You bring up a good question regarding the return on investment of the certification for SharePoint 2007 in terms of where we are in the product lifecycle.
In addition to the posts referenced in the comment above regarding Paul's questions, I'd recommend reading Per's recent "Let's Talk Upgrades" post (http://blogs.technet.com/themasterblog/archive/2009/03/30/Let_2700_s-talk-upgrades_2100_.aspx) as he provides some good insight into this question.
With regards to the release of SharePoint 2010, the SharePoint 2010 MCM certification will be a 1-week upgrade course (with exams) for SharePoint 2007 MCMs at a much lower cost than a full 3-week rotation.
In terms of return on investment for being certified on the current version, one perspective is that it would be beneficial to be certified both on SharePoint 2007 as well as SharePoint 2010 as it relates to the many upgrade opportunities that will exist. There are many existing SharePoint 2007 deployments that will need to be upgraded to SharePoint 2010 over the next few years and having deep expertise (and certifications) in both versions of the product will be beneficial to those planning and executing these upgrades.
I hope this helps to provide some clarity regarding our strategy and thoughts for the MCM for SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010.
Thanks,
James

SharePoint Deployment Planning Services – Consulting companies…. get Certified!
SDPS certified and registered to receive payment for engagements.

Technorati: SharePoint, Podcast, SharePointCommunity,SharePointConference 09, SharePoint 2010, Michael Greth, Office 2010

Is Gradual Upgrade in SharePoint 2010 Really Dead? How is Upgrade Better?

In the Upgrade to SharePoint 2007 there were 3 popular methods. In Place, Gradual, and Database Attach. In place was a scenario that many of us took as a no starter and many of us even went so far as to say NEVER do it. Now the message is there are two methods for upgrade. In place and Database attach. Despite the fact that gradual upgrade as we knew it is dead, what we got from gradual upgrade we still have. What do I mean?

There is NO supported method to run both the 2007 and 2010 bits side by side. That’s true. So definitely not side by side installations. There is also no Central Admin UI for upgrade groups of sites with gradual method. So why would I say, it really has just taken a new form. Essentially the new gradual upgrade is visual upgrade. The mistake that was being made was people were not comfortable with the upgrade process so they would lay down the new bits on the box and then not upgrade the sites immediately, they would determine which web applications they would first start with and run some concurrency with an old and new web application and do a few sites at a time.

With the major two step punch of Binary upgrade completely out of band with Visual Upgrade, being not mutually exclusive, also meaning that we can run the binary upgrade and then run visual upgrade on two different time lines. We now still have a very similar path.

Essentially you’ll do the binary upgrade using one or the other method above. Once complete you’ll run the visual upgrade a few site collections at a time.

So hence the process really hasn’t changed much if you were doing gradual before.

How is SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Better? At least three things around control have gotten better:

You use to have to have both products installed to have the option to upgrade a few sites at a time. Now you can do it by simply upgrading the binaries due to the site structure and features of SharePoint 2007 being included/shipped with SharePoint 2010.

The redirector stuff was a mess. Users were always confused “Which URL, which one gets updated.” “Is it read only or are the sites being synchronized.” Attempt to trying to maintain 2 different web applications was messy. Some of us figured out how to lock read only, but a few really struggled with upgrade. With the visual upgrade you don’t need to maintain 2 different web apps, they use the same one.

Do No Harm – the binary upgrade which is essentially what most IT folks think of as the real upgrade, is designed to take a No harm no Foul mantra. If the binary upgrade breaks anything that is in the known world of the SharePoint binaries that’s a bug. If it’s outside of the products own features, solutions, and site definitions, then the PreUpgradeCheck should identify those issues.

