I&#39;ve recently become addicted to a brilliant American podcast called &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.filmspotting.net/&quot;&gt;Filmspotting&lt;/a&gt;. What I particularly enjoy is that its presenters Adam Kempenaar and Matty Robinson aren&#39;t afraid to admit when they&#39;ve never seen a so-called classic. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the show&#39;s regular features is its &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.filmspotting.net/marathons.html&quot;&gt;&#39;marathons&#39;&lt;/a&gt; wherein Adam and Matty spend five weeks watching films on a particular theme. When I started listening they here half-way through their &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.filmspotting.net/marathons/591-powell-pressburger-the-archers.html&quot;&gt;Powell-Pressburger&lt;/a&gt; marathon. I don&#39;t think the pair had seen any of these classics. I&#39;&#39;m slightly embarrassed to admit that neither have I. That got me thinking about other apparently great films I really should have seen by now. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Here&#39;s my top ten unseen classics.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037558/&quot;&gt;Brief Encounter (1945)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
One of the most loved and most parodied British films of all time. I really should find out what all the fuss is about.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/&quot;&gt;Night of the Living Dead (1968)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Th only Romero film I have seen is &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082622/&quot;&gt;Knightriders&lt;/a&gt;!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069293/&quot;&gt;Solaris (1972)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I struggled with the 90 minute remake so I&#39;m not convinced I can hack Tarkovsky&#39;s three-hour original.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041546/&quot;&gt;Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)&lt;/a&gt; &lt;br /&gt;
I don&#39;t think I&#39;ve seen any classic Ealing comedies.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023969/&quot;&gt;Duck Soup (1933)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Ditto Marx Brothers films&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046438/&quot;&gt;Tokyo Story (1953)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I meant to see this at the BFI when it was recently re-released and it is in my LOVEFiLM queue so that&#39;s a start.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035015/&quot;&gt;The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I&#39;ve seen Citizen Kane a lot but never Orson Welles&#39; other early classic. I think I&#39;ve been put off knowing that the definitive version does not exist though it still appears in critics list so I should take a look.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040522/&quot;&gt;Bicycle Thieves (1938)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A film that is always on greatest films lists and one I&#39;ve been meaning to watch for at least 18 years.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061811/&quot;&gt;In the Heat of the Night (1967)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t26zf&quot;&gt;Rich Hall&#39;s recent BBC Four documentary&lt;/a&gt; about the portrayal of the South in the movies reminded me that I&#39;ve never seen Sidney Poitier&#39;s first outing as Detective Virgil Tibbs.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050825/&quot;&gt;Paths of Glory (1957)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Some claim it&#39;s greatest war film ever made. I wouldn&#39;t know.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076666/&quot;&gt;Saturday Night Fever (1977)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
This final pick is inspired by a conversation I heard on Filmspotting that argued that Saturday Night Fever should be regarded as a serious film rather than a piece of kitsch. I&#39;d like to have an opinion on the matter. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That&#39;s my list, what&#39;s yours? Which films have you heard are brilliant, have never seen, but feel you should have?&lt;br /&gt;

One of things about America that never fails to surprise me is the extent to which advertisers are allowed to diss or comment on their competition. Normally this is simply along the lines of &lt;a href=&quot;http://www1.duracell.com/uk/&quot;&gt;Duracell&lt;/a&gt; is better than &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.energizer.com/&quot;&gt;Energizer&lt;/a&gt; but there&#39;s a remarkable &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bk.com/&quot;&gt;Burger King&lt;/a&gt; ad I&#39;ve seen a few times this week that takes corporate rivalry to new levels.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In it the sinister-looking Burger King turns &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv3y4ceOn1Q&quot;&gt;Hamburglar&lt;/a&gt; and breaks into &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.mcdonalds.com/&quot;&gt;McDonald&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; HQ to steal their breakfast muffin recipe so BK can sell an identical product. