Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Creating a cohesive layout with a lot of photos on it can be a real challenge, especially when the photos are taken on different days under different lighting conditions. One way to make the photos coordinate is to manipulate their colouring. For this layout, I changed the colour of all of the smaller photos and left the larger, focal photo in full colour. To do this I first clicked on my Foreground Colour and, using the Dropper Tool, I selected a brown from my background paper. Then I chose a picture by clicking on its thumbnail image in the Layers Palette, clicked Ctrl+U to bring up the Hue/Saturation window and checked the "Colorize" box. Then I moved the sliders until I was happy with the result. I wrote down the numbers in the Hue, Saturation and Lightness boxes and then repeated the process with the remaining small images, using the numbers from the first image. This way, all of my small photos have a similar colour palette.

We're suppose to know how to make all of your hurts feel better, make every bad dream you dream fade away, never to return, and make every sadness you feel turn into joy, but in reality we are learning about you at the same time you are discovering yourself. So, please be patient with us as we join you on your journey, and know that with each and every step we love you more than we could ever tell you. You see it's hard to put into words the "bigness" of the love in our hearts for you but we'll keep trying! Love, Mom & Dad

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To make my embellishments stand out more, I decided to create a white background around each one, making them look more like stickers. To do this, I first made sure my foreground color was set to white. With one of my embellishments highlighted, I went to Edit> Stroke Selection. I then adjusted the settings so that the width was 8 pixels and the location was set on "Outside." I then added a realistic shadow using Sarah Batdorf's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501. I repeated these steps with each one of my embellishments and word art.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create my blended background, I clipped my photo to Brandy Murry's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Background Blenders and used Brandie Valenzuela's Brush Set: Grungelle to erase some parts of the blender template and photo. I then merged the two layers and decreased its opacity to about 55%. Next I duplicated the merged layer and clipped it to Melanie Johnson's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Definition Masks.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted this layout to emphasize Caroline's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Stroke 9901 PSE. After I ran the stroke action on all of the photos, I wanted to maintain the artsy painted effect throughout. To do that, I chose ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Edgy, BOLD and overlayed it over my background, and I chose ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Artsy - Watercolor 1 to overlay my title. Normally I like tons of embellishments with many layers; this time I minimized the embellishments on the layout to keep the focus on the photos and the art effects.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To thread my ribbon through the wire mesh, I placed the ribbon on the layer above the wire mesh layer. I gave the ribbon layer a layer mask and reduced its Opacity so that I could see the wire mesh behind the ribbon. Making sure my foreground color was black, I then used my Brush Tool, with a small enough brush tip, to erase the part of the ribbon that I wanted to appear behind the wire. I zoomed right in so that I could erase carefully enough so as not to erase any other part of the ribbon. If I did this, I changed my foreground color to white and 'painted' back in the area I had erased by mistake. Once I was satisfied, I returned the Opacity of the ribbon back to 100% to check that it looked the way I wanted it to.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to leave quite a bit of "white space" on this layout, so instead of using the 12x12 version of Caroline Kaiser's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Squares and Strips, I opened the letter-sized PSD file in my 12x12 layout. Then, to get the cluster in the position I wanted it, I linked all the layers together and flipped the entire cluster by clicking Image> Rotate> Flip Layer Horizontal, then I moved the cluster to the lower left of the document. After I'd added all the photos I wanted, I deleted the unused layers of the template.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To achieve the look I wanted, I combined two papers into one. I first opened the gray paper and opened the black paper over it. Under Blending Modes on the black paper, I chose "Overlay" and 100% Opacity.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To get a faded effect of the background photo of Thomas, I put my photo onto my layout, set the Blending Mode to "Screen" and lowered the Opacity to be around 50%. I then took one of the brushes from Brandie's Brush Set: Worn Threads and with my Eraser Tool selected, I erased away a part of the edge of the photo until I achieved the desired look.

It's Time to Take Care of Me

During a class recently, someone said to make sure to get enough water and sleep. She encouraged us to take care of ourselves physically, so that we can be the best that we can be.

I agreed with her and didn't think much more about it - until later. She had given us some questions in class to ponder and, as I sat down to really think about them, I realized I couldn't even think. I realized how tired I was, how much my back and head hurt, and just how terrible I was feeling physically. I had been getting to bed late at night and still trying to get up really early in the morning. Many of those nights I had been woken up by children, too. I had been eating terrible in contrast to a few weeks ago when I was only eating good, wholesome food and my body could feel it.

Suddenly, the comments about making sure I was drinking water and getting enough sleep became significant. I realized how little importance I gave to making sure that my physical body is being taken care of more than anything else. I need to be giving all my time and energy to making sure that I'm eating well, getting to bed early, drinking lots of water, exercising and giving my body a break.

