SHOE STARS TO WATCH: SOPHIA WEBSTER RICHARD BRAQO CHELSEA PARIS SD YOHANS

The luxury footwear category seems to be exploding on a monthly basis. From emerging new designers to well-shod consumers around the world vying to wear the most prescient in the category, heel detailing continues to dominate the luxury shoe landscape with unusual shapes, materials and inspiration. Here we take a look at a few of these emerging shoe stars designing in this ever-fascinating milieu.

Richard Braqo Ghana-born Richard Braqo landed on the fashion radar after he entered (on a lark) — and consequently won the brand new Cesare Paciotti Accessories Award for his thesis collection at Parson’s. A collaboration with Paciotti soon landed his footwear co-creations in Barneys and Saks, and Brago then moved to London to intern for Helmut Lang and Acne before launching his debut collection in September of 2012. The collection is full of hard edges, vertiginous five and six inch platforms and unexpected embellishments, like a gold spear bedecking the side of an ankle boot, metallic fringe scales, gold ankle bracelets providing the ankle strap to a stiletto and fierce warrior like gold spike stiletto heels, He characterizes the line as “juxtaposing the masculine and feminine” with luxurious suedes and velvets in cobalt, Bordeaux and black, while incorporating masculine details from men’s brogues and gold metallic edges. Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Beyonce have already embraced the collection and retailers such as Wolf and Badger in London and Mahani in Dubai have snatched up the line.

Chelsea Paris Nigerian-born, London-based shoe designer Theresa Ebagua was a former IT executive who had an epiphany on a business trip, enrolled in Ars Sutoria, and promptly launched her line, Chelsea Paris, soon after. Named after her two daughters, Ebagua’s line uses materials from ostrich feathers to snakeskin and suede, while detailed and intricate caging, latticework, a signature heel “collar” shape and scalloped edging create a sumptuous array of silhouettes. For Spring 2013, heel detailing figures prominently with a spike stiletto enrobed in a knot of rose gold and pewter. This “knotted heel” was inspired by a Japaense necklace signifying affection and luck Ebagua had picked up on her world travels. Orange, lavender, python, grey, black, contrast trim details, intricate mesh panels and a caged lattice knee-high Spring boot, make this her most cohesive collection yet. Already sold at Chuckie’s and Fred Segal stateside, Chaloub Scarpe in Dubai and Beams House in Tokyo—and seen on the feet of celebrities as diverse as Ginnifer Goodwin and Kristen Stewart—this global brand is well-positioned to continue storming the shoe shores.

Sophia Webster Also hailing from London, Sophia Webster was first discovered by Nicholas Kirkwood. Although she had the distinction of being Kirkwood’s first-ever design assistant, their relationship was forged under the auspices of him helping her launch her own line after two years at his company. And launch she did. Webster’s debut received so much acclaim that she managed to capture the rapt attention of the British Fashion Council, which promptly awarded her the New Gen award, making Webster the first shoe to ever designer to win it. Her fresh designs belie an attention to craftsmanship and detail—delicate lacings, intricate cutwork and bold graphical elements from multi-colored leopard to tribal zig-zags to bubbles, all in a riot of bold colors like cobalt, peach, orange and citrus yellow, which are strong yet feminine. Heels attract just as much attention as uppers here with what appear to be stacked bead stilettos rendered in metal, painted polka dot heels and collaged wedge platform heels. Influencer retailers from Net-a-Porter to Kirna Zabete and Colette snapped up the collection, with On Pedder, Level Shoe District and Harvey Nichols following suit. And an e-commerce platform is soon set to launch on Webster’s own site for her cult-like fans like actress Chloe Moretz. ,

