These boots have a hidden zipper so you don’t actually have to lace up the backs. It’s a cool design to update a classic boot. Perfect for girls who have to run around town but still want to look luxe and put-together.

This season the pin heel was everywhere, and was a major trend covered by designers across the board. These are a great option in a classic shape and color. They are so wearable and totally not what you think of when you hear “spiked metal stiletto.”

I love the mix of diamantés and tough silver chains—sort of a mess of fabulousness. It’s great for holiday dressing. Whether it’s a little black dress for the office or a special occasion, you can wear this cuff to spice up any basic.

It’s a cool ring that gives any outfit a sexy edge. It caught my eye at the presentation, and I immediately had to try it on. It’s so unique.

9. TOM BINNS Tough Chic Zipper Earrings
These were my choice for our annual editor’s picks issue of Elle. Tom Binns has the unique ability to take something familiar and make it new and special.

10. Kenneth Jay Lane Large Link Bracelet

The tux. Le smoking. We’ve seen variations of it on and off the runway for decades. The tried-and-true alternative to the party frock is showing itself in fresh ways this holiday season. Day or night, casual or dressy, suiting elements are so right now.

A few of my favorite tuxedo-inspired picks and how to wear them:

1. Rag & Bone Tuxedo Dress This frock is a perfect way to dress up downtown. Booties keep it feeling fashion-forward and a little edgy.

I’ve had a bit of a girl crush on Miss Deschanel ever since I saw her in Almost Famous and, full disclosure of nerdiness, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. And I swooned over every last ’50s-inspired outfit she wore in (500) Days of Summer, an aesthetic that mirrors her personal style. I have very little hope of pulling off her throwback look with equal panache, but I will shamelessly steal a fraction of her style with the Oliver Peoples sunnies.

Designed with a one-of-a-kind breath logo (a puff of warm air on the right lens makes it appear) in the shape of a lipstick smooch and packaged with a cocktail-napkin cleaning cloth, there’s an undeniable playfulness to this pair. Add to that Oliver Peoples’ classy, subtle branding and impeccable quality, and these will surely be the most-worn piece in my sunglass wardrobe.

Baklava breaks, camping trips on the beach, chats on Skype with Italian manufacturers: LD Tuttle designer Tiffany Tuttle makes the life of an L.A. designer sound tough to beat. She shares studio and showroom space with two other designers and collaborators to counter the isolation of L.A.’s urban sprawl, but her experience extends beyond the Pacific coast: she worked at Givenchy in Paris, designed for Rebecca Taylor in N.Y.C., and studied shoemaking in Milan. This pedigree offers a European flair that has made other designers take notice: LD Tuttle shoes were spotted on the Erin Wasson X RVCA and VPL spring runways.

Suzanne: This video is a first for Shopbop—not just a trend or denim fit guide, but a cool mini-movie complete with a soundtrack. Tell me about the Fly By Night concept and how the collaboration with Pencey and Siwy came about.

Kate: Our goal was to provide our customers with a scenario they could relate to—multiple girls deciding what to wear followed by a night out in NYC, which is not complete without a run-in with an unrelenting bouncer and live music, things my friends and I regularly experience.

We were going for a fun/playful vibe based on an indie rock soundtrack and a Lower East Side setting. I wanted to bring on designers whose aesthetics mixed exceptional eye-catching pieces with low-key, casual looks, and also worked well when styled together. Pencey’s holiday collection immediately came to mind. Styles include this season’s sought after faux fur leopard coat, a flirty ruffle dress in a vibrant animal print, and cool subtle styles: black lace leggings, drapey blazers, and awesome graphic tees. We wanted a denim line to complement Pencey’s collection. Cut to Siwy’s holiday line, which has everything from your basic dark-wash, everyday denim to red sequined skinnies. Christina Minasian (Pencey’s Creative Director) and I put together multiple looks for the girls to try on, as well as their ultimate hit-the-street ensembles.

S: The video features It girls Poppy Delevingne and Isabelle McNally, Piano’s bar, and a few irresistibly cute NYC boys. Tell me about the locations and how you chose the cast.

K: We wanted to feature girls with a great fashion sense who had different looks, and settled on these personalities—a blonde and a brunette, a long and lean frame and a cute, petite figure. Piano’s is the perfect destination in a great area in NYC. It has a chill bar in front and an upbeat music room that blares rock and roll in the back. I frequent this spot myself; it’s always a great time and boasts an impressive up-and-coming indie-rock lineup.

