I have been wearing my shoes all week in NYC for the FFANY Shoe Show and I can tell you firsthand how comfortable they are — even the platforms!

That’s because I insist on a bunch of memory foam in every pair, besides a ton of architectural details you might not even notice but I do! For animal lovers out there, this Spring collection is entirely Vegan — lots of great materials like twill and a very soft fake snake. I have been wearing the platform nude snake stilettos with everything from red cocktail dresses at footwear industry events to jeans and top for my media appearances.  I paired the black and white snake ones with a black Prada dress and they were incredibly elegant I must say.  Threw the flat beaded thong sandals in my bag so I could switch out later in the evening to walk through the downpour we had!  The platform twill wedges you are going to scream for! They go with everything, are super comfy and are going to sell out so get them early.

(And ps. My ballet flats from this Winter I wear as my new travel shoes — they are perfect for running to catch planes and hauling your luggage through airports, while still looking chic and pulled together. I wear them in glossy black, but my cousin Gen wears her plum ones when travelling and gets a lot of attention in them. They are on SUPER super sale right now so stock up (so are my elegant silk evening bags and shoe clips )

THE FALL SHOE REPORT

The shoescape for Fall 2010 is a promising one, full of exciting stories on silhouettes and materials as well as a return to some classic early-’90s toe shapes and lasts. Repertoires are also set to emphasize exotic skins and trims, mesh overlays, cutwork, and lattice.

Chrissie Morris has deservedly seen her profile skyrocket not only by adding Bellhaus and Kirna Zabete, but Tender, Zainab, and The Wynn to her roster of retailers, in addition to acquiring her own factory in Italy after only six short seasons.  On the materials side, she remains an innovator to watch, pairing a material loved by surfers–neoprene with stingray accents, as well as velcro and stretch leather as “bandage” accents. Her intriguing new use of magnets–running vertically down the heels, allowing for magnetized trims to be taken on and off at will, pairing skin accents with a plain shoe depending on the wearer’s mood–in her shoes have never been seen before. A favorite of fashion influencers from Queen Rania to Jada Pinkett Smith, Morris’ angular cutwork, vertiginous platforms, and feathers round out the collection.

Nicole Brundage continues to light up the landscape with a chunky parenthesis heel and whimsical bow-wrap details in an autumnal palette of burnished brown leathers, steel velvets, and washed metallic slate grey suedes. Her new endeavor, Acrobats of God, features a more pared-down sensibility with wooden heels and thick elastic straps on every style, which are being eaten up by shoppers everywhere from Opening Ceremony to Le Bon Marche–where a special pop-up store featured the shoes prominently this Spring. Fall sees Acrobats of God move into deeper hues from saturated navy to black, introducing a modified t-strap style and aggressive tread soles.

Celebs from Dita von Teese to Britney Spears continue to embrace Max Kibardin’s peep-toe ankle booties and skyscraper stilettos with oversize ankle bows, as well as his refined latticework and sophisticated lasts. Metallics like glossy gold and burnished copper stand out, as well as grey and black satin, with such accents as delicate feathers to chunky rectangular crystals. A refined pointy toe also makes a comeback here in quite a few elegant evening sandal looks that feature cutwork so delicate it seems to be suspended on the foot.

Two bright new stars out of London join forces with the collaboration of United Nude and Iris van Herpen, an Amsterdam expat apparel designer whose made-to-order creations usually sell for more than £1500 a pair. Turning out futuristic hoof-like platforms in black and glossy gold with slashed leather detailing, at  £895 these avant-garde creations are worth a second, third, and fourth look. Recent graduate Rick Goodwin makes shoes–fetish-inspired, turned-toe, extreme platforms with severe box-toe accents and details including nails hanging from the heel–which compliment and take inspiration from his handmade helmets. These one-of-a-kind creations are still being made in his home studio, so catch them while you can.

Will Tabitha Simmons continue her stint as the shoe world’s latest It Girl with her mix of exotic skins and old-world informed silhouettes? Will Rick Owens persevere as the master of gutsy, hard, angular elegance in the platform? We are looking forward to finding out.

Pretty dangerous: shoes come under scrutiny for their potential to damage feet

Cigarettes, once upon a time, were thought of as a glamorous addiction. Today, they come with a health warning.

