25 Days in Mayan Country

It’s Thursday afternoon and I’m preparing for my 25-day trip through the ancient ruins of Guatemala and El Salvador, which will be my 40th and 41st countries. I’m kicking this trip off in Guatemala City and I hear it’s a bustling capital city full of parks, markets, and museums. Though I have traveled for longer, this next month will bring a few challenges such as the heat and the grueling transportation schedule to cover as much ground as possible. Once I’m delivered safely to the El Salvadorian border I’ll only be half-way done with this Central American adventure.

Both tourism boards are providing me with a guide and transportation. I can’t wait to shoot hours of video with my GoPro strapped onto the car, snap incredible images and blog about my time spent in Central America. Since it is the year that the Mayans predicted the world would end, there has been an increase in tourism to these areas. Their amazing civilization has undoubtedly left its mark on the world and I can’t wait to bring it to you in my city guides and videos.

Luggage Loopholes: 5 Creative Ways to Avoid Airline Fees

If you’ve ever found yourself on a packed Friday afternoon flight heading from one major city to another, you’ve probably fallen victim to travelers who’ll resort to anything, maybe even a little physical violence, to snag space in the overhead bins. Perhaps you’re guilty of a bit of pushing and elbowing yourself. And who could blame you? Baggage fees are one of the greatest rip-offs in modern air travel, and to avoid them, passengers are stuffing their carry-on bags to the seams, fighting off anyone who threatens their precious overhead space.

But as a recent New York Times article points out, there are much craftier ways to skirt those exorbitant fees. Here are some of the clever loopholes travelers have embraced to defray their transit costs.

Use vacuum-seal bags to save space. Removing air can help shrink your items to about a third of their original size, making it much likelier that you’ll be able to carry on, or at least check fewer items.
Choose airlines with no fees. It often requires a decent amount of dedication to the cause, but can help save a considerable amount of cash. One traveler said she drives 50 or 100 miles to airports where she can fly Southwest, which allows two free checked bags, or JetBlue, which allows one.
Get an airline-branded credit card. Several airlines waive baggage fees for cardholders. The cards are also likely to offer additional benefits, like special airport lounge access, double-mileage points and priority boarding.
Store your stuff in a trench coat. Clothing company Scottevest offers a variety of travel-specific items, including a “Carry-On Coat,” complete with 33 hidden pockets. It allows you to subtly store everything from your toiletries to your iPad. Plus, it’s machine-washable, and even includes hand-warmer pockets.
Take the train. Not really a loophole, but it can be a good alternative to domestic flights. Amtrak’s baggage policy, for example, allows each passenger two carry-on items at up to 50 pounds each. And for a $5 fee, travelers can bring aboard special items like bikes, ski equipment and musical instruments, without letting the more fragile items out of their sight.

Let’s face it: Those dreaded airline fees are now as much a part of the traveling experience as long security lines. But that does not necessarily mean that passengers always have to pay them.

As the airlines come up with ever more inventive fees, travelers are figuring out creative ways to avoid them.

The fee for checked bags seems to vex passengers the most. To avoid it, some travelers stuff as many items as possible into a carry-on bag and then fight with other passengers for space in the overhead bin.

Others, like Eileen Ogintz, will drive 50 or 100 miles to an airport served by Southwest Airlines or JetBlue. Southwest makes the first two checked bags free, and JetBlue allows the first bag.

Mrs. Ogintz was helping her daughter, Melanie, move to Colorado for college in the fall of 2009 and quickly discovered that the price of hauling the baggage across the country was almost as much as buying another ticket. “I would have easily spent hundreds of dollars” getting six bags from Westport, Conn., to Denver, Mrs. Ogintz said. That was when she discovered that Southwest Airlines did not charge for the first two bags.

So rather than fly out of La Guardia Airport in New York, as she originally planned, Mrs. Ogintz, her husband and daughter drove an extra 25 miles to fly out of Hartford, at the time the closest airport to offer Southwest flights. “We were able to check all six bags for free between the three of us,” she said.

Mrs. Ogintz, a blogger who specializes in travel, has been writing and campaigning against the fees ever since.

Other travelers are avoiding baggage and other fees by taking out an airline-branded credit card, where the benefits include checking the first bag free, getting free access to special airport lounges (a perk that can cost up to $100 for two passes), receiving double-mileage points for every mile flown on that airline, and priority boarding before other travelers, eliminating the battle for overhead storage space.

