The questions is: how IE 8 stands up to its major competitor FireFox?

The answer may not be so easy. Our tests showed that IE 8 performs better and faster than its predecessor (version 7); rendering pages faster, complying with the Standards, processing Java Script better, using its tab system more efficiently.  But… it still feels like Internet Explorer is just trying to be FireFox and Microsoft did not invent or revolutionized the browsing experiencing.

Some of you may disagree.

Well, new IE features nifty ability to group the related pages opened in tabs by applying same colors to tab groups. And, yes, there are web slices, built in “suggest similar site” drop down and cool search window with pop-up results. However, these features are not inventions but nearly built-in extensions and I bet next version of FireFox add-ons will mimic these functions exactly or even better.

Power Search

Do not forget hundred of FireFox add-ons, large community devoted to improve the browser and strong fan base. I also need to mention widely spreading dislike tendency toward Microsoft’s browser.

The IE 8 will be popular enough so Microsoft’s executives will have material to say: “we did it again”. But this comes from the fact that Internet Explorer comes with every Windows installation and may people won’t bother to check alternatives. Version 8 will be pushed by automatic updates and web site logs will start showing growing usage curve. Web developers will end up cursing the situation because they will have to write their web pages supporting yet another browser.

Some sources report that MePhone will be released in February this year, however, this has not been confirmed by Dell.

Everyone is asking what would make Dell’s mobile device different from what is currently available on market? Apparently MePhone will focus on user’s customization, however, no official reports have been released when comes to details.

And the question is how MePhone will stand against already strong competitors such as IPhone, Blackberry or T-Mobile G1.

With offline Gmail in Labs, Gmail now works even when your Internet connection doesn’t.

This may prove troublesome, especially for laptop users on the buses, trains or airplanes without Internet connection. That is why many business oriented users are choosing dedicated e-mail clients such as Outlook to get back to saved messages, calendar, etc. Google says: not anymore!

Google has announced that offline access to Gmail is now available and is being rolled out for users in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

Gmail offline came freshly baked from Google Labs and will allow users to not only read and archive old emails but users will be able to compose emails that can be sent automatically the next time the computer connects to the Internet.

Also, we have great news for individuals recording schedule in Google calendar. The company is curently working on integrating calendar with offline version of Google as well.

I wonder where this puts Outlook? Will offline services from Google eliminate a need for dedicated e-mail clients? Will Microsoft follow Google’s idea and bake something similar into their existing Windows Live?

“We are at a point where we have more than enough beta testers and feedback coming in to meet our engineering needs, so we are beginning to plan the end of general availability for Windows 7 Beta,” said Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft’s in-house Windows blogger, in a post Friday.

Finished version of Windows 7 will be released in late 2009 or early 2010.

Many online Windows 7 reviews indicate a positive change in overall performance, speed and compatibility over Vista. It is clear that Windows 7 is targeting dissatisfied Vista users who at least tried Vista once and abounded it for XP. Version 7 is also optimized for use on laptops.

The best thing about the Windows 7 release is that it won’t require any drastic upgrades to computers used today to run Vista.

A $22.5 million cash settlement agreement was reached in late October and a court has preliminarily approved the agreement, said the plaintiffs attorney. CES 2009 has come to a close, and this year’s show has been anything but disappointing. We saw the release of the Palm Pre, Palm’s new smart phone, a tiny notebook from Sony, and a general trend towards production of more affordable gadgets.

Xacti 2009 launch were held in several cities around the world. With this release Sanyo is focusing on shooting great images as well making great video footage. Sanyo Canada’s Bryan Asa emphasized that the company views dual cameras as being “the next generation for digital cameras”, so consequently, these models were made with equal focus on both functions in mind.

New design includes attractive features for nor both entry-level and advanced users. For one, Sanyo is, for the first time, employing traditional camcorder design concepts, having made half the line horizontal in orientation.

The specs certainly back up Sanyo’s claims of equality: video resolution on all models is high-definition (at least 720p), and still image capture on most models is 8-10 MP. The company has also announced several improvements to internal mechanics, including a new multi-blur canceller, 3D digital noise reduction and “Face Chaser” technology; Sanyo’s version of face detection. The VPC-TH1 and ‘WH1 models even incorporate an impressive 30x zoom!

Pricing ranges from $269.99 all the way up to $749.99, and all six models will be available in March.
