Evidament a mon avis c'était encore un effort de nier la présence importante de juifs en Syrie. et je crois que ces juifs-la, dans haurtes positions de l'armé en Syrie, se sont calmement sorti vers Israël ont eceirt leur exploits eux mêmes qui était des best sellers.

L’ ALLIGATOR EST LEGER

Pas plus que la mort, je n'avais de ma vie vu un alligator en liberté d'aussi près. De loin, comme dans Tintin, on dirait un bout de bois flottant. Une légère courbe au niveau du museau et de l'arcade permet, a mesure qu'il s'approche, de deviner autre chose; puis apparait le relief bien sculpté de cette peau épaisse et sombre, ces créneaux qui l'apparentent pour l'homme a une sculpture ou a un jouet, et alors, plus de doute, la bête que j'ai devant moi et qui pourrait avoir a peu près mon age descend de celles qui, ici même, en Caroline du Sud, ont du manger quelques esclaves quand l'eau stagnante de cette rivière irriguait les rizières ou ils pataugeaient. Cette bête est une réalité que je découvre, comme toujours, peu a peu: tant l'homme se plait a imaginer toutes sortes de choses, du moment qu'il ne voit pas celle qu'il a sous le nez.

Nous le contemplons avec une fascination non dénuée d'extase, car s'il fait peur, si on peut même-dire que son calme, sa lenteur et ce regard intense et froid et mortellement endormi le rendent effroyable, on ne peut nier qu'il correspond a ce phénomène qui, depuis l'attentat, nous occupe: l'apparition de la beauté.

Université Duke, j’ai enseigné viola sept ans, autrement dit dans une autre vie, nous a invités pour parler de La Légèreté. Catherine m'avait demandé de préfacer son introspection graphique. Au centre, il y a cette recherche de la beauté, de paysages en musées, dans le moindre détail, pour échapper a ce qui, a partir du 7 janvier, aurait pu la rendre folle. Nous parlons de ca pendant deux jours avec les professeurs, les étudiants, et, quand nous avons fini de parler, nous allons boire des cocktails puissants et raffinés, parce que c'est le Sud et parce que nous avons soif. Nous avons souffert d'être survivants; nous sommes heureux d'être vivants.

GIVERNY SOUS LES TROPIQUES

Notre conversation se poursuit dans les-rues de Charleston, ou nous marchons pendant des heures, et dans l’obscurité. Pas un chat, pas un bruit, et partout cette odeur entêtante d'oranger du Mexique et ces vieilles maisons splendides, en briques ou en bois, qui datent des siècles passés et a l'intérieur desquelles, quand c’est allumé, on croit voir plutôt qu'une habitation un mussée. Nous parlons dans la nuit subtropicale et comme malgré nous de nos amis morts, un par un et au fil des souvenirs, lentement, joyeusement, précisément, au pied des glycines. L’endroit ou nous le trouvons est une ancienne plantation que les touristes américains visitent volontiers: la plantation Magnolia. Elle date de 1672. C'est l’un des fleurons bien conservés de la civilisation des planteurs. Assez vite après la guerre de Sécession, comme elle a été préservée de.la destruction par les armées nordistes, la famille qui la possède l'ouvre aux visites: il faut faire entrer l'argent quand tout a disparu, esclaves et rizières. Aujourd'hui, selon un guide, c'est la troisième destination la plus visitée après les chutes du Niagara et le Grand Canyon du Colorado. Symboliquement, c'est autre chose: un choc suave entre ce dont la nature est capable et ce dont l'homme est capable.

Les touristes ont remplacé les esclaves. La plupart sont gros, parfois obèses. Il suffit de marcher quelques centaines de mètres pour leur échapper. , On rejoint le silence, les oiseaux, cette violente chaleur du Sud qui s'abat sur avril comme la mélancolie sur les premiers esclaves. Autour de la bête, c'est Giverny sous les tropiques: une splendeur luxuriante et fleuri. admirablement composée, d'un baroque naturel et extravagant. La mésaventure de ce jeune écrivain n'est pas une péripétie qu'on doit minimiser sous prétexte qu'elle a lieu en Algérie. Que se passerait-il en France si un livre décrivant Dieu sous forme d'un SDF suscitait des vagues d'indignation comparables? Aujourd'hui, les moindres protestations ou menaces proférées sur les réseaux sociaux suffiraient pour faire taire l'insolent qui publierait de telles ironies. Depuis 2015,l'intolérance à l'égard du blasphème n'a fait que grandir. En France, malgré la loi qui en protège l'exercice, les esprits qui rejettent le blasphème sont plus nombreux qu'on le croit et ne se limitent plus à la sphère marginale de quelques religieux illuminés. Le blasphème est bien installé dans les têtes, et la loi qui l'autorise semble de plus en plus en décalage avec cette triste réalité.