Could it be that certain shoes may one day face a similar fate? Leora Tanenbaum hopes so.

“In all seriousness, I suggest that pointy-toed, high-heeled shoes should come with a warning printed on the shoe box,” said Tanenbaum, author of the new book, “Bad Shoes and the Women Who Love Them” (Seven Stories Press, May 2010). “These shoes are a health hazard. Wearing them for prolonged periods on a regular basis may lead to deformity, pain and ugly feet. Your Achilles tendons may shorten, making it impossible to wear flats even if you want to. Wear with caution.”

Over the past few years, shoes — those things that humans have laced up, slipped into and strapped on for centuries — are coming under new scrutiny for their potential to do us bodily harm.

Tanenbaum’s focus is primarily on those towering, platform, high-heeled torture chambers that have been all the rage for the past five years or so — think Christian Louboutin’s red-soled beauties or just about any pair of shoes worn by Victoria Beckham.

But more innocent-appearing footwear, the kind we turn to when our feet ache — ballet flats, flip-flops, even running shoes — also have come under assault.
Tanenbaum’s book — an amusing as well as eye-opening read that traces women’s abuse of their feet all the way back to biblical times — cites a litany of medical research about the unpleasant and downright ugly dangers of wearing heels higher than 2-1/2 inches. Corns and callouses are mild compared to bunions, bloody blisters, hammer toes and plantar fasciitis (inflammation on the bottom of the feet).

But skyscraper heels may not be the only offenders. A study published in December found that some running shoes can put more strain on joints than a pair of stilettos. Ugg boots and flip-flops also have been cited by the American Podiatric Medical Society for their lack of support, potentially leading to sprained ankles and ligament injuries.

Dr. Casey Kerrigan, a specialist in biomechanics and human gait, examined 68 subjects running on a treadmill both barefoot and wearing running shoes. The shoes increased the torque — or twisting — of joints by more than 30 percent, more than the torque increase typically shown in women wearing high heels.

The study has added fuel to a micro-trend of joggers, walkers and even marathoners forsaking footwear all together and opting instead to go barefoot when they hit the track.
So what’s up with all this focus on the feet?
Dr. Kathleen Stone, president of the American Podiatric Medical Association and a podiatrist in Glendale, Ariz., attributes it to the “aging of the active baby boomers. This is the generation that is coming into more middle age and still attempting to do things and stay physically fit and now their feet are hurting, and they’re asking questions. It’s part of the aging process. The joints and, in particular, the feet take so much abuse.”
Americans’ obsession with wellness also has trickled down to our toes, said Meghan Cleary, author of “The Perfect Fit: What Your Shoes Say About You,” and a frequent TV commentator and blogger about footwear and fashion.
“Shoes have always been an interesting indicator of what’s going on in society,” she said. “Right now there’s a real focus on wellness across the board, and that’s leading to the attention on shoes.”
Cleary pointed to the growing genre of footwear designed to give legs a workout while you’re walking, such as Reebok Easy Tone, Skechers Shape Ups, FitFlops and MBTs.
“They’ve become best-sellers,” she said of the various tone-up trainers. “What’s interesting is that FitFlops specifically put you off balance so your muscles work harder. Basically the same thing happens when you wear stilettos. They force you to pull in on your stomach and you use your legs in a different way.”
Heel heights also have been inching skyward over the past decade. Today, it’s common to see professionals in business suits hobbling to work on 3- and 4-inch heels. Such footwear once was the exclusive style for women who worked not in offices, but in strip clubs and on street corners.
Christian Louboutin, the shoe designer beloved by Carrie Bradshaw acolytes everywhere, gets some of the credit for starting this trend, with his Hyper Prive wrapped platform pumps.
“Louboutin changed the shoe landscape,” Cleary said. “When he introduced five-inch stilettos, all hell broke loose. Other designers started going higher and higher.”
With shoes like these, the first jolt of pain may come from the steep designer price tag.
After that, it could be the toes or the heels that start to ache.

Had a total blast — Seattle and Boston were great towns to visit and the flagship Nordstrom was MAY-jor.  almost passed out at some green snake Miu Miu platform pumps.  But I didn’t thank goodness.

A well heeled authority

Meghan Cleary still remembers the embroidered baby-blue wedge espadrille sandals that sparked her obsession with footwear. She was 5. The shoes were at Kmart. “I felt like if I had those on my feet, I could really rock the playground.’’