Some cards offer sign-up bonuses of as much as 40,000 miles, annual $99 companion certificates and 20 percent discounts on in-flight food, beverages and entertainment. But passengers need to weigh the benefits carefully, since many of these cards charge an annual fee that ranges from as low as $55 to as much as $450.

An entire cottage industry has emerged for products that help people evade the baggage-check fees, according to Kate Hanni, director of FlyersRights.org, a consumer organization that represents airline passengers. Ms. Hanni uses vacuum-seal bags inside her carry-on bags, she said; the bags, which shrink down to a compact package when air is pulled out by a vacuum cleaner, allow her to fit considerably more items in a carry-on than would normally be possible.

“I can fit three times the amount of clothes in a carry-on than I used to be able to,” she said.

There is also the Scottevest line of travel clothing in which trench coats, vests and other garments are made with large built-in pockets that allow people to carry everything from folded shirts to an iPad.

“You can fit all of your folded shirts, iPad, cellphone, iPod, sunglasses, camera, passport, keys — you can put everything in the jacket that you would put in a carry-on, and you won’t have to pay a carry-on fee,” Ms. Hanni said. “People are so angry about the bag fees, and I know a lot of people have bought them. It’s sort of sweet justice.”

If you have heard of Scottevest, you probably know them for their jackets. What you might not know is that they also make pants. I recently got pair of Hidden Cargo Pants from Scottevest. When you think of Scottevest you think pockets and when you think of cargo pants you think pockets, yet these pants don’t scream pockets. I have to confess, it took me a while to get used to wearing these. I’ve been traveling the last 5 years with “travel pants”. They type with tons of pockets on the outside and they look like something you’d get at an outdoors store. The SeV hidden cargo pants, however, could easily pass for normal khakis. The hidden pocket is a second pocket, doubled up in the front. The pockets are deeper than normal pant pockets, so my change doesn’t fall out when I lay down. Having worn them for a month now, I wouldn’t want to go back.

They have also released their first new product of 2012: a brand new women’s jacket called the Molly Jacket. Unfortunately, I can’t speak from first hand experience with this product, but my assistant Amy is getting one and will be reporting on it soon.

When taking photos in cold weather, batteries will not work at peak performance. One thing you can do is keep your extra batteries close to your person. By putting them in a pocket in your shirt, rather than in your jacket or camera bag, they will be kept warm by your body heat and will perform better when inserted into your camera. You’ve heard me talk about SCOTTEVEST before. I love their coats, and love them even more since they made my dad a finalist in their “Trip of Your Life” contest (we should be hearing any day on the winner! Eee!) Wearing Your Luggage: An Unbiased Review of SCOTTEVEST

When I'm on a long trip that requires me to check luggage I absolutely hate to have to worry about a carry-on. Moving through the airport and in and out of security and customs with a bulky carry-on can be quite a hassle, especially when you reach the destination and then have to pick up your checked bag as well. On a recent trip to London I decided to find out if I could manage to get there without bringing a carry-on. I knew that I would need to bring a few items along, and that I would also need something to carry my gear around while I was out enjoying London, but I didn't want to necessarily carry a bulky bag or a backpack. I decided to take the next logical step and opted for pockets.

Lots and lots of pockets.

I found all of the pockets that I could possibly need at SCOTTEVEST. They design and sell apparel with all sorts of pockets. Need to carry your phone? Your passport? Your camera? Your headphones? A guidebook? Some extra money? You'll find clothing on that site that will allow you to do that and more. I ordered the Tropical Jacket/Vest, which has 18 pockets and is one of the lighter weight items that SCOTTEVEST sells. The jacket also allows you to carry a bottle of water upright, and it has a pocket large enough to hold an iPad.

That's me in London wearing my SCOTTEVESTNow here's what you're probably thinking: "Wow, that guy must have looked ridiculous with all of those things crammed into his pockets." You may be right about me looking ridiculous, but it was certainly not because of the jacket. The jacket was a basic black windbreaker with nothing strange or noticeable about it. I loaded up all of my gear into the jacket and was pleasantly surprised. It was designed to conceal everything so well that you could hardly tell that I had anything inside my jacket at all!

My least favorite part of flying is going through airport security. The jacket made getting through security a breeze. I was able to simply slip the jacket off along with everything in it and put it into the bin. I picked it up and put it back on when I got through and was on my way to the gate. It made for the most convenient TSA experience that I've ever had.