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;object width=&quot;480&quot; height=&quot;385&quot;&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;movie&quot; value=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/ZF86Rb-uFNE&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowFullScreen&quot; value=&quot;true&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowscriptaccess&quot; value=&quot;always&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;embed src=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/ZF86Rb-uFNE&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot; type=&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash&quot; allowscriptaccess=&quot;always&quot; allowfullscreen=&quot;true&quot; width=&quot;480&quot; height=&quot;385&quot;&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you can&#39;t beat &#39;em, join &#39;em I guess. Are any other adverts so audacious?</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2010/04/burger-king-master-criminal.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7384239290902310866.post-790256181998405595</guid><pubDate>Wed, 17 Feb 2010 13:22:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-02-17T13:22:16.995+00:00</atom:updated><category domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">film club</category><title>LA Stories #2: Mildred Pierce</title><description>&lt;div class=&quot;separator&quot; style=&quot;clear: both; text-align: center;&quot;&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.milliondollartheater.com/MildredPierceModF.jpg&quot; imageanchor=&quot;1&quot; style=&quot;margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;&quot;&gt;&lt;img border=&quot;0&quot; height=&quot;312&quot; src=&quot;http://www.milliondollartheater.com/MildredPierceModF.jpg&quot; width=&quot;400&quot; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Following our film club&#39;s inaugural &lt;a href=&quot;http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2010/01/los-angeles-on-film.html&quot;&gt;screening last month of Chintaown&lt;/a&gt;, Jo and I continued our LA Stories season on Tuesday with 40s noir-melodrama &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037913/%20&quot;&gt;Mildred Pierce&lt;/a&gt;. It&#39;s one of those classic films I&#39;ve shamefully never seen. &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Crawford&quot;&gt;Joan Crawford&lt;/a&gt; won an Oscar for her performance as the suburban housewife who&#39;ll seemingly do anything for her daughters. Yesterday it was officially announced that &lt;a href=&quot;http://classicfilm.about.com/b/2010/02/16/winslet-to-star-as-mildred-pierce.htm&quot;&gt;Kate Winslet will now play the role in an HBO mini series&lt;/a&gt; written and directed by &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001331/%20&quot;&gt;Todd Haynes&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Here&#39;s the original trailer:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;object height=&quot;344&quot; width=&quot;425&quot;&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;movie&quot; value=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/mNoKOczx2lE&amp;amp;hl=en_GB&amp;amp;fs=1&amp;amp;&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowFullScreen&quot; value=&quot;true&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowscriptaccess&quot; value=&quot;always&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;embed src=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/mNoKOczx2lE&amp;amp;hl=en_GB&amp;amp;fs=1&amp;amp;&quot; type=&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash&quot; allowscriptaccess=&quot;always&quot; allowfullscreen=&quot;true&quot; width=&quot;425&quot; height=&quot;344&quot;&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I loved it. It looks great - all expressionist black and white; the dialogue is especially juicy (&lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Faulkner&quot;&gt;William Faulkner&lt;/a&gt; was one of the writers) and &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Steiner&quot;&gt;Max Steiner&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; score is brilliant. By coincidence we saw &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000466/&quot;&gt;Jean-Pierre Jeunet&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; new film &lt;a href=&quot;http://http//www.imdb.com/title/tt1149361/&quot;&gt;Micmacs&lt;/a&gt; on Sunday which reuses lot of Steiner&#39;s old film music, Inglorious Basterds style, to excellent effect.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;div class=&quot;separator&quot; style=&quot;clear: both; text-align: center;&quot;&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Our shortlist of LA films is growing but I&#39;m still open to suggestions if you have any.</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2010/02/la-stories-2-mildred-pierce.