Erasmus Mundus: European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis.

The European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis aims at providing a high quality education in designing and assessing public policies targeted to the agricultural and food sector as well as the rural environment. This European Master responds to the increasing need to better understand and anticipate the various and often complex socio-economic and environmental effects of these policies either in a functioning market economy as in the European Union or in economies in a development or transition phase.

The European Master offers a two-year academic curriculum with integrated and advanced theoretical, methodological and empirical courses in economics and quantitative methods as well as in agricultural, food and environmental sciences, agricultural and trade policy, environmental and natural resource policy, rural development policy and agribusiness management and market analysis. To connect theory and methodology to practice, a problem solving project is developed and presented as a master thesis at the end of the two-year curriculum.

The European Master is jointly organised by five leading European educational and research institutions: the Corvinius University of Budapest (CUB) in Hungary, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Sweden, the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn (UBonn) in Germany, the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain. These five partner universities are recognised worldwide for the quality of their educational programme and scientific achievements in agricultural, environmental and economic sciences.

The required 120 ECTS credit points are structured into three blocks: a minimum of two semesters of studies (55 ECTS) at a first partner university, as well as two semesters of studies (60 ECTS) at a second partner university, and two joint summer schools (5 ECTS) at partner universities. The language of instruction and examination is English for most of the courses in three partner universities while it is either French at UCL or Spanish at UPC for most of the courses. The Master degree is awarded as a double degree from the two home and host universities.

Recipients of this European Master are qualified to understand the fundamentals of public policies oriented to the agricultural and food sector, rural areas and natural resources, develop and use quantitative methods to perform rigorous socio-economic and environmental assessment of these public policies, and provide sound and relevant policy recommendations for a more sustainable development of this sector and rural areas.

They are qualified to take responsibilities in international, national and regional agencies, non-governmental organisations, consultancy firms, professional organisations and private companies.

Senior Research Scientist – Quantitative Economist.
We are looking for a versatile quantitative economist to work with an existing group of development and agricultural economists to provide clear advice on future directions for fisheries and aquaculture in key development arenas, such as food security, climate change adaptation and trade policy, at national, regional and global level.The position is initially for Three Years, and is renewable, subject to performance, future requirements of the Center, and availability of funding. It is envisaged to start in the last quarter of 2010 or beginning of 2011 at the latest.

Key Responsibilities
Within the Policy, Economics and Social Science discipline, the successful applicant will:

Provide leadership in the application of quantitative analytical methods – econometric analysis and modeling – to fisheries and aquaculture development issues.
Develop and lead research projects using supply-demand modelling of fishery and aquaculture products and services, with emphasis on identifying how trade can benefit poverty reduction and food security while minimizing negative impacts on environment and equity;
Contribute economic analysis skills to projects on climate change vulnerability and adaptation
Contribute to political economy analysis of fishery and aquaculture development programmes and potential impacts of alternative policy options
Develop and maintain collaborative networks and partnerships with national and regional fisheries research and management organizations in WorldFish programme countries and relevant advanced research organizations to undertake the research; and
Provide input of technical skills and research direction to multi-disciplinary team projects on fisheries and aquaculture, progressing to project leadership, management and administration, budgeting, staff supervision and coaching.

Skills and Abilities
Essential

Technical skills in econometrics and modeling
Good knowledge in using quantitative analysis packages (SAS, R or similar software), Microsoft Office applications;
Demonstrated research innovation, publications in internationally refereed journals in economics and related disciplines,
Ability to identify, conceptualize, fund and undertake relevant and innovative scientific research;
Ability to communicate with fisheries managers, policy makers, fishers and other relevant stakeholders and convey scientific information in a format they understand;
Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, particularly with social, policy and environmental scientists;
Ability to recognize and react accordingly to work issues related / arising from different cultural contexts; and
Proficiency in English language is essential – both in writing and orally.

Desirable

Knowledge of economic modeling of trade flows;
Experience with monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment methodologies;
Proficiency in use of databases (Microsoft Access, Oracle) and GIS software (e.g. ArcView);
Evidence of impact of own research on management or development issues;
Evidence of ability to establish networks among development economists, coastal natural resource, environmental or ecological economists, policy actors and donors is advantageous; and
Working knowledge of French, or knowledge of one or more African, Asian or Micronesian languages relevant to WorldFish programme countries.

