We don't teach Filmmaking. We make Filmmakers.

Training courses are at the heart of the Raindance structure, aiming to give individuals the tools to get out there and start shooting their film. Raindance combines the best filmmaking traditions with new digital technology – a policy that works.

The Bad Dog Theatre offers Youth Improv classes

In the Youth Improv classes, students learn the fundamentals of story-telling, create their own characters on stage and gain the confidence to show off their new-found skills.

There is a showcase at the end of each session, where participants perform on the Bad Dog Mainstage for family and friends.

Adult ESL in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga

The Peel District School Board serves more than 150,000 students in kindergarten to grade 12. The Peel board operates 332 schools in the municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.

The Adult ESL is a skills-based language program called "Language for Life".

Here are the courses Peel offers:
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Listening and speaking
- Reading and writing
- Computer for ESL learners
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Preparation
- ESL Co-op for Accounting Basics, Business English and Customer Service

All students must pay a non-refundable, non-transferable materials fee, per session, per period as follows: ESL classes $30.00, TOEFL $35.00, Microsoft (Day) $55.00 and (evenings and weekend) $40.00.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Foundation courses

Foundation courses promote the development of verbal, written and technical communication skills in relation to others in the family, the community and beyond. The learner will have opportunities to describe, compare and represent his or her view in a multicultural environment.

Communication courses

Intermediate communications courses promote the development of verbal, written and technical communication skills in relation to participation in Canadian society and preparation for on-going learning. The learner is encouraged to use the language while becoming actively involved in the various contexts of life in Canada.

Advanced courses

Advanced courses are designed for higher-level learners and promote the development of verbal, written and technical communication skills required for further education or employment training. The learner has the opportunity to use and apply the language to prepare for specific goals. These courses consolidate all previous instruction and provide review where necessary. Skill development includes conversation, grammar, reading, writing and test preparation.

Listening and speaking

Basic
Students will improve listening and speaking skills through the use of role play and dialogues, which will expand vocabulary knowledge and the ability to communicate more effectively. Learners will also have the opportunity to practice spoken English in both formal and informal situations.

Intermediate

The course will improve the learner's ability to speak more confidently and enhance their listening comprehension. Some of the skills to be covered include: developing effective telephone techniques, conveying information, stating opinions and building conversation strategies. Attention is paid to the correct use of idiomatic language. Students practice how to express themselves through short presentations and group discussion.

Advanced

Advanced learners will gain accuracy in their formal and informal spoken English, in addition to developing active listening strategies. Appropriate language style, the use of advanced vocabulary, popular expression and body language, clarity and pronunciation are some of the skills that are emphasized. Students participate in group discussions and learn effective techniques for individual presentations.

Reading and writing

Basic

The course is designed for students who have intermediate speaking skills but require extra help with reading, writing and spelling. Emphasis will be on the development of word attack skills.

Intermediate

This is a remedial course for advanced speakers whose reading and writing skills do not meet the requirements for the advanced level courses. Students will learn parts of speech, sentence construction and paragraph organization, in addition to functional and practical uses of reading and writing.

Advanced

In this course students will refine oral and written skills for professional advancement or to access higher academic training, for example, at university or college. The class teaches verbal and written skills as tools, which work hand in hand for effective communication. Emphasis will be on essay writing for TOEFL.

The overall aim of the course is to build the students's languages confidence, develop techniques in summarizing, note-taking, grammar usage, editing and vocabulary expansion. Students are expected to have attained a satisfactory command of both oral and written English skills covered in previous ESL classes.

Computer for ESL learners

Comprised of two ten-work courses, the goal is to increase English language skills through basic computer skills taught on the widely used Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint). Students planning to enter college, university or the job force need very strong Microsoft skills. There will also be internet training on how to navigate the web, a general overview of workplace issues including ESL and job search websites.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Preparation

The TOEFL i-b-t course is designed to prepare students for the Test of English as a Foreign Language, which is used by Canadian universities and professional licensing bodies to establish proficiency in English. The course will cover key areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing (essays and summaries) and vocabulary.

Business English

This is an advanced course designed to enhance proficiency in English and build confidence in business communication. Business vocabulary will be expanded through discussions and case studies. Other areas taught include telephone etiquette, the interview process, presentation techniques, business protocol, banking and financial terms and popular language. Learners will practice and refine writing of memos, letters, minutes and business reports.

Accounting basics

The course is designed for ESL students with accounting, bookkeeping or business experience and need to learn related English vocabulary, Canadian accounting rules and basic financial preparation. This is a two-part course in which students learn and practice manual and computerized accounting.

Basic Keelboat Cruising Course(36 hours)
Completion of the course to satisfactory standard enables one to be a competent skipper on a vessel up to 8 meters. Monday thru Thursday 09:00 to 17:00 Prerequisite None.