S: Despite the talent, this video’s real star has gotta be those rock-star red sequined Siwy leggings! At first they seem a bit intimidating, but Poppy makes them look so cool and wearable. What’s your advice for styling them?

K: The red sequin leggings provide killer fashion that can be overwhelming if not toned down a bit. We thought the faded black vintage-esque Pencey tee and sophisticated black blazer were on-point with the screaming leggings. The glimmering silver chain necklace pulls the top and bottom together and looks perfect on Poppy because of her natural, not-much-makeup-needed beauty and her girly platinum hair.

S: Will there be more videos like this, a part two perhaps?

K: Definitely! Please stay tuned, we have some wild things in the works.

S: And finally, when you’re going out with your girls to watch a live band on the LES, what are you wearing?

K: I am a boot fanatic and flat boots are a must when standing on your feet and enjoying music. Lately I have been wearing my go-to Golden Goose boots with cool sheer patterned tights, a T-shirt dress, and a leather jacket. Lots of chunky rings and necklaces are my favorite night-out accessories.

Last Days of Disco

Kate’s Inspiration: A Studio 54 story first entered my head in our holiday appointment at the Elizabeth and James showroom. The Cyber Swirl print in the Japonais Shift Dress caught my eye—the print’s pastel palette was so different from the other dresses we saw for the holiday seasons. This piece served as the base for the theme, and I was pleased to see ’70s-inspired slinky jumpsuits, vibrant sequins, and gold lamé show up in the market appointments. I also really wanted to incorporate a new spin on leopard, and Pencey’s colorful Ruffle Dress provided the perfect look.

It’s bold party style with a point of view, and not your typical statement-necklace-and-LBD that traditionally dominates the next few weeks. Think Bianca Jagger, Cher, and Twiggy when you're dressing to hit the dance floor.

Morgan’s Style Tips: The disco look can easily end up looking costume-y, but when it works, it WORKS! Start with one retro-inspired piece and give it the spotlight—the key is to let that single piece be what makes the look “disco.” Pair it with minimal, yet bold accessories: one big cocktail ring, an understated clutch, and modern platforms. As with every trend, it only works when it’s natural, so less is more here.

Kate’s Inspiration: Feminine takes on plaid at LaROK and Rebecca Taylor (warm pink, blue, and purple patterns) led to our lumberjack-with-a-softer-side story. We wanted to offer a sexy, girly take on this man-inspired look. Cargo pants, denim overalls, A Common Thread’s studded army jacket with faux fur, and our Bop Basics trapper hat worked in seamlessly. Theory’s outdoor scene-printed sweater styled over a thermal onesie embodies cabin fever attire.

Morgan’s Style Tips: The play between masculine and feminine here is what makes this look so effortless. Incorporate pastels, lace, or a black bra to offset the heavy workwear and knits. Keep it cozy with layers: knit tights, faux fur, wool, and flat boots. I love the look of the strapless plaid LaROK dress with the army parka and over-the-knee boots, and the wool shorts with the lace and pastel plaid blouse (pictured)—warm, chic, and sexy!
 
Jewel Tones

Kate’s Inspiration: There's nothing I don’t love about the ’80s party dress created for us by Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent (pictured). The feminine floral print, ruffles, and bustier silhouette work together to make the perfect little party dress. More importantly, the color is striking. Jewel shades were sprinkled throughout so many designers’ holiday collections. We were very taken with the sapphire and periwinkle shades this season, and I felt it was important for us to highlight these standout pieces.

Morgan’s Style Tips: Jewel tones are a perennial favorite this time of year, but the fresh twist is in the details: ruffles, sheer panels, draping, and teeny floral prints. I LOVE the Twelfth Street dress, and because it’s subtle yet striking, it works so well with dot tights and subtle black booties. A neutral faux fur coat would look hot with this dress, too, but if you take that route, go with bare legs. These colors are done in such rich fabrics, so don't be afraid to make them super sophisticated. Tuck a blouse into high-waisted trousers or a slim pencil skirt. Stick to black and silver accents to keep it looking forward.

City Lights

Kate’s Inspiration: Sequin harem pants and tuxedo blazers feel like a reinvented twist on chic evening basics for this season. Diane von Furstenberg’s holiday collection was one of my favorites, particularly her tuxedo blazer (pictured) and sexy slouchy sequined sweats. Ivory was such a breath of fresh air in contrast to all the black and grey out there, and we chose this as the primary color in this story. I love Foley + Corinna’s ruffle bolero, which creates a dramatic shoulder, and we particularly loved pairing black and navy.

