Glasgow Uni 5 Mile Folk Tak the Gate

Almost 230 runners competed in the Glasgow University 5 Mile Road Race held in North Glasgow at 2pm on Saturday, November 7. The numbers were down slightly from last year but the quality of running was definitely up, as last year's winner Chris MacKay illustrated by taken 22 seconds off of his time to retain his trophy in 24:02. The 25 year old Inverclyde runner held off a strong challenge from Central's Alistair Hay, the UK's top ranking U23 over five miles, who claimed second in 24:09. Kilbarchan's Ross Tool took 33 seconds off of his PB to earn third place with 24:40, ahead of the first student, Glasgow University's Matt Gillespie who celebrated his recent 19th birthday by taking an impressive 73 seconds off of his PB to finish in 24:47. At the other end of the scale was Kilbarchan's 42 year old Tom Hearle who finished 9th overall and won the veteran's race with a time of 26:10.

Nat's the Way to Do It!

Parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt and his wife Joanne returned to Scotland at the weekend to participate in the 47th Glasgow parkrun. They joined with another 381 runners who participated in the two Scottish parkrun events on the morning of Saturday, November 7.

This was Edinburgh's 4th parkrun and course record holder Neil Renault returned to the scene of his victory three weeks previous. Again there was no stopping the Commonwealth Games contender as he led from start to finish over the scenic 5k course. However whilst the English born marathon runner finished five seconds ahead of the opposition, there was to be no repeat of his record breaking effort as he finished in 15:11, twelve seconds slower than his course best. In Glasgow it was Irvine's Pat Cullinane who returned to his parkrun best, equalling his course best time of 17:13 to win the 47th Glasgow event at the fifth time of asking.

Neil Sets New Record at Eddie's Half

Neil Renault won the Eddie's half marathon at Fort William on Sunday, November 1 in a course record of 67min 25sec. Fort William had come to a standstill the evening before the race, with floods making many roads impassable. The down pours had eased on race day and the forecasted gales failed to arrive to the relief of both the organisers and the runners.

Closing Date Nears For First Kilomathon

Standard entries for the first Kilomathon to be run on March 14 from Nottingham to Derby will close on November 15 so if you want to be part of this historic event get your entries in now. Standard fee is £29.50 (£27.50 for affiliated runners) while the late entry fee is £34.50.

New Records, New Course and Fierce Competition at the 40th Allan Scally Relays

The Allan Scally 4.8 Mile Road Relay (Incorporating the Scottish University Road Relay Championships) celebrated its 40th anniversary on Saturday, October 31. Although this year's course had to be changed the event proved as successful as ever with 52 full teams participating. The new trail took the runners around the Mount Vernon and Sandyhills areas of Glasgow and finished very near the old Shettleston Harriers clubhouse.

Someone Old, Someone New at Scottish parkruns

Some 364 runners took part in the two Scottish parkruns on the last Saturday in October, the more established Glasgow event attracted 198 competitors, whilst the younger Edinburgh parkrun attracted 166. Pitreavie AAC's Jeff Farquhar was the first athlete across the Glasgow finish line with his club mate Alex Keenan earning second spot in Edinburgh, behind Falkirk's Anthony Devlin.