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7384239290902310866.post-8691894239661140138</guid><pubDate>Sat, 30 Jan 2010 09:46:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-01-30T11:22:13.548+00:00</atom:updated><category domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">film</category><category domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">John Shuttleworth</category><category domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">Martin Parr</category><title>A Martin Parr Double Bill</title><description>&lt;a onblur=&quot;try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}&quot; href=&quot;http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/blogon/upload/2006/07/martin_parr.jpg&quot;&gt;&lt;img style=&quot;display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 382px;&quot; src=&quot;http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/blogon/upload/2006/07/martin_parr.jpg&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I love &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.martinparr.com&quot;&gt;Martin Parr&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; photographs. They are accessible, funny but always leave you thinking. Just before Christmas I went to the massive &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.balticmill.com/whatsOn/past/ExhibitionDetail.php?exhibID=130&quot;&gt;Parrworld&lt;/a&gt; exhibition at the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.balticmill.com/index.php&quot;&gt;Baltic in Gateshead&lt;/a&gt; which combined Parr&#39;s new portfolio &lt;a href=&quot;http://todayspictures.slate.com/20090629/&quot;&gt;Luxury&lt;/a&gt; with artifacts from his eccentric collection of postcards, photography books, prints and ephemera. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;object width=&quot;425&quot; height=&quot;344&quot;&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;movie&quot; value=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/h1cHf4WiRbk&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowFullScreen&quot; value=&quot;true&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowscriptaccess&quot; value=&quot;always&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;embed src=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/h1cHf4WiRbk&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot; type=&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash&quot; allowscriptaccess=&quot;always&quot; allowfullscreen=&quot;true&quot; width=&quot;425&quot; height=&quot;344&quot;&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As well Nazi Christmas decorations and Skegness At Night postcards, Martin Parr&#39;s films Think of England and It&#39;s Nice Up North were also on show. There&#39;s never time at a gallery to sit through full-length videos so I bought both films on DVD and got round to watching them last night.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It&#39;s_Nice_Up_North&quot;&gt;It&#39;s Nice Up North&lt;/a&gt; is a vehicle for &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Fellows&quot;&gt;Graham Fellows&#39;&lt;/a&gt; alter-ego &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.shuttleworths.co.uk/&quot;&gt;John Shuttleworth&lt;/a&gt; and charts the versatile Sheffield singer-songwriter&#39;s trip to the Shetland Islands to test his theory that people are nicer the further north you go in the UK. This clip is from early on and sets the tone for what follows. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;object width=&quot;560&quot; height=&quot;340&quot;&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;movie&quot; value=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/qeJh-jzSNx8&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowFullScreen&quot; value=&quot;true&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowscriptaccess&quot; value=&quot;always&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;embed src=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/qeJh-jzSNx8&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot; type=&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash&quot; allowscriptaccess=&quot;always&quot; allowfullscreen=&quot;true&quot; width=&quot;560&quot; height=&quot;340&quot;&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;None of &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.screenonline.org.uk/tv/id/440338/index.html&quot;&gt;Think of England&lt;/a&gt; is on YouTube but &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.martinparr.com/index1.html&quot;&gt;Martin Parr&#39;s website&lt;/a&gt; has three excellent clips. It&#39;s a state of the nation essay made in 1999 for the BBC&#39;s lamented Modern Times strand. Parr turns his camera on village fete cake contests, seaside resort boozers and people picnicking at service stations creating imagery that&#39;s often like &lt;a href=&quot;http://ecomm.davidlynch.com/&quot;&gt;David Lynch&lt;/a&gt; on a English coach trip. It&#39;s a brilliant and entertaining combination of the satirical edge that&#39;s in a lot of Parr&#39;s photos and a more sober look at attitudes about Englishness. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In It&#39;s Nice Up North Shuttleworth occasionally complains about Martin&#39;s &quot;arty&quot; shots. I&#39;d say both films are works of art - but the kind that also makes perfect Friday night viewing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:bold;&quot;&gt;Buy the DVDs&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://mosaicfilms.com/2007/11/think-of-england-bbc-21999.php&quot;&gt;Thing of England &amp; Martin Parr Short films - Mosaic Films&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000FS9OU4?