The Shaughnessy Village received a Vancouver Tourism Award nomination this February, congratulating General Manager Jan Floody and her staff for making a positive impact on their guests' stay. "They are lucky to have a leader who does a great job boosting their morale," said Vancouver Tourism staff member Chole Hoppie.

The certificate now hangs in the Shaughnessy Village lobby for everyone to see.

"I'm very proud of my staff, and it's delightful to have them recognized by others in the tourism industry," said Floody.

Location of Shaughnessy in Vancouver.

Shaughnessy is an almost entirely residential neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, spanning about 447 hectares^[1] in a relatively central locale. It is bordered by 16th Avenue to the north, 41st Avenue to the south, Oak Street to the east, and Arbutus Street/West Boulevard to the west. Recent census estimates place its population at 9020, hailing from 2970 households^[1].

The neighbourhood is characterized by the affluence of its residents: at an average annual household income of $136,252 and family income of $153,895^[1] it is the wealthiest neighbourhood in Vancouver^[2]. It is also the site of many historical homes, especially in First Shaughnessy. 51.5% of the neighbourhood's homes were built before or during World War II, compared with 20.8% for the city at large^[1]. This is largely due to the 1981 First Shaughnessy Official Development Plan by-law, which promotes private property ownership and single-family dwelling, while limiting property subdivision and population density^[3].

The neighbourhood was created in 1907 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, then the largest real estate developer in Canada. It was meant as an alternative to the West End, which was the traditional home for the budding city's elite^[4]. Thanks to aggressive marketing by the Railroad, highly regulated development and a stronger degree of exclusiveness, it gradually took the latter's status over the past century.

So as it turns out one Shaughnessy Village employee, namely Kevin the IT man, went through the trouble of producing this fantastic You Tube Video. It's full of magical photographs depicting various aspects of the Village, including the Shaughnessy Village pool and Pitch-n-Put course. Pay close attention to the sound track too, it really gives one a sense of the mysterious.

Your eyes will widen to the size of saucers when you step into the campy lobby of the Shaugnessy Village, undoubtedly the city's kitschiest hotel. But this joint doesn't take itself too seriously and that's the secret of its success. Immerse yourself in what Vegas hotels used to be like.

If you embrace all things wacky, you'll love the unique combination of flowery sofas, pink carpets and shipping paraphernalia covering every interior inch of this giant tower block 'B&B resort'. Resort is definitely the right word since the Shaugnessy has the air of an innocent 1950s Vegas hotel, complete with glass-encased displays of petrified rocks, a gym with a bum-shaking belt machine and a tree-lined 'Cupid's Garden' area with waterfalls, crazy golf and a watercourse for miniature boat racing. But the hotel is in tiptop condition, right down to its clean, well-maintained rooms. Recalling ships cabins or RV homes, these are all lined with wooden cabinets and include compact en suites, small TVs, microwaves and refrigerators. Each has a little balcony - some with mountain views. Extras include free full breakfast, outdoor pool, large laundry, health club and on-site hairdresser.

The ‘Village’ is in the hospitality industry and the staff, under the leadership of Ms. Floody have been nominated and won several tourism awards for outstanding service.

One of the main attractions are the world famous award winning, romantic ‘Cupid’s Gardens’ which offer fantastic photo opportunities and have been used for a number of engagement and wedding parties.
Visitors can also enjoy some sushi and tea in the Japanese Garden Restaurant.

For those interested in staying on either a long or short term basis the ‘Village’ offers three sizes of rooms—‘small, smaller and smallest’---most of which are clones of each other and at rates that are so low it’s hard to believe.

“Put An End To Bullying” more info

On February 27 Shaughnessy Village declared their support to “Put An End To Bullying”.

All the staff wore a pink carnation, trimmed with a pink ribbon.

In the elevators and main and lower main floors were posted signs featuring a pink heart that said: “Support----Put An End To Bullying”.

The ‘Village’s’ Vice President and General Manager Jan Floody said that the staff and many of the visitors and 250 guests were proud of the position that the Village has taken to support this great cause that was instigated by Christy Clark, Radio Talk Show Host at CKNW.

B.C.’s Premier Gordon Campbell stated that February 27 each year will be ‘Stop The Bullying’ day.

This initiative has been recognized by many people throughout Canada, some parliamentarians in Ottawa and by people’s in countries around the world.

The ‘Village’ believes this is a step in the right direction in making people hospitable in their relations towards each other.

Today the Shaughnessy Village Staff wore Pink to commemorate Anti-Bullying day in B.C.

B.C. is declaring tomorrow a day to support anti-bullying efforts in schools and communities across the province.

Premier Gordon Campbell said it's important to send a signal that there's strength in numbers when it comes to bullying.

Education Minister Shirley Bond said Anti-Bullying Day is another way the government is working on tangible ways to make people feel safe and achieve their best.