Qualifications and Experiences

PhD in Economics or related sub-discipline with at least five years postgraduate research experience in economic analysis of agriculture, trade, natural resource management or environmental governance;
Experience in project leadership and management, including multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and multi-country projects is advantageous; and
Demonstrated record of inter-disciplinary, partnership and team-building and the desire to work in a collaborative environment.

Title PhD Project: Growth, development and production of Jatropha curcas in Indonesia.

“JARAK: the commoditization of an alternative biofuel crop in Indonesia”. The program comprises research on policy, legislation, technical crop qualities and production possibilities, and socio-economic impact of Jatropha cultivation in Indonesia and is part of a broader research program funded by NWO and KNAW on “Agriculture beyond Food”.

Tasks

* To engage in supervised scientific research that will ultimately result in a doctoral thesis;
* To carry out a systematic literature analysis related to the relevant PhD;
* To conduct field research in Indonesia;
* To prepare and submit research output for publication in peer-reviewed international scientific journals;

* Master degree in plant sciences, with demonstrated interest in statistics, agro-climatics;

The successful applicant will be awarded a research fellowship under NUFFIC conditions for 4 years, with continuation dependent upon an evaluation after 12 months The fellowship consists of a 6 month period in Wageningen at the start of the project, followed by an extended period of field work and a final period to write papers and submit the thesis in Wageningen. The TOEFL® test is the most widely accepted English-language test in the world (more than 7,300 institutions in 130 countries including the U.K., U.S. and Canada). No matter where you want to study, the TOEFL test can help get you there. The test is divided into four sections – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Here are some pointers and resources to help you get on your way to score well for the test.

1.Find something interesting to read and listen to, then practice speaking and writing about it.
Listen to Podcasts, recorded lectures – check the website of your favorite University. Go to news websites and read up on your favorite subjects on popular. Tell a friend or family member about what you learned.

2.Work with a speaking partner, preferably with a native speaker of English or try an online video chat! The more opportunity you have to speak the language, the more familiar you will become.

3.Take on the role of a great journalist: Take good notes and use them to make summaries.

4.Make vocabulary flash cards and pretend you are a contestant on a vocabulary quiz show. Carry the flash cards with you often. They are a great way to make a bus ride go by quickly.

5.Visit TOEFL-TV on YouTube for great resources and tips from English language instructors and students that have taken the TOEFL test.

6. Reading Tips
Practice summarizing and paraphrasing texts. Use charts and outlines to organize the ideas in a text. Practice speed reading techniques. Practice reading (and answering questions) on a computer screen. Expand your vocabulary with daily-use vocabulary cards.

7. Listening Tips
* Listen for basic information – did you comprehend the main idea, major points and important details?
* Listen for “pragmatic” understanding – Can you recognize a speaker’s attitude? What is the purpose of the speech? What is their role? Are they an authority or are they a passive part of the conversation?
* Listen for connecting and synthesizing – Can you understand the relationship between ideas? Compare and contrast. Determine the cause and effect.

8. Speaking Tips
* Read aloud a short article from a newspaper, campus newspaper, magazine, textbook, or the Internet. Write down 2 – 3 questions about the article.

The “Chinese Government Scholarships — Postgraduate Study Project”, set up by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE), is intended to provide support for building universities to an international high level, and to promote Chinese higher education. Enrolment is managed directly by China’s key universities. The MOE has entrusted the China Scholarship Council (CSC) with maintaining the enrolment records and handling the routine management.

Categories of applicants and duration of scholarship

Master’s Degree Students ----- > 2-3 academic years
Doctoral Degree Students ----- > 3-4 academic years

Note: Courses start in September 2010.

Scholarship details

1. Full scholarship:
- Exemption from registration fees, tuition fees, laboratory experiment fees, any internship fees, and costs of basic course materials and accommodation on campus;
- Living allowance;
- One-off settlement subsidy provided following registration;
- Out-patient medical services charges together with membership of the national Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China.