Personal security is always an issue when you're traveling internationally, and I think that SCOTTEVEST's products stand up well here too. You can carry your passport and spare currency or credit cards in an inside pocket that is reasonably accessible, yet is secured with a zipper and would be very difficult for a pickpocket to access without you noticing. Never again will you need to wear one of those inconvenient belts that require you to remove clothing in order to access your money.

If you're going to go the SCOTTEVEST route, here are a couple of things to keep in mind. Buy it a size larger than what you normally wear. After all, it's not just you that will be fitting inside; it's you and a dozen of your favorite travel items. In addition, I would recommend opting for a lighter option rather than a heavy one. In London the mid-November temperature was considerably warmer than normal and with all of the walking and moving in and out of the Underground stations I never felt like I needed anything heavier. I even removed the sleeves at times and just wore it as a vest over a long sleeved shirt. If it does get cold, you can always add another layer of clothing inside the coat since you selected a larger size. I would also recommend that you consider also carrying on a small bag if you're taking along a tablet or netbook. Even though many of the SCOTTEVEST products have pockets designed especially for these technology devices, the weight of those items compared to everything else makes the jacket a little awkward.

I paid for my SCOTTEVEST out of my own pocket and this is not intended to be an advertisement for SCOTTEVEST or its products. It is, however, definitely something to consider when you're trying to make traveling hassle free. Not interested in a jacket? There are many other choices available as well, including both men's and women's apparel, shirts, hats, ties and even undergarments that have concealed pockets. I think that anything that can help you get through security a little quicker and make your traveling a little more convenient is a good thing.

The SCOTTEVEST Women's SeV Chloe hoodie is a fine introduction to their travel clothing as it's cute and stylish while also being practical with it's amazing 13 pockets!

Scottevest produce great travel clothing but realize we don't all want to look like we're on safari but would like the practical aspect of lots of pockets, when visiting a city or even for everyday wear.

I'll be upfront now and say I really like Scottevest clothing and have already reviewed theSCOTTEVEST Women's Trench Coat and theSCOTTEVEST Women's Lightweight Vest and even though I love these items, the one I'm refusing to take off is my Chloe hoodie.

Describe It

The Chloe hoodie is made of 100% Poly Microfleece which means its soft and warm. It's machine washable and dries super-fast too which is why I've hardly missed a day wearing the hoodie since it arrived.

To make it even more snuggly, there are plush fleece cuffs, hood lining and inside the hand pockets. I'm not a girly-girl but I chose the elephant grey hoodie with its pink lining and I'm really happy with it. The hoodie also comes in black with black lining so you can still be all dark, if preferred. You can wear it with folded back cuffs to show the (contrasting) plush fleece lining or leave the sleeves long and use the thumb-holes for warm hands too!

The main zipper is the same colour as the hoodie and has no end so you can zip yourself in completely! I'm not sure if that will ever be necessary but it is nice to pull it up high around your neck, and it stays, to keep you warm.

Sizing
With the other Scottevest items I own, I'd ordered the next size up thinking I'd need to do that as I was concerned I wouldn't be able to fill the pockets and wear the clothing comfortably. It wasn't necessary and this time I ordered the right size (according to the Scottevest size chart on their site) and I'm pleased I did as the hoodie feels like it was made just for me.

Friends ask to see this amazing hoodie I've been talking about, thinking it'll look like travel clothing, and then they are amazed that it's the one I'm wearing and that's why I'm not carrying a bag most days!

Pockets

Okay, they say the hoodie has 13 pockets so let's check.

On the outside there are two deep hand pockets which can be closed with a zip. The zip is the same colour as the lining and doesn't feel cold or rough which is a great bonus for cold hands. There's that lovely plush fleece lining on one side and the side against your body is normal lining fabric. Inside one of these pockets is an extendible, removable key holder. This doesn't have to be removed for washing and mine has survived many washes already. There's also a small velcro-closed pocket to hold a lipsalve/lipstick. Over to the other deep hand pocket and there also another small velcro-closed pocket in there which could be used for loose change. I've not been using these mini-pockets as this time I'm not sure if the lining is strong enough for me to be pulling these open and closed all day long. Note, these pockets are on the normal lining fabric side. So that's four pockets weve counted and with the zipped-up hand pockets there would be no way to know the hoodie has so much going on inside.
Moving inside, there's a pen pocket on each side and the Personal Area Network (PAN) system which keeps your earphones tangle free as it threads through the clothing and into BudBuckets: an earbud pocket on each side. What's the point of having your earphones if you've not got your mp3 player/phone so there's a zipped pocket for this with internal access to the lead so no need to leave a pocket undone.
The internal pockets have handy labels suggesting what could go inside such as the eyeglasses zipped pocket which I use for my sunglasses (London weather is eternally unpredicatable) and there's even a chamois cloth on a fixed-in elastic cord so I don't take it out and forget to replace it.
The last pocket on this side is the zipped pocket for a digital camera and I tried this out for a few weeks when I reviewed the Canon Ixus 230 HS. I was thrilled the camera was stored safely yet it was really quick to access. Within the camera pocket there's another lining pocket for a spare memory card and there's a button hole but I've not yet worked out what this is for.
On the other side there are two pockets. One is for travel documents and I've used it for passports and boarding passes with no problems. Then there's a deep inside pocket that's big enough to hold an iPad, Kindle or small netbook. Not having these high tech items, I used this for more travel documents: printed itineraries, etc.