Il y a trois semaines, Charlie Hebdointerpellait les candidats à la présidentielle pour obtenir d'eux rengagement que la loi de1905 ne serait pas amendée s'ils étaient élus à l'Élysée. Pour certains commenta

teurs, cette initiative n'avait pas d'objet car, selon eux,

. personne ne revendique sérieusement de la remettre -en cause. Certes, mais sur le terrain, la réalité défie souvent les règles édictées par cette loi. Et on aimerait constater que rengagement des hommes politiques

pour la défendre est .bien réel, et pas seulement une promesse de plus. Car on ne défend pas une loi en disant qu'on n'y touchera pas. On la défend en défendant ce qu'elle est censée défendre.

Le destin des Algériens s'était invité dans la campagne électorale quand Emmanuel Macron avait condamné la colonisation que .la France leur avait fait subir pendant plus d'un siècle. Mais pour défendre un jeune écrivain algérien menacé d'être condamné comme blasphémateur, il n'y a plus grand monde qui se bouscule. Il est des malheurs qu'il est glorieux de dénoncer, et d'autres, beaucoup plus encombrants, qu'on préfère mettre sous le tapis. Car en politique, la religion est devenue un sujet hautement explosif Lors d'une réunion pour préparer une campagne de six mois contre le sexisme organisée par le ministère des Droits des femmes, une personnalité issue de la société civile proposa que parmi les thèmes soit abordé celui de «la religion et les femmes », On a répondu que la religion serait traitée plus tard, mais pas dans le cadre de ce plan «contre le sexisme». C'est pour cela que Charlie Hebdo a sollicité les candidats à la présidence sur la loi de 1905. À ce jour, plusieurs d'entre eux ont répondu. Mais curieusement, certains, et pas des moindres, n'ont pas daigné le faire. Laissons-leur le temps de rédiger leur réponse avant de les juger.

Même si une élection présidentielle doit débattre de tous les problèmes de la société française, comme l'écologie, l'économie, l'éducation ou la culture, la réflexion sur la place de la religion dans notre société ne peut plus être évitée. Il est vrai que cette question est un peu surréaliste. Qui aurait imaginé, il y a trente ans, qu'elle mériterait un jour d'être posée dans une élection présidentielle? En 2017, elle n'est malheureusement plus superflue. La poser n'a pas pour but de rassurer uniquement les citoyens français, mais aussi tous ceux qui dans le monde pensent que la France incarne des valeurs fondamentales comme la liberté de conscience et le refus de la soumission au sacré. C'est donc aussi pour ce jeune écrivain algérien et ses semblables à travers le monde que les candidats de cette élection présidentielle se doivent de donner à l'interpellation de Charlie Hebdosur la loi de 1905 une réponse claire et ferme. !Il

Thousands march in Gaza vs. Hamas cuts in electricity

Working people in the Gaza Strip won a victory when they forced the Hamas government to restore electricity to previous levels, following a series of protests. In the middle of winter, residents were provided with just four hours of electricity at a time followed by 12 hours without power. This was a steep cut from the already low levels of eight hours prior to the crisis.
The largest action was Jan. 12 when some 10,000 Palestinians in Jabaliya, the largest of eight refugee camps in Gaza, took to the streets.
In a rare sign of public protest in Gaza, which is tightly controlled by the Islamist group Hamas, they marched to the offices of the electricity company. Protesters chanted, “Raise your voice, electricity cuts mean death,” “Oh, Haniya and Abbas, we are being trampled!” and “The people want the fall of the regime.”
The chants were aimed at Ismail Haniya, leader of Hamas, and Mahmoud Abbas, head of the rival Fatah party and the president of the Palestinian Authority ruling in the West Bank.
Hamas security forces fired live ammunition in the air to disperse the crowd, hit participants with batons and arrested some of the protesters.
Nearly 2 million Palestinians live in Gaza, one of the most densely populated areas in the world. To keep electric power running round the clock would require 450 to 500 megawatts a day, but the territory receives less than half of that.
Israel supplies 120 megawatts, Egypt supplies 30 megawatts and Gaza’s only power plant, which runs on diesel fuel and was bombed by the Israeli army in 2006 and 2014 and never rebuilt to full capacity, generates 60 megawatts.
The cause of the latest shortages is not entirely clear, but Hamas and the Palestinian Authority blamed each other. Hamas buys diesel from the Palestinian Authority, which taxes the fuel.
Capitalist and middle class families living in wealthy neighborhoods have solar panels, Al-Monitor newspaper reported last year. But the panels, rechargeable batteries and transformers that can cost $1,000 to be able to light a house for eight hours, are beyond the reach of the vast majority.
By Jan. 16 the government of Qatar had come to the rescue of Hamas, sending $12 million to pay for diesel fuel. The Turkish government also promised aid.
The Israeli government pulled its citizens and military out of Gaza in 2005, turning control over to the Palestinian Authority. The next year Hamas defeated Fatah in elections and then pushed its rivals out in bloody street clashes in 2007.
The people of Gaza have paid a high price for Hamas’ reactionary, anti-working-class program, its calls for the destruction of Israel and its promotion of Jew-hatred, which has brought three wars with Israel in the past 10 years. In the 2014 war Tel Aviv retaliated for missiles Hamas fired into Israel. The Israeli attacks killed more than 2,100, injured some 11,000 and destroyed factories. The casualties were so high because Hamas’ strategy was to place its weapons in working-class neighborhoods, as well as schools and hospitals.
The Israeli government tightly controls the entry of everything from concrete to medical supplies into the territory, exacerbating shortages. Some 95 percent of water in Gaza isn’t fit to drink, the unemployment rate is over 40 percent, and hospitals face dire shortages of medicines, equipment and supplies.
Every few weeks Salah Haj Yahya and a few other Israeli Arab doctors from Physicians for Human Rights take a mobile clinic to Gaza.
“They [Hamas] can bring out hundreds of thousands of people. But there are many angry people who are very frustrated with Hamas,” Haj Yahya told the Israeli daily Haaretz Jan 7. “Many people tell me they dream of returning to Israel to work, as they once did. They feel that no one cares about them, not the Israelis, not the Egyptians, and not the Palestinian Authority.”