I’ll be putting out a few articles on upgrade so watch for more in this series…

More articles and posts on SharePoint 2010 Upgrade:

5 Reasons PreUpgradeCheck is better than Prescan
Details on PreUpgradeCheck
Whitepaper: Preparing for SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Today
Archived Webcast and Deck: Preparing for SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Today
Q&A for the Webcast

With enhancements including a focus on internal collaboration and integration with social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, Gov 2.0 makes government more collaborative and streamlined than ever before. The Gov 2.0 Kit provides an enhanced user experience to citizens who search or browse federal or state and local government sites to quickly find information and complete services with increased ease and satisfaction.
Features
'MyPeeps' - What's on your mind? Gov 2.0 Kit 'My Peeps' templates enable social sharing of information within government entities and allows optional promotion of this information to public facing social networking sites. This solution’s major advantage is that it is hosted on-premise for “government-only” social networking and all information is kept internal unless otherwise tagged to be posted to Internet sites like Twitter or Facebook.

eGov MySite Template RC1

eGov MySite Installation and Deployment Guide

eGov Toolkit Demonstration Video

eGov Toolkit Click-Thru Demo

eGov Toolkit Click-Thru Demo Script

Share Button Template RC1

Share Button Install Document

Twitter Web Part Template RC1

Twitter Web Part Install Document

Share>Point 2010

INTRO: Sandboxed Solutions in SP2010

CodePlex Tools

ITaCS SharePoint Post Installation Tool (PIT)

jQuery Library for SharePoint Web Services

SharePoint Help Collection Builder (from BlackCompass)

SharePoint LiveListData

Technorati: SharePoint, Podcast, SharePointCommunity,SharePointConference 09, SharePoint 2010, Michael Greth, Office 2010

Cool?

So that gives you the high level gist of where this post came from…

In my experience Microsoft puts most emphasis on Developers, IT Pro, BDM/TDM, and finally Information worker. The PM, Business analyst, Operations Manager, are often neglected in my opinion. I’ve found a few experts that cater to this area like @meetdux @paulculmsee @andrewwoody

Dux has a book on Project Managers for SharePoint a very easy read. Paul Culmsee does these mind maps for tying down requirements that’s pretty awesome and Andrew Woodward is the most TDD driven guy I’ve come across. Very interested in test driven deployments and very systematic.

Bob Mixon has put a lot into Information Architecture and workshops on that topic.

Nicola Young and John Ross at SharePoint911.com have put together a workshop on end user training including on site training. I worked with them to put together a course on Governance.

Mindsharp has custom end user training, and Steve Smith of Combined Knowledge in the UK has a fabulous system on knowledge and training that’s integrated into an online system for search and reference that can integrate into a help desk as well as training system.

Ruven Gots is one of my favorites in Canada on SharePoint Project Management.

Robert Bogue has put together a Sheperd’s Guide to SharePoint for End users, and now has a DVD for training interactive content.

Most if not all of these people run blogs and have books and do consulting both onsite and in the classroom. The list goes on.

Developer: MSDN SharePoint 2010 Developer Center

OK. So here’s the key resources recap plus new:

End User SharePoint – Tons of resources and awesome bloggers (yeah, some are somewhat technical around things like Infopath, SharePoint Designer, etc…) Mark Miller the ring leader with Laura Rogers, and Paul Galvin do a lot of contributions, with more coming on all the time.

SharePoint Training Pays Off

Brad Guzan is probably not a name known to many of you, but on Tuesday night he incredibly saved FOUR penalties for Aston Villa to help them beat Sunderland and reach the last eight of the Carling Cup. Yes he is Villa’s brilliant American goalkeeper named ‘Brad’, the one who isn’t Brad Friedel. So how did Mr. Guzan, who only plays in cup games, manage to save four penalties from four different players? He puts it all down to training and practicing saving penalties every day. So when you are thinking of how to get the best out of your SharePoint project team make sure you train them well because it will help your SharePoint Project succeed.

