AVON VOICES: HOLLYWOOD SHOOT

Had a chance to swing by the AVON VOICES Hollywood shoot and coaching session last Friday. Truly amazing. One, all the contenders have AMAZING voices — beautiful to hear them belt out some of the classics, and two, Maia the Colombian singing sensation was truly a wonderful mentor and example not only to the contestants but to me! You can watch her live and in action with some of the contestants here. She also always wears Stilettos wherever she goes and I met her in a pair of six inch green ankle strap heels that were extremely rocking.

I asked her advice for any woman who needs to be speaking, performing or singing in public as part of their job or as their job and her advice?

“Use the mirror — it is your friend — practice in front of the mirror! and practice practice practice . . .always get to know what you are communicating -understand where you want certain effects, intonations . . . and keep practicing” . Thank you Maia!

So keep tuning in and vote for your favorite — though it will be hard to choose a favorite as all these ladies are truly so incredibly talented.

AVON VOICES: THE NEXT 25

I think you may have seen me Tweet or comment about a very cool contest that’s going on right now called AVON VOICES. Basically, more than 6,000 women from 19 countries around the world submitted videos of themselves singing in hopes to win a shot at recording a professionally produced album. It’s a year-long global online singing talent search and today they announced the names of the 25 Semi-Finalist Contenders from 19 countries who will advance to the third round. These 25 come to Hollywood next week to record a professional video, get made over with AVON products and meet some of the celeb judges (Fergie, one my personal favorite Stiletto girls is one of the judges along with Andrea Jung who is one of the coolest women business execs in the world.)

Definitely check out some of the videos and get in on the process by registering to vote. It’s quite amazing to hear the different voices of women from all the around the world. And even though they don’t show their shoes in the videos, you know here at Miss Meghan Media we are all about anything that empowers women which Avon definitely does in a real way by making it possible for millions of women all over the world to run their own Avon businesses. We love a woman entrepreneur!

KATE MIDDLETON’S WEDDING SHOES

Of course, here at Miss Meghan we are far less interested in the dress, because we know it is all about the shoes.

Wedding shoes especially have a whole extra layered meaning on top of the typical psychological expression — this the day you want to feel extremely confident not in just how you look but how you feel. With Kate’s hectic schedule beginning at 10 am (getting ready I am sure many hours before) and ending probably in the wee hours the next morning at Prince Harrys after-party, it’s been rumored that Kate is going to have up to four different shoe looks the day of her wedding, among other shoe tidbits.

We checked in with Nikki Pennie, a friend of Kate’s who was the one who introduced her to Daniella Helayel of ISSA (the designer of the stunning blue gown she wore on her engagement day). Nikki is an emerging stylist here in Los Angeles and has travelled back to London for the wedding. “I can imagine that she will definitely have two changes; one for Abbey, then another one for the evening occasion and maybe a third for the post dinner party. I am sure with each outfit change she will obviously opt for different shoes to match each.” Smart girl I would say, choosing her Stiletto Strategies wisely.

“I definitely think Kate’s shoe choice today will reflect this modern and chic, fresh style sensibility. Kate’s style always remain classic and beautifully understated, just as her choice of shoes do. I think Kate will opt for a certain type of court shoe throughout the day. Also comfort is extremly important to her style esthetic, thats why you never see her in painfully high heels! This will be extremely important for her at the wedding; to be comfortable so she can enjoy herself and have the best day of her life. She is also fortunate to be lovely and tall.” I probed Nikkie a little further noting that we don’t see Kate in very outre or outlandish styles — does Nikki think one she is formally princess that will change and she’ll get a little experimental? What she said reflects what seems to be the universal feeling about Kate Middleton — that she is a steady, consistent woman with a lot of class, “I don’t think the future Princess will change in any way after the wedding… this also applies to her choice of shoe!” Stay tuned. . . .

FOOTWEAR HITS THE STAGE IN DANCE MUSICAL SHOES

The global obsession with footwear hasn’t taken so much as a pause despite the retail downturn of the last two years. In fact, it has grown even stronger across all price points. From Payless collaborations with Christian Siriano and Lela Rose to luxury designers Behnaz Kanani and Mai Lamore making shoe creations in the $5,000 to 10,000 range, the international obsession with shoes shows no sign of abating. And now the industry has its first crossover hit with SHOES, a new dance musical, which opened in London’s West End last week.

