Many users which used the new iMovie 08 the update were very dissatisfied because of Apple decision to remove most of the fun transitions and effects that makes you say “Yup that was made on a Mac”. Apple saw a problem here and put iMovie 06 up for download on the Apple site for all iLife 08 users to download for free. Until now, Apple has now removed the iMovie 06 application from its web-site and is no longer availible to download.

Maintaining your Mac

Computer users the world over know what it’s like to buy a new computer which runs very fast when new, only to see it progressively slow down over time. The extent to which it slows down depends on various factors related to both hardware and software and ideally each computer would have to be examined in it’s own right to determine exactly where the problem lies.

It’s safe to say though that it is recommended that one carry out regular maintenance on a computer in the same way that you might carry out maintenance on a car which is in regular use. The more you use your computer, and the more data you accumulate, the more often you may need to carry out maintenance.

Many customers were enthusiastic about this new change, but if you wanted to update your songs to become DRM free you had to pay for all of them at once put so far only possible was the bought titles completely to be updated. Those us you with very large there would be very high costs involved in doing this. Rather inconspicuously it is now possible also individual titles is to be updated.

Appleinsider has learned that Snow Leopard will include tools that allow developers to write applications that can find your location, on your Mac, using the tools that were originally found in the iPhone SDK.

This new feature will allow applications to find your location and adapt to the location that you are currently situated, e.g it could switch your network profiles when you get to work and change them when you get home so you keep everything separate.

Since Macs don't have a GPS chip to utilize, the CoreLocation framework will use a Macs currently connected network to pin-point your location, similar to the original iPhone.

Some people who just couldn't wait to get their hands on the new iWork 09 and decided to go walk abouts on those "sites" so that they could get a pirate copy may have downloaded more than they expected.

The pirate copy's of iWork 09 may have contained a Trojan Horse which pose's itself as iWorkServices and also boots during startup, it broadcasts your Mac online and allows a remote user to connect without your knowledge and do what ever they see fit to your system. Made even worse considering that you gave it root access when you entered your Administrator password during installation so it can install additional applications as well as made changes to your current ones.

For the first time in the lifespan of iWork buying the retail boxed set of iWork 09 from Apple or one of its resellers does not require you to enter a license key when you first start any of the included applications.

Normally buying the box set will include the serial number and the installation CD but not anymore as all the retail copies are already "activated". The trial download copies however still require the use of a serial number which can be bought online and E-Mailed to you to enter directly into any of the Pages, Numbers or Keynote. Its that simple.

They replace the entire LCD screen with a new Matte screen and replace the bezel that surround the screen with a Matte version similar to the ones found on the Black Macbook's to match the new screen.

RIAA Court Case to be Streamed Online

The court case between Joel Tenenbaum and the RIAA for allegedly downloading copyrighted material is to be streamed live over the internet for all to see.

Joel Tenenbaum originally tried to settle the case with $500 instead of the 3,500 that the RIAA wanted if they were to settle out of court and they refused, after the case landed in court, he tried again to settle, this time with $5000 but RIAA had upped it to $10,500. When the law professor Charles Nesson and his students became involved things got interesting.

They have requested that the case be streamed live over the internet and while the RIAA is againsed this, the judge has approved it anyway. Finding it curious that the RIAA would want to keep something like this quiet as the threat of a lawsuit is generally enough to stop most people from downloading.

Wikipedia has started upgrading its servers with more storage space and server capabilities all with the money that was donated to fund this very thing. They are increasing upload limits, video and music limits.

Wikipedia at the beginning of 2008 had a mere 2TB of storage space to store the millions of pages of data that users contributed to the site and have bumped the storage space up considerably, to 24TB and 48TB. Upload limits have also been raised from the old 50MB limit to 100MB. Currently Wikipedia is using 5TB of the 48TB of storage they currently have.

The amount of people who were rushing in to download the new beta of Windows 7 was substantial enough for even Microsoft's servers to grind to a halt under the demand.

Because of the first few days of downloading didn't go so great, coupled with the demand of the Beta, Microsoft has decided to extend the availability of the Beta on their servers until the 24th of January so if you havn't got in there yet you still have time, after the 24th of January you will need to find other sources for your beta.

Sources at AppleInsider have been able to confirm that as of Tuesday at Macworld Apple will introduce the long awaited 17" Unibody Version of the Macbook Pro product line.

In a move that has surprised some, the 17" Model has been reported not to use a removable battery pack like the ones found in the 13" and 15" Macbook's, but instead use a non-removable battery much like the one found in the Macbook Air.

The Crew over at OFB has found that AT&T has been downgrading its EDGE/2G services to the weaker 1900MHz band.