Morgan’s Style Tips: A cream blazer is so stunning and, paired with black sequined pants, steals the show. Keep the accessories simple and in a neutral color palette to pull off this look. The statement is made in the silhouettes and fabrics, and the range of colors (navy, black, champagne, cream) says classic glamour, so leave the bold-colored accessories at home.
 
Top Coat

Kate’s Inspiration: This season’s outerwear is phenomenal, and I fell in love with See By Chloé’s grey and black oversized, fuzzy animal-print coat—such a cool piece. We wanted to show the range of outerwear available this season, including Derek Lam’s gorgeous oatmeal cape, the coveted faux fur leopard style, and the camel coat.

Morgan’s Style Tips: Statement coats are so versatile—they can be dressed up or down. Wear them with jeans and a chunky sweater, or with dress pants or a skirt. Don’t be afraid to buy a winter coat that has a print or a unique silhouette; I promise it will fit into your wardrobe better than you think.

I’m not going to lie to you: pants with allover sequins are, in the words of the venerable Tim Gunn, “a lot of look.” The key to pulling them off is to think of them as exceptionally shiny skinny jeans, or an amped-up version of latex leggings, and go from there. Styling these silver Alice + Olivia numbers with a Theory blazer, a vintage concert tee, and Alexander Wang choked pumps makes the look more downtown rocker, less roller disco.

Be warned: it’s a bit of a letdown to go back to leggings crafted from non-reflective materials after a night in these. Which has me wondering: Could I get away with a black sequined pair for day if I wore it with a sweater coat and booties? (See Amie’s post for more tips on how to wear sequins for day.)

Taking my styling cues from the lucky ladies Bill singled out with his lens, I’m layering Rebecca Taylor’s faux fur vest over a sweet print dress, and pairing a big, blanket-y, knit shawl-style piece (the one above is from Shopbop newcomer Falls knitwear) with a jersey maxi dress and loads of jewelry for a sort of haute elementary school art teacher look.

And for the ultimate in nouveau Anita Pallenberg style, I turn to this major Mongolian lambswool number (above left) from Haute Hippie. An investment? Sure. But a justified one in my book. Just imagine what a signature piece like this could do for otherwise pedestrian basics (Sale leggings? I’m talking to you.), or what a worthy partner it make for a silk jumpsuit.

A brown leather bomber jacket—masculine-tough yet buttery soft. A billowing silk scarf. Sunrays dancing off the gold wire frame of a pair of aviators. There’s always been something thrilling and romantic about a pilot’s style, an image filched from the boys and ushered into the armoires of intrepid females thanks to the queen of the air herself, Amelia Earhart.

Hillary Swank’s portrayal of the flying ace has the blogosphere buzzing about feminism (in addition to groundbreaking flights, Earhart famously penned a missive to her husband-to-be eschewing any “medieval code of faithfulness”) and aviatrix fashion. Earhart popularized the women’s bomber (a jacket she sometimes slept in to emulate the broken-in, experienced look of her male counterparts), tweed menswear trousers, shag haircuts, and an anything-he-can-do-I can-do-better mentality—all ideas that were both ahead of their time and timeless.

Seventy years later, her look has caused a sensation on another kind of runway, as designers style traditional aviation gear with more provocative pieces: a fitted leather jacket over a mini dress or floor-grazing silk gown, earflap caps with sweatshirt dresses and sky-high booties, and dramatic faux fur vests that propel updated aviator shades to another level.

Fashion deep-thought du jour: Evolving your personal style means heeding your inner directive, even if (especially if) it’s leading toward something that seems completely out of synch with what you usually wear. Case in point: the white dress. Like most women who talk/write/think about clothes all day, I have a closet dominated by shades of black, nonetheless, an eggshell vintage sundress was the runaway hit of my summer wardrobe. It had that WASP-bohemian/Gwyneth Paltrow/Montauk vibe—lovely, but definitely not my go-to look. Still, as is so often the case in matters of the heart, I couldn’t deny how it made me feel: breezy, happy in that unfettered way cerebral, obsessive types rarely experience. I found myself reaching for it at least once a week.

So began my love affair with the Little White Dress. Since it’s well past sundress season, I’ve moved on to ivory evening looks, screening candidates for holiday parties. I fell for the Alexander Wang and the Thakoon at NYFW last February, and the metallic embroidery on this off-off-white IRO dress gives it that off-kilter glamour I can’t get enough of. (Have you heard of IRO? It’s this great French line that seems to fly just under the radar.)

But as we all know, the actual piece is but a small part of the equation. How you style something is what makes it personal. I’d add my signature by wearing these white numbers with a boyfriend blazer (with the sleeves pushed up), black Falke tights, and Elizabeth and James booties.