Notes:
1) Students are personally liable for expenditure on any laboratory experiments or internship costs over and above those arranged by the university.
2) Students are personally liable for expenditure on any course or other materials over and above those prescribed by the host institution.
3) A monthly living allowance is paid by the host institution to scholarship students at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):
- Master’s degree students: CNY 1,700 Yuan
- Doctoral students: CNY 2,000 Yuan
4) The one-off settlement subsidy for new students who enroll for one or more years will be of CNY 1,500
5) Re-imbursement of out-patient medical services refers to such expenses incurred at the institution’s hospital or at a hospital appointed by the institution. Students may be required to pay a certain percentage of such expenses in accordance with the relevant regulations imposed by the host institution.
6) The Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China is provided by MOE to cover hospitalization in the event of serious illness or accidental injury.
7) Students are personally liable for their international travel expenses

Eligibility

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.
2. Applicants must not be not studying currently at a Chinese university — students already studying in China can apply for a Distinguished International Student Scholarship provided by the CSC.
3. Educational background and age limits:

- Applicants for master’s degree courses must hold a bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.
- Applicants for doctoral courses must hold a master’s degree and be under the age of 40.

Anne McLaren Fellowships 2010

Applications are invited for these prestigious postdoctoral fellowships funded by the University and targeted at excellent women scientists and engineers, under-represented in these subjects, who wish to establish a research career in the UK . The Fellowships will commence in October 2010.

As this scheme offers a recognised first step into an independent research career, candidates must have submitted a PhD (viva does not need to have taken place) and have had no more than four years full-time postdoctoral experience by 1 October 2009. Career breaks such as maternity leave, EU national service and Voluntary Service Overseas can be discounted but teaching experience and/or time spent in industry since the award of a PhD should be included in the total amount of postdoctoral experience. Part-time appointments would be considered on a pro-rata basis. Individuals who have been promised or already have a permanent position are considered to have achieved the aims of the scheme already and will not be eligible. The scheme is designed to offer support and flexibility.

Each fellowship offers:

• Two years independent funding for research to be based at the University of Nottingham .
• The possibility of holding appointments on a part-time basis or of converting from full-time to part-time and back again to help match work and family commitments.
• The possibility of claiming some funds for family support where these can be justified on scientific grounds, for example, cost of childcare during a conference or collaborative visit abroad.
• The possibility of reclaiming maternity leave.
• The option of participating in a mentor scheme and career advice as required.

LIPI adalah lembaga ilmu pengetahuan milik negara yang mendapatkan otoritas tertinggi untuk melakukan kajian dan penelitian ilmiah di Indonesia. Untuk itu LIPI menanungi 47 satuan kerja dengan kompetensi kajian ilmiah atau sebagai pendukung kegiatan ilmiah yang spesifik untuk masing-masing satuan kerja.

Syarat-syarat :

* Warga Negara Republik Indonesia.
* Bersedia ditempatkan di seluruh wilayah Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia atau negara lain yang ditentukan pemerintah.
* Mempunyai kompetensi yang diperlukan.
* Usia minimal 18 tahun. Usia setinggi-tingginya 27 tahun bagi pelamar berpendidikan D3; 30 tahun bagi pelamar berpendidikan D4 dan S1; dan 35 tahun bagi pelamar berpendidikan S2 dan S3.

Postdoctoral Position in Ocean Modelling – Climate Change Downscaling- Application Deadline: 15 August, 2009

Appointment will be for a 12-month duration and may start October 1st, 2009 or later. Annual income will be 24,000 Euros.

We invite applications from talented and motivated candidates interested in pursuing their research in coastal oceanography and meteorology, with focus in downscaling global climate change scenarios in relation with regional environmental and ecosystems evolutions. The successful applicants will participate in a new project funded by the European Community.

The European FP7 MEECE (Marine Ecosystem Evolution in a Changing Environment) project will address global change, the result of natural and anthropogenically induced climate change impacts upon the structure and function of marine ecosystems via a number of abiotic and biotic drivers. The specific goals of MEECE are :

• To improve the knowledge base on marine ecosystems and their response to climate and anthropogenic driving forces ;
• To develop innovative predictive management tools and strategies to resolve the dynamic interactions of the global change driver, i.e. changes in ocean circulation, climate, ocean acidification, pollution, overfishing and alien invasive species on the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems.