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=B000FS9OU4&quot;&gt;It&#39;s Nice Up North - Amazon&lt;/a&gt;&lt;img src=&quot;http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=carnisaloo-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=B000FS9OU4&quot; width=&quot;1&quot; height=&quot;1&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; style=&quot;border:none !important; margin:0px !important;&quot; /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:bold;&quot;&gt;Related Links&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.martinparr.com&quot;&gt;Martin Parr&lt;/a&gt; - official site&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.shuttleworths.co.uk/&quot;&gt;John Shuttleworth&lt;/a&gt; - official site&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.screenonline.org.uk/tv/id/440338/index.html&quot;&gt;Think of England&lt;/a&gt; - short essay on the BFI website</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2010/01/martin-parr-double-bill.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7384239290902310866.post-1210477691774366137</guid><pubDate>Sat, 23 Jan 2010 10:15:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-01-23T10:48:41.853+00:00</atom:updated><category domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">film club</category><title>Los Angeles on Film</title><description>Last year my colleague Richard told me that every month he and some friends gather to watch a movie based on an a theme that&#39;s agreed at the start if each year. It&#39;s a great idea and in 2009 their theme was &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.clinteastwood.net/welcome/&quot;&gt;Clint Eastwood&lt;/a&gt;. They didn&#39;t see &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066819/&quot;&gt;The Beguiled&lt;/a&gt; but did sit through &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0186566/&quot;&gt;Space Cowboys&lt;/a&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inspired by Richard and his pals I thought I&#39;d initiate my own monthly film club with a membership of two. The simple aim to is to watch movies that Jo and I either have never seen or haven&#39;t seen for a long time. Our inugaural theme is &#39;Los Angeles&#39; and last night we enjoyed &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071315/&quot;&gt;Chinatown&lt;/a&gt;, probably one of they best films set in the LA. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;object width=&quot;425&quot; height=&quot;344&quot;&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;movie&quot; value=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/3aifeXlnoqY&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowFullScreen&quot; value=&quot;true&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;param name=&quot;allowscriptaccess&quot; value=&quot;always&quot;&gt;&lt;/param&gt;&lt;embed src=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/3aifeXlnoqY&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot; type=&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash&quot; allowscriptaccess=&quot;always&quot; allowfullscreen=&quot;true&quot; width=&quot;425&quot; height=&quot;344&quot;&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now I&#39;m after suggestions for what other Los Angeles films we should watch. I already have plenty of ideas and keep looking over this &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.twotreatises.org/409&quot;&gt;huge list of movies&lt;/a&gt; that feature in Thom Andersen&#39;s brilliant documentary &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.reverseshot.com/legacy/summer04/andersen.html&quot;&gt;Los Angeles Plays Itself&lt;/a&gt;, but if you have favourites you think we must watch please leave a comment below. I fell in love with them shortly after moving to London as a student ten years ago. Their resolute stance against all prevailing fashion certainly appealed but I&#39;d be lying if I said it wasn&#39;t their remarkable £1.60-a-pint pricing policy that kept me going back to places like the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/65/657/&quot;&gt;Chandos&lt;/a&gt; off Trafalgar Square and the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/70/703/Fitzroy_Tavern/Fitzrovia&quot;&gt;Fitzroy Tavern&lt;/a&gt; on Charlotte Street.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other than regularly boring people with the great bit of pub trivia that Samuel Smith was &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.johnsmiths.co.uk/&quot;&gt;John Smith&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; cousin I&#39;ve rarely given much thought to the company that brews Britain&#39;s cheapest pint but &lt;a href=&quot;http://petebrown.blogspot.com/&quot;&gt;Pete Brown&lt;/a&gt; makes some interesting observations about them in his new book &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0230706355?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0230706355&quot;&gt;Hops and Glory&lt;/a&gt;. It&#39;s part history of India Pale Ale and part travelogue of Pete&#39;s attempt to recreate the voyage that took IPA halfway across the world to quench the thirsts of sozzled expats. Before coming up with that idea though Pete considered writing a piece of investigative journalism about Sam Smith&#39;s.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&#39;ve enjoyed Pete&#39;s previous beery books, &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0330412205?