Radiant retro-chic. It’s the iconic style of jetsetters like Diane von Furstenberg, Bianca Jagger, and Isabella Rossellini—then, now, forever. No piece defines this look better than a signature pair of sunglasses. But are the intricate hardware details, luxe designs, and storied brands of the past just a distant fashion memory? Not if Retrosun founder Nicole Miller has anything to say about it. I recently chatted with Nicole to find out more about her covetable collection of rare vintage sunglasses.

Suzanne: Your story about finding a warehouse of pristine vintage designer sunglasses and then launching Retrosun is like my fashion fantasy come true! How did you come across these amazing shades?
 
Nicole: Before setting up Retrosun in 2006, I had been working as a fashion consultant doing product development and strategy for a variety of high-end fashion and jewelry brands. I was out on a buying trip with a client, and on our travels I came across a few pairs of Christian Dior sunglasses from the 1970s. I was astounded by their beauty and how well they were made. Since then, Retrosun has been sourcing unworn stock from all over the world.

S: Are all your sunglasses new vintage, and where do they come from? How do you guarantee authenticity?

N: Yes all of our sunglasses are new vintage. You can see from the markings inside the glasses, the stamps, etc. where they were produced and that they are authentic. For example, most of the Christian Dior glasses were produced in Austria and West Germany. However, since the ’90s Christian Dior has been produced in Italy.

S: How have the lenses been modernized?

N: All the glasses we find go through stringent quality control checks. Should we find that the lenses do not live up to our standards, the glasses are refitted with Optical class 1, vision 400 lenses, 100% UVA and UVB. These are top lenses in the market and exceed the legal requirements.

S: You carry ’70s to early ’90s styles, everything from Paloma Picasso to Gucci. Do you have a favorite designer and/or era, and what do you find special about the designs of that era?

N: I love the Dior designs from the late ’70s and early ’80s; the colors and the hardware detailing are super special. Also the Porsche Design by Carrera plastic and metal aviators are ultra-cool with their interchangeable faces—they are so of-the-moment. Porsche has even started reproducing the old models due to fashion demands!

S: Could you talk about why it’s important to build a sunglass wardrobe? In my opinion, one pair is hardly enough.

N: Sunglasses are an amazing fashion accessory, which can completely change or complete an outfit, especially Retrosun sunglasses, as each pair is so unique it really is the ultimate fashion accessory you won't find on everyone else. In today’s environment where everyone stocks every brand, it is nice to be able to buy something which is limited in stock, unique, and reasonably priced.

Incredible style, an enviable wardrobe, and a successful blog all before the age of 18? This is the life of Jane Aldridge, the stylish blogger behind Sea of Shoes. The Texas teen has been featured on countless websites and, most recently, in fashion’s bible, Vogue, for her fashion-forward, often daring sense of style. We talked to her about blogging, travel, and the things fashion fetishes are made of, shoes.

You started Sea of Shoes in 2007. What made you decide to launch a personal style blog?

I was inspired by my favorite bloggers like Kingdom of Style and Style Bubble. There were far fewer fashion blogs back then. Mine started as a fun weekend project.

Your style is so sophisticated for someone so young. What role do you think age plays in personal style?

I guess the older you get, the more sure you are of what you like and don’t like. For now I am happy to experiment with lots of different things.

You’re the epitome of a jet-setter. How do your travels to New York, Paris, Tokyo influence your style choices?

The biggest influence of travel on my style is that I love to shop for one-of-a-kind pieces when I’m abroad! But traveling definitely broadens your perspective on fashion, and it’s interesting to see how everyday fashion differs so much, especially in Paris and Tokyo.

Your focus, shoes, is the fetish of many a fashionable woman. What do you think it is that draws so many women to shoes?

Shoes say everything! To me, shoes are special because they are all so different, and beautiful shoes are so rare. Each shoe has a personality of its own. The fact is that there are a lot of ugly shoes in this world, and maybe that’s what makes beautiful shoes so special to us.

You and your mom were featured in a Daughter’s Take/Mother’s Take spread in the August Vogue. What was it like to shoot outfits for fashion’s biggest glossy?

Incredible! We shot in June and we got to use a Vogue trailer full of next season’s clothes and shoes. We were freaking out!

Your style really runs the gamut—one day eclectic, next streamlined. Do you have one main influence, or do you draw your inspiration from many sources?

I take my inspiration from the clothes themselves. I’m always trying to re-imagine my favorite pieces in different contexts.

