hey so remember this blog?

it wasn’t really a blog per se, but an assignment for my class. However school is out and i’m reassigning this blog to prolly be my adventures in london writeup… daytime stuff that is…

douche moccasins has the full reign of party life still! but um today i sent off my shit to get a visa so hopefully i’ll fucking get one soon and not be screwed thank the summer jesus, right?

anyway so lake jackson sucks out my soul each and every day, but i’ll prolly waste some time at the mofucking mall and then get drizzunk on ‘special’ punch tonite and then feed ducks, yes? okkk

note: my last sing electrik show of the semester was aight some kid visiting the booth thought the daytrotter session version of “buried” that young coyotes song was ‘rad’

So last weekend I did not have a show. Instead DJ Scatterbrain filled in for me so I could go home for an early birthday celebration. I very much appreciate her covering for me, but let’s just say our music tastes do not, I repeat, DO NOT overlap. Out of the whole show there was maybe one song that I might have played in my lifetime and that was by Final Fantasy who is this awesome Canadian musician. He innovatively plays the violin by using a sync pedal, kind of like Andrew Bird, but he has his own style.

Anyway, I have been ultra busy so I don’t have too much new music saved up for this show. Right now it’s just the leftovers from the last show I did. However if I didn’t like to play the same artist more than once in the same show I TOTALLY would have played more Empire of the Sun remixes. I love love love the ones that have been created from the song “We Are the People.” Every time I think I’ve reached the height of my Australian music obsession it starts building right back up. In fact, Shazam, who did one of those remixes, is from Perth which makes me think that it would really be unfortunate if that whole scene died out before I ever get a chance to make it down under.

Personally I do not own a Flickr account, but I just added a widget that shows the account of the Austinist. It’s pretty cool, because you can scroll through fliers for different shows and events.

endearingly insensitive

There are times that I really love my timeslot, but then there are other times when I really really don’t. It’s way better than having one during the school week and throwing off your sleeping schedule which is what I did for several weeks last semester.

That was a poor choice. The music directors gave me an upgrade after some girl got fired. Originally my show was from 3-5am Sunday mornings. I replaced that girl’s show which was from 2-3am on Tuesdays. Unfortunately I also had an 8am class Tuesday mornings. So then the decision was either to take a nap before my show and then sleep a little after or stay up till the show and sleep a little after. The problem was that often I had a lot of work to do so sleeping didn’t really happen before or after the 3-5am show.

But on the other hand having a show on the weekend is a little lame. You have to leave parties just as they’re getting good. A lot of people are indeed partying meaning less listeners. And you must have a lucid mind when doing a show. Once you learn how to run all the equipment most shows are smooth sailing. However if you are for some reason reacting a bit slower or are more sloppy it can be a disaster. Some of the equipment is really sensitive and the slightest nudge will cause undesirable results.

So anyway I had to rush making the playlist and didn’t feel super confident about it, but it turned out just fine. The first half definitely had more dancey fun songs. I couldn’t help busting a move in the dj booth. If I had a night club, I would probably play 75% of the tracks that are on Sing Electrik.

For my online writing class I have made a wordpress blog. It is about my radio show called Sing Electrik. The show is every Sunday morning from 2 to 3am and I play lots of different kinds of music for it happens to be freeform. At KVRX, the station that I work for, freeform shows have to follow specific guidelines. That would be 2 Texan artists, 5 genres, and 5 songs from the newbin. Because I would rather play music I have found from many sources, I combine all three requirements and play 5 songs that fit the above descriptions.

Wow. That sounded incredibly boring. However my show is very much not. It is primarily electronic dancey tracks with the occasional old punk thrown in. I usually go directly from a party on Saturday night to the station so I end up being a loud know-it-all on my show. My best friend characterized dj shell, which is my radio name, as being a douche. This is definitely up for interpretation.
