your wedding you have seen this list before, but please know that the brides who are chosen for that "fantasy wedding television show" are not presented with a budget. Therefore, anything is possible, because she is on TV!!! We will look at all of these vendor costs individually so you can have a realistic expectation of what each vendor costs, so you can properly budget.

The goal of this series is for couples to plan the beautiful wedding THEY can afford. Inspiration for your wedding can be received from wedding blogs, magazines and television, but you have to allow your budget dictate what you do with that inspiration.

Charlotte Wedding: FAMU graduates at The Duke Mansion

Ok, well for those of you who really know me, know that I LOVE my school Florida A&M University. I am a very proud Rattler. So imagine my delight to book a couple who met and fell in love at FAMU. This May wedding was truly a labor of love for me. During the planning process I hardly spoke with Candace + Daniel (CanDan), but worked directly with the mother of the bride, Mary Wilson and enjoyed every moment. I got a glimpse of how detailed I'll be when helping my own daugher (Ronni) plan her wedding, many years from now of course. :-)

Your Summer Wedding : Make it Interactive

Making wedding receptions interactive has been a growing trend for years and has been one of my favorites that have come along. Keep in mind guests will be overjoyed to enjoy great food, delicious cake and to dance the night away, but to have a little something fun for them to do is always a nice touch. Here are a few of my favorites.

So who doesn't like smores? Having this delicious treat at your summer wedding will allow guests to transport back to their childhood while making these yummy treats.

Now everyone by now knows what a candy buffet is, but just in case you've been under a rock most candy buffets are stocked with favorite candies of the bride and groom in really cute containers for the guests to take a few pieces to enjoy at the reception or later. It's a wonderful favor for your guests. Because remember your favors should be either edible or practical. (Image from All You Can Treat)

Now, on to my favorite interactive fun thing to do at a wedding...It's the photobooth. Shutterbooth in Charlotte creates an amazing experience with props and gives each guests a copy of their fun time in the booth. You'll be amazed at how much fun your guests will have just by taking pictures of themselves (it doesn't take much to entertain them). Escort Cards vs. Place Cards

I am often asked what is the difference between place cards and escort cards. There is a very simple answer to this question.

Escort cards show the name of the wedding guest and the table where they are sitting.

A place card actually is placed at the seat of the individual wedding guest at the table.

Typically you would not have a place card without an escort card unless you are having a small number of guests. Got it?

It makes it easy for your guests when they know exactly where they are sitting. Even though that seating chart is such an enormous task it is necessary to keep your wedding reception organized. Plus you end up with great pictures like the ones above. :)

Your Love, Your Passion

People have often asked me how I got started with wedding planning and I always answer honestly...I just got started. There really wasn't a big thing that happened. There is one thing for sure I did fall in love with and that was planning things. I used to plan everything from parties to church events and my favorite was planning itineraries for vacations. :)

The love for weddings actually came much later after I actually completed my first few weddings. I was in love with the pretty things that went into weddings and the sentimental acts that weddings brought out in people. The creativity it sparked in brides to make their day special.

With the complexity of life I'm getting back to the things I love. It's hard when you own a business, you're always working. Working with the brides you have and then working to get more brides. Instead of constantly being on this treadmill, I am getting back to the love that sparked this passion that developed this company. Working is a lot more fun when you love what you do.

I am so excited to be the host for the Style Plan Workshop, facilitated by none other than The Stylish Planner herself, Jeannie Kennedy. Best Wedding Dress for Your Body Type

During my high school years, there was one show that I watched religiously with my mom every week: Project Runway. Week after week, nothing else seemed to matter during that hour of the show as my mom and I sat spellbound watching these designers make beautiful and unique outfits out of literally garbage sometimes. I believe this is when my artistic and creative side first ignited and I can partially thank Austin Scarlett for this. Austin was a finalist, as well as my favorite designer on the first season. He is most notably remembered for his eccentric personality and for producing a fashionable gown designed entirely out of cornhusks. Today he works for the New York-based bridal-design house Amsale as a Creative Director of its luxury bridal collection. So when asked to research the best wedding dresses for every body type, I obviously consulted his expertise and this is what I came up with:

A-line Dresses:

A-line dresses are fitted around the upper body and flow outward resembling the shape of an A. Scarlet describes a-line wedding dresses as the most flattering of all because they hide flaws and do not require too much excess fabric. If you’re full-figured bride, an a-line dress will help lengthen your body without drawing too much attention to your waistline. Also an empire waist will cover up your waist and hips. For brides with sexy curves, show them off with a modified a-line. A-line dresses are also perfect for petite figures because once again, the style lengthens the body.

