Shiva Kshamapana Stotram

Adhou karma prasangath kalayathi kalusham,

Mathru kakshou stithou maam,

Vin moothra madhye madhye kwadhayathi niratharaam,

Jaadaro jadhaveda,

Yadyadwaithathra dukham vythayathi sutharaam,

Sakyathe kena vakthum,

Kshandavyo me aparadha shiva Shiva Shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho.

Due to the remnants of Karmic sins,

I was created inside my mother’s womb,

And placed between urine, excreta and heat,

And suffered a lot by the heat and smell.

And possibly none can describe,

The sufferings that I underwent there,

And So Shambho, be pleased to pardon,

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

Baalye dukhathirekaan malalulitha vapu,

Sthanya pane pipasa,

Know shakthischenriyebhyo bhaya guna janitha,

Janthavo maam thudanthi,

Naana rogaadhi dukhadrudhana paravasa,

Sankarama na smaraami,

Kshandavyo me aparadha shiva Shiva Shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho.

Due to lots of sorrow,

During early childhood, I rolled in dirt,

And with a dirty body,

I was interested only in drinking milk from breasts.

Insects like fly also bit me often.

Which I was not able to prevent,

And was also attacked by many illness great,

And never did I find time to think of thee oh, Lord Parameshwara.

And so Shambho, be pleased to pardon.

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

Proudoham youanawastho vishasa visha dharai,

Panchabhir marama sandhou,

Dhashto nashto viveka sutha dhana yuvathi,

Swadhasoumye nishanna,

Saivee Chinthaviheenam mamahya dayamaho,

Maangarvadhi roodam,

Kshandhavyo me aparadha shiva shiva shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho.

When I was passing through the period of youth,

I was bitten by the five snakes of senses,

In vulnerable spots,

And hence lost I, my wisdom,

And began concentrating on pleasures

Of son, riches and ladies,

And so did not think of thee Parameshwara,

And so Shambho, be pleased to pardon.

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

Vaardhakye chendriyaanam vigathi gathi mathi,

Schadhi daivaadhi thapai.

Paapai rogair viyogair stwana vasithavapu,

Proudeeheenam cha dheenam,

Mithyamohaabilakshair bramathi mama mano,

Dhoorjader dhyana soonyam,

Kshandhavyo me aparadha shiva shiva shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho

When I was passing through ripe old age,

My five senses got weakened,

My wisdom lost its memory,

My body got weakened,

Due to god given sin, sickness and pain never leaving it,

And my mind started roaming behind,

Useless passions and desires,

And so I did not think of thee Parameshwara,

And so Shambho, be pleased to pardon.

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

No sakyam smartha karma prathipadagahana,

Pratyavayaka lakhyam,

Srouthe vartha kadam me dwijakala vihithe,

Brahma marge mahesa,

Jnatho dharmo vicharai sravana mana nayo,

Kim nidhi dyasithavyam,

Kshandhavyo me aparadha shiva shiva shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho

Unable I am to observe the complex rules of Dharma daily,

Unable I am to follow the rules of Veda as told by Brahmins,

Unable I am to know Dharma by listening to Vedas and meditating,

And so what is the use of daily learning all these.

And so Shambho, be pleased to pardon.

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

Dhyathwa chithe shivakyam prachurathara dhanam,

Naiva datham dwijebhyo,

Havyam thee laksha sakhyair hutha vaha vadane,

Naarpitham bheeja manthrou,

No thaptham gaanga there vratha japa niyamair,

Rudra japyair na vedai,

Kshandhavyo me aparadha shiva shiva shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho

Never did I give much money to Brahmins,

With thought in my mind of Lord Shiva,

Never did I do fire sacrifice,

Chanting millions of mantras,

Never did I meditate in the banks of holy Ganga,

Never did I do penances based on Vedas,

And never did I chant Rudra,

And so Shambho, be pleased to pardon.

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

Sthithwa sthane saroje pranava maya marul,

Kundale sookshma marge,

Santhe swanthe praleene prakatitha vibhave,

Jyothi rope parakhye,

Lingagne brahma vakye sakala thanu gatham

Sankaram na smarami,

Kshandhavyo me aparadha shiva shiva shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho

Never did I sit in lonely place,

Assume the lotus posture,

And send the Kundalini,

And the breath which is of the form of pranava,

Through the micro path,

To reach the ever shining Para Brahma,

And never did I calm my mind,

And meditate on Paramashiva,

Who transcends the physical body,

And who is the essence of Vedas,

And so Shambho, be pleased to pardon.