I realized that by not doing so, I was only able to do things half-heartedly rather than giving my best and my absolute all. I couldn't be creative because my mind couldn't even think, let alone come up with creative ideas and solutions. My temperament was short with my children, which could lead to lots of other problems. My spiritual side was suffering because I would fall asleep during prayers or scripture study, or only give a half-hearted attempt. Mentally, I was not there fully. Physically, I was running on low gas. I did not have the energy to do all I needed to do, but also to just play and have fun. I was also feeling side effects like headaches, back pains and the consequences of poor eating habits. My emotional side was running really strong. It seemed to get stronger when I was tired and run down - every problem, decision or response was bigger than it needed to be.

Everything was lacking and only done in a half-hearted way because I had neglected to take care of my body. This physical body has a much bigger role and importance in our life than we give it. We try to push it beyond what it can do. We abuse it and don't give it the care it needs. We don't give it rest and somehow expect that by doing all this we should be performing at our absolute best.

No more, I decided. Taking care of this physical body MUST become first in my priorities - the very first. I cannot give my best and my all to my family until I do. I cannot love God with all my heart and develop a strong spiritual life if I don't. I can't be creative and really develop my talents and come up with new ideas if I don't. Plus, I won't live a long life if I don't. I cannot be the best me until this physical body is taken care of.

My priorities have changed. I am trying to go to bed early, so I can rise early. I have been exercising every day to build and strengthen my body, but also to hopefully maintain a healthier weight. I am trying to be more conscious about what food I am putting into my mouth and how much I eat. I am trying to make sure I drink lots and lots of water.

The result? I am already starting to feel better. I am seeing a difference. I am more patient with my children. I'm not an emotional time bomb. I'm not as stressed. I have felt my spiritual side improve. I feel like I'm being a better me, a better mother, wife, disciple, friend and artist.

Do I succeed at this every day? No. Some days, I still stay up really late with my husband and feel the consequences the next day. Some days, I still eat junk food and feel it in my system. Some days, I add too much to my plate and stress myself out.

The difference though? I'm finally aware of it. I'm finally aware of what my body is telling me. It's about time - time to take care of me, so I can take care of them.

For many reasons, this will probably always be my favorite collection. When I created it, I wanted to create a collection about the real and true meaning of Christmas. I wanted it to have the feel of the sacred and incredible event that it was. While designing, it was one of the few kits that I've ever done that flowed easily from beginning to end and it turned out better than I ever hoped. It is the only kit where I got to truly share a huge part of myself, my faith and my love for the Lord, together in a finished collection. It's also the only collection I didn't care whether or not I sold any. I created it for Him, in recognition of what happened that Holy Night in Bethlehem and what is truly the most important thing in this world - the gift of His son.

Every few days, we'll give you a new theme and a searching task and then set you loose to start building our list in alphabetic order! For each item you correctly add to our alphabetic list in the game thread on the message board, your name will be entered into a drawing which will be held at the end of the month. Spiky Hair

I have wanted to write this muse for a year. Today is the day. As I sit here at the second Scrap Girls convention, I have been reflecting on the last convention and the impact both it and Scrap Girls has had on me.

On February 14th, 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Little did I know that I was headed for a very long year of health issues that didn't have anything to do with cancer.

With just one chemotherapy treatment, most of my hair came out. It took a few months for it to grow back. My hair came back in and I was still wearing hats or a wig I had purchased. On the first day of the 2008 convention, I had a hat on. The next morning, when I was coming to the convention, I felt comfortable enough to finally "style" my short hair.

The reason I felt comfortable was because of the atmosphere that has been created in the Scrap Girls "arena." I didn't feel like I had to be someone I am not. I felt like I could be who I am, short hair and all, and still be accepted. Ro has been so diligent in creating that atmosphere, I am confident that many people feel the same way I do.

I was staying at my sister's home and she encouraged me to style my hair with some gel and spikes. I did so, knowing I would be comfortable when I got to the convention that day. I received a lot of compliments. Valerie Randall gave me an especially important one. It was about someone our age having the hairstyle I did. She will never know how much that meant to me!

Since then, I have debated about changing my spiky hair, but my 16-year-old daughter says I can't because it's my "trademark!" So, it stays, for now.

Thanks to Ro and all of the Scrap Girls for how important you have become in my life. Ro, you are very caring and concerned about all of us and it shows with everything you do.

UNIVERSITY UPDATES

Over the last few months, I taught three different classes. We re-ran the "Out of Bounds" and "Kaleidoscope" classes and introduced our new class "Stunning 3D Text."

Our kaleidoscope class was fun and brought new ideas on using unusual source photographs. One lady used photographs of crystals; something that I had never seen or considered before. These photographs made the most amazing kaleidoscope designs.