Following a detour as a Wall Street marketing consultant — one guess what she blew her salary on — Cleary refashioned herself as “America’s Shoe Expert.’’ Now she rocks red carpets and green rooms, commenting on trends and educating anyone in earshot about the transformative power of shoes. She published “The Perfect Fit: What Your Shoes Say About You’’ in 2005.

“My philosophy is that shoes, more than anything else a woman puts on her body, reveal her state of mind,’’ Cleary says. “We use shoes to change our moods, too. You may be feeling low, but put on your sassy flats and life looks better.’’ Cleary will be at Nordstrom at the Burlington Mall from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday to talk about the latest trends.

Q. When people ask you what you do, what’s your answer?

A. I say that I’m a shoe expert. But now I have to say I’m the original shoe expert, because there are imitators.

Q. Isaac Mizrahi called you a shoe therapist.

A. That was so funny. I went on his show, and he took a bunch of shoes from the girls in the audience and lined them up on the counter and asked me to analyze the girls based on their shoes. The last pair were these dog-hair-covered clogs, and I described the owner as a really down-to-earth girl, but he had totally tricked me. They were his shoes.

Q. Each chapter in your book describes a different type of girl, like cowboy boot girl and sneaker girl. Which type are you?

A. I’m a ballet flat/stiletto girl. I’m practical and hard-working, but I also love the glitz and glamour.

Q. How many pairs of shoes do you own?

A. I probably have about 90 here in LA and the same or more in New York.

Q. Do you have a favorite?

A. I do, and everyone is so sick of them. They’re Azzedine Alaia, a silvery gray python platform stiletto. They’re so sexy, but the heel is a little chunky and I can do eight-hour days in them. Talk about feeling like a version of yourself. I’ll put them on for a conference call.

Q. So what’s hot for spring?

A. Some people call it a caged look, also known as lattice work. We’re also seeing a lot of stonework and beading, and a lot of fun, high-heeled clogs.

5FROM CALIFORNIA PROMISES A NEW KIND OF CALIFORNIA DREAMING

Fifteen years after Rick Owens launched his eponymous knitwear line in Los Angeles, the once style-challenged city has transformed into a fashion mecca. The LA landscape is now dotted with burgeoning talents—such as Endovanera, J Mary, Raquel Allegra, Franklin + Gower—while stores like Church, Zainab and Unholy Matrimony have become boutique tastemakers and big designers increasingly look out West for inspiration. In the midst of this boom, 5From California is a new collective that’s determined to blow LA stereotypes out of the water—on a global scale.

Comprised of Katy Rodriguez, Jenni Kayne, Emily Jerome, Gregory Parkinson and Jerome Rousseau, the group has an independent spirit and edgy approach that will quickly influence the fashion world at large. Longtime friends Rodriguez and Parkinson launched the collective out of a desire for more control over how their collections were presented and sold. Jerome, a designer and recent LA transplant, was introduced to the group by Rodriguez’s muse, Jessica Joffe, while Barney’s Michelle Smoot recommended Rousseau and the group organically grew to include Jenni Kayne. “We love L.A and wanted to include other people we like,” Parkinson explains of the way her brainchild has grown.

For seven days during Paris Fashion Week, 5From California showed in the heart of the Marais at an art gallery called Galerie DIX9. Buyers from Harvey Nichols, Barneys, Le bon Marche and Browns dropped by, along with editors from Vogue, Marie Claire, UK Elle and LUCKY. A subsequent follow-up event was held at LA’s Palihouse, where everyone from WWD to Style.com dropped by for a sneak peek at the designers’ looks for fall.

The members of 5From California represent what is unique about the LA landscape, and, increasingly, its the fashion scene as well—an eclectic combination of music art, international residents, an emphasis on the natural world as well as access to the glitz and glam of Hollywood. “I gather inspiration from various other places and references, but it is here that I get to develop the ideas and concepts that shape my collections,” confesses Rousseau. For Emily Jerome, on the other hand, LA fostered a desire for design: “I felt like I had nothing to wear and couldn’t find exactly what I wanted , so I made my own clothes!”

LA still has a ways to go before becoming a serious fashion capital, but with 5From California and its peers’ flurry of talent and activity, it’s not all that far away.