You’ve already accomplished so much with your blog. Where do you see your fashion future taking you post-high school?

My ultimate dream would be to design shoes. Even if this dream never comes true, I’ve got a lot of other exciting projects to keep me busy. College is definitely in my future, too.

What’s the one thing you must have this fall?

I would like to get a great vintage YSL dress.

I’m not a fan of over-the-top bling, but lately, I’ve found myself drawn to a hint of sparkle in unexpected places—a string of glittering rhinestones on a chunky chain bracelet, an oversized Kenneth Jay Lane ring with a jersey dress and cardigan, a few well-placed beads on an otherwise basic tee. It seems only natural that I would start to explore the sequins-for-day look that has won the hearts of so many fashionable females.

Being a less-is-more kind of girl, I was pretty clueless on where to start with this embellished trend, so I turned to Shopbop Senior Stylist Morgan Wendelborn for a little style help. “Denim and flats are the easiest way to wear sequins for day,” says Morgan. “A sequined tank, tee, or unstructured blazer can look so effortless with slouchy skinnies.”

Easy enough—I already have plenty of denim and flats in my wardrobe. But what about sequin leggings? I’ve been flirting with the embellished leg-wear trend, but have yet to take the plunge. Says Morgan: “Sequin leggings look great with a worn-in graphic tee and a leather jacket (like one from Candela).”

It’s not news that flapper fashion is back in a big way—fringe, sequins, drop-waist dresses, and sparkling headgear are as en vogue today as they were back in the Roaring Twenties. So when my friend Alia Ahmed-Yahia invited me to a Bootleggers and Babes party in Boston (hosted by Elle’s Alexa Brazilian) I didn’t stress about where to find my outfit—but how to stand out in a sea of flappers. (I like attention, so sue me!) Enter Daisy Buchanan. It might sound cliché, but before you say, “of course, The Great Gatsby is your favorite book,” it’s not. But the lifestyle sure is somethin’. Mansions of money separated by neighborhoods, martinis before 5 pm (take that, prohibition), men in white three-piece suits (hello, Robert Redford), pin curls, and an excuse to wear every sort of hat from cloche to cap—what’s not to love? (P.S. Did you know the term gold digger was actually coined in the ’20s? Another loss for Kanye.)

I stumbled upon this Harper’s Bazaar shoot from 2007, featuring Kate Hudson (another style idol of mine) as a modern day Daisy Buchanan—genius. I needed a vintage dress.

I settled on an eggshell peplum-waist frock that I found at Edith Machinist on the LES—hands down the best affordable vintage in the city. I hacked it off as short as humanly possible and kept saying to the tailor, “no, tighter, a little shorter,” until he felt quite uncomfortable and drew the professional line. Add fishnets, patent leather Mary Janes, and my Deepa Gurnani headband, and you got yourself a little taste of Daisy by way of Joyann. I really wanted to wear gloves like Kate Hudson, but was worried the rest of the guests wouldn’t be so in-costume—boy, was I wrong!

The party was a full-on gin mill—a flapper and gangster’s paradise. Everyone brought their best, but my favorite look of the night involved a boa made of money.

While I didn’t find my Jay Gatsby, I did find an affinity for red lipstick (okay, I was already a fan) and a liking for gin mixed with champagne (albeit less amazing the next day). And next time, I’m wearing the gloves!

Stay tuned for my next societal undertaking—Murder on the Dance Floor, a charity party here in N.Y.C. benefiting cerebral palsy. And with a name like that, there should be more than enough fun (and fashion) to speak of.

It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.

Suzanne: At Shopbop we talk a lot about model-off-duty style, this cool mix of unexpected pieces that looks effortless yet stunning. How would you describe your style?

Tova: I guess you could say my style’s main theme is boho comfort, mostly earth-toned basics that are interchangeable. I love matching something oversized with something tight. There's something sexy about a man’s shirt or manly boots on a woman. I always add style to my basic looks with jewelry and accessories, like the scarf in my photo (which is my favorite, and was bought in an airport).

S: How does your boho style fit with your lifestyle?

T: I have a daughter, so when I am not working she and I are playing, cooking, going to little cafés, going for hikes, and laughing—lots of laughter. So my outfits have to be comfortable and flexible, ready for whatever pops up in our ever-changing schedule.

S: You have that Erin Wasson sexy-tomboy vibe going on. Who are your modeling idols and why?

T: I love Kate Moss's style—she always looks so effortless! And I admire Mary-Kate Olsen’s bold, unique choices.

S: As a model, you have to be ready for anything. What has been the craziest or most memorable shoot you have done?

