href="http://www.shipserv.com/info/wp-content/uploads/online_survey_2012.png"><img
class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-12626" title="online_survey_2012_infographic"
Click on thumbnail left to download infographic of results

The 3rd annual survey looks at digital use in the shipping industry amongst leading shipowners, shipmanagers and major suppliers with the aim of building an understanding of how trends in business-to-business e-commerce and social media are impacting the maritime sector.

The results of this year’s survey show a continued general trend to increased internet activity through e-commerce with over 25% of companies surveyed now completing all their purchasing activity – both sourcing and buying – over the internet – an increase of 10% from 2011.

But a lack of understanding still exists about the use of the internet in the shipping industry and alarmingly over 40% of companies are not measuring the success of their activity in either an online or offline capacity.

The survey’s key findings were as follows:

Many more maritime buyers and suppliers are using the internet to both source and transact, with significant (15%) increase in usage between 2011 and 2012;

More than 40% of respondents said that they currently didn’t measure the success or otherwise of their internet activity;

Respondents still think faster transaction speed was greatest benefit of doing business over internet and 80% think e-commerce use will grow over next 12 months;

The use of social media platforms continues to grow with over 50% respondents increasing their use in last 12 months, but a quarter of respondents surveyed said they currently didn’t use social media in a business capacity;

LinkedIn is the most popular social media platform for shipping companies and suppliers with 65% of respondents having a company profile

45% of respondents said senior management had little or no interest in social media

Mark Warner, Business Development Director, ShipServ, said:

“The use of the internet as a business tool to either advertise, source or buy maritime products and services has continued to grow as more companies become more familiar with using online as a purchasing medium.

However, it is noticeable from the survey that not all companies are actually measuring this activity, which seems bizarre given that analytical tools such as web analytics and purpose built dashboards such as ShipServ’s Supplier Insight Report can provide real insight into actual return on investment.”

The survey collected responses from executives from the world’s leading shipowners, managers and suppliers and included online and offline versions that were distributed at recent industry events such as SMM and IMPA.

In other key findings, the survey noted that social media use has increased, but doubts still remain over its use as a business tool with little backing from senior management.

Mr Warner said:

“In past surveys, social media has often been described as a ‘waste of time’ but the last year has seen a real shift in opinion and this has been helped by noticeable campaigns by leading shipping companies such as Maersk and Teekay. However, there are still sceptics over the usefulness of social media in the industry and this is highlighted by a lack of support from senior management.”

The full results of the survey are now available as an infographic and can be downloaded at TradeNet platform in the last month.

Bergen-based Utkilen, Wilson Ship Management, Seatrans and Solstad Offshore will all go live with the ability to receive e-invoices from connected suppliers.

In addition to the Norwegian owners, a further five major ship suppliers including leading ship chandlers EMS and HMS have recently also signed up to use the e-invoicing service.

Over the last few months, thousands of invoices have been successfully transferred through the platform using an MTML translation service, with many more suppliers and buyers set to come on stream over the next few months.

By using e-invoicing, buyers are able to process invoices quicker into their back-office system, and align with purchase orders and eliminate manual errors.

It gives buyers the ability to replace a paper or PDF invoice sent from their supplier with an electronic document capable of loading directly into their purchasing/accounting system.

One of the key benefits of the e-invoicing solution for a buyer is that it provides 24/7 visibility on all its received invoices so a purchasing manager can see exactly when an invoice has entered the system and its progress through the system.

“It makes real sense for us to offer e-invoicing as we can seamlessly integrate it with all our other services such as the KPI reporting dashboard so it gives clients complete transaction visibility, and means that they no longer have to use a stand-alone electronic scanning solution,” said TradeNet and Pages, proving that purchasing managers are continuing to use the industry’s leading standard to source products.

ShipServ and IMPA have been collaborating since 2001, when the e-commerce provider started offering the IMPA Marine Stores Guide to use in its onboard electronic Catalogue tool and this relationship was strengthened last year, when the use of the IMPA Code was extended to online supplier directory ShipServ Pages to simplify and speed up product sourcing even further.

Under the agreement officially signed at the IMPA conference in London in September, IMPA product codes are now displayed automatically to purchasing managers using ShipServ Pages to source suppliers.

“The fact that we see continued growth in the use of IMPA codes on both TradeNet and Pages illustrates the importance of data quality when sourcing products by using the industry’s recognised standard. We will continue to work closely with IMPA to ensure that purchasing managers see the full benefits of using the IMPA code,” said Kim Skaarup, Chief Operating Officer of ShipServ.

Buyers save time in locating specific parts or products when using either Pages or TradeNet by automatically-suggesting IMPA codes for product searches. Buyers can also use the IMPA code where known, to search for specific products directly.

The use of ShipServ Pages continued to grow dramatically in 2011 with over one million visitors coming to the site to source supplies from over 38,000 ship suppliers – a 72% rise in traffic from 2010.