So, let's count up the pockets: two handwarmer pockets and two internal pockets (four), two pen pockets (six), two earbud pockets (eight), glasses pocket (nine), camera pocket with memory card pocket (eleven), travel documents pocket (twelve) and deep iPad pocket (thirteen). They weren't joking!

Weight Management System
When all the pockets are loaded you may think you'd feel bulky or lopsided but there's an inbuilt Weight Management System in the shoulders so the weight is evenly distributed.

Traveling or Everyday
I'm using the Chloe hoodie for everyday casual wear and am not always using all the pockets but I have tried filling them all for overseas travel and found it a huge benefit at security checks as I could simply remove my hoodie and didn't have loads of loose change, keys, phone, lipsalve, etc. in one of those small trays for the scanner as everything was held inside the hoodie.

Security In A City
In London we are advised to keep our valuables in zipped pockets and pickpockets don't stand a chance with this many secure pockets. A bag is much easier to snatch than an item of clothing you are wearing.

Conclusion
I'll admit I don't want to take my Chloe hoodie off ever again - I really do love it! It's a perfect introduction to Scottevest clothing and is so comfortable I'm happy to wear it all the time and not just when traveling. As I head to CES 2012, I want to share the gear and gadgets that I am taking on the trip. CES is a major event that pushes gear and connectivity to the limits.

While I won’t carry all of this gear to the show floor every day, I have stuffed it all into a Tom Bihn Brain Bag that rests by my feet at around 38,000 feet as I make my way to Vegas.

The two biggest issues at CES are battery power and connectivity, which is why you see so many batteries and so many Verizon 4G LTE devices in my gear bag. I also have an array of photo and video gear to get content up to GottaBeMobile and Notebooks.com quickly.

The Gadgets and Gear I am taking to CES 2012.

Here is all the gear I am taking to CES 2012. I’ll only carry one of each gadgets while on the show floor, but you can never have enough packed for a trip like this.

MacBook Air 13″ – The long battery life, high screen resolution, compact size and Intel Core i5 processor give me enough power to edit photos and videos from the show floor without killing my back.
Toshiba Portege Z835 – Primarily on the trip for text editing, I don’t even know this thin and light notebook is in my bag.
iPad 2 - Though it is WiFi only, the long battery life gives me extra productivity options on the go.
iPad Bluetooth Keyboard - This $30 Bluetooth keyboard offers decent performance and doubles as a slick looking case.
Motorola XYBoard 10.1 w/ Verizon 4G LTE - Android tablets are still not my primary choice, but it’s hard to argue with long battery life, an integrated 4G connection I can share with my laptop and a nice form factor.
Galaxy Nexus – I am taking the Galaxy Nexus as my primary email device and another hotspot. It is also paired with my WIMM One watch so I can see texts and phone calls.
iPhone 4S - The iPhone 4S will sit inside the ALM OWLE Camera Adapter to help me streamline videos at CES 2012.
ALM OWLE BUBO with RODE Mic - You might wonder why use these accessories instead of a dedicated video camera, but the answer is simple. With the iPhone 4S and the camera adapter I can shoot good looking HD video on the iPhone, edit it with iMovie and then upload it in HD quickly to YouTube. Much faster than importing and exporting on the computer at a busy show like CES.
Mophie Juice Pack – For extra iPhone 4S power on busy days.
Kensington BungeeAir Power – Added battery power and a nicer feel than Mophie.
Spare Galaxy Nexus Batteries – 2 standard batteris and one extended in the phone.
Innergie Magic Cable – an iPhone Dock Connector and Micro USB will allow me to charge the iPhone or the Nexus without packing an extra cable.
Ethernet Adapter – WiFi is spotty at CES, so if there is a wired connection available I want to be able to connect and upload videos.
5 Hour Energy – Just like gadgets, I need portable power too.