T: I've been modeling on and off since I was 14, so there are plenty of stories and memorable moments. But I always get the most enjoyment out of shoots that are creative, when everyone involved is allowed to do what they do best, to work toward a communicated vision. It’s always fun when you have a good team to shoot guerilla style—driving to some random, out of the way, possibly unsafe location, and shooting for the sake of art. Those shoots are exciting.

S: I heard that you just bought a house in L.A. Tell me about it and what you love about life in SoCal.

T: I live in L.A. in an area called Silver Lake. It is a beautiful, artistic, older area with lots of artists, musicians, and young families. It’s very vibrant, colorful, and peaceful. My daughter and I just moved into a beautiful little house with guava trees, avocado trees, and orange trees in the yard. I feel so blessed and thankful for my life, and living here is no exception. The weather is wonderful, the sun is warming, the sky is blue, and as I write this the wind is making beautiful music with our wind chime.

Our Designer Boutique resort collections have begun to trickle in (coming soon to What’s New!), and their arrival reminded me to take a little stroll through the fall collections we’ve gathered in our purple boutique. This is seriously luxurious style that, yes, is also a serious investment, but these brands offer the kind of pieces that will elevate any closet.

Take Derek Lam’s fall collection. Each season this designer reinvents American sportswear, and the little party dresses, sleek outerwear, and cozy knits are classics in the making. (For you working ladies out there, imagine exchanging business cards while wearing Lam’s fitted blazer, pencil skirt, and high-collar blouse—now that’s a power suit.) Brit favorite Mulberry makes the bags that style luminaries like Kate Moss carry for years, and from my favorite French cobbler, Barbara Bui chaussures are the kind of footwear that make an outfit.

Style investments are not limited to serious pieces, however, as Canadian designers Dean and Dan Caten can attest. Their DSQUARED2 label is tongue-in-cheek playfulness, while retaining a timeless element. And First Lady and Anna Wintour favorite Thakoon takes elegant silhouettes and infuses them with a touch of personality via his signature whimsical prints.

Each would be a noteworthy addition to any wardrobe. Tell me, what’s on your fashion investment list?

The stereotype goes that in the fashion world, it can be a rare thing to find genuine, kind, and truly considerate people, but French blogger, illustrator, and photographer Garance Doré has found two in international Vogue editors Anna Dello Russo and Carine Roitfeld. And we’ve found one in Garance herself. I talked with this charming blogger about photography, illustrations, her boyfriend Sartorialist Scott Schuman, and what it’s like to be in touch with fashion’s royalty.

When and why did you launch GaranceDore.fr?

I launched it three years ago out of frustration from my job, which was at the time being an administrator. I felt like I was very disconnected from the people who see my drawings because when they’re published in a magazine you have no feedback. I felt far away from the readers, so one day I decided to open a blog.

Your website transitioned from focusing on your illustrations to including photography. Do you prefer one over the other?

No, I think it’s all an organic energy. Photography inspires illustration, and illustration inspires photography. I couldn’t do one without the other.

What do you think is the biggest difference between the two?

Illustration is more like a dream representation, and it’s more difficult to grab. People will look at it, and they won’t identify with an illustration so much. But with a picture of someone they can really identify. And I think for fashion … it’s great to have pictures because you can show the actual clothes. With an illustration, you can show the feeling of the clothes.

Each of your posts includes a personal account about fashion or about the person you’re photographing or about the illustration, but you rarely show pictures of yourself. Now, I’ve seen pictures of you, and you have great style. Why don’t you feature yourself on your blog?

It’s not really a choice; it’s not my first interest. I like to talk about my life, but more in a funny way. I don’t know, I could do it, but my blog is my personal diary. I mean, I know what I look like, so I don’t need to show myself. On the contrary, I love to see other people because they inspire me.

During Paris Fashion Week you had the opportunity to photograph Anna Dello Russo in her room at the Ritz. She’s a fashion masterpiece. What’s it like to encounter and work with icons like her?

It’s great because I totally realize how iconic she is, and I think she will be one of the great fashion figures of our time. She has an amazing collection of dresses because she actually buys everything—everything belongs to her.

But I’ve never felt [very] impressed by people. I come from Corsica, and my parents had a restaurant in Corsica, where all the stars, like Brigitte Bardot, would come eat. Corsicans are super proud and they would never ask “Oh, sign an autograph for me.” So I was very used to being with quite impressive people when I was very young. I would see my father talk with them, and he was just the owner of the restaurant. He gave the same respect to stars [as he did] to the usual customers.