Basic Keelboat Cruising Course (5 day live-aboard)
Same course content as above Monday 09:00 to Friday 16:00 Prerequisite None.

Intermediate Cruising Course (5 day live-aboard)
This course leads to competent skipper on a vessel up to 11 meters. Monday 09:00 to Friday 16:00. Prerequisite - Basic Keelboat Course, Coastal Navigation Recommended

Advanced Cruising Course (7 day live-aboard)
This course leads to competent skipper in all weather and day & night cruising. Saturday 12:00 to Friday 13:00 Prerequisite- Intermediate Cruising Course, Coastal Navigation, VHF, and Practical Experience.

Offshore Cruising Standard (7 to 10 day Live-aboard)
This course leads to a competent skipper and crew for offshore sailing in all weather conditions for at least 500 nautical miles and using Celestial navigation. Prerequisites- Advanced Cruising Standard, Celestial Navigation Standard, VHF Radio Certificate, Nationally Recognized First Aid CPR Level "B" or higher Certificate, Advanced Navigation Recommended.

BOATING OPERATOR CARD
Learn the safety fundamentals of Boating for power or sail. Full 12 hour course $85.72*. Challenge with review $47.62* Challenge exam $28.57*. Classes available now thru Oct 30 days evenings.Dates and times to be arranged.

REGULATIONS for Age and Power Restrictions
· Under 12, unaccompanied by someone 16 or older, maximum engine power 7.5 kw (10 hp).
· 12 - 15, unaccompanied by someone 16 or older, maximum power 30 kw (40 hp).
· People under 16 may not operate a personal water craft.

Competency Regulations
· All Youth born after April 1, 1983 are NOW required to carry the card.
· As of Sept. 15, 2002, anyone operating a powered recreational vessel less than 4 meters (13 feet) in length (including personal water craft) must obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
· As of Sept. 15, 2009. all powerboat operators must obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
· Previously-taken boating safety courses may be recognized, and experienced boaters may take a challenge test without taking a course. Contact OSA or your course provider for more information.
· Foreign visitors with a pleasure boat in Canada will be granted a grace period of 45 consecutive days.
· People renting a vessel must complete a dockside checklist.
Operators must obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card and carry it with them at all times while operating a power boat.

REMEMBER ANYONE UNDER 16 YEARS MUST HAVE THE CARD TO OPERATE A POWERED VESSEL! EVERYONE MUST HAVE IT BY SEPT. 15, 2009

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program provides basic language instruction in one of Canada's official languages to adult immigrants as soon as possible after their arrival in Canada, so that they may acquire the necessary language skills to integrate into Canadian society.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To be eligible under LINC a person must be: an adult immigrant (older than legal school leaving age); either a permanent resident or a newcomer who has been allowed to remain in Canada, to whom CIC intends to grant permanent resident status and who has not acquired Canadian citizenship.

DESCRIPTION

Before language training can be provided, clients must be rated to determine their level of language proficiency. The Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA) is used for this purpose. It is based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks, a set of task-based level descriptors of English language ability.

The CLBA provides an indication of the amount of training which may be required for clients to achieve the LINC Program outcome competency level. LINC training consists of a number of instruction levels and may be full or part-time, workplace or community-based, and uses alternative methods such as distance education and computer-assisted education.

Where necessary, transportation and childminding assistance may be made available to LINC participants for whom language training would be otherwise inaccessible.

Clients may participate in LINC for up to three years from the time they start training. LINC aims to have the same proportion of women and men participating in its program as is reflected in the local immigrant population.

Term of agreement

Agreements for any funding component may be signed for a period of up to twelve months.

2008 Toronto English Plus Summer Camp

The 2008 Toronto English Plus Summer Camp will operate in July to August 2008.

ESL in Canada has made arrangements for special ESL English classes to operate at some of the attractions and events to supplement the in-class English school lessons.

This 2008 Toronto English Plus Summer Camp program is open to international tour leaders who wish to travel to Canada with their students.

Participants can choose programs from 1 to 21 days. The listed planned events can be switched or altered to accommodate bad weather or to attend extra special events.

Day 1

Arrival in Toronto. Orientation, English Level Tests.

THE BEACHES INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

Day 2

Dinosaurs Alive! – the largest display of animated, life-size dinosaurs in the world, only at the Toronto Zoo. Get up close and personal with sixteen moving, roaring and startlingly realistic dinosaurs, featuring such prehistoric playmates as Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and many others, complete with authentic sounds and special effects.

Day 3

Toronto's CN Tower is celebrating 30 years as the Worlds Tallest Free-Standing Structure. About 2 million visitors soar to the top of the Towers incredible 1,815 feet (553.3 meters, or 181 stories) each year. Recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers along with the Panama Canal and Golden Gate bridge, the Towers record has gone unchallenged. Vocabulary

A Vocabulary File at the end of the book gives students the opportunity to revise core vocabulary from the Course Book units under topic headings. There is further vocabulary practice in the Practice File.