Make sure that all SharePoint Project Team members and any Super Users (always helpful for promoting SharePoint) are aware of exactly what SharePoint can do and have a good basic understanding of all the features. They might not be able to save Sunderland penalties, but they should know about all of the following;

1. Layout of SharePoint
2. Changing SharePoint Navigation
3. Creating SharePoint Sites
4. Adding Announcements, Contacts, Calendar and Task items
5. Uploading Documents and Images
6. Defining version control and document approval
7. Use Metadata and Site Columns
8. Creating Custom Lists
9. Creating and Editing Views
10. How to add Document Templates using Content Types
11. Best way to Search
12. Designing Surveys
13. Creating Alerts
14. Managing SharePoint User Rights

Apologies if the list above looks familiar to anybody who has been on the Office Talk SharePoint Super User one day course, but I thought I would reuse the list I cover in that course. Of course, I am always happy to run on-site SharePoint Training courses just send an email to frank.faulds@office-talk.com if you require any SharePoint training.

Whether the training is done by a SharePoint Consultancy, like Office Talk, or even just using some of the free on-line training from Microsoft it needs to be included in every SharePoint Project. SharePoint has many excellent features (like Content Types, recurring meetings, calculated fields), but if the main users don’t know about them the full return on investment of your SharePoint might never be reached. The extra training that Brad Guzan did on penalties might just mean that come next March the Villa are again parading around Wembley with a shining cup.

My SharePoint tip this week is to use the ‘Totals’ section on a View. If you create, or modify, an existing View then scroll down and you will have an option called ‘Totals’. Click on the ‘+’ to open the options. You can now on many of the columns add some basic calculations like ‘count’, ‘sum’ even ‘standard deviation’ (if I could only remember what that was about from my O’Level Maths). If you ‘group’ your columns first you can get some pretty impressive figures. Maybe not as impressive as saving four out of five penalties, but still very useful.

Now who is going to tell Brad Guzan that he is dropped for Saturday’s game at Everton?

Don’t forget for all your SharePoint Training needs visit Office Talk.

SharePoint 2010 Admin Webcast Archive plus Q&A

These last couple of days I’ve done a webcast on some of the new features and how it impacts administrators. The New World of SharePoint 2010 Administration: A Day in the Life an archive is available including a PDF of the slides.
Here’s the Q&A
Asked: What about merging data from multiple collections into one?
With the enhanced import and export packages merging lists, and sites gets much better. You can export lists and sites and combine them in a single site collection.
A good blog from Russ at Microsoft on Import and Export in SharePoint 2010

Asked: is there a migration path from wss 2.0/MOSS 2003 to MOSS 2010?
The migration path when using out of the box SharePoint is to go from SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010.
For WSS 2.0 you would upgrade WSS 3.0 then WSS 4.0 then install SharePoint Server 2010. The database attach methods work as well where you could attach a WSS 2.0 database to a MOSS 2007 farm and then upgrade to 2010.
Partners such as Quest do have tools to support getting from SPS 2003 or WSS 2.0 to SharePoint 2010 directly using Quest Migration Manager. I’d expect Metalogix, AvePoint, Tsunami and Echo among others to have migration/upgrade offerings go to http://www.sharepointreviews.com for unbiased customer reviews and ratings.

Asked: is the information portal in the current site admin product?
The information portal is new but is in the current released version.

Asked: Regarding the visual upgrade - are owners (i.e. those who have full control) of subsites able to do the visual upgrade on their own, i.e. it's not just site collection admin?
The Site Collection Administrators have control of the visual upgrade as well as the farm administrators. Sub sites (the sites underneath the site collection) can be visually upgraded independently, but this can be confusing. The owners should work together with the site collection administrators.

Asked: If you configure a subsite rule in site manager allowing only 2 subsites (as shown in the demo), is the user allowed to to create 3 subsites and the 3rd is deleted without warning when the policy job executes at some point in the future?
With Quest Site Administrator as long as the policy rule is created before the violation they would be blocked from creating the third site. If the site existed before the rule was created it would be deleted based on the policy.

Asked: Is there a way to install Servicepacks or Hotfixes without taking down the whole Farm?
There are some new patching features including the ability to upgrade the binaries and then later upgrade the databases. There are some uptime strategies for upgrading in high availability method using read only databases or mirroring. You’ll see more information as we get closer to release. There is some information on patching.

