Thanks to zeroinfluence and his excellent blog for “lending” this image

Never stop absorbing new informations. Twitter is the embodiment of this motto, a self marketing toolI’ve been speaking about in the past. I find it very useful to discover things on the net that I’d never be able to find out myself. I’m currently following a lot of designers and no day has passed without some new trick coming out of their hat or some new features / upgrades that were made available for my favourite apps. It’s quite useful, very simple to use and you won’t lose as much time as let’s say Facebook and the subsequent trashing of stupid notification emails of all kinds. If you decide to dump facebook because of this or the recent changes in their TOC and policy, and you decide to embrace twitter…I’m with you

Today I want to show you how to develop and maximise your potential on Twitter with some unique tools, some of which are just fancy while the others are very useful. But before diving into the topic let’s cover the basics for those among you that aren’t avid tweeters already.

How and why you should use twitter

Twitter enables its users to post updates about their status, what they’re doing, questions, answers and so on. The system limits your tweets (i.e.: the updates) to a length limit of 140 characters, as this is the maximum size of sms notification.

With twitter you just have text and that’s all you need, simple right?

Keeping the service uncomplicated is one of twitter strongest points.

Twitter mechanics are very simple, every other user on the network can be categorized as belonging to one of these groups:

Users you follow

Users that are following you

All other users

When you decide to follow somebody on twitter you’ll just start receiving his/her status updates.

Anybody who’s following you will receive your updates and so on.

There’s no obligation, when you follow somebody, that he or she has to follow you as well. You just have a limit to the maximum number of people you can follow, which I think of as a measure to keep performance acceptable. There are no limits imposed on the amount of people that can follow you. You can post your tweets as replies to other tweets and users and it’s pretty much like your typical instant messaging tool without real time.

This is pretty much all I can say about the service from a formal perspective. So, what about content? how should you use twitter?

I think the ultimate goal here is to publicize yourself. Use it as a showcase of your latest works or activities, build up on your followers to make a deeper impact and reach a bigger audience for your product or work. At least this is my perspective ’cause under this light twitter can be a very effective tool.

First of all, let’s talk about how NOT to use twitter.

Many first timers here think about microblogging the wrong way, here’s a typical twitter stream:

Simmessa: Woke up early
Simmessa: going for a coffee, it’s friday thanks god!
Simmessa: traffic jammed on his way to work
Simmessa: …more crap

Rule number one for a good twitter use: don’t write updates about stuff EVEN you don’t give a cr@p about!

Have you seen much people out there doing a blog post on their typical morning? Of course there are,and there can be exceptions but the fact that updates are smaller doesn’t mean they have to be insignificant!

Here’s a more proper twitter stream:

Simmessa: checking out the latest Heroes episode, things get creepy with that Sylar guy…
Simmessa: anybody there listening to Billy Talent?I just found out some worthy rarities.
Simmessa:Just gave the finishing touch to my online web design portfolio.
Simmessa: going out for mexican food, anything worthy it around Milan?
Simmessa: got google latitude on my phone, smoking hot!
Simmessa: Debian 5.0 (codename Lenny) is out! Grab the x86 dvd torrent

and so on…

look at the way updates pose more interaction to other users, you don’t have to limit yourself to status updates, you post your discoveries, questions, you conversate with other users and so on.

A typical reply to one of my latest tweets would be:

Jeremy: @simmessa check out the Mexicali in via Valtellina, it’s very good and the price’s just right.

Don’t use twitter for meaningless stuff, nobody cares about that… This simple concept is something most newbies do not seem to get right, not before their 100th tweet at least.

Rule number 2: follow the right people, follow as many as you can

Another good thing that will help you get ‘into’ twitter is to find the right people to follow. I’m mostly interested to web design, technology, photography and music. I have found some relevant people to follow, people that share my interests. There are lists out there of people that are ‘hot’ on twitter, BarackObama has nearly 2 milions followers…he’s the most popolar guy on twitter, but I’m not following him cause I’m not very interested right now. There’s a very useful top 100 with the most popular twitter users, you should start with that to decide who’s worth following. But if you’re looking for ways to have lots of followers, beware! going above 1000 followers is pretty though stuff! A good rule of thumb when looking for interesting users to follow is to check who is interesting for the users you follow! Otherwise check out these lists:

List of bands and musicians on twitter
List of celebrities on twitter
List of designers on twitter

Twitter tools: beyond the basics

What’s curious in the twitter world is that, in contrast to the other services out there (facebook in primis) everything has been stripped down to the bare status updates thing. If you want to extend twitter functionalities you’d have to rely on the useful APIs that the kind developers made available to the world.

