But I guess it's not fair to expect the next generation to know who these people are. They'll probably know American Idol's Randy Jackson better than Michael Jackson who is actually the King of Pop! They probably didn't know that the hit series "Charlie's Angels" was set in the 70s. Kinda creepy huh?

I really pity those that don't have an inkling of how famous these people were and still are. But don't worry, there's a lot of their legacy left behind for those who are interested.

Ensembles launched the collection of one of the most loved designers, Debbie Co, in a special intimate, yet widely successful event! This beautiful collection was featured at the newest location of Ensembles, at The Row, Glorietta 5 on Friday, May 15 as a treat for its VIP clients. The guests comprised of Ensembles’ loyal VIP customers, friends from the press and Internet bloggers who enjoyed the cozy evening. Everyone was able to meet and mingle with fashion designer Debbie Co as well as Ensembles’ charismatically funny image model, actress Carmina Villaroel as they savored the yummy snacks.

It was very refreshing to attend an event that was very casual, friendly and warm. Everyone was able to see Debbie’s three-dimensional creation up close as the models sashayed amongst the guests. Debbie and Carmina mixed in with the crowd throughout the evening, to the delight of Ensembles’ VIP customers. It was also very nice to see top fashion bloggers busily taking notes.

The fashion was introduced by the dashing and eloquent Richard Herrera who is an ETC mainstay. The models looked fresh and at the same time modern, elegant and timeless, which Ensembles is known for. Guests had the opportunity to purchase some of their favorite pieces from the collection right there and then with a VIP discount. In addition, door prizes such as Ensembles gift certificates, Debbie Co shrugs and bottles of red wine were raffled off to the delight of the crowd.

She's young, fresh, and beautiful. Everyone wants a piece of her. She's all over the place; on billboards, commercials, gossip and lifestyle mags...EVERYWHERE! The daughter of two of the country's matinee idols, Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion, KC fortunately got the best from both her parents' looks and talent. While at first glance one would say that she's the spitting image of her dad, to a certain degree she got a lot from her mom. For one, her jaw isn't as heavy as her dad's.

But KC is not like Sharon in the sense that she doesn't seem to rush into things---she strikes me as cautious and careful of what she says and does. She appears more mature than her mom was at her age and seems bent on pursuing her studies over her career in showbusiness. Well, only time will tell what the future has in store for this independent minded lady.

Are musicals really back?

Well, I don't know about that...I loved Hugh Jackman in "The Prestige" (I think he's a good actor, very expressive and cute too!) but I don't think I'd watch him in a musical. His singing voice is ordinary, nothing spectacular there. And he doesn't grab me, not like Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly or Donald O'Connors.

I grew up in a household that loved musicals. From Fred and Ginger's postwar movies to Jane Powell's "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" (I know all the songs :) to Julie Andrew's "The Sound of Music" to the rock 'n roll music and dances from "Grease" (I don't count Grease 2, that was just plain awful). Even Olivia Newton-John's "Xanadu" with that dance and song number of hers with Gene Kelly (Don't watch her dance, just listen to her sing, she has a fab voice but can't dance if her life depended on it. Gene Kelly is really great even though he's a lot older here). So I guess I know quite a bit about musicals.

"Mamma Mia" was a success partly because it starred Meryl Streep (you can never go wrong with her) and partly because the songs of Abba are really wonderful. But was it great? Well, it was funny, it was entertaining, but I felt Meryl Streep carried the show single-handedly. Pierce Brosnan's singing was just awful, he looked and sounded like he was constipated. If you compare this musical with the other greats, it looks half-baked and low budget (it just looks it, it can't be low budget with Meryl Streep!).

Are musicals really back? Well, I guess we'll just wait and see shall we?

Katie Holmes: looking older than she really is

She's everywhere. On Oprah, on the cover of magazines, on tv...everywhere...It would seem people can't get enough of the new "Mrs. Cruise". I must confess that the first time I'd seen her was when I watched the movie Batman Returns, and even then I didn't know who she was. I guess this is because she belongs to a younger set.

But you wouldn't know this by just looking at her now. Certainly, Katie Holmes has come a long way since her Dawson's Creek days---you can actually tell when the change began: when she hooked up with heartthrob Tom Cruise. Gone is the young, lively, girly girl look she use to sport in her "First Daughter" years.