SD Yohans Rounding out the shoe stars comes up-and-comer Selam D Yohans a British-Eritrean designer based in London. The former banking whiz trained at Cordwainer’s, where she completed both a Bachelors and Masters degree. Her final thesis culminated in an extreme convex heel shape that encompassed hours of theoretical research around women’s concepts of beauty throughout the world. Her current collection takes inspiration from Andre Dubreuil’s iconic, delicately curved furniture designs, producing hourglass shapes like enveloping ankle sleeves and seductive swooping design details that enfold the foot, all of which echo back the shape of the gently swelling stiletto heel that blooms where it meets the upper. An architectural wooden wedge heel with a severe front-cut in the platform over the knee boots, and strong graphic cutwork round out this scientifically sexy collection. Combined with a palette of black, deep jade, vibrant ruby, caramel and gold with dashes of white, rendered in suedes, pony, python, snake and hard metals, the total effect is one of come-hither, statement-making silhouettes. Adored by British pop star Katie Malua and UK actress Jemima Roper, Yohans’ creations are currently available at Independent Boutique in the UK, Carnet De Mode in France and online by special order at the designer’s website.

FROM BAGS TO SHOES AND BACK AGAIN

Accessories are the biggest retail drivers of global luxury brands. Items like shoes, bags and perfumes present an opportunity to cement brand positioning in the marketplace as well as capitalize on high margins without the capital expenditures, time and energy of full apparel collections. From Gucci to Prada, these accessories are an ideal way to appeal to a wider demographic, giving those who don’t have the means to buy entire wardrobes a way to enter the prestige of the brand for a smaller investment. A rare breed of up-and-coming luxury footwear designers, however, have started to turn this thinking on its head by deploying a well-executed handbag strategy after firmly establishing themselves in footwear first.

The standout in this category is Jerome Rousseau whose launch of evening bags was part of a holistic brand game plan. The DNA of Jerome C. Rousseau footwear includes plays on volume and silhouette, hard metallic embellishments and interesting contrasts and the designer was very clear that these elements show up in his handbag line. “My handbag line is very evening and elegant, yet youthful, a fierce minaudière, a piece to notice,” says Rousseau. As the brand is such a favorite on the red carpet, the bags were carefully crafted to be “small works of art” that could complement Rousseau’s shoes. The handbag launch also supported his new e-commerce site by offering a fresh product that would draw already obsessed fans to this new sales channel.

As for others to watch, Charlotte Olympia’s handbags reflect her whimsical style, as evidenced by shapes from from a poodle to a toucan, as well as elegant hard boxes made of bright colored Perspex. Sold at retail at Neiman Marcus and Net-a-Porter, the bags stand to continue making a splash as her brand grows. Nicholas Kirkwood, meanwhile, is now positioned as a major brand in the luxury footwear domain with standalone stores in both London and New York, and is currently designing bags for a launch rumored to be sometime in late 2013, as we went to press. His protege Sophia Webster has already rolled out a few whimsical candy-colored and metallic evening clutches adorned with her signature bubble shapes on Net-a-Porter. SHOE OBSESSION: FIT’S VALERIE STEELE TALKS SHOES WITH MEGHAN CLEARY

Shoe Obsession, an exhibit currently up at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s museum in New York, features more than 150 pairs of extraordinary shoe styles of the 21^st century, from Manolo Blahnik stilettos to Noritaka Tatehana avant-garde platform ballet shoes. JC Report’s resident footwear expert, Meghan Cleary, had a chance to sit down with Valerie Steele, the curator of the exhibit, who is also authoring a book by the same name, to learn more about the inner world of Shoe Obsession.

JC Report: What surprised you most when you were putting together the exhibition?

Valerie Steele: We’ve had an overwhelming response to this exhibition. It’sbeen flooded with more visitors even more than our Daphne Guinness show. We’re getting something like 600 a day during the week and 1,500 on Saturdays. It is absolutely mobbed on Saturdays. People just really, really, love shoes. They really are obsessed with shoes.

JCR: What is your favorite piece from the exhibition, and why?