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

Nagno nissanga shuddha striguna virahitho,

Dwastha mohandakaro,

Nasagre nyastha drishtir viditha bhava guno,

Naiva drushta kadachit,

Unmathavastha yathwaam vigatha kali malam,

Sankaram na smaraami,

Kshandhavyo me aparadha shiva shiva shambho,

Sri Mahadeva shambho

Never have I concentrated on the tip of my nose,

And try to personify you,

Who is naked,

Who is alone,

Who is ever pure,

Who does not have the three qualities,

And who is capable of dispelling ignorance,

And so Shambho, be pleased to pardon.

My sins, Oh Mahadeva.

Chandroth bhasitha shekhare smarahare,

Gangadhare Sankare,

Sarpair bhooshitha karna kanta vivare,

Nethoththa vaiswanare,

Danthi thwaikya tha sundarambaradhare,

Trailokya sare hare,

Mokshartham kuru chittha vruthi makhila,

Manyaisthu kim karmmabhi.

Hey Lord, who wears the moon ornamented crown,,

Who is the enemy of the God of love,

Who carries Ganga in his head,

Who gives peace to his devotees,

Who wears snakes on his neck and ears,

Who has fire in his eyes,

Who wears the hide of the elephant,

And who is the lord of the three worlds,

Please show me the path of salvation,

For what is the use of any other path.

Kim dhaanena dhanena vajee karibhi,

Prapthena rajyena kim,

Kim va puthra kalatha mithra pasubhir,

Dehena gehena kim,

Jnathwaithat kshana banguram sapadhire,

Tyajyam mano dooratha,

Swathmartham guru vakyatho baja baja,

Sri Paravathi vallabham.

Oh, Mind, What is the use of charity,

What is the use of riches,

What is the use of horses,

By getting a kingdom what is the use,

What is the use of son, wife, friends and cows,

What is the use of this house,

And what is the use of this body,

For all these can be destroyed in a second,

And so keep them all away,

And for the sake of redemption of the soul,

Meditate on the consort of Parvathi,

According to the lessons taught by thine teacher.

Ayur nasyathi pasyatham prathi dinam,

Yathi kshayam youvanam,

Prathyayanthi gatha puna na divasaa,

Kalo jagat bakshaka,

Lakshmisthoya thanga banga chapala,

Vidhyuchalam jeevitham,

Asman maam saranagatham saranadha.

Twam raksha rakshaa dhunaa.

Hey please hear,

Daily span of life decreases,

The youth daily disappears,

The days that are past do never return,

Time eats down the earth,

And Life and wealth are not permanent,

For they are like the tide and lightning,

And so my god Parameshwara,

Forever protect this devotee of thine.

Kaarthika Laksha Deepotsava

Here are pics taken on the occasion of Kaarthika Laksha Deepotsava at Sringeri. It is held on the evening of kaarthika poornima when a lakh of oil lamps are lit all over the temple premisis, on the banks of tunga river and on the side walks of the main bharathi street leading up to the 'malahanikareshwar betta', the hillock on which the samadhi of the great sage vibhandaka muni is located. All the devotees who are visiting the sringeri temples can take part in the deepotsava by receiving 5 oil lamps and kumkuma-arishina to worship the river tunga and then set the lit lamps sail over the waters of tunga river. It is a grand sight to see thousands of lamps sailing on the waters under the moon-lit sky! A very huge rangoli is done by the devotees in front of the temples and coloured powders are filled in and lamps are lit all around it.

H.H. Sri Bharathi Theertha Swamiji, after finishing the evening Sri Chandramouleeshwara Pooja, goes to the Malahaanikareshwara Betta around 10 pm. There H.H. performs the pooja and takes part in the Dindi Utsava when the deities are taken round the temple premises and H.H. makes pradakshinaas round the temple along with the deities, facing the idols and moving backwards to show respect to the gods. A special ceremony is then held at the garuda kambha where a big silk screen is erected, that is soaked in oil and tied up on a frame. The archaka after the pooja to the pillar climbs up a huge ladder and sets the screen on fire signifying the fire of jnaana burning away our ajnaanaa! Then the soot is applied on the forehead as 'rakshe' or protection to oneself.

After this H.H. along with the deities goes in a procession by foot on the main Bharathi Street to the accompaniment of Naadaswara. Devotees line up on either side of the path, on top of the houses to have Guru darshan. Many devotees bring in offerings to the Lord and to H.H. and receive His blessings. The whole street is decorated with mango leaves, flowers and coloured lights in addition to the three-tier oil lamps lit on either sides. The procession slowly enters the temple premises and sri Gurugalu goes to the Sharadambe temple, worships the Devi and the Devi is taken out in Dindi Utsava. Then Sri Gurugalu goes to the banks of Tunga river where Teppotsava is held.

The Deities are taken inside the decorated and readied Teppa - a modified boat. H.H. also enters the boat with the archaks and several assistants accomapnying sri Gurugalu. They are taken round to the accompaniment of naadaswara and other vadyas. Sky is lit up with fire works and it is a grand sight to see oil lamps lit up everywhere and colourful flowered lights flying in the sky at 12 midnight ! H.H. is taken to the other bank where a small temporary resting structure has been built for H.H. to sit and watch the proceedings. After several rounds the boat returns and once again the deities are taken out in procession and returned to the respective temples. Sri Gurugalu also retires to His abode.

