Chestnut Anpan Bread

With Autumn comes a change in weather and a change in foods. Local stores start to serve different vegetables and there is a clear switch in menus. It is nice to have 4 seasons and be able to notice the distinct change in environment, whether it be visual or other senses. One notable example is chestnuts or “kuri”, 栗. Kuri in Japan is a much enjoyed autumn food source.

Kuri Anpan

Some people like to have kuri gohan, or chestnut rice. In this photo, you can see Kuri anpan, chestnut red bean paste bread. Maybe it sounds odd, but if you stick with the Japanese naming of kuri anpan and think just of sweet bread with chestnuts, you will enjoy the taste.

This one is being sold at a local Shinshindo Cafe, limited offer just for Autumn. If you have ever tasted Kuri Anpan tell, let me know your experience in the comments.

Biwako Golf

As we are now in Autumn and the weather gets a bit cooler I went out to play some golf. The course had a great view of Lake Biwa and although the fairways were very tight, it was nice to walk around the course looking at the views.

Not an easy first tee shot, but quite picturesque. The tracks in front of the tee ground that looks like train tracks are for the automated carts system. You have to walk around the course but your bags are carried by this.

This view and the days golf reminded me of a trip some time ago when I cycled around Lake Biwa in the spring time. Good memories.

The course is called Ojiyama Country Club which is part of the Rock Field Resort Group

Tokyo Station Water Park

The renovations on the west side of Tokyo Station are largely complete and families on the hot summer weekends get the chance to watch their children play in the water area. It gets a bit slippy and I saw quite a few children falling over but in the main everyone seemed to enjoy themselves without any major injuries.

Plenty of shade coming across from the buildings and a nice breeze blowing straight up from the Palace area. With the red bricks of Tokyo Station building in the background and the water feature, it makes for a nice rest area in the late afternoons.

The water park is only on during the summer months and certainly gives a matsuri feel to the area. Considering the millions of people moving about underneath and behind this area, the water park is almost acting like an oasis.

These type of open space architecture projects add a lot of charm to the city and bring people together.

New Waves for Ginza Line Entrance

The new entrance to the Ginza Line subway at Shibuya station gets some nice curvy-wavy overhead lines. Progress as the city moves forward, but I feel nostalgic for the old entrance where I had to jump up flights of stairs, squeeze past the stationery store and shoe repair kiosk to then find some more stairs for the platform. Always enjoy riding the Ginza Line. Feels like you are going somewhere posh.

Hello Kitty Airport Train

After a long flight home, its nice to be greeted with the friendly face of Hello Kitty as you board the train. Instead of contemplating a dirty carriage or worse, some graffiti, the clean image of Hello Kitty makes me feel society is organised and respectful of its communal property.

Capsule Hotel rest at Narita Airport

If you arrive early at Narita Airport for your flight, you can get a quick nap and a shower before you board the plane keeping you super fresh for the long flight ahead. I tried it out and really liked the design ambience. It had just the right mix of tech and relaxing feel. Has anyone else tried this at Narita Airport?

Sunflowers on Awajishima

Nice to be out in the sunshine for a bicycle ride on the island of Awajishima near Sumoto. I came across these wonderful sunflowers which brightened up the day.

City scenes

Autumn is always a nice time of the year for taking photos. Great colors, cooler weather. Lots of action. I have had a cold recently and so haven’t been too adventurous with my choice of landscape or camera. Here are some everyday scenes when out walking in the late afternoon.