Ball Gown Dresses:

A ball gown dress is for those who want to skip the last minute crash diet to squeeze into their dress. This dress compliments small waist lines while hiding those last ten pounds you’ve been meaning to lose. This dress is perfect for pear-shaped brides. Petite brides should stay away from this design because it could make you look “bottom heavy”. You don’t want the dress to look like it’s wearing you instead of the other way around. For those brides that are larger through their hips, Scarlett says a “flat front ball gown” is best. This dress is smooth in the front and fully pleated in the back. For those tall, skinny brides hoping to look like a fairy-tale princess, a ball gown is a perfect match.

Sheath Dresses:

This dress flows from the neckline straight down to the hemline with a very slim shape. Sheath dresses are perfect for both tall and petite brides. This dress is not good for hiding many body flaws. Scarlett suggests soft sheaths for slender figures and constructed sheaths for curvy brides.

Trumpet and Mermaid Dresses:

Trumpet and mermaid wedding dresses are fitted against the body and flare out towards the bottom. These styles are excellent for the confident bride who wants to show off her sexy figure. While this dress is normally worn by slender women with small hips, it’s perfect for any bride who wishes to flaunt her curves.

7 Ways to Make Your Wedding Memorable

You’ve spent a lot of time and money planning your dream wedding, and now your biggest concern is that people remember it. You want your guests commenting to one another that “this is the best reception I’ve ever been to!” All the little details that make your wedding unique and personable will be what guests remember. Here are a few tips to make your wedding reception stand out:

1. Pick a special ceremony start time, like 5:17 - the exact time he proposed to you.

2. Include an "About the Bridal Party" section in your programs or display frames including a picture and a short bio on the reception tables for your guests to learn more about your wedding party. Include jokes or special memories about your friendship.

3. Ask close friends and family members for recommendations of their favorite old/classic drink, new/modern drink, favorite borrowed unique drink recipe, and a blue cocktail. This could be your "Something old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue" menu.

4. What could be more special than writing a thoughtful letter to your mom and dad and laying it on their seats during the reception. The letter could be a simple thank you showing your gratitude for everything they have done for you. Before you even walk down the aisle, your parents will already have tears in their eyes.

5. For an ultra-personal touch to your wedding decor, write down 20 things you love about your soon to be husband, and have him do the same. Type up the sentences and make a "she" and "he" graphic underlay. Then frame and place the completed work on the sign-in table at the reception.

6. After your ceremony, you take your first steps forward as husband and wife; why not celebrate it with a grand exit? At night, sparklers are a popular trend and provide memorable photos. With the right setting, candles can decorate your exit in an unforgettable way. Having a formal ceremony or reception exit is not only fun for you and your guests; it’ll make for great photos. Alternatives to sparklers: paper airplanes, ticker tape, bird seed, and eco-confetti.

7. While taking dance lessons may not be an option for you, the last thing you want is to bore your guests with an uneventful first dance. Not only is purple my absolute favorite color, it is also a very popular color for weddings. Historically, the color purple has been associated with royalty and power. In ancient Rome, purple dyes made from mollusks were so rare only the very rich could afford them. Today, the color shows a bride’s creative, passionate, and romantic side. Purple comes in a wide spectrum of shades, making it ideal for any event. Soft lavender goes perfectly with lighthearted events, and pairing deep purple with blues, smoky grays, or ruby red is ideal for a modern sophisticated look. While creating this inspirational board, I was secretly planning my own wedding in the back of my head!