Hello "Mrs. Tom Cruise" complete with a more sophisticated and older look. I wonder why? Could it be because she's married to a man a lot older than she is or is it because of her friendship with more mature (older) Victoria Beckham? Or both? Hmmm...

How old do you think this makes her look? Definitely a lot older than her 29 years I can tell you that. Compare her with these two ladies who are about her age, also married, and have had kids...

Jessica Alba, Katie Holmes, Kate Hudson

Jessica's 27, Kate's 29. Could it be the company she keeps that's pressuring her to go for older styles? Does hubby have a hand in her dress choices? hmmmm... Well, she won't be in her 20s forever, but when she does hit her 30s, will she be dressing as though she were in her 40s or 50s? hmmm...

Well, if he is, he has good taste :D And even IF she is dressing too old for her age, she still looks fab and maybe this is just the thing that will set her apart from the rest of the stars.

10 Reasons Why Women are Working from Home

Well, being one myself, I can give a few insights into the matter:

1. More moms want to personally take care of their kids.

It's just a matter of going back to age old family traditions. The mother is the traditional home maker and the father is the bread winner. Since we women had already proven that we're better than men in the workforce, we can now comfortably sit back and revert to tradition.

2. More women want to prove that they can be housewives AND career women.

Multi-tasking is the word. Women can do it, men can't. Enough said.

3. Moms are more paranoid with their kids nowadays.

With all the stuff going around about kids being abused by their nannies, many moms feel that they should personally make sure that THIS does not happen.

4. Women who married their colleagues had to quit their jobs.

This is why office romance is a NO-NO.

5. More companies nowadays are open to telecommuters.

Companies are laying off people but they still need to get the job done. So they get homebased people who will do the same job with no benefits and at a lower rate even though these "workers" need to maintain their workstations themselves. it sucks, I know, but it's still better than nothing...

6. A lot of women are sold to the idea of being "their own boss".

Usually, those women who opt to stay and work at home have reached a high position in their chosen field. They are therefore ready to try being their own boss, start a biz, and dictate their own hours and rules.

7. A lot of moms feel guilty about leaving their kids with caregivers.

Show of hands ladies?

8. From an economic point of view, it's cheaper to stay at home than to commute.

No traffic, no dress code. You can go to work in a tank top and shorts and no one would care. Cool huh?

9. Personal computers have made it easier for people to start a homebased business.

There are a million and one things you can do with your computer. Desktop publishing, multimedia presentations, web design and development, internet marketing, etc.

10. Women can do everything and don't need colleagues to finish a job.

Similar to multi-tasking. I for one work better on my own.

What best defines fashion today? From what I can see, fashion is more kikay now than it had been a decade ago. Slouch is out, fit is in. Since more women today are joining gyms and fitness camps, they'd like to have an avenue for displaying those perfectly toned abs and slim silhouettes.Skirts are fringed, jeans are figure-hugging, tops are one-shouldered or tube tops, accessories are sparkly and ostentatious. In a nutshell, fashion 2009 is feminine and flirty.

You'll never be mistaken for a guy in these get-ups ;)

Prom/Grad Night Teenwear 2009

During my time, a gazillion years ago (tongue in cheek), clothes and hair were reminiscent of the 50s fashion; big hair-sprayed hair, balloon skirts, flat or low heeled shoes. We were influenced by movies like "Teen Witch" and "Say Anything" (so now you know which era I belong to :P).

Last Saturday, I was at Trader's Hotel attending a seminar. As I was waiting for my ride, I whiled away the time observing teenagers in their prom get-up going up the stairs to their function room. It was really fascinating for me to watch how those kids (especially the girls) did their best to emulate HS Musical 3 fashion. Many of these girls were Vanessa Hudgens look-alikes with long wavy hair, flirty skirts, and 2-inch heels.

Since I couldn't very well take pictures of them, I'd have to content myself with providing some looks that inspired the ensembles I witnessed that day:

You see it everywhere...in coffee shops, restaurants...even malls! WiFi or Wireless Internet seems to be everywhere nowadays, probably because of the popularity of the laptop and the subsequent demand for internet access "on the go".