I usually don’t like to meet the people I admire, actually, because you can be disappointed, and I like to keep my dream. But with Anna it’s different because I love how she is and I love to love her because she’s a great person, a great human being.

I just read your story about Carine Roitfeld, the editor of French Vogue. What was that experience like? You got to see fashion week through her eyes.
 
It was really amazing. Carine is a great person. She talks to everyone the same way, so I felt very good with her. She asked me a lot about myself. She answered every question. There was no subject that she wouldn’t talk about. She’s just so down to earth. It’s incredible. It was a great moment, but at the same time, I’m quite used to meeting the designers, to going to fashion week, and everything, so it was my usual environment. It was more about her, more about the person she is. I wanted to cry in the end because she is so nice.

You know, I told her Scott [Schuman of The Sartorialst] had a book signing, and she said she’d love to come. I thought, oh yeah, she says that but she won’t have the time because her son had an exhibition that night, too. And at, like, 11 in the evening she left me a message for a quarter of an hour to excuse herself for not coming to the book signing. I thought it was so nice. People never do that, but she’s very connected to everybody.

Who are your favorite people to photograph?

You know what, it’s changing a lot, actually. I like to find new people all the time. But, of course, I love Giovanna Battaglia. I think she’s a never-ending source of inspiration.

I love to take pictures of my boyfriend, Scott, but he’s really bored with that. He doesn’t like me to take pictures of him, but I like to think that in a few years I’m going to have all these pictures of him and look at them and remember the nice times. So the people I love—my sister, for example, because I grew up looking at her, thinking “she’s so beautiful.”

Speaking of Scott, he just released a book. Do you have any plans to release a book as well?

I do, I do. I do have a lot of people coming to me to do a book. I don’t even have time to answer the phone so I don’t know how I’m going to do that, but yeah, it’s one of my plans for the future, of course.

And finally, what is the one thing you must have this fall?

Oh my god! Just to say one? Oh yeah, I know, a white shirt. You can go everywhere and you’re always chic, and you can be sporty. It’s just beautiful.

This favorite blogger is actually three, but we have to admit we’re partial to Carey’s sense of style. Launched in 2008, Corks and Caftans chronicles newlyweds Carey Wodehouse and Rob Burden’s style and wine exploits with special appearances from Eli the cat. Here Carey talks to us about Eli’s diva model attitude, her style icons, and, of course, caftans.

When and why did you launch Corks and Caftans?

C&C was launched in the heinous winter of ’08, while I coped with the loss of my “hot-shot” ad agency job. Funny story: Napa honeymoon was over, I went back to work, poured a cup of coffee, and got let go. C&C is a product of finding the silver lining in that situation. We had passions and we needed an outlet to express how important they were to us––and finally had the time to do it. It became like a working resume.

Your blog mingles your love of fashion and style with your husband Rob’s love of wine, all with a very personal touch. What made you take this direction?

Every blog post could be a conversation we just had on the couch. We encourage each other to talk about what we love, so the blog happened organically. We saw blogs that were either very production-oriented or lacking anything to sink your teeth into. C&C is all us, a lifestyle. We wanted to connect with people at that level. When I’m reading a blog, if there’s only one line that lets you into the author’s life, I linger on it. It’s what I’m there for.

The photography has a very luxe, dramatic feel to it, which adds to the blog’s overall aesthetic. Who’s the photo guru, or is it a collaborative effort?

Oh, that’s Rob. He’s way more artistic than he gives himself credit for. We photograph not to document, but to convey our enthusiasm for the subject. The rich tones amp it up and make the photos more like a distant memory; less like “These are shoes. They are brown.”

There’s a third character in your family: Eli the cat. Is he a willing model, or does he require a little coercion?

He’s been begging me not to renew his 2010 model release, but the guy knows he needs coin to feed his addictions. And when I say addictions, I mean foul, stinking chunks ‘n’ gravy. (Mostly, we can’t get him out of the shots.)

You were a runner-up in Shopbop’s Most Fashionable Fan Contest. How does it feel to win such an honor (wink)?

I’m still in shock! Shopbop is such a huge barometer for all things on the forefront—so tastefully done, and so clearly driven by the trusted talents of its stylists that I find it to be unparalleled. To say it was an honor is an understatement.

Your look seems to veer toward the bohemian. How would you define your personal style?

If a tweed-clad, gin drinking, insubordinate British bachelor––recklessly driving an old MG through the countryside, hitting a pothole, and sending a wheel flying off––tragically died and were to donate all of his blood/good sense/off-color humor to a pregnant, Hemingway-loving, Allman Brothers groupie... I’d pop out.