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0330412205&quot;&gt;Man Walks Into a Pub&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href=&quot;ttp://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0330442473?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0330442473&quot;&gt;Three Sheets to the Wind&lt;/a&gt;. Not only are they entertainmgly written they&#39;re also full of quotable nuggets I can&#39;t help but bother Joanne with. Ten pages into Hops and Glory I stopped to read this out aloud: &quot;If Willy Wonka had been into beer instead of chocolate, he would have been called Samuel Smith&quot;. Pete sums up Sam Smith&#39;s pubs perfectly:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Sam Smith&#39;s pubs are cultish in both commonly used senses of the word. They look like they haven&#39;t been decorated since the 1970s, but not in a bad way. They only stock their own brands of everything. They don&#39;t advertise. They don&#39;t talk to writers or journalists, even those who love them. They don&#39;t even have a website&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What really interested Pete about Sam Smith&#39;s though was &quot;why are they so secretive. What they&#39;ve got to hide. How they come to own so many pubs in London, given that they&#39;re based in Yorkshire and these pubs must be worth a fortune.&quot; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&#39;m halfway through Hops and Glory and glad that Pete chose IPA as his subject rather than Sammy Smith&#39;s. Still, I&#39;d now really like to know the answers to those questions, wouldn&#39;t you?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:bold;&quot;&gt;Related Posts&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2007/11/three-sheets-to-wind.html&quot;&gt;Three Sheets to the Wind&lt;/a&gt; - piece I wrote about Pete&#39;s previous book on my other blog, Carnival Saloon&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:bold;&quot;&gt;Related Links&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://petebrown.blogspot.com/&quot;&gt;Pete Brown&#39;s Beer Blog&lt;/a&gt; - worth reading even if you&#39;re teetotal&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0230706355?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0230706355&quot;&gt;Amazon: Hops and Glory&lt;/a&gt;&lt;img src=&quot;http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=carnisaloo-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=0230706355&quot; width=&quot;1&quot; height=&quot;1&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; style=&quot;border:none !important; margin:0px !important;&quot; /&gt;- buy Pete&#39;s excellent new book&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0330442473?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0330442473&quot;&gt;Amazon: Three Sheets to the Wind&lt;/a&gt;&lt;img src=&quot;http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=carnisaloo-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=0330442473&quot; width=&quot;1&quot; height=&quot;1&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; style=&quot;border:none !important; margin:0px !important;&quot; /&gt;- Pete&#39;s beer world tour&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0330412205?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0330412205&quot;&gt;Amazon: Man Walks into a Pub&lt;/a&gt;&lt;img src=&quot;http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=carnisaloo-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=2&amp;a=0330412205&quot; width=&quot;1&quot; height=&quot;1&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; style=&quot;border:none !important; margin:0px !important;&quot; /&gt;- enlightening (and funny) history of the British boozer&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.jamesgretton.co.uk/samuelsmiths&quot;&gt;Sam Smith&#39;s London Pub Map&lt;/a&gt; - where to find a pint of Old Brewery</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2009/07/mysteries-of-samuel-smiths.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/" url="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw0gB52SqqfU_eERA8qo2oDS5vmdcppsbi9WNXxdt8UvReqvVRa48sEHppt7tx9C8U7JV4ojxI3mffn4d3slmkCwdbX7WdDK3kCQbrhBnt9LKXnTCiFPkjzHiPva0hINC0YMudS9rWloQ/s72-c/samsmiths.jpg" height="72" width="72"/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7384239290902310866.post-4447120042960953708</guid><pubDate>Mon, 06 Jul 2009 18:31:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2009-07-06T19:46:42.976+01:00</atom:updated><category domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">Hell in a Handcart</category><title>Even A Freak Deserves Better Than This</title><description>Joanne will tell you that I&#39;m forever pointing out evidence that the world&#39;s going to hell in a handcart. Not only does it usually make me laugh out loud each week it&#39;s also an essential weapon in defending America against two common complaints from my fellow countrymen a) Americans are stupid; b) Americans &quot;don&#39;t do irony&quot;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of late though I have been disappointed that &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.theonion.com/&quot;&gt;The Onion&lt;/a&gt; seem unable to really satirise &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.barackobama.com/&quot;&gt;Barack