VS: I really love the Bruno Frisoni for Roger Vivier eyelash shoe with the feathers coming out of the back. It’s fabulous. It’s so elegant and so new. The idea of drawing attention to the heel by having this sort of explosion of feathers at the back is just so brilliant. And I also really love the fetish ballet shoe by Christian Louboutin—I think a lot of the appeal of high heels is related to that incredible arch in the foot and you see that with the ballet dance en pointe. And so with this shoe, which is of course completely impossible to walk in, you have the sort of extreme fetish version of the ballerina en pointe. I love the Prada flame shoe too. It’s just so clever, this association of shoes with the kind of pop culture of ‘50s classic automobiles and the dynamism and wit of those shoes is amazing.

JCR: A really well built shoe is almost like a really well built car—true or false?

VS: It’s true. A lot of these shoes are really extraordinarily well constructed. As well they ought to be considering the price they cost, but the designers really are thinking clearly not only in terms of creative design, but in terms of the engineering of the shoe. I think that’s another area where with three-dimensional printing we’re going to be able to see all kinds of very interesting future designs once that gets a little less expensive. That’s going to really free up designers to do amazing things. And we also have other shoes in the collection like Conspiracy, this Italian brand—they use titanium, so I mean there’s all kinds of experimenting with new materials and new processes.

JCR: When you think about fashion and identity, where do shoes come into the picture?

VS: When I’ve interviewed women, they’ve talked about how shoes permit so much freedom to play and to exploit different aspects of personality and attitude, style and aesthetics in a way that you’d be reluctant to do head to toe.

JCR: Why did you name the exhibit Shoe Obsession?

VS: It seemed to me that that was the perfect term for it. It’s not just a love of shoes, and a term like addiction would sound to pejorative, it really does seem to be an obsession. Shoes, especially now, are like works of art or sculpture that people really admire almost as miniature works of art. So it seemed to me that obsession was the best term for this intense love. There is a little bit of an Imelda Marcos in every woman and a little bit of shoe fetishist in many men.

JCR: What type of cultural statement do you think designers like Noritaka Tatehana are making?

VS: Noritaka is self-taught and really began by investigating traditional Japanese aesthetics and those wooden geta sandals. What he does is a kind of fantasy shoe and he’s been tremendously influential with his heel-less high heel, which initially only a handful of people like Lady Gaga were wearing. And then when I discovered him and introduced him to Daphne Guinnes, she also was really thrilled with what he did. I think that the power of fantasy and imagination in his work, and also in that of some of the other Japanese designers who are featured in the show, is really extraordinary and kind of inspiring. Another of the shoes that I really love in the show that we got for the museum is his version of ballet shoes, which take you up 18 inches off the ground. He made a pair especially for Lady Gaga and then we asked him to make a pair especially for the museum.

JCR: In your opinion, how have shoe silhouettes changed over the years? Or have they changed?

VS: Oh they have, and I think in the last 10 years, which is the period that we focus on, what’s been most extraordinary has been how the heel itself has become higher and higher, and that in turn is related to the popularity of platforms. So the fact that you put a platform on the front of the shoe means that you can add one, two, three inches to the heel. That’s gone very extreme and people really had to learn how to walk in those shoes. Now there seems to be a pendulum swing back towards what’s called the single sole shoe where the sole is just one sole, not a kind of built in platform. Back to the Manolo Blahnik classic pump.

JCR: Why do you think that is?

VS: It’s gotten about as far as it can go. It’s typical for more inflationary effects in clothing, the mini-skirt went as high as it could go and then when socially, culturally, women wouldn’t wear it any higher, or their underpants started to show, then it dropped and we’re seeing the same thing. I mean now it’s gone so high that you have to be Lady Gaga to be able to walk in it. Although heaven knows people have trained themselves. Nicholas Kirkwood has said in interviews that some of his clients say that they really don’t want to give it up because they love being that much taller, and they’ve learned how to walk in it. For many women it’s more comfortable with a platform, but I think it’s reached its extreme and so we’re finding the pendulum effect back.

JCR: After doing this exhibit, would you say that the shoe defines the woman or that the woman defines the shoe?

