If possible use an interfacing that doesn't require gobs of steam to adhere or melt the glue. Another option is to trim the armhole seam allowances and then bind them. You can cut bias strips of your fabric if it's really light, and do a Hong Kong binding with it. Thanks Kathy, I just used my own pattern for the tops. But they're easy to create. For the longer top I just drew the asymmetrical extension to hit on the hip where I wanted it.