Establishments of all sorts offer FREE WiFi in an attempt to keep customers at their place and buy or order more while they surf and chat to their heart's content. It's really a great marketing strategy and I wonder who first thought of it...

Some complain the service is slow...but who really cares as long as it's free, right?

I’ve just recently traded in my YM for a Digsby and I’m LUVIN’ it! It not only provides IM (instant messaging), but also E-mail notifications (with an “s”—this means I’ll be alerted when ANY of my numerous e-mails receive any messages! Way cool!), AND a link to ALL the most popular social networks such as Facebook, Friendster, etc. How cool is that?

The only drawback is it doesn’t have the conference mode featured in YM…but then again, I rarely use this feature anyway so it all actually works out fine (for me at least :)

10 Things To Do This Summer

Summer is almost upon us. Finals are over and you just want to throw away the books and materials that have been your constant companions since the start of the school year. With all this time on your hands, maybe you should start planning your vacation before you fritter it away...

1. Learn a new skill.

Learn to sew, cook, draw, etc. You're never too old or too young to learn something new. It might even be the start of something big for you one day.

The TRC (Technology Resource Center) has several affordable shortcourses on just about anything.

2. Join a workshop.

Ever wanted to learn how to act, sing, or dance? These are skills that will really come in handy when you go back to school.

Step Dance Studio offers classical and modern ballet classes.

3. Learn a new language.

With the world getting smaller and boundaries changing everyday, a new language will always come in handy. Chinese and the romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian) are particularly popular among language schools.

Alliance Francais de Manille offers French classes for different levels of proficiency, same with the Goethe Institut except they teach German (Warning: the Goethe Institut site is mostly in German so you'd better just visit the place in person if you don't know any German).

4. Go into sports.

Keep yourself trim and fit. Study karate, ballet, gymnastics, swimming, etc. Look great for the next SY ahead ;)

The Milo Sports Clinic has sports scheds every summer. Gymnastics, volleyball, badminton...you name it!

5. Start a project.

Work on something you'd set aside while you were too busy studying. Clean your room, fix your bike and give it a new look, etc.

6. Volunteer for something.

Do your part in community. Join plant-a-tree groups or any other movements in the area. They really need your help.

Haribon is looking for volunteers concerned with the environment. Now this is something really worth your while.

7. Explore the world around you.

Travel and explore. Not necessarily in another country, just your immediate area. You'd be surprised at the places you'll discover in your own backyard. If there are mountains and hills in your area, backpack with friends and commune with nature. Try roughing it for a change.

8. Get a job for the summer.

If your family has a business, tell your parents you want to work there for the summer. Or apply to any of the many establishments that accepts student summer workers. You'll be able to earn your own money and catch a glimpse of how it will be when you graduate.

Fast food chains such as Mcdo and Jollibee are usually open to students looking for summer jobs.

9. Start a small biz.

This may work in conjunction with whatever skills you learn from a seminar. Sell baked goods, t-shirts, etc.

10. Catch up on your reading.

I know, "what? read again? that's what i've been doin' the whole year!". I'm talking about the classics, the kind of stuff not in the recommended reading list but will still improve your mind. Try it. I'd spent some of my best summers with my nose in a book.

So you see, there are more and better ways to spend your summer than just watch tv, play computer games, or just hang around with friends. Make the most of the time you have this summer. Remember, when you join the workforce, there's no such thing as a "summer break".

I know WAHM is the accepted accronym for WORK-AT(FROM)-HOME-MOM but I feel that maybe we should spice it up a bit---make it a bit more out there, if you know what I mean :D

So I've come up with my own version of the WAHM that's just a bit longer and yet more in-keeping (at least I think so) with today's internet savvy Moms:

Laptop Fashion Skin Deep

As soon as I saw them online, I knew I wanted one. My laptop is brand new but the artist in me wanted more than funereal black. I wanted color, I wanted style. So I surfed around and checked out what the net had to offer.