The "out of bounds" technique continues to be a favorite to use on layouts. It was a challenging class to teach online, but enjoyable because of the exchange of comments, ideas and enthusiasm. This is a very versatile technique that can be used over and over again and in ways that may not have been considered possible. A good source photograph is often overlooked simply because an understanding of the technique is required. The gallery of layouts for this class clearly shows that the technique was wholly mastered by our students, with many students emailing ideas and questions on how to take it further.

Our new "Stunning 3D Text" class proved to be a winner. Making basic 3D text is simple, but enhancing the basic extruded text is up to the individual, making it unique to each person. The students were so inspired by this technique that discussion ensued on how to take this further and incorporate it onto a layout.

In the "Stunning 3D Text" class, Nancy designed a beautiful layout featuring her granddaughters - Abby and Kate. The 3D Text shows manipulation of the letters in different directions, some great extractions and Abby sitting on the letter "B" of her name.

Jane made a fabulous layout featuring her son skateboarding along their steep drive. This layout certainly took the "out of bounds" technique the extra mile. It shows amazing depth through clever use of the source photo and the balance of Jane's overall design.

Looking at the class galleries is inspiring and a pleasure. I enjoy seeing how students have developed the various techniques in their own way, resulting in unique layouts. I continue to feel enriched by the enthusiasm of our students. These classes prove to be both fulfilling and satisfying as a teacher and the feedback I receive indicates that our students feel the same. I hope to see you soon in one of our online classes.

I have often read that studies show that the majority of successful people exercise. Every time the information surfaced, I tossed it my mind's trunk, vowing to examine that fact at a later date. Maybe I left this information in my trunk full of random facts because I hadn't considered the question in a serious way.

I assumed I already knew the answer. I assumed successful people exercised because they need to look fit when they are hob-knobbing around with other fit, successful people. I assumed that they have personal trainers, home gyms and water-bearing minions who follow them around, offering sips of designer water out of designer straws stuck in designer bottles. Of course, this exercising happens while the successful one manages their international business while talking on a cell phone.

Oh brother.

This year, I have been examining all of my assumptions. I realize that in some areas of my life I occasionally operate with faulty logic. Last spring, when I read once again that successful people exercise regularly, the key turned over the engine of my mind and I shot out of the fog-filled driveway I was stuck in.

I knew the answer.

Why do successful people exercise? Why are they more successful at exercising than most people? Conversely, why are people that exercise more successful? I think it's because they don't give up easily and they don't talk themselves out of doing things that are good for them. They make time to do things that are worthwhile. They understand that taking care of themselves is a worthwhile endeavor and that not exercising will ultimately get in their way.

When I realized the truth, the windshield wipers in my mind started to work and I suddenly saw the road I need to walk on. I have been operating under the faulty assumption that I am selfish and unproductive when I exercise. I have been telling myself that I need to do more important things during the time I would spend exercising. It's embarrassing to admit that to you.

The morning after I had this revelation, I put Molly on her leash and we set off for a long walk. We climbed up to the top of a large hill. I huffed and puffed up that trail, but I felt like I had won an Olympic gold medal when I stood at the top, looking over the valley.

I stood there a long time that day, wishing that the feeling of satisfaction in a job well done could last forever. Suddenly, my reverie was interrupted by the sound of a cell phone ringing. Surprised to get a call (I don't get many) I said, "Hello, this is Ro," with the very best I-am-successful-sounding voice I could muster.

It worked, too. I could tell that the telemarketer on the other end of the line was very impressed with me.

I guess that shows you what a little exercise can do.

P.S. I wish I could tell you that my experience sent me into a whirlwind of exercise and activity. I wish I could tell you that I am now fit and toned. But, I can't and I won't lie to you about it. I have Fibromyalgia and, as a result, I occasionally struggle to get through the day. I've been struggling with my Fibro a lot during the past few months and it has prevented me from doing all that I long to do.

But, someday, I'll feel better again and when I do, I've got a hill to climb.

DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING TUTORIAL

Clipped Boards

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP.

Have you ever wanted to clip items onto a digital scrapbooking clipboard? When you have completed this tutorial, you will have one similar to this. For this tutorial, I will be using the joy clip from the Assemble Your Own: Clipboards.

First, arrange the items under the clip. I am using the Christmas lights and black and white ribbon from the Cheery Christmas Collection. In the screenshot, you will see part of the clip overlapping the embellishments when it should look like it is underneath.

On the Layers Palette, duplicate the clip by dragging it onto the new layer icon at the bottom of the palette. Drag the duplicated clip layer below the layers of embellishments. Here, you will see that the top clip layer is named "joy top" and the bottom clip layer is named "joy bottom." Click on the top clip layer to activate it for the next step.

Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the area of the clip that you want to erase.

Click Ctrl+X to delete the selected area of the top clip. The bottom clip will now show under the clipped items. Add a drop shadow to the top clip layer and you are done.