Discussion
There are a number of discussion activities which are designed to build up students confidence in expressing their views in English and to improve their fluency. Discussion topics include: ‘Talk about your favourite brands’, ‘Rank a list of unethical activities’ and ‘Discuss the importance of cultural awareness in business’ (Market Leader Intermediate) among many others.

Reading
Students read new articles from the Financial Times and other business sources. They develop their reading skills and acquire essential business vocabulary. The texts provide a context for language work and discussion later on in the unit.

Listening
The authentic listening texts are based on interviews with business people and experts in their field. Students develop listening skills such as prediction, listening for specific information, and note-taking.

Language Review
These sections develop students’ awareness of the language problems common to their level of English. They focus on accuracy and knowledge of key areas of grammar. Students can use the Grammar reference at the end of the Course Book and there is further practice in the Practice File and in the Business Grammar and Usage book.

Communication Skills
This section helps learners to develop their communication skills in the key business areas of presentations, meetings, negotiations, telephoning and social English. Each section contains a Useful Language box which provides students with the support and phrases they need to carry out the business tasks in the regular role play activities.

Case study
The Market Leader case studies are linked to the business topics of each unit. They are based on realistic business problems or situations and encourage students to use the language and communication skills they have developed while working through each unit. They give students plenty of opportunities to practise speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in realistic contexts. Each case study ends with a follow-up writing task. These tasks reflect the real world of business correspondence and will also help those students preparing for Business English exams. Each review unit is designed to recycle and revise material covered in the preceding Course Book units.

Practice File
This gives extra practice in the areas of grammar and vocabulary, together with a complete section in business writing. In each unit students work with text models and useful language, then do a writing task to consolidate the learning. The practice File provides regular self study pronunciation work (with an audio CD and exercises), and a valuable Business English survival language section.

Audio materials

The Rocky Mountains are famous around the world for their beauty and recreational opportunities. Many of our students come here to learn English and to experience the natural environment but others come here to find work while improving their language skills and enjoying the nature around them.

The Rocky Mountains are famous in Canada for being the preferred destination in Alberta. Alberta is experiencing an economic boom and the demand for workers is extremely high. Our Work Programs allow students the opportunity to experience work in Canada while exploring the beauty of the Rockies.

We offer two programs focused on work.

Internship Program: This program combines English instruction with paid work

Tour Guide Professional Program: This 1-month program prepares students for work in guiding in English and in their native language.

Internship Program

Study English and earn money. Our Internship program focuses on English education and work placements in the following areas:
· tourism
· the environment
· resource management
· community development
· sustainable and organic production
· hospitality
· park management
· education

It is not always easy to understand the process of finding a job in Canada. We offer an easy way for students to improve their English and acquire paid experience in a real English-speaking work environment. Homestays are also available for short- or long-term stays. Internship Fees: $750

This fee is in addition to program and accommodation fees and includes:
· assistance with Study and Work Permit applications with local Canadian Embassy or Consulate
· job skills training in:
· resume preparation
· interview skills
· workplace language
· assistance in acquiring a Social Insurance Number
· preparation and arrangement of interviews for candidates
· access to office supplies and equipment (fax/copier/PC/etc)

Conditions and Procedures

We can arrange paid internships but paid internships may not be available for all applicants. The Letter of Acceptance will include the practicum or work requirements of the program. The student will then apply for Study and Work Permits through the appropriate Canadian Embassy or Consular Office. There is no additional fee for the Work Permit portion of the application. Also please note:

· the study portion must contain at least 15 hours of classroom instruction per week
· the study portion must be the same length or longer than the internship portion
· the work portion must be an integral portion of the academic portion (work must be in English)

Tour Guide Professional Program

This four-week program is designed for international and Canadian students who hope to work with English in the Tourism Industry. It is often difficult to find employment in tourism, which requires experience, strong language skills and specific qualifications.

English classes will be held in the morning from 8:30-11:30 covering topics such as; tourism-related vocabulary, guiding language, confidence in public speaking as well as resume preparations.

These classes are open to students of all English levels. In the afternoon from 12:30-15:45 students will enjoy guide-training classes including field trips with professional guides. On Fridays, there will be full-day sightseeing tours and students will gain more knowledge about the Rocky Mountains.

Tour Guide Training Professional Program Topics Include:
· resume preparation
· the people, geography and attractions of Canada
· directions and general inquiries
· effective telephone communication
· airlines, airports and air tickets
· hotel services and amenities
· checking in and checking out
· the language of hospitality staff
· types of rooms and accommodation
· scheduling and keeping schedules
· tourism and eco-tourism
· receiving complaints and offering apologies
· Parks Canada services and management