HH Shri Abhinava Vidya Theertha Jayanthi

The Narakachaturdashi is the Jayanthi day (birthday) of HH Jagadguru Shri Abhinava Vidya Theertha Swamiji, the 35th pontiff of Sringeri Sharada Peeta. Special poojas are conducted on that day in the Adishtaana (Samadhi) by Guruji Shri Bharathi Theertha Swamiji.

Here are a few pictures of the decorated idol of HH Jagadguru Shri Abhinava Vidya Theertha Swamiji in the Adishtaana, where the purohit is conducting the pooja.

Here is an audio clip of all the disciples and purohits chanting vedas. At this time Guruji Shri Bharathi Theertha Swamiji was performing a special pooja to HH Shri Abhinava Vidya Theertha idol! This pooja was done immediately after the Chandramouleeswara pooja.

Navaratri 2008

on 1st and 2nd of october, my family and I were in sringeri to witness the very famous and auspicious navaratri celebrations at sringeri.
during navaratri, sri sri Gurugalu comes to the temple-side around 10.30 in the morning and gets back to narasimha vana only after the full day's programme. He makes the usual rounds to all the temples and then enters the sharadamba temple around 11.30 with the accompanying vaadya mela - beautiful nadaswara throughout. Sri Gurugalu Himself does pooja for the devi for over 1 and half hour. the temple will be jam packed to witness the pooja. after 12 noon, the lunch will be served at the dining hall for devotees who keep arriving to and departing from sringeri. pooja continues inside the temple and we have the option of eating either before the pooja gets over or after. the mangalarathi gets over by 2 pm and sri Gurugalu retires to His temporary camp, a newly built huge building adjacent to the new dining hall.

we need to be ready by 5 pm to have sri Gurugalu's darshan at this new building. there will be a long Q of devotees waiting to place their offerings at His Padukaas and receive His blessings. inspite of the hectic schedule in the morning, Sri Gurugalu sits there smiling all the while, talking to each devotee, listening to their outpourings and giving His abhayaashirwaada to all. every evening during navaratri around 7 PM the Devi is taken round the town in a Rathothsava. This new hall is big enough to accommodate 500 people to sit and watch the evening Sri Chandramouleeshwara pooja. the pooja gets over by 9 pm and immediately Sri Gurugalu goes inside to get dressed in the ceremonial durbar dress.

Sri Gurugalu came outside with all the glittering durbar dress and the diamond kireeta and diamond studded necklaces, and His PA sri Gowrishankar holding His hand and slowly helping Him to keep steps (it seems the whole golden dress and the jewellery and kireeta put together would be weighing more than 8 kgs!). then sri Gurugalu once again enters the sharadamba temple that is by now over flowing with devotees, packed in every nook and corner of the temple structure, waiting to have a glimpse of sri Gurugalu in durbar dress!

He then majestically does three rounds of pradakshine of the temple premesis inside, that too walking backwards, His assistants leading Him carefully, facing the Devi that is coming round in the golden chariot, to the accompaniment of vaadya and veda mantras chanted by hundreds of devotees and purohits.

at the end of three rounds, the devi is taken back to the shrine (this is the utsava moorthi devi) and sri Gurugalu climbs up the golden throne slowly that would be kept right at the centre of the hall, facing the sharadambe moola vigraha inside the gharbagudi. then starts the melodious chanting of few chapters of Devi mahatme (also called sri Chandi parayana) by one of the pundits. this goes on for over an hour and by 11 pm it gets over and mangalarathi is done to the devi and the prasadam given to sri Gurugalu by the archaka. the ceremony comes to a close when sri Gurugalu enters the garbhagudi, the screen closes and the Gurugalu lays down the durbar dress at the feet of sharadambe and emerges out in His usual saffron dress. He blesses all the devotees by raising His hand giving abhaya to all and goes out through the side door.

few of us devotees follow Him till the arch gate (bridge), we stood there singing till Gurugalu disappeared into his abode in the narasimhavana.............

those of you who have not yet witnessed navaratri at sringeri, may you soon be blessed with that opportunity and those of you who have already seen the celebrations, may you get many more chances to see it again and again!

I have been so lucky to have been present along with my family and witness Sri Sri Jagadguru Bharathi Theertha Gurugalu performing the entire Shankara Jayanthi Pooja in the Kundeshwara Temple in Kundapur on May 10, 2008. There was no camera or video restriction, hence I have captured the entire pooja to my heart's content! I really want to share this rare, once-in-a-life-time-opportunity with the entire world! I hope you all enjoy them.

This is the Shankaraacharya idol before the pooja begins, its being decorated by a disciple of our Guru.