Obama&lt;/a&gt;. Whereas George Bush and his neon-con cronies were a humorist&#39;s dream all The Onion seem willing to mock the new President for is being a nerd. For example:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.theonion.com/content/news/obama_depressed_distant_since&quot;&gt;Obama Depressed, Distant Since &#39;Battlestar Galactica&#39; Series Finale&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.theonion.com/content/news/obama_disappointed_cabinet_failed&quot;&gt;Obama Disappointed Cabinet Failed To Understand His Reference To &#39;Savage Sword Of Conan&#39; #24&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I thought about this as I finished reading &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Vowell&quot;&gt;Sarah Vowell&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; book &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0241142067?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=carnisaloo-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=19450&amp;creativeASIN=0241142067&quot;&gt;The Partly Cloudy Patriot&lt;/a&gt; at the weekend. In her essay The Nerd Voice she says, &quot;What we need is a president who is at least twelve kinds of nerd, a nerd messiah to come along every four years, acquire the Secret Service code name nickname Poindexter, install a Revenge of the Nerds screen saver on the Oval Office computer, and one by one decrypt our woes.&quot; The book came out in 2002 and that sentence now reads like a prophecy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the heart of the essay is Vowell&#39;s regret that Al Gore denied &quot;his innate nerdiness&quot; because the press favoured Dubya&#39;s jock image to Gore&#39;s smarty-pants geek. What America needed, Vowell correctly asserts, is a leader who knows a lot of stuff in great details and not a failed oilman whose favourite book is The Very Hungry Caterpillar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the end of the essay Vowell writes that&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;I wish that in order to secure his party&#39;s nomination, a presidential candidate would be required to point at the sky and name all the start; have the periodic table of the elements memorized; rattle off the kings and queens of Spain; define the significance of the Gatling gun; joke around in Latin; interpret the symbolism of 17th-century Dutch painting; explain photosynthesis to a six-year-old; recite Emily Dickinson; bake a perfect popover*; build a shortwave radio out of coconut; and know all the words to Hoagy Carmichael&#39;s Two Sleepy People, Johnny Cash&#39;s Five Feet High and Rising, and You Got the Silver by the Rolling Stones...&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have tracked &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2008/10/super-obama.html&quot;&gt;Obama&#39;s geek appeal&lt;/a&gt; for some time and read his two books. From this brief survey I have no doubt that the president can complete 90% of those tasks; his upbringing in Hawaii certainly gives him an advantage when it comes to coconuts. I guess time will tell if an in-depth knowledge of Spider-Man comics is an advantage in dealing with Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and the worst economy in living memory.</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2009/06/president-poindexter.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/" url="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbdFFa40DaXdw0JyJ2b3wML8AFqBGAtp65LZY_K71kA-Fk6MQJ_CUgxLaDOASQut7MZOs8RQoosNMBjd0hOcEdhMIj8W16SgClwec_FzcftV18Ux5nfypmghvmNfHp_rN7RleE49IH2mc/s72-c/barak-obama-spiderman.jpg" height="72" width="72"/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7384239290902310866.post-5364545925339264218</guid><pubDate>Wed, 10 Jun 2009 11:41:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2009-06-10T13:25:34.023+01:00</atom:updated><category domain="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#">Pub Quiz</category><title>What I Learnt At The Pub Quiz Last Night</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur=&quot;try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}&quot; href=&quot;https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitejItDtQNYqrR6W80kOy63qzFOM0rDeOGvRE2IBXtbNTdLi8M_2L6OYeS2ZwYbSZVShbYToPbTA-rJu0YE3OpXQwBhYyL7uPGxwDpm2LADwLO2YrZK-7ukRSTjjXKTen2Vpad_hlYDM4/s1600-h/tippi.jpg&quot;&gt;&lt;img style=&quot;display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;&quot; src=&quot;https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitejItDtQNYqrR6W80kOy63qzFOM0rDeOGvRE2IBXtbNTdLi8M_2L6OYeS2ZwYbSZVShbYToPbTA-rJu0YE3OpXQwBhYyL7uPGxwDpm2LADwLO2YrZK-7ukRSTjjXKTen2Vpad_hlYDM4/s400/tippi.jpg&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;&quot;id=&quot;BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345672489460608322&quot; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My team, Jossy&#39;s Giants, enjoyed a famous victory at the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.dartmoutharms.co.uk/&quot;&gt;Dartmouth Arms&lt;/a&gt; quiz last night. With a strong showing that put us in the top spot after the first six rounds we stumbled on the picture round, failing to identify the country of origin of any Scandinavian newspapers. So, with all to play for in the final 15 general knowledge questions we played a blinder of combined team brain power and triumphed with a six-point lead. