Check out the YouTube video below of the Google art wall contest submission from Google Taipei office! The entire art wall is a mosaic made of 1000 Rubik’s cubes! Wow! I wonder how long it took the geeks engineers in the office to twist and turn each Rubik’s cube to match the desired color/pixel! Granted, it’s only one side of the Rubik’s cube they have to do, but to design an entire wall using the 6 colors of the cube! That just sounds like a lot of work (and fun)!

While I’ve been out of the office on my maternity leave, Google had a contest in which different offices can decorate a wall (or part of the office) for submission. I missed all the fun in the Shanghai office, but here’s a YouTube video of the Shanghai art wall in the making.

Looks like the geeks engineers had a blast creating this piece of art! The art wall is a magnetic wall with 63 removable tiles of different creative art, including a white board, a chalk board, a cork board, a Legos tile, an electro-magnetic detecting LED tile, and many more. The wall is interactive, so Googlers can write, draw, play with, and rearrange the tiles.

Just another fun day (or several days/weeks) at the Google Shanghai office! As for me, I’m down to my last month of maternity leave and will be back in the office in September.

Friday was my last day of work. Sent out my last email and logged off at 10pm. I started going into labor soon after that (what timing!) and delivered a healthy baby girl at 4am.

Last December, my husband and I went to She Shan for a weekend getaway. She Shan is about an hour from city center and a nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

We drove there, using the GPS on my iPhone to navigate to our destination — Le Meridien She Shan Hotel. As I was looking at the map on my iPhone, I noticed a nearby landmark called Moon-river Art Pork! Yikes! 

Well, laugh no more. I’ve reported the bug to the Google Maps team, and the typo has been fixed!

Here’s an entertaining read about the lack of an em dash key on the keyboard.

Excerpt:

Why care? The em-dash is a fundamental unit of punctuation. We often fake it with a couple of hyphens, but it’s dreadfully ugly. You can fake an en-dash with a hyphen, and vice versa, and nobody but a typesetter will blink. But an em-dash requires visual distinction. God forbid that the em-dash’s unique function be gradually encroached upon by the comma, the semi-colon and the parenthesis, just because of an ignorant oversight at the dawn of the PC. It would be a tragic loss. There are some times when nothing less than an em-dash will do.

By the way, the shortcut for typing out the em dash is to press ‘Alt-0151‘ on the number pad. Unfortunately, my laptop doesn’t have a number pad, so I have to copy/paste the em dash from somewhere else. I admit that most of the time–like right now–I’m lazy and juts use two hyphens.