To achieve these goals, MEECE will employ a combination of data synthesis, numerical simulations and targeted experimentation. An increase in the knowledge base and predictive capacities regarding the influence of the drivers is central to the successful fulfillment of the goals of the European Marine Stategy. The offered post-doctoral position is part of this MEECE project led by Dr Icarus Allen at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, United Kingdom, which will extend from late 2008 till late 2012. Within the “Ecosystem response to climate scale drivers” Work Package, the candidate will have to perform a dynamical downscaling of the regional climate in the ocean domain that includes the Benguela upwelling area. The common methodology in dynamical regional climate downscaling employs a continuous integration of a limited-area model. The study will particularly focus on the regional impact of climate change on the oceanic component of the system. Nonetheless, due to the common low resolution used in climate scenarios runs and the highly dependency of the coastal upwelling dynamics to synoptic-scale atmospheric forcings, we will implement the downscaling technique to both, the atmosphere and ocean components of the climate system.

We will start with the realization of forced atmospheric and oceanic simulations. Coupled air-sea downscaling experiments could be implemented as final operational step of the work in collaboration. In this study we will use the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to dynamically downscale the atmosphere. The ROMS ocean physical model will be used to simulate the hydrodynamics and thermal structure. The SAfE (South AFrican Experiment) configuration (1/4°) in which is embedded a refined zoom (1/12°) of the Benguela upwelling system will be run in scenarios (Penven et al. 2006, Rouault et al. 2009). The post-doctoral work will be intended to develop the best « downscaling » techniques to regionalize the climate change signal simulated by the IPCC AR4 climate models. Preliminary tests have been already performed and the following on approaches will be discussed with the successful candidate.

Here are some questions to be addressed :
• What are the consequences of the climate changes on the physical behaviour of the regional atmosphere ?
• What is the impact on the open-ocean and local upwelling system ?
• What is the sensitivity to climate change for the different components of the system and their sensitivity to the applied downscaling method ?

A recent PhD in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, physical oceanography or a related field is required. The applicant should have a strong background in geophysical fluid dynamics and numerical modelling.

PhD scholarship in Green Chemistry, Italy

Description : A Scholarship to undertake a PhD in Chemistry (funded by the Italian Ministero dell’Università) is available as Cotutelle between the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy) and the University of Sydney (Australia). A joint PhD degree will be awarded, based upon submission of an English-language thesis and laboratory work at both Universities. Applications from students of any nationality with a Honours, Masters or Laurea Specialistica degree in Chemistry and demonstrated research experience in synthetic chemistry are encouraged. The three year Scholarship (total of 47,734 €) commences on Jan 1st, 2010.

PhD Project Summary The topic relates to Green Chemistry, i.e. the implementation of new chemical processes with reduced environmental impact. The PhD candidate will identify and characterize suitable biomass feedstocks (USyd+UniVe), develop new physico-chemical technologies to separate biomass into its component sugars (USyd), and study new chemical processes to transform these into products of interest for the fine chemical industry (UniVe).

Teaching Assistantship in Environmental and Plant Biology, Ohio University, USA

A teaching assistantship is available in the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology, Ohio University, to study the genetic control of reproductive morphological diversity in Papaveraceae. The project investigates links between inflorescence architecture and flower symmetry in the morphologically diverse Papaveraceae. Poppies
and fumitories represent a new model lineage at the base of the eudicots. We have identified homologs of FLORICAULA, FRUITFULL, TERMINAL FLOWER1, and CYCLOIDEA genes in order to study their role in inflorescence determinacy, effloration sequence, and flower symmetry in a set of key species.

The project involves (i) cloning and phylogenetic characterization of additional genes from a broader sampling of species, (ii) a comparative morphological study of inflorescence and flower development, (iii) the characterization of gene expression patterns using RT-PCR and in situ hybridization, and (iv) phenotypic analyses of effects of modulated expression using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) and Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. As part of this
effort, VIGS will be adapted to fumitory species.

Candidates for this position should have a strong interest in plant development and evolution, and demonstrable experience in some of the methods mentioned. The ability to work independently and self- motivated is essential. The student will join a lab with vibrant research spanning from the organismal to the molecular level.