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We didn&#39;t get all the answers right though. Things I learn last night include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_Summer_Olympics&quot;&gt;cancelled 1940 Olympic Games&lt;/a&gt; was scheduled for Tokyo (not Paris)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippi_Hedren&quot;&gt;Tippi Hedren&lt;/a&gt; is &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanie_Griffith&quot;&gt;Melanie Griffith&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; mother (not &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_Leigh&quot;&gt;Janet Leigh&lt;/a&gt;, she&#39;s &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Lee_Curtis&quot;&gt;Jamie Lee Curtis&#39;&lt;/a&gt; mum, though I knew there was a Hitchcock connection)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;Flowers in the Rain, the &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Radio_1#First_broadcast&quot;&gt;first song played on Radio 1&lt;/a&gt; is by &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Move&quot;&gt;the Move&lt;/a&gt; (not &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manfred_Mann&quot;&gt;Manfred Mann&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carthage&quot;&gt;Carthage&lt;/a&gt; is on the site of modern-day &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunis&quot;&gt;Tunis&lt;/a&gt; (and not &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algiers&quot;&gt;Algiers&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We were robbed of two points. Answering &quot;What&#39;s the name of Barbie&#39;s sister?&quot; we went for &quot;Skipper&quot;. The answer given was Shelly but looking at this thorough &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.dolls4play.com/barbiehistory.html&quot;&gt;Barbie history website&lt;/a&gt; it looks like were were right. Sadly, Rule 2 at the Dartmouth Arms is that &quot;the quizmaster is always right&quot;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My favourite wrong answer from those I marked was the team that thought Hercules was the name of the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.guardian.co.uk/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-22428,00.html&quot;&gt;Duke of Wellington&#39;s horse&lt;/a&gt;. They&#39;d confused the Waterloo warrior&#39;s steed with &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steptoe_and_Son&quot;&gt;Steptoe and Son&#39;s&lt;/a&gt; nag.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We&#39;ll be defending our crown in two weeks time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:bold;&quot;&gt;Related Links&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.dartmoutharms.co.uk/&quot;&gt;The Dartmouth Arms&lt;/a&gt;</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2009/06/what-i-learnt-at-quiz-last-night.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/" url="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitejItDtQNYqrR6W80kOy63qzFOM0rDeOGvRE2IBXtbNTdLi8M_2L6OYeS2ZwYbSZVShbYToPbTA-rJu0YE3OpXQwBhYyL7uPGxwDpm2LADwLO2YrZK-7ukRSTjjXKTen2Vpad_hlYDM4/s72-c/tippi.jpg" height="72" width="72"/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7384239290902310866.post-2749380653167540490</guid><pubDate>Wed, 03 Jun 2009 21:18:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2009-06-03T22:29:05.404+01:00</atom:updated><title>Meet The British</title><description>For a slice of nutty TV take a look at this brilliant documentary that&#39;s been on &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour&quot;&gt;BBC Four&lt;/a&gt; this week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kv0d0&quot;&gt;Meet the British&lt;/a&gt; is a compilation of clips from the 50s to 70s that the government produced to promote our fine nation to the rest of the world. A couple of Africans students marvelling at our efficient bus service(even in rural areas), an introduction to Cockney ryming slang and the wonders of ready meals. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class=&quot;vidembed&quot; align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div id=&quot;b00kv0d0&quot; class=&quot;player&quot;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;embed id=&quot;bbc_emp_embed_b00kv0d0&quot; width=&quot;512&quot; height=&quot;323&quot; flashvars=&quot;domId=b00kv0d0&amp;config_settings_showFullScreenCta=false&amp;playlist=http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/playlist/b00kv0d0&amp;config=http://www.bbc.co.uk/emp/iplayer/config.xml&amp;config_settings_suppressCodec=h264&quot; piallowscriptaccess=&quot;always&quot; allowfullscreen=&quot;true&quot; wmode=&quot;default&quot; quality=&quot;high&quot; bgcolor=&quot;#000000&quot; name=&quot;bbc_emp_embed_b00kv0d0&quot; style=&quot;&quot; src=&quot;http://www.bbc.co.uk/emp/9player.swf?revision=7276_7623&quot; type=&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash&quot;/&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;script type=&quot;text/javascript&quot;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1&lt;br /&gt;2 var emp = new embeddedMedia.Player();&lt;br /&gt;3 emp.setWidth(&quot;512&quot;);&lt;br /&gt;4 emp.setHeight(&quot;323&quot;);emp.setDomId(&quot;b00kv0d0&quot;);&lt;br /&gt;5emp.set(&quot;config_settings_showFullScreenCta&quot;,&quot;false&quot;);&lt;br /&gt;6emp.setPlaylist(&quot;http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/playlist/b00kv0d0&quot;);&lt;br /&gt;7 emp.setConfig(&quot;http://www.bbc.co.uk/emp/iplayer/config.xml&quot;);&lt;br /&gt;8 emp.write();&lt;br /&gt;9&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/script&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:bold;&quot;&gt;Related Links&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kv0d0&quot;&gt;BBC Four - Meet the British&lt;/a&gt;</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2009/06/meet-british.