Of course nowadays being open brings much fruit. That’s why you’ll find hundreds of services that have been built on top of the twitter APIs together with some clever hacks. Those services range from the demential, anything but useful to the imprescindible, with a lot of great stuff in between. I’ll try to make a roundup of the most useful ones in the next part of this article: Twitter tools and tricks of the trade.

I’m by no ways an expert in the topic of music promotion and I’m just writing this to relate my experience with online music promotion on music networks. I’m writing new stuff as I figure out things about the dark ways the internet could help you publicize your music online and, as I previously stated, I think the most innovative music social network out there is last.fm. I therefore apologize with the casual reader if I focus so much on last.fm to even consider doing a single, lengthy post on the subject…please forgive me, I’m pretty sure I’ll be just scratching the surface of such a huge topic, so please bear with me if I indulge too long. Last.fm rocks. Period.

The first thing you should do when you start promoting your music on last.fm is to create an artist page where you’ll put up all the relevant informations. The process is pretty straightforward so I’m not gonna explain much about it. The last.fm docs explain all the steps pretty well. The second most important thing you should do is to make sure all of your own mp3 are correctly tagged. Last.fm will use your tag to determine how many listeners your music gets. Listeners are the basic fuel of your car in music promotion,so you’re gonna be wanting loads of’em later on. It’s very important to tag your music in a consistent way before releasing it, you don’t want to make a mess or any omissions,so please include the artist name, album title, year of publication, copyright informations, you could even add a contact if u like, please don’t skip on the basics or your later efforts will be completely wasted.

I assume you already have a last.fm account, make sure you installed the plugin and you’re sending data on your plays to the net already. I made mine way before putting out my music on the net and I even used a different nickname back then. That raises a legit question: Would it be ok if you chose a last.fm nickname which is the same as your artist name? Well it depends…for small, unknown artists promoting their music via their own account it could look a little bit too much like “begging for attention” and I suggest you avoid it. For large bands I guess it would be rather fake looking, so don’t play in Metallica and make a jamesHetfield account or nobody will take u seriously a “MetallicaFan” nick would make it a lot more believable…but I guess this won’t be a big problem for maybe 99.9% of us, right ? For medium, lesser known artists it could work out a lot better if you promote your stuff with your account, and this has been used on a larger degree on myspace to generate interest and visits (look who’s on my friend list, Trent Reznor from NiN!) and it’s a proven gimmick.

Now that we’re done with the basic stuff let’s see what’s to be done to gain some fame…

Get new friends

Last.fm offers you a handful of options to scavenge your other online services (such as gmail) in search of other people that have a last.fm account. You should use them all to build up a strong network as soon as possible,I skipped on this at first and had quite a hard time making new friends in my first months there, so don’t repeat my mistake. As you play more music on your clients (pc, mac, linux, whatever) your profile will eventually build up with a series of suggestions and musical neighbours that are gonna be useful to broadcast your music all over the place. I’m able to listen to music @work, and got my last.fm plugin there,I own a living room media player that’s internet enabled (the mighty xbmc), so that’s also on the list of my last.fm clients, good stuff, I even found a way to scrobble (notify last.fm of my plays, that is) after listening tracks on my Mobile mp3 player, but that never worked too well for me,just try it out if you have the chance. When you will have built a musical network of neighbours and friends it will be a good time to move on for something thicker.

Make a group

You are an artist, you’re participating in the royalties program (more on that later), you have stats, listeners and friends, it’s now about time you start a group about yourself for promotion purposes. A group will make it possible to assemble crowds and target your committed fans with exclusive news and selective emails. But last.fm will purge groups if they’re less than 3 members, so you’d better have some friends in your group to boot or you might risk disintegration! Your next goal is to make as many people on last.fm join your group, and that’s not easy…

The gentle art of shouting ?!?

Whenever you feel like you’re being social enough on last.fm it’s time to fish for new fans…and btw the friend network you’ve been developing is the best net u could wish for! Here’s how I do it.

First of all check the artists last.fm has tagged as similar to the artist u want to promote, go visit their pages, chances are that some of their listeners will enjoy your music as well. This is no exact math by the way, but you can place a shout or two on those pages and look for the fans reactions, this will get you some fresh listeners if you carefully repeat over time. Please don’t be a jerk on your shouts (last.fm lingo for messages on a board, how rude ) and please respect everybody and their opinions when pushing your music.