The 2G service was using the 850Mhz band which was far superior to the 1900Mhz which is currently being employed at AT&T. The 850Mhz band provided a higher coverage area and improved signal strength indoors and in rural areas. Yep this includes you users of the original iPhone which doesn't have the 3G capabilities of the current version will have a decreased signal strength if you are on the AT&T network, unless you upgrade to the 3G version.

Softbank has released its 1-Seg TV Tuner for the iPhone so you can watch live broadcasts of your favourite tv shows on the move, the Tuner also provides its own battery for the extra power it requires to receive the TV signals and send it to the iPhone.

Unfortunatly the entire program is written in Japanese, including its manual and there are no other available language translations so finding the program in the Apple store is quite difficult using this link takes you directly to the application.

Googles Voice search iPhone Application "Google Mobile" which lets you do web-searches by using your voice, has a hidden menu called "Bells and Whistles" which they hid so cleverly into the application that no-one managed to find it so they wrote about it in their blog.

To get to the new Bells and Whistles section open up the settings page in the Google App and scroll down to the part where it says "About" then keep swiping your finger upwards, which can take a few attempts, if you just can't manage to do it, just keep trying and soon enough a new menu option will appear.

The iControl pad gives the user a "PSP Style" gaming experience, only with an iPhone instead. You slip your iphone into the case and it connects to the dock connector which allows the use of physical buttons to play games instead of using the touchscreen.

Revised Version of iPhone Unlock Released

When the iPhone unlock "yellowsn0w" was released it worked for some people and not for others. Some users had problems with phones that used STK (Sim Toolkit) menus and had to remove their simcards and reinsert them after the phones bootup otherwise they couldn't use them, this has been fixed for some users using the latest software, others will still need to remove their sim card during the phones bootup.

The yellowsn0w software has been updated to help users that couldn't unlock their phones successfully, the current version number is 0.9.5 and is still a beta version so there is a few bugs which could affect you. See the iPhone Dev teams blog for further details.

Media monitoring company Nielsen SoundScan has released an article relating to the drop in physical music media. They claim that physical sales of media such as CD's has dropped by a massive 20% in one year from 449.2 million sales to 360.6 million.

Nielsen SoundScan added that the steepest decrease came during fall where they expect an increase due to music being given as gifts. Possible reasoning to this fell into the delays of major music albums being released at the end of the year.

Sources at TUAW are confident that Apple will release a new Mac Mini at the upcoming Macworld but are still not sure on the finer details such as its dimensions but they are aware of some other changes to the Mini.

The Mac Mini will carry on the new designs found in the Unibody Macbook Line using Black Plastic and Aluminuim. It will have a "lip" like the one found on the Time Capsule and the optical bay will be hidden behind the lip. The lip also doubles as the cooling system so the vents at the back of the mini are no longer needed.

The rumors surrounding Steve Jobs health started when Apple mysteriously announced that they would not be attending any more Macworld conferences, Apple stated the Macworld trade-show was only a small part of how they reach their customers and they would use their Apple Stores and Apple.com website which worldwide over 3.5 Million people visit everyday.

Although this made sense it was also announced that Steve Jobs wouldn't be making the Keynote presentation at the 2009 Macworld and would instead be replaced by Philip Schiller one of Apples marketing executives. Why wouldn't Steve Jobs be speaking at the 2009 Macworld? Steve's speech making abilities are legendary, thousands upon thousands flock to San Francisco every year to see what Steve had in-store for them.

So that when the time comes for Apple to deliver the message of Steve’s demise, the companies name will not suffer. This could also be why Apple has pulled out of Macworld, without steve to create the hype, there won’t be any.

Some of the users who had waited a very long time for Apple to ship them their $99 Dual-DVI adapter have been having some glitches and technical difficulties just getting a smooth image on the external display.

There are already growing threads in Apples Discussion forums relating to this problem and some users are having difficulties with Apples own 30" Cinema Display so there isn't a Non-Apple Hardware compatibility problem here, as they worked perfectly without the new adapter.

The well known iPhone case manufacturer Vaja has now added an iPhone Nano category to its website, although no pictures were added to compare the possible sizes between the rumored Nano and the iPhone 3G.

These manufacturers gain a huge financial advantage by releasing protective cases on the day of product launches. As of yet they have not stipulated on when they plan to release the product but if the rumors on the iPhone Nano are accurate it could possibly be sometime around Macworld 2009.

Maintaining your OSX System

The Mac OS X Operating system has been designed to be one of the most secure and stable operating systems on the planet, it does this by automatically running maintenance scripts late at night when you are not using your computer, because of these scripts and the way that the system is designed, it assumes that you never shut-down your system and because these scripts are not being run while your system is powered off, everything that the scripts are designed to clean out don't get deleted and just clog up your system and slow it down. Through out this I will go through each of the scripts, what they do, how to start them from the Terminal as well as programs that can automatically perform those maintenance scripts for you.