Who is your style icon?

Kate Hudson, circa her marriage to Black Crowes’ frontman Chris Robinson. I have a sort of stalkerish envelope with pictures of them cut from tabloids. They were this effortless, unwashed downtown duo––a rock and roll fantasy. However, I could never ask Rob to paint his toenails blue like Chris did.

What’s the one thing you must have this fall?

The big sweater cardigans are amazing this year! As a caftan lover, I’m drawn to volume that creates drama. I’m torn between Haute Hippie’s Blanket Poncho and Mara Hoffman’s Peace Scarf. They’re theatrical, but also kind of like woobies.

And finally, what’s your favorite caftan and what’s Rob’s favorite wine?

Caftan: silk floral Missoni seen on both Margherita Missoni and Nicole Richie: heaven. Wine: Cuvaison 2006 Arcilla: a complex Syrah/Merlot/Malbec blend from Carneros, California.

Most women have a modest jewelry box, drawer, or corner armoire, but super-stylist Rachel Zoe has a meticulously organized jewelry closet that rivals my walk-in. On the season finale of her show, we got a peek at her personal bauble collection (upwards of 1,000 pieces), and I love her no-shame justification: “Chanel is my art collection.”

I could totally relate to this sentiment. When company drops by, I have to explain why my living room is scattered with designer shoes and my bedroom with dramatic earrings, while the walls are virtually bare. Whenever my mom takes pity on my painting-free apartment, offering me a scented candle to up the ambience, I try to convince her that Kenneth Jay Lane cuffs make better sculptures, that vintage Chanel jewelry is its own brand of French Romanticism, and that a TOM BINNS necklace emits a fervor that will burn much longer than 24 hours.

Eventually I’ll get to the wall art, but for now, I’m focused on perfecting the neck, ear, and wrist art.

Armed with a magazine background, Emily Schuman launched Cupcakes and Cashmere in March of 2008. Featuring her impeccable personal style, as well as mouthwatering recipes and DIY home design features, this blog has a little something for every fashionable female. Here she talks with us about working at Condé Nast, how food and fashion relate, and sequins for daytime.

When and why did you launch Cupcakes and Cashmere?

I constantly come across new things (whether it’s a great jewelry line or a fabulous pair of boots) and I liked the idea of sharing my findings with other people. I launched my blog in March of 2008 and document things that bring me joy.

Cupcakes and Cashmere has a very personal tone—you fully welcome your readers into your style world. What made you decide to take this approach?

It was never really a conscious decision, but it speaks to who I am as a person. I’m fairly open and think that adding my own opinions and personal touches to my blog makes it feel very accessible. I think people can relate to me since I’m not a model, but just a girl who throws together outfits and puts my own spin on trends.

You have a background in magazines (Teen Vogue and Domino). How has this influenced Cupcakes and Cashmere?

When I worked at Condé Nast, it was like a little runway show every morning. If you had a new top or even lip gloss, we all wanted to know about it. It was such a fun environment, and I think I’ve found a similar one within the blogosphere where we all like sharing what we like.

The food element is somewhat unusual for a fashion blog, and yet it ties so perfectly into your blog’s tone and aesthetic. How do you feel it balances your other posts?

I think it’s rare for fashion and food to go together and that really saddens me! They’re both everyday essentials and yet I think people sometimes get lazy about making a good meal or putting together a creative outfit.

Your look seems to veer toward girly romantic, with a hint of an edgy bohemian thrown in. How would you define your personal style?

I’d say you just about nailed it! I think a bit of juxtaposition is good, which is why I’ll never be in a frilly dress paired with bouncy curls and dainty sandals. I like to mix things up by throwing on something unexpected, whether that’s an oversized men’s watch or a studded blazer with a lace dress.

Who is your style icon?

I’m drawn to women that seem put together, but never appear as though they’ve put a ton of effort into their look. I think Rachel Bilson, Kate Bosworth, and Sienna Miller have a great sense of style and never let trends overwhelm their natural beauty.

What’s the one thing you must have this fall?

If I had to choose just one thing I love for fall it would have be sequins. They add such a glamorous aspect to an outfit, and I love how they’re now daytime appropriate. Instead of saving up all of my sequined pieces for holiday parties, I plan on wearing them with distressed jeans.

What’s on the horizon for Cupcakes and Cashmere?

You can expect more DIY posts, before-and-afters, inspirational outfit shoots, and recipes that are as easy as they are delicious, as well as some exciting features coming up.