Featuring song and dance numbers ranging from “The Stiletto” to “Vex in the City” to the aptly titled “Salvatore Ferragamo,” the production is poised to continue to elevate footwear’s current cultural status. A slew of designers contributed to the musical, from Georgina Goodman to the legendary Thierry de Havilland, Beatrix Ong, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tracey Neuls, Joseph Azagury, Oliver Sweeney and Rob Goodwin, to name just a few.

Igniting the London shoe design community, designers weighed in on the importance of this production in the minds of women, fashion consumers and the footwear industry itself. Georgina Goodman, for instance, loved the enticing physicality of the production: “It is amazing! The dancers are mesmerizing, so strong, fluid and powerful; a pure celebration of just how inexplicable is our love of shoes.” Beatrix Ong noted, ” I’m quite used to working out my sketches to become a shoe, but working out a giant one for a musical stage that had to function on so many levels was really exciting. I’m really proud to have been a part of it.” Rob Goodwin, meanwhile, zeroed in on the lust the show uncovers, “The show taps into the obsession that many women have for their shoes, which can sometimes border on the insane. It manages to do this in a celebratory way without insulting the shoe industry or its customers, reinforcing the prestige of great brands and introduces newer names to an interested audience. It shines a big welcome spotlight on our world.” Designer Tracy Neuls remarked, “Sometimes design can be taken too seriously in an elitist way and I think the approach to SHOES is appropriately humorous.”

Joseph Azagury felt the show highlighted the growing centrality footwear occupies in the wardrobe. “Shoes have become more of a statement of expression rather than an accessory,” he noted. Poppy Watson who is an ex-dancer and the marketing director at Oliver Sweeney commented, “the show raises the visibility of the footwear industry through the very fact that it’s on, and the work they have done for the show. It also shows that passion for shoes is something that everyone has . . . part of everyone’s life.”

Written and composed by Richard Thomas, who is best known for his work Jerry Springer: The Opera, and choreographed by a team led by Stephan Mears, the Sadler’s Wells performance is a departure from its usual fare. However, after Richard’s powerful 15-minute pitch leading with the one simple word (“Shoes!”), Alistair Spaulding, the director of acclaimed dance centre Sadlers Wells, greenlit the show immediately and went forward full force. Noted Ong: “It’s very difficult in any project to do with shoes that isn’t going to be contrived. But Richard nailed it. The show is amazing: beautiful, funny and surprisingly emotional in parts, with original songs and performances by an excellent cast.” Stay tuned for more footwear fantasy. We’re sure TV shows, iPhone apps and more will start to ignite the shoe landscape.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHOES!

So we got a question from a dear reader by the name of Halle down in Del Mar, who had such a good question I decided to write a post about it. Halle is having a fantabulous 40th birthday celebration and is wearing a gorgeous, fun, Alice + Olivia dress (pictured). She is in a quandary about what shoes + tights to wear and was contemplating going with black and black. To you Halle, I say NOOOOOO! You are the belle of the ball that night I think you should sparkle and shine as much as possible! This means sheer metallic tights and a sparkle in your stiletto! Or leopard tights and a nude Stiletto!

Halle also thinks that because she has size 11 feet her options are limited — NOT SO! There are so many amazing shoe designers and shoe stores making gorgeous styles for size 11 and above!

My suggestions below!!

For shoes – many options!

I love these super sparkly JRenees — they are one of the last shoe companies who actually manufacture in the U.S. and the quality is great. This silhouette is a classic evening stiletto with a lot of sparkle and shine in sequins and bejewelments.

Or you could do a buff nude peep toe — this one is in a matte satin, and you could add an Absolutely Audrey shoe clip

Samanta is a great line that has been making size 11 and up shoe for years:

These Miu Miu’s I think would be ABSOLUTELY adorable. Hidden platform and a gorgeous toe box.

Or even these Manolo’s .

For tights there are so many options out there right now — look for something textured in the cream, white, nude tones, with a metallic element to it, or maybe just a cool pattern (see the snake pattern I love those) or an opaque open weave fishnet and let your shoes do the sparkle.

These might be the exact tights or shoes for you but you get the picture!! Mix it up a bit, let yourself shine shine shine for your birthday and be open to some different colors and textures and jewelly bits!

Woot! Happy Birthday Halle! you are going to look gorgeous!