Mobile Video setup for CES 2012

In addition to the gear you see above, I have a large collection of items that didn’t make it into the photo. This gear is just as important and will be along for the ride.

Nikon D5100 + Spare Battery – For product photos and the occasional video, this camera is a workhorse at an affordable price.
Manfrotto Monopod – Longer and heavier than I would like for travel, but will do the job.
ScotteVest Travel Fleece – How do I carry two phones and all this gear without spending a fortune on checked bags and killing my back? With the ScotteVest Fleece 5.0. I don’t travel without ScotteVest.
RotoLight – This LED light will attach to the OWLE iPhone camera adapter and Mic to light up products and faces of people we meet at the show. Way better than your standard flash.
WIMM ONE – This smart watch syncs my calendar, can be used to pay for coffee at Starbucks, displays text messages, caller ID information and much more. Hello future.
Samsung Stratosphere – The Samsung Stratosphere that I recently reviewed has made the trip as well, primarily as a backup in case other devices die or hotspots are finicky.
80 power adapters – Even consolidating with great cables and USB adapters, I have more wires in my bag than you’ll find at a mall cell phone shop.

Is This the Ultimate Trench Coat for Gadget Lovers?

As we get closer to CES 2012, I’ve struggled with how to pack all of the requisite gadgets and electronics I’ll need on my trip without breaking the carry-on restrictions that the airlines insist I follow. This year, I’ve found my solution: A trench coat with a secret identity.

Late last year I stumbled upon a SCOTTEVEST women’s trench that looked enticing — and almost too good to be true. As with other SCOTTEVEST products, the idea is to hide as many devices as possible, its pockets designed to accommodate electronics and gadgets with aplomb.

SCOTTEVEST promises that a normal looking women’s trench coat can store an iPad, two smartphones, camera, glasses, keys, travel documents, change and lipstick. The map indicates you can store a good sized water bottle inside the jacket.

I was skeptical, but too intrigued not to order the coat. The results? Check it out for yourself.

I was able to comfortably store the following in the coat:

I also had plenty of room for a small camera, complete with separate MicroSD pocket.

So will this serve as my purse at CES 2012? I think so. Shockingly, the coat wasn’t very heavy, even with the iPad, phones, camera and other gadgets. This will allow me to keep my laptop bag lighter on the days I need to carry it on the show floor.

The coat doesn’t look bulky from the outside either, though I’d certainly be careful stowing it with the gadgets still inside. It’s lightweight and definitely not warm enough for New York City in January — but it should be just fine for the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Since the dawn of time, man has yearned for a jacket that can organize and store all of his gadgets…and then someone said “Let there be ScotteVest!” We have just reviewed the Men’s SeV Puffer Jacket (also made for women), and we’re happy to say it comfortably fits and organizes all of our gadgets, peripherals, and other items while still looking super stylish!

The ScotteVest (SeV) Puffer Jacket features a whopping 19 pockets. If you think that’s impressive, ScotteVest makes jackets with up to 37 pockets! From the looks of it, you’d never expect the Puffer Jacket to be such a crafty organizer, it’s a short and lightweight jacket that only displays two pockets on the outside. It has a cool quilted pattern made of 100% nylon.

It’s no surprise that ScotteVest features pockets within pockets, inception-style. One front pocket features a detachable elastic key ring, a change pocket, and a loop to stand a water bottle in place. The other pocket features a zippered pocket within. The two front pockets technically run all the way up the jacket, so if you can fit it through the zippered opening, it will fit in the pocket. These front pockets even function as “hand warmers”. The rest of the ScotteVest magic happens from within.ScotteVest has incorporated their patented “personal area network” into the Puffer Jacket. This is essentially a cord management system to wire a pair of headphones inside the jacket. Headphones become easily accessible and will tuck safely out of sight (see pictures); it puts an end to wrapping, winding, and tangling headphone cables. The ScotteVest also features a “weight management system” and “no-bulge pockets”, but we just chalk this up as good design; nothing special.

On the inside of the SeV Puffer Jacket, there is a ClearTouch pocket on either side for storing a phone and/or music player. The clear pocket is touch-friendly for your touchscreen smartphones and devices, though the plastic could be clearer. There’s a clear ID card pocket right below. Aside from the iPad/tablet pocket (!), my favorite pocket might be the sunglasses/eyeglasses holster. There’s no extra protection for your glasses, but it’s a dedicated pocket complete with a cleaning cloth on an elastic cord. Another unique, and nerdy, pocket is the memory card pocket; it has a velcro seal and can fit a few SD or similarly sized memory cards.