Autumn Wedding - A Country Affair

Fall is one of the most popular times to plan a wedding. With the leaves changing colors and the perfect temperature weather, it’s no wonder why many brides plan their weddings outside in October. As you all might have read in a recent post, my name is Megan and I am the intern for this summer. For my first blog, I was giving a picture of an orange Izze Clementine Sparkling Juice and told to make an inspiration board out of it. Immediately I thought of an outdoor fall wedding. It would be a low budget, simple wedding with a country theme. Picture the bride wearing cowboy boots and the guests relaxing in their flip-flops. Six Things You Should Know Before Shopping For Wedding Gown

Being a wedding planner that also owns a bridal boutique has its advantages. I get to spend time with brides and chat with them at the beginning of their wedding planning process, which is so exciting. Although, they are at The Bridal House to look at bridal gowns, I almost always put on the wedding plannner hat and chat with them about their weddings and the details. Over the last nine months I have determined that there are six things that brides should know before they begin shopping for their wedding gown. Knowing these six things will make their shopping experience a more fruitful one and one that is more enjoyable. So let's get started.

1. Know Your Budget: One of the questions you'll be asked if you walk into any bridal salon is do you have a budget for your dress. No one wants to fall in love with a dress they can't afford, right? Remember that your budget should include tax and alterations. Alterations are not normally included with the cost of the gown. So keep in mind the total amount when doing your search. It's also a good idea to call around to salons to get a general price range for gowns before you make and appointment or a trip over there.

2. Sizing: This is an extremely important point that you should keep in mind when searching for your dress. Bridal gowns are not sized like clothes you buy from a department store. Meaning, if you wear a size 8 in a dress at Macy's you'll probably wear a size 12 in a wedding gown. So what that means is the dresses are smaller, not that you are bigger. I probably explain this about 15 times on a busy appointment day. Once you select your dress, the consultant will take your measurements and order the dress based on the size chart from the designer. Almost every bridal gown requires alterations, unless the gown was custom made to fit your body. The dress is ordered to fit the largest measurement, so if your belly is larger and your bust and hips are smaller the dress will be ordered to fit your waist and the bust and hips will have to be altered.

3. Timing: You should have your dress ordered no later than six months before your wedding. Unless you are buying a dress from a chain bridal store, most bridal gowns are made upon order. As stated above the majority of bridal gowns will require some sort of nip and tuck once it returns, so you want to allow time for the seamstress to make it fit you perfectly.

4. Do not judge a dress on the hanger: When you begin your search I think it's important to try on different styles. I know you have been looking in magazines and you know that you do not want a strapless dress, but I think you should try it on just to be sure. Often times brides bring in pictures of gowns they like and they try them on and hate them. Also, if you are visiting a reputable bridal salon the consultant should be able to recommend styles based on the description you give them. But when they recommend the dress to you, try it. Remember they have seen the dress on lots of brides, so they know how gorgeous it can look on you.

5. No, you really do not have to bring your entire family: I know, I know on Say Yes to The Dress brides bring everyone from their 3rd cousin to their kindergarten teacher to their appointment. I'm slightly exagerrating, but really an entourage is not necessary. The people that you feel you could not make this decision without are the only ones you should have accompany you. The people you bring with you should be ones who want you to have the dress you want. Not the other way around. Shopping for a bridal gown is an exciting experience, but can be a very stressful one if you have the wrong group with you.

6. Sample sizes: I just thought about this topic and thougth it was worth mentioning. Most bridal salons only carry one sample of a selected style. (Larger stores may carry more than one.) For example, if you are a size 0, more than likely any sample dress you try on is going to be too big for you. Salons do not typically have size 0 samples. Our samples sizes are between size 10-16 mostly, with also some samples over size 20. But salons are prepared for this situation by using tools to size the dress down so you can see what the dress would look like in your size. So if you are a plus size bride, I think it is a good idea to do some research before you go out to salons to be sure they have samples that will fit you. That way you save yourself some time and gas.

This summer is going to be an interesting one with SJB Weddings & Events and The Bridal House in my life. So I am jumping back in and I'm blogging this because I have made a formal commitment to myself to keep this blog updated with fresh content that will assist brides and grooms everywhere as they plan their nuptials! But I'm not doing this on my own, my fabulous intern Megan who has been so wonderful this past month is going to be helping me with the posts. Button Mums: The Not-so-Ordinary Wedding Flower

I initially started this post to talk about this gorgeous clutch and ring pillow covered with mums by Branch Design Studio and captured by Juliet Elizabeth Photography, but I got so inspired by these little flowers. They come in a variety of colors and are plentiful during the fall.