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7384239290902310866.post-3138591531350205964</guid><pubDate>Fri, 29 May 2009 11:43:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2009-05-30T17:53:56.577+01:00</atom:updated><title>Welcome To My World</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur=&quot;try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}&quot; href=&quot;https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6a7HfO6IOo2tyZ6xm2DHZVm2ePRRE5ijx5uNEI_Yt4CKt95hSak5LNd8MrhB_HSW8gMBQcRS5VY6ZSUWTfCoFx45a6LJIzAAClmBjo4rUM5R3PJwxeYrtqx9_m_6a7KB2I1R6py1aAQ/s1600-h/nigel_boscos.jpg&quot;&gt;&lt;img style=&quot;display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;&quot; src=&quot;https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6a7HfO6IOo2tyZ6xm2DHZVm2ePRRE5ijx5uNEI_Yt4CKt95hSak5LNd8MrhB_HSW8gMBQcRS5VY6ZSUWTfCoFx45a6LJIzAAClmBjo4rUM5R3PJwxeYrtqx9_m_6a7KB2I1R6py1aAQ/s400/nigel_boscos.jpg&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;&quot;id=&quot;BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341657752336126562&quot; /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I started writing my first blog, &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/&quot;&gt;Carnival Saloon&lt;/a&gt;, in September 2007. At the time I was spending a lot of time at work explaining blogging best practice to various radio producers and presenters but not actually blogging myself. &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/&quot;&gt;Carnival Saloon&lt;/a&gt; was born to see if I could practice what I preached and give me an outlet to do some writing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2007/09/for-fraks-sake.html&quot;&gt;first post&lt;/a&gt; was about &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2007/09/for-fraks-sake.html&quot;&gt;Battlestar Galactica&lt;/a&gt;, the &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2007/09/rachel-unthank-devon-sproule.html&quot;&gt;second&lt;/a&gt; a &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2007/09/rachel-unthank-devon-sproule.html&quot;&gt;review of a Rachel Unthank gig&lt;/a&gt; and the &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2007/11/three-sheets-to-wind.html&quot;&gt;17th&lt;/a&gt; some &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2007/11/three-sheets-to-wind.html&quot;&gt;thoughts about beer&lt;/a&gt;. Pretty random stuff, but all things I was sufficiently interested in to want to write about. My friends seemed to enjoy this hodge-podge but it eventually became apparent that more people I didn&#39;t know were mainly looking at my music and MP3 posts. These were fun because the blog became more conversational and I challenged myself to post MP3s that might not be too common. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the bits of advice that I used to give would-be bloggers is stick to one thing and do it well. Taking my own medicine I decided to only write about music at &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/&quot;&gt;Carnival Saloon&lt;/a&gt; and turn it into a fully-fledged MP3 blog. That&#39;s worked very well in many respects. More people look at that blog each month but fewer of those are my friends who either don&#39;t care for banjos or would prefer to know what I think of the new &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.startrek.com/&quot;&gt;Star Trek&lt;/a&gt; film than hear a &lt;a href=&quot;http://carnivalsaloon.blogspot.com/2009/05/state-songs-15-indiana.html&quot;&gt;Phil Ochs&lt;/a&gt; track.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So here we are. A second blog for all the stuff I no longer write about at Carnival Saloon. You can expect occasional musings on such fascinating subjects as what I&#39;ve watched on TV, cooked for dinner, read before going to bed, learnt at the pub quiz and cursed the modern world for. With any luck this will be a spin-off more like &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frasier&quot;&gt;Frasier&lt;/a&gt; than &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_(TV_series)&quot;&gt;Joey&lt;/a&gt;. But I&#39;m making no promises.</description><link>http://shipsandcrowns.blogspot.com/2009/05/welcome-to-my-world.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Nigel Smith)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/" url="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz6a7HfO6IOo2tyZ6xm2DHZVm2ePRRE5ijx5uNEI_Yt4CKt95hSak5LNd8MrhB_HSW8gMBQcRS5VY6ZSUWTfCoFx45a6LJIzAAClmBjo4rUM5R3PJwxeYrtqx9_m_6a7KB2I1R6py1aAQ/s72-c/nigel_boscos.jpg" height="72" width="72"/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item></channel></rss>