Here’s a couple of examples:

Wrong: Are you still listening to Artist X puny shit? You check out Super Artist Me NOW and I’ll pretend you don’t deserve a bloody death by my hands…

Correct: Hey guys, Artist X is way cool, make sure you check out http://last.fm/music/ArtistMe as well. You may be surprised! Bye!

As you can see it’s possible (and a smart thing to do) to add links to your shouts, please do so! I also suggest you keep doing this until you have all of your highly similar artists covered.

After that it’s time to visit your neighbours on last.fm and tell them about your common taste and how you think they should “check out ArtistMe and be happy”.

There are additional ways you could relate to your next fans, shouting on an artist page is something, shouting on a user profile is a little more confidential, while sending direct messages will help you achieve even more musical closeness. I ALWAYS take time to thank all the users that I’ve been able to track as listeners of my music via shouts on their user pages. I show’em some respect ’cause they took some of their precious time to try my music out. I don’t get personal at all unless I know them already from other places or in person. A word of warning: some users may be bothered if you get too close without them even knowing you, be polite and don’t take too many liberties or You’ll only achieve ill effects.

Please keep in mind at all times that yours is just a musical advice, you don’t wanna force/annoy anybody and of course when somebody happens to argument or even yell at you, keep it low profile and don’t be rude to anybody, that’s all I can say.

Remember to periodically check your artist account to see who’s listening, the listeners’page contains the most important informations to help you tell who’s just casually checking you out (recent listeners, usually)from who’s really into your stuff (top listeners). The page gets update every couple of days (hopefully more often in future). It’s precious information and you don’t wanna waste it. More of this stuff can be gathered via the last.fm Music Manager, which is your artist control panel. I rarely bother with that, as I don’t need statistical informations at the moment, I just wanna track my listeners and know the most about them (each one of them!) so to make’em happy with more good stuff. Your mileage may vary, and I’m pretty much finished now. I’m always out there looking for new fans or friends so please drop by and say hello! Good luck on your online music promotion “quest” and stay tuned for the next part of this guide…

For those of you that love fast paced action movies I’ve got good news: Crank 2 is out this April! (in the United Kingdom, I presume)

The Original Crank was great in my opinion, it’s the closest you can get to a Grand Theft Auto videogame transposition to the Big screen. The sequel might be even funnier, given that the original cast has been involved (most notably Jason Statham and Amy Smart) and from what I have seen in the trailer, the style of direction (by mostly unknown to the masses directors/writers: Mark Neveldine/Brian Taylor) looks very similar to the prequel, or even more frantic (if humanly possible ). I’m happy to wait for this one to come out in some file sharing site, err…sorry I meant Movie Theather ;). I suggest you keep an eye open for this movie in 2009.

All the Best!

I’ve got fresh news for the ones among you using Twitter (don’t you know what twitter is? check it out here). Until now I’ve been using the Twitter website to make my updates or sometimes the useful twitter gadget on gmail ’cause I didn’t really need anything else plus I’m keeping many browsers open all day long and that felt natural to me. Well all this up to now, I’ve been searching for better alternatives out there and stumbled upon this top5 by DailyApps. Spaz blew me out! It’s an Adobe Air application so that will maybe make you feel a little dizzy until you figure out how to add air to your arsenal of web browser plugins. The one shot install works in less than 1 minute and the app is truly well made and has all the feature you’ll ever ask to a twitter client, unless you would like to send files to your twitter “contacts” (a soon to be added feature I hope).

Check it out, and, by the way:

Dump Facebook

Now more than ever…

All the Best!

Simmessa.

*UPDATE*

It looks like SPAZ users are having some kind of issues with the way Twitter is limiting API queries to the service, I guess it isn’t a specific SPAZ problem but it’s due to the huge popularity Twitter is getting since the latest Mac Kenote… head here for more info

I’ve been looking for a fancy ajax file manager for quite some time now, but it’s been hard so far to get a free viable alternative to plain old ftp. C’mon guys I think it could be a good time to come up with something better than the File Transfer Protocol, with all its quirks and odd behaviours. But you’ll all realize this has been the dawn of a new era: everybody’s using rapidshare these days, or one of its very good alternatives (Megaupload, 4shared and filefactory, to name a few). I think an ajax file manager would be a nice addiction to those of you guys owning personal servers and not willing to share their private files with the world.

Enters Relay.