Ich bin zum ersten Mal 1995 in der Comédie Française gewesen, um mir Racines Phadra anzusehen. Ich war wie hypnotisiert. Damals lernte ich noch Französisch; ich hatte die Tragödie mit Hilfe des Robert (Französisches Wörterbuch, Anm. d. Ü.) intensiv vorbereitet, damit mir ja nichts von dieser majestätischen Sprache Racines entgehen sollte. Ich bewahre eine ganz wundervolle Erinnerung an diese Vorstellung. Nach der Aufführung ging ich aufgewühlt nach Hause, erfüllt von dem Gefühl, Jahrhundert zu durchschreiten. Seither bin ich der Comédie Française bedingungslos verfallen. Bei meinem letzen Besuch vor einer Woche sah ich La Regle du jeu von Jean Renoir. Er gestand, dass Le Mariage de Figaro von Beaumarchais, Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard von Marivaux und Les Caprices de Marianne von Alfred de Müsset die Inspirationsquellen für das Drehbuch zu seinem Film gewesen waren.

‘Cuban soldiers gave their lives for our independence’

Below is an excerpt from the address by Linda Scott, speaking on behalf of the government of Namibia, at the special Dec. 20 U.N. event commemorating Fidel Castro.

"The solidarity forged in the trenches of the battlefields of southern Angola by Cuban internationalists is a solidarity for which Namibia shall always be indebted. We recognize that there is no Cuban family who has not been touched by the war for Namibia’s independence, who was not impacted by the sacrifice required and who did not lose at least one family member or friend.

Namibia suffered under the same apartheid horrors as our brothers and sisters across the border in South Africa. A daily reality imposed with the additional whip of colonialism. Many Namibians fled and took refuge in neighboring Angola. On May 4, 1978, an attack took place on a refugee camp in Cassinga in Angola, two days after the United Nations Security Council had discussed the situation there. This aggression resulted not only in the deaths of over 1,000 Namibians that day, but also of Cuban soldiers who were en route to assist the camp.

This incident resulted in an immediate response by only one country, the Republic of Cuba. And by only one world leader in the person of Fidel Castro. He ordered that the children who had survived would be brought to Cuba where schools would be set up for them. Other Namibian children later joined them. So it was that two schools were set up on the Island of Youth in Cuba for Namibian children to study.

This story is told and retold in our country. Many of these children have gone on to be leaders in Namibia, from doctors and geologists to economists and teachers.

We further remember the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, in which Cuban soldiers also gave their lives and which led to the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 435 and the successful elections and independence of which Namibia is so proud.

Friend or foe, one must acknowledge that Fidel Castro was an extraordinary person. For who but Fidel Castro could imagine taking on the Batista army with 13 armed men, only to go on to put in place the Cuban Revolution. Fidel was motivated by service to the oppressed and self-determination of the Americas and Africa.

From him we learned that one can compromise on anything except one’s principles. We know this because the Cuban soldiers returned to their home country without benefiting economically from the African countries in which they fought.

These were the principles we witnessed as Namibians, which gave us hope and resilience. The Cuban people continued to stand tall in the face of the Soviet withdrawal from their country and subsequent near starvation of the population due to the blockade of the country by the United States of America.

Having been among those who opened the Namibian Mission in Cuba at that time I can attest to the great difficulties that the people faced.

As we gather here in honor of this life well lived we stand as sovereign nations in gratitude to a man whose footprint on this planet remains in the lives of Namibian children who are born free. "
