Learning HTML can give you the inside scoop on tagging - essential for SEO and Social Media Marketing. Here we tell you what Search Engines think of them and how they are best used with some best practice sprinkled in...

An understanding of HTML is critical in SEO and stands for HyperText Markup Language. One objective of HTML is to identify or tag specific parts of the page.

The most important tag gives you control over the public description of the page: the ‘title’ tag. Providing a short description of the page is so easy and search engines use them if you do. There are a number of useful tags you can use.

Search engines love tags

You need to make sure your tags are unique, afterall each page is unique, so each page should have a different title tag to describe each page. Seems obvious, but worth checking. In fact, make sure that each page across your site has unique description, title and keyword tags.

This will tell search engines that each page across your site is different and will help ensure that your content is indexed and out there for people to find.

Keep it real
Your tags must reflect the actual content on the page, get this wrong and you stand the embarrassment of upsetting search engines and consumers alike. Get it really wrong and you may find your page assumed to be guilty of spamming and perhaps your page may even be removed from Google.

‘tagging’ is an essential exercise that is part of the core of HTML. Other tags to use include header tags that are denominated as h1, h2, h3 and h4 where the numbers denominate the importance of the headline, h1 being first. It is important to keep them in order so that the first tag is h1, and h3’s appear after an h2. It is fine to have several h2’s, h3’s or h4’s although unusual. It is normal to employ just one h1 tag per page.

You can find out more about how to use h tags here: HTML basic

Here is a list of all available tags, their usage and their meanings: HTML tag list

We discuss how to use and plan key word usage in your pages and throughout your site structure. We also tell you how to find the most popular words online that could help you shape your copy to suit the mood of the moment...

Copy sells!
It should be obvious that the words that you choose can make all the difference. Online even more so than face to face. Online we can see the words that people type in, we can see the words that people search for - search engines tell what they are - search engines also tell us related words too. Online a search engines job is to line up resulting websites with the words that you type in. Those words are all it has to go on. Clever stuff.

In search engine optimisation worlds these are the keywords that we focus on. Knowledge is power and you have a world of power at your finger tips when you know what people are searching for. You can undertake market research - by knowing what people are looking for - it is a dream!

Key words will always be at the core of your online marketing programs. Whether you plan to market using blogs, pay per click or to achieve better rankings through search engine optimisation, you will need to know your keywords every step of the way.

Key words are not just important at the beginning, they are vital to your on going success whether you are optimising your website or blog, they all contain words and the words that you choose make a difference.

Hard words are generally the common words, like jobs. It would be difficult, though not impossible to optimise against that. One of our client successes is for the word jobs. Go ahead check it out, it can be done. But it is tough and potentially limiting - although probably not in this case.

Zeitgeist
You should study key words regularly to pick up the changing moods of the search landscape. Google helps with that too with their Zeitgeist - and that is a term worth searching for on a range of search engines, as they all have their different opinions and data to share.

Understanding your key words and all the words relating to them will help you to structure your website or blog content. It would make sense that if people are looking for your main keywords and you know that people were looking for related key words that you would include content in your site that related. It would at the very least make the site more interesting for consumers and that is the key to key words.

You must have content on your site that not only relates to the keywords, but most importantly, relates to your readers, as we hope this does.

Thanks for reading.

The first post in any new blog about search engine optimisation has to be about content. Content is the very air of search, content is where it all starts and content is one of the main things that you have complete control of...

When planning SEO, think from your visitors perspective. Plan the content of each page to reflect a specific focus with a specific outcome that your visitor would expect, and enjoy.

When your visitors come from a search engine appropriate content is easy on the eye when it matches their search term, this has always been key for SEO but is vital for PPC too. A natural flow helps satisfy visitor needs, providing the basis of trust.

Content is King

There is usually not enough content on most pages and what exists is often lacking in both volume and substance. Google has developed a system it refers to as its Quality Score, and it seems other search engines have taken this to heart too. So it is more essential than ever to get your page content on the button. Poor content planning is going to cost you a lot of money and potentially, lost opportunity.

Content needs to be designed to help visitors find what they want. In niche markets this is easier, as often there is little information around and any information that you supply will help your visitors. But when competition increases, or if you are looking to beat your competitors quality content counts for a lot.

In competitive markets, with commodity products, you will need to work harder to stand out from the crowd. In these cases you need to expand on the product description with sassy comments that suit your house style.

About five years ago we pioneered News Inclusion, it is much copied now - or better said - it is a development that has been widely adopted. Nowadays, we have devised around 18 different types of content inclusion to make sites both more search engine friendly, but most importantly, consumer friendly and this is an area worth studying, as this is where the competitive edge lies…