VS: I think by featuring collectors as well as designers in the show, you can really tell the personality of the collector—it really comes through. These are women who could buy any shoes in the world and they buy often from the same designers but they have different aesthetics. You can really see some of them are fashion forward, others are more into absolute luxury and quality, others are more into a decorative aesthetic, or a kind of fierce aesthetic. I mean it’s very, very, different styles so I think that I wanted to make that point in the show. That it wasn’t just all these creative designers but that it was also women themselves building these collections of shoes which were in a way reflecting their own aesthetic.

JCR: In your opinion, who are the most innovative shoe designers working today?

VS: Innovative is a tricky word. We put a lot of designers in the show who are really more extreme designers. Often very young ones that you wouldn’t have heard of, but we appreciate the way they’re pushing the envelope and what they’re doing. In order to become a recognizable famous designer, you can’t do too much of that or you’re losing customers. So the younger designers who have come up in the world tend to be more like the Nicholas Kirkwood’s, the Charlotte Olympia’s. They’re creative obviously, but they’re not sort of ultra-extreme. I think that innovation has many forms, many of my women collectors in the show have shoes by Charlotte Olympia who’s one of a new generation of women designers coming to the fore. And often the collectors have said to me ‘oh her shoes are so comfortable!’ Meanwhile, you’ve got Louboutin who says, “my job is not to make shoes comfortable.” I think that there are different, not only different aesthetics but also different interests in the way that some of the shoes are coming out.

JCR: What are your personal favorite shoes to wear?

VS: Oh I’m addicted to Repetto shoes. It’s a brand where they make shoes for ballerinas. I got them initially with little ballet flats but they also make high heels and so you can get a very high heel, or pretty high heel, but they’re just really well structured. It’s very easy to walk in them and walk quickly and walk far—I’m a New Yorker so I walk everywhere.

What your shoes say about you

You know when you have an intuition about something, and then if you are me, you study it with great care, write two books about it, and go on TV talking about it, and work on a movie about it, just generally talk about it in general all the time (well maybe like 95% of the time), literally all over the world, and then one day, after many years, someone does an independent study that validates once again what you’ve believed and been talking about all those years?

Well, today is that day for me!

A most wonderful team at University of Kansas did a psychological study* confirming that shoes really have something to say about you.

Ever since I wrote my first book in 2005, The Perfect Fit: What your shoes say about you, I have truly believed that shoes, more than anything a woman puts on her body,

reveals her state of mind in that moment.

As women we are creatures of many moods. We also use shoes to change our moods — and our identities. It’s psychological and physiological, which means our shoe choices are pretty profound.

Last night I got a chance to read the entire,

hot-off-the-presses study and thought I’d share some highlights that stood out to me.

I could not be happier. For seven years I have covered shoe trends, written about shoes and poems, what shoes say about what celebs, have given tips on everything from how to organize your shoes to how to make your spring shoes more comfortable, watched musicals about shoes, created the first social media campaign for Made in Italy shoes (and written about the Made in Italy renaissance), helped out on and appeared in a documentary about shoes, and have gotten to meet some of the most amazing shoe designers working today.

Whew!

All because of a passion to understand what your shoes say about you.

God Save My Shoes

Wanted to let you all know that God Save My Shoes begins it’s U.S. theatrical run at the Quad Cinema in Manhattan

starting tomorrow Friday, March 30!

As you know, Stilettos are the most charged style of footwear with lots of hidden and ascribed meanings, cultural significance

and are a great topic for lively debate.

God Save My Shoes explores the relationship between

women and high heels, specifically Stilettos.

The film features shoe-aholics like Dita von Teese and Fergie - to illustrious shoe designers like Christian Louboutin and Pierre Hardy.I am extremely proud to be a part of this film –

both appearing in it, and serving as Consulting Producer

Last week, I had the good fortune to travel to Sundance to see the world premiere of DETROPIA, the painterly, gorgeous portrait of Detroit created by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady.