Asked: does Quest intend on providing custom powershell management scripts as powershell seems to have gained primary mgmt responsibility OOB
Dmitry Sotnikov a huge powershell evangelist employed by Quest has already been working with the powershell scripts and put together a blog on the commandlets. Definitely let him know what you might be looking for. I hear work is being done to put together a Power GUI, Power Pack for SharePoint 2010.

Asked: Can you speak to deployment enhancements and the administators role in deployment in 2010?
1) Powershell makes it easier to script installation
2) Tenant admin makes it easier to delegate groups of site collections with better usage and reporting
3) Usage and Logging databases make it easier to determine what’s up with control for verbose logging
4) Service Apps support a more delegated approach from both a security trimmed UI as well shop where you want for the services

Asked: Can a site collection be in more than one content db?
Sorry. No, but external lists, list throttling, and improvements in partner solutions around blob storage should help with sizing

Asked: any further advancements in alerts and alert management?
Check out SharePoint Foundation 2010 Alerts Enhancements on MSDN.

Asked: Will the Quest Site Migration Manager offer site export / import features that are not in SharePoint 2010?
Yes. It’s designed around making it easy to upgrade, migrate and reorganize your data between older and newer versions or from current version to current version as in farm to farm or site collection to site collection.

Asked: It may be too early to ask this, but issue should an organization be aware of when moving from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010.
The new services will include new considerations as will social computing options around my sites. I highly encourage the new my sites, while I may wait on turning on performance point services, visio and access services until the business was ready for them.
The ability to turn them on when you’re ready should help a lot. Note: With upgrade you could simply upgrade your servers and wait until different parts of the business are ready for 2010 so you can take advantage of the admin features and enhancements.
There were a ton of presentations on Governance at SPC. One of them asked if Governance was still necessary for 2010, H Yes.

Asked: Has the management of timer jobs in central admin been made simpler in SharePoint 2010?
Yes, managing timer jobs is a much better interface in central admin.
SharePoint Sandbox: SharePoint 2010 Timer Jobs Overview

Asked: Different topic: As SP2010 is designed for other browsers, How is the Integrated Windows Authentication handled in other browsers like FireFox?
Firefox has built in support for NTLM it just has to be enabled. It’s disabled by default.
Here’s a blog on SharePoint & NTLM with Configuring Firefox.
Also check out the New SharePoint and Office 2010 Good Better Best (compares and contrasts older versions of Office with SharePoint 2010)

Asked: When will the public beta come out? and is workflow changing from the current version?
November is the planned Public Beta. Workflow is enhanced. It’s easier to create workflows from Visual Studio 2010 with templates, and it’s easier to create and deploy to more than one site collection from SharePoint Designer 2010.
You can register for the SharePoint 2010 download bits NOW!

Asked: Can site collections be converted to subsites or vice versa?
They can be imported and exported yes.
Here’s a blog post from Russ on Import and Export in SharePoint 2010

Asked: For developer environments, will it be possible to create one using windows 7?
YES!! Currently there is a config.XML that must be set, but yes it can. SharePoint and Windows 7 (These instructions get way better after bits become available.)

Asked: How will project server be affected with upgrade?
The project team plans to support upgrade of SharePoint Server 2007 with Project Server 2007 to Project Server 2010. Have you hear Project Server 2010 even requires full blown SharePoint Server 2010. SharePoint Solutions addresses that piece on their blog.

SPC09 Recap and My SharePoint 2010 Top 5 List

The four day SharePoint 2010 reveal-athon is over, and I'm back to a boring and completely regular MOSS 2007 lifestyle. Okay, so it's not that dramatic, but I am definitely feeling a desire to switch completely over to 2010 for just about everything relating to SharePoint. There was tons of great content on display during the SharePoint Conference in Vegas last week. I'll be pouring over the on-demand sessions for weeks I'm sure, so this is only the beginning for the 2010 learning process.

There are some good resources popping up on the net about everyone's favorite features about 2010, so I won't spend time competing with them. I'll even link them below, but I do have my own personal top 5 list that I'd like to share with you...