Most of the other pocket on the inside have dedicated uses, but in reality it’s going to come down to whatever fits. These pockets include the “PadPocket” for large tablets, digital camera pocket, USB/Bluetooth pocket, travel document pocket, and a few pen pockets. There’s really a lot of room to store any of your devices, peripherals, and other items. Since pockets run up, down, and all around the Puffer Jacket, you can prevent bulging and maintain an inconspicuous physique.

The Puffer is really quite comfortable. Even when it’s filled with gadgets it sits nicely, though you’ll want to try to distribute the weight evenly on both sides. It’s really a light jacket, but it can be pretty warm. It won’t cut it for winters in New York, but it’s a great fall and spring jacket. It’s also a great travel jacket considering you can crumple it into a small ball and it barely weighs anything. It was so comfortable that I found myself forgetting to take it off when going indoors.

Unless people were just being nice, I received a favorable number of compliments on the Puffer Jacket; and people had no idea of what this “jacket” is capable of. As a tall and slim man, I ordered the extra-large. Length was the determining factor in size. The XL extends just below my belt, and is a little loose around my mid-region. The hem cinch cord helps the fit, plus now I just have extra room for gadgets!

The ScotteVest SeV Puffer Jacket is truly a tech-enthusiasts jacket. Let’s be real, no one wants to throw their cell phone, iPod, camera, sunglasses, change, and extras into one or two pockets; that’s how gadgets get broken. The number of differently sized pockets really allows you to get creative with the amount of gadgets and items you can comfortably store in the ScotteVest. Also, with the iPad/tablet pocket you’ll be much safer than walking the streets with a satchel or bag. You just have to be careful where you leave the Puffer, no one expects a jacket to be filled with gadgets and it probably won’t protect all of your gadgets from a nice drop. Of course you do. Why else would you be reading my blog? I routinely walk around with iDevices, Android devices, cameras, gps units, chargers, cables, batteries, etc. Normally these items are in my pocket if they are small enough or in my computer bag if they are larger items. When I travel I almost never check my luggage. If I do check a bag, it's a bag of clothing and never a bag with gear in it. At the same time my carry on bag has to be small enough to fit under the seat in front of me. Since I'm now tasked with carrying more and more devices for work and having to carry a smaller bag due to the ever decreasing space under the airline seats I'm always looking alternative ways to carry stuff. I read a review from a friend of mine on the Scottevest line of clothing. I've seen "geek wear" before and had no interest in integrating gadgets into my clothing. I still don't have any interest in "wearable tech." However, I am very interested in clothing that is simply designed to carry more of my tech gear. That's exactly what Scottevest jackets/vest are to me.

It's my 3rd carry-on

Scottevest jackets have on average 20+ pockets in them. They are designed to carry today's portable electronic gear and at the same time not showing visible bulges. That last part was pretty hard for me to believe. That was until i got one. The Scottevest clothing doesn't just have a bunch of pockets, It has a bunch of pockets that are carefully laid out to provide optimum storage and accessibility while providing minimal visible bulge. They thought of the little things. For example the two inner breast pockets are see through on the inside so that you can see and operate touch screen devices. Also you can run a set of earbuds through the inside of the jacket up to the collar where there is a special set of flaps to completely hide them when you're not listening to music/making calls. They put a screen cleaning cloth in one of the inside pockets on a string to allow you to quickly wipe your touch screens or camera lenses. There's even a pocket large enough to carry a tablet like the iPad. I first thought: "NO WAY will that not show from the outside!" While I don't really plan to carry my iPad 2 in my jacket, I did have to try it. OMG! It actually does fit and doesn't show from the outside.

What's in my pockets?

To date I have carried my: Kodak Zi8, Motorola Atrix, Mophie Air iPhone 4 Backup Battery, Holux GPS module, iPad stylus, keys, iDevice sync cables, iPad charger, boarding pass, passport, business cards, 2 ink pens, cash, and yes on occasion an iPad 2

Added security

While on my latest international tour I realized that the Scottevest has an additional benefit. It allows you walk around with gear that isn't showing to the general public. Granted, it doesn't hide a DSLR, but it can hide just about every other valuable that you're carrying.

The Bottom Line

Is that while I have jackets that I like to wear, the Scottevest has become my new favorite travel jacket. They come in a variety of styles and materials for both men and women.
