This is such an eloquent and simple essay by Einstein. His perception of life strikes me to be full of compassion and fierce wisdom. He brings us no sermons; he offers us some simple truths. Whenever I feel my heart is empty of hope and meaning, I often read his work. For someone possessed with outstanding genius, he appears very human, walking our common ground. He had the insight of the mystic and it's no real surprise that he valued solitude so much.

What does it take to be so content with the immediate present that one does not need to consider what lies behind or scant distant horizons?

If anyone understood the central core of meaning which transcends mundane reality, I'd bet my last dollar it would have been Einstein. He had the connection with the 'philosopher's gold', that nugget of meaning buried deep within earthly nature and human nature - that precious substance which is the alchemist's dream to uncover and release.