While I was there, I had to check out the shoes, of course.

Watching the Superbowl last night on a giant screen with amazing sound and a large helping of Kung Pao chicken on my plate, got me to thinking naturally, about shoes.

My Top Five Shoes at the Superbowl:

Had to start with Danny De Vito and his pair of. . . Crocs? Not sure what he was doing but thought it was interesting he wanted to put his bare foot on the SuperBowl carpet.

Number two on my list, Kelly Clarkson in a two-tone extremely ladylike Stiletto. With her fringy bangs and retro glam dress, I thought these shoes summed up her new look in a

really lovely way.

Number three, Elton John of course in the Pepsi commercial. This is a man who is entirely comfortable in over the top platforms. He loves a good costume and it suits him well.

Number four, Katy Perry in her two different color ASH wedgesneakers. This is a woman who has no fear when it comes to expressing herself and I like that she went with a totally fun yet comfortable shoe. Love a hidden wedge.

And of course Number One could be no other than Madge. I mean, hello, the woman does splits, headstands, humps a few dancers and wraps her legs around one half of LMFAO’s head — all in five inch extremely fierce Givenchy boots.

If those boots could talk!

WHAT YOUR SHOES SAY ABOUT YOU: THE GRAMMYS (R)

The Grammys ® is one of my favorite award shows for shoes because musicians tend to push the boundaries when it comes to fashion. And of course, my signature tagline (and philosophy), what your shoes say about you is quite revealing at a show like this. There was a trend toward DM boots in the performances (Rihanna, Katy Perry) — indicating a bit of a sea-change in what women are wearing to perform in, and for men we saw a lot of cool trainers.

My Top Five Shoes at the Grammys ®:

Number five, Skylar Grey arrived on the red carpet early, and I was immediately taken with her choice. She wore a white 1920′s inspired knee length dress and instead of pairing it with anything matchy matchy she went for a full on bold red, pointed toe platform booty-stiletto hybrid. I was into it.

What the shoes say: ”Bold and passionate, understated glamour”

Number four on my list is Diana Ross. Loved the crystal embellished t-strap kitten heel sandals. Appropriate, not over the top, and loved the combo with her pantsuit. she threw in some of-the-moment coral toenail color which popped the outfit. Another example of how your pedicure can optimize an all-black outfit.

What the shoes say: ”I’m still in it to win it”

Rihanna + Alicia Keys coming in together at Number Three. Many an accolade has been poured on for Rihanna’s ensemble and while I wasn’t a super big fan of the hair situation, I did love her clear PVC and black ankle-strap Louboutins. They were a perfect elegant compliment to an incredibly sexy dress.

What the shoes say: ”I’m growing up and embracing my inner lady”

For Alicia, I loved the knee length dress and bold shoulder pads. Paired with this shoe, I’d say it was the height of elegance.

What the shoes say: ”I’ve grown up and embracing my womanhood”

Number Two, Cyndi Lauper. Even though she got dissed by some for her ensemble, I love her mary jane style gold metallic and black suede peep toe platform stilettos. I thought they looked hot and went amazingly with her entire outfit.

What her shoes say: ”I am still the queen of fun, bitches”

And of course, Adele in at Number One. I can’t emphasize enough how much her understated old-school glamour is an extremely refreshing addition to the fashion landscape. The focus is always on the voice and the music, and this time was no different. I thought her dress was perfect and her shoes a fitting compliment. Her Christian Louboutin Fifi in encrusted silver glitter showed offjust a peek underneath her glittery black dress and added a sense of fun and youth to what could have been a somber dress. Perfection untold.

What her shoes say: ”I am incredibly elegant, but I also like to have a bit of fun”

And just had to make one note because I am one of her hugest fans since the days of “Always be around”.

Robyn, my friend, WHAT were you thinking? The ultimate fashion self-sabotage in the form of a shoe. Please call me next time. I will help you into the perfect shoes.