Unfortunately, the cheapest I could find cost P500. But it was Really Nice! It was by ProudSKIN.
Even though I practically drooled over the designs on their site, I still felt P500 was more than I was willing to pay for a laptop cosmetic. So I decided to do my shopping on foot. And guess what I found?
I found this at CDR-King in Megamall. How much? Only P150! So you see, it does pay to shop around :) And there were so many designs to choose from. I got this one for my sister.
I'm not sure about durability or it being made out of vinyl, but I can tell you for sure that it's water and rubbing alcohol proof (I checked). I might still get my dream skin from ProudSKIN one of these days, but even if I don't, the one I have right now is good enough for me :)

Top 10 Summer Wear for the Not-So-Thin

Summer's here. And unlike the more temperate countries, Philippine climate tends to go from cool to hot (e.g. Christmas season is cool, Lenten season is HOT though there are just 2 months difference between the two seasons). So we women are once again faced with the age old dilemma ALL women obsess over, "What shall I wear?!".

Now I know all you slim and trim ladies out there have no problem with this issue. Fashion designers make clothes for your body type. But what about US? The plus-sizers? Are we doomed to wear tees and jeans in this chaffing heat?

Googling around, I found some looks we girls of the plus size category can look good in and still look tres chic.

Fashion gurus preach that Plus-size women should wear clothes that accentuate their curves..huh?! Aren't we suppose to hide those unsightly bulges? Wait! the sentence is incomplete...Plus-size women should wear clothes that accentuate their curves flatteringly. Ohhh...

Sassy Sassa Summerwear 2009

The invitation said "Summer Cocktail Chic" and the first thing that came to mind was, "What the heck do you wear that's summery yet chic?". Well, knowing the event was going to be the launching of Sassa's 2009 Summer Collection, I knew I had to wear more than my usual slacks and tees. So I dug into my wardrobe (and that of my sister's and mom's---hehehe!) and came up with an ensemble that would pass muster---I hoped :)

Upon arriving at the show's venue, the yet to be open to the public Aquaknox (coming soon), I saw immediately that what I was wearing was just right for the stylish settings. True, there were those who came in traditional slacks and tees, but there were a few who followed the instructions in the invitation and dressed appropriately like my two new friends here. My ever reliable hubby, the love of my life (naks!) escorted me to the affair and looked so handsome!

But enough about me...we're here to talk about SASSA!

In preparation for this show, I googled SASSA on the net (I'm like that when I'm not too familiar with a product) and found out that it was a sort of sub product of Barbizon (you know, the makers of intimate apparel?). They have this page where they showcase their products at http://www.sassa.com.ph/. So I checked them out and thought I knew what to expect at the show.

Boy, was I wrong! The stuff on the site right now were not their latest styles. They were probably last season or something 'cause when the ladies started walking down the aisle, I let out a covetuous "oooohhh...". They were not at all what I expected! Check these out:

AND, dig this: All Condition Gear Philippines, Inc. supplied the colorful Crocs footwear the models wore at the Sassa Summer Collection 2009 Unveiling.

Crocs are well known for their signature style shoes for both kids and adults but they also have a whole lot of extremely comfortable slippers that go well with swim wear.

Some of the notable styles during the fashion show were the sexy wedges, Cyprus, described as “fashion fused with comfort” on the Crocs website.

The bronze and bright pink colors looked so very hot matched with Sassa’s swimsuits. Also worth mentioning were the Capri Canvas models that simply screamed “Summer!”

Crocs are available in stores all around the Metro. Crocs manufacturers are committed to making lightweight, comfortable, slip-resistant, fashionable and functional shoes that are not only ultra fashionable (as we witnessed first hand during the show) but are also very comfortable!

Overall, I’d say the evening was a success. Nobody was breathing while the models made their way around the room, everyone was so intent to get a good look at this offering from SASSA. I think the best part about the designs are they’re actually wearable! To prove it, SASSA gave all of us (only girls ofcourse! lol!) a suit to bing home and try on. While you WILL NEVER see me posting my picture wearing one on this blog, I can assure you it looks good!

To give you an idea of how affordable these suits are, they are available at The Landmark Makati and Trinoma, Robinson’s Department Stores, SM Hypermarts, Metro Market Market, and many more. Now everyone knows these establishments are known for affordable shopping and SASSA has made sure that their products are reasonably priced yet stylish. So it seems there is a way to look good this summer WITHOUT breaking the bank! Now that’s great news :)
