Cork Voted Top Destinationby Lonely Planet for 2010!

Cork has been voted a top 10 city destination for 2010 by The Lonely Planet!

This confirms what we have always believed at Sheila's Cork Hostel......

Here's what the Irish Times had to say on 03/11/09:

"CORK HAS been listed alongside cities in the US, Canada and Italy in a new Lonely Planet travel guide for the top places to visit in 2010.
The Best in Travel 2010 published this week is the travel company’s fifth in its annual collection of the best places to go and best things to do in the year ahead.

Cork was listed as a “top city” alongside Abu Dhabi, Charleston (South Carolina, USA), Cuenca (Ecuador), Istanbul, Kyoto, Lecce in Italy, Sarajevo, Singapore and Vancouver. The guide said Cork was now “at the top of its game: sophisticated, vibrant and diverse”.

Tourism leaders in Cork have declared the inclusion of the city as being “a major boost”, particularly in recessionary times. Cork is the only Irish listing in the Lonely Planet for 2010.

The news was welcomed on the People’s Republic of Cork website, a celebration of all things Leeside. One member reacted with the line, “Am glad that others are finally realising that we are special,” while another joked, “Heard the writer of the guide is from Knocknaheeny”. Another posted: “Cork is an excellent city. It’s small enough to navigate around, it has interesting shops, fine pubs and good restaurants. Far too many people diss our great city instead of being proud of it.”"

Here is an interesting opportunity for guests of Sheila's Cork Hostel to do some good and do some sightseeing at the same time:

Support the Chernobyl Chidrens Project and see Ireland for free! The Tour de Munster needs people to cheer on the cyclists.

This cycle race starts on Thursday and over the following days, the route will take in some of the most beautiful places in the Munster region. Volunteers will get collected each morning and you will be brought back to Cork each evening. In return, you will be asked to help with some fundraising - ie: shake a bucket!

This is an amazing opportunity to help a really worthy cause and see Ireland at the same time! Details available on our noticeboard.

How to travel around Ireland with no money!
Follow the intrepid backpackers: Sadhbh and Claire as they try to get around Cork and Kerry with no money!

Sheila's have promised them free accommodation on 17th Aug but in return they have to rollerblade UP St. Patrick's Hil l while holding a full pint of Murphy's - spill a drop and they have to start again!

If they want to eat - they have to perform challenges set by local restauraunts. Beer may involve even more shenanningans!

The Logos Hope ship is in Cork docks all this week.The world's largest floating bookshop brings books to developing countries worldwide.

Many of the volunteers are staying at Sheila's Cork Hostel.

18,000 visited the ship in Belfast, almost 10,000 climbed on board in Dublin... make sure you don't miss this unique opportunity to visit Logos Hope at the start of the ship's ministry. Watch out for the OM Ireland stand on the visitor deck.

Yes, you read correctly: Chickenfoot. Say that name again, just to get used to its sound. Chickenfoot.

It's a silly name for a band -- and album -- that kicks a donkey's ass six ways to Sunday and back again. Maybe that's because long before the four men who comprise Chickenfoot came together they already filled the pages of rock history with enough individual mind-blowing chapters to boggle the mind. The news that they've pooled their inordinate talents to one collective whole quickly spread across the Internet last year (and perhaps that crazy name helped just a little). But the fact that they've succeeded artistically beyond anyone's wildest dreams (except perhaps their own) is all the more reason to celebrate.

A live performance piece by artist David Sherry

The artist David Sherry came to public and critical prominence in 2003 representing Scotland at the Venice Biennale and as a short-listed artist for the Beck’s Futures art prize in the ICA, London. Since then his darkly humorous work has been shown extensively including solo exhibitions in Antwerp, San Francisco, Geneva, Paris and London. Sherry is currently taking part in the exhibition Grin & Bear It: cruel humour in art and life, at the award-winning Lewis Glucksman Gallery. For the Midsummer Festival, Sherry will present Complaints, a live performance work that invites members of the public to air their grievances on just about anything.