Relay is a wonderful piece of ajax code written with the aid of the prototype ajax toolkit.

Relay is still in beta, but it does a wonderful job of uploading / downloading and managing files on your private server, let’s check out some of its features:

drag-n-drop files and folders

dynamic loading file structure

upload progress bar

thumbnail view, including pdf

multiple users & accounts

And I can tell you everything works smoothly for a beta, and it’s very usable too.

Wanna try out a live demo?

check it out here

Are you a self produced musician or band? Then you could find the following post interesting…

I recently began doing my own music and putting it for free on the internet, which is something I really wanted to do for a long time. I’ve undertaken this project, my solo record, and I put so much time and effort in it ’cause I wanted it t be a work of labor and love.

By the way there are many things I got wrong, my personal philosophy was 100% DIY, and I’ve had to learn quite a lot of things to make my music sound the way I wanted to…

Quite a painful experience if you ask me, but also a good opportunity to learn many good things about music production.

So you now have your brave mp3s on a pc, you burn CDs for your friends, and maybe in you even prepared a page, or a website dedicated to your project.

But when does everybody notice you? in other words: How do you get seen? On the internet there’s virtual space for everybody, but that doesn’t mean quality space. What if you get stuck inside a narrow, lone alley all by yourself? that won’t make you know any new people right?

Being there is actually quite different from getting new people to listen to your music!!

That’s why we need to introduce the next step: getting social!

There are many social music networks out there, some are good, some are bad, what’s to choose? I say, you’ve gotta catch’em all (no Pokemon pun intended).

At least that’s what I did, here’s a list of music social networks where I made my music available:

1- Myspace
2- Last.fm
3- Imeem
4- Soundclick
5- Sonichall
6- Mp3.com
7- Jamendo
8- iJigg

So let’s go through each one to find out what’s good and what’s bad for you.

Myspace:

Myspace is a place for friends…that’s what they all say, but I consider it more of a place for musicians (or musicians wannabe / posers, sometimes). One of the first and most extensive networks out there, I’ve seen friends receiving concert booking from people never seen before on myspace…but that usually doesn’t happen so often… On the other hand I know of a few pros doing PR work in myspace but that doesn’t seem to produce much in terms of “monetary gain”.

I guess you could consider it a good place to connect to fellow bands or players or even fans, but I found it totally lacking in certain aspects. Who’s been listening to your music? it’s pretty hard to say, the guys @ myspace don’t really wanna help you with that, wanna get some royalties from them for streaming your music? You’d better get lost…cause that’s not gonna happen (they might consider it on an individual basis, since they’re making money from ads, but it’s just my view on the subject, please don’t take my word for it).

By any ways I am no myspace expert and I’d like to hear from you guys if those things can be done. Drop your 2 cents in the comment box will ya?

Last.fm:

Last.fm is the best music network out there. period.

I’ve been a fan of these guys for a long time, myself being a user since 2005 when the whole thing was still called audioscrobbler.

How does it work? You just install their plugin on your computing devices, then whenever you play a song (winamp, iTunes, whatever) you send them a notification. This builds up to your last.fm profile over time, so that they find out about your taste (or lack of!) in music and soon enought they start proposing you music that you’ve never heard based on the fact that many other listeners out there share your likes or dislikes.

Very smart stuff right? but that’s for listeners, and we’re music producers, so what’s in it for us?

Last.fm has developed much since the audioscrobbler days and now they offer many new services to artists and labels alike. You can now upload your own music and make it available for streaming or download, but what’s the catch? Since a couple of months they have a royalties program: in short they offer to pay you for streaming or listening of your music on their network, it’s just too good to be true, isn’t it? get many listeners and you will get more money in royalties. You could simply cash in or decide to spend your money on last.fm other services, wanna get more “airtime”? buy some “powerplays” and you’ll get more plays on their network, maybe some more suggestions and so on…or you could just buy some old fashioned advertising on last.fm, it’s up to you.

They also have some pretty serious stats to help you understand who’s playing your music, when and which songs get the most play… wonderful!

Last.fm as I see it could really shape the future of music distribution, so stay tuned and subscribe now!

my nickname is jensung so add me to your friends when you join.

END OF PART 1

…check this blog soon and often for part 2 of this post…we’ll discuss some lesser known service like Soundclick, Imeem, Sonichall (beta), Mp3.com, Jamendo and iJigg…

All the Best!

è sul mio disco: “The Way of Opening”, scaricatela, ascoltatela, poi mi dite…

All the Best!
