Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer, Inc. Research Grant Program

Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer, Inc. Research Grant Program

 Application deadline: August 30, 2013

Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer, Inc. (WOKC) is a Dallas-based nonprofit organization founded in 1980 dedicated to raising awareness and funding pediatric cancer research on a national basis. WOKC’s mission is to work relentlessly for the day when all children are living cancer free.

One of the main goals of WOKC is to find cures through research. To meet this goal, WOKC provides grants to support meritorious research ranging from basic laboratory investigation to clinical management of pediatric cancers. For all awarded grants, collaboration with a pediatric cancer treatment center and an institution with basic and/or clinical research programs are encouraged.

 Research Grants

 Policies and Guidelines

Research Grants are offered to encourage the development of new information that contributes to the understanding, treatment, and cure of pediatric cancers. In addition, consideration will be given to those projects that provide insight into information that may contribute to the development of new therapies for pediatric cancers. All proposals must be hypothesis driven, and sufficient preliminary data must be provided to justify the WOKC support. Information derived from these studies should have high potential for sustainable future support from other funding agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Research Grant applications should focus on basic science research or clinical research. Those proposals that include methodologies requiring sampling of materials from human subjects will be considered under this mechanism only if the sampling method constitutes minimal patient risk and are approved by the clinical/research institutions internal review board. All other projects utilizing human subjects must submit a Clinical Research Letter of Intent.

Applications for Research Grants are being accepted with the following stipulations:

Funding amount from $50,000 up to $150,000, including no more than 8% indirect costs, may be requested.

Grants may be approved for up to a 1 year period of funding.

Because grants cover only one year of research, likelihood of future funding from other sources will be considered and should be explained by the applicant.

Applicants must be independent investigators, or clinical or research receiving direct oversight/mentorship by an independent investigator.

Applicants need not be U.S. Citizens or hold a U.S. permanent visa to apply for this award.

International applicants and institutions are required to submit additional information in accordance with U.S. anti-terror restrictions.

 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Application Deadline: August 30, 2013 at 5:00pm (Eastern Time)

Applications must be sent electronically with any signatures scanned to Evelyn Costolo at ecostolo@wokc.org. Hard copies will not be accepted.

Do not submit an incomplete application. An application will be considered incomplete if it fails to comply with instructions or if the material is insufficient to permit adequate review.

Revisions, insertions or appendices to applications will not be accepted after the receipt date unless agreed to by WOKC’s Grants Committee. Even if a part of an application is approved for late submission, there is no guarantee that the application will be reviewed. Only Human Subjects Certification, Use of Animals Certification, and Recombinant DNA Approval will be accepted apart from the body of the grant application if they are not available at time of submission.

Requests to submit supplemental data must be received before November 1st.

This annual program was established to fund research projects that will contribute to priority and emerging areas in the field of pediatric psychology, and that will allow investigators to collect pilot data to aid in securing additional major grant funding.

For the 2013 award cycle, the priority areas identified are:

Technology ( eHealth interventions and information and communication technologies)

 Health care cost-offset research

 Primary care-focused practice or interventions

Studies of novel measurement/assessment strategies (e.g., validation of new questionnaires focused on patient-reported outcomes)

Another novel or emerging research area in the field of pediatric psychology. Applicant must demonstrate or document why this area is novel or emerging.

SPP will award up to two grants in the amount of $20,000 each to cover one year of funding to those research proposals demonstrating the greatest merit and potential for success. Although priority will be given to young investigators (within seven years of PhD), investigators at any stage of career are encouraged to apply for this funding. For example, a mid-career researcher who is moving into a new emerging research area would be eligible to apply. Only sole principal investigator (PI) applications will be accepted.

 Application Deadline: Oct. 1

 Eligibility

Proposals will be evaluated based on:

 Scientific merit and impact

Degree of fit with at least one of the priority research areas listed above

The applicant's demonstrated competence and capability to execute the proposed work

 How to Apply

 Requirements for Application

The applicant must hold a doctoral degree and have a current faculty appointment at an accredited institution at the level of instructor, assistant professor, etc. (or equivalent)

The applicant must be a member of SPP

A letter of intent (LOI) must be submitted and the PI must subsequently be invited to submit an application based on approval of the LOI.

 Letter of Intent

Submissions of LOI's should be no longer than 1 ½ pages and must be submitted electronically to the committee chair as a single .pdf, .doc or .docx file by July 1, 2013 (single-spaced, 11- or 12 -point font, 1-inch margins).

 Include the following sections:

 Description of Project.

Call for Nominations: Gates Vaccine Innovation Award

Hundreds of thousands of lives each year could be saved by improved access to vaccines. Vaccines are cost-effective, safe, and proven to protect children from disease.

Continued innovation is essential to overcoming persistent challenges in reaching more children with vaccines.

The Gates Vaccine Innovation Award will celebrate revolutionary ways children in the poorest parts of the world are immunized. The winning innovation will be recognized with a US $250,000 prize.

The Gates Vaccine Innovation Award is open to individuals from any discipline. Candidates from academic institutions, governments, health care facilities, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies may be nominated.

 Criteria

We recognize that innovation in the delivery of vaccines can take many shapes. We are looking for ideas big or small that have resulted in tangible improvements in immunization coverage in developing country communities.

Nominees will be assessed on three broad criteria:

Developing country impact – The nominee should have contributed to the prevention, control, or elimination of vaccine-preventable disease through significant improvements in immunization quality and coverage among mothers and children in developing countries.

Innovation and creativity – The nominee should have applied imaginative and pioneering approaches to overcome difficult challenges to immunizing children and achieving impact. Innovation is not the same as invention. Even simple ideas applied in creative ways to overcome real-world challenges can be considered innovative.

Scale – The nominee’s innovation should be at scale or suitable to be implemented at scale within the nominee’s country and around the world.

If you are unable to complete the online nomination form, please send an email to vaccine-innovation-award@gatesfoundation.org to request a Word version of the nomination form.

Joseph E. and Nancy O. Whitley Award

Manuscript Submission Deadline is October 7, 2013

A full manuscript must be submitted to be eligible for the award. An abstract submission is encouraged. Abstracts must be received by the abstract deadline of October 2, 2013, 12:00 pm (noon) Central Time. A certificate and a $1,000 honorarium in honor of Joseph E. Whitley, MD, and his wife, Nancy O. Whitley, MD, are awarded annually to the person who submits the best paper on education in radiology. The winner will be required to present his or her paper at the AUR Annual Meeting.

This award recognizes the contributions of the Whitley's to the field of education in radiology. Dr. Joseph E. Whitley served as chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and received the AUR Gold Medal in1989. His contributions to teaching methods in radiology were seminal and helped establish the field. Dr. Nancy O. Whitley continued his work and made many contributions of her own; she received the AUR Gold Medal in 1994. Whitley Award competition has been a vital factor in helping the AUR establish itself as the premier forum for educational research and innovation in radiology. The growth in the number and quality of the Whitley Award submissions continues to enhance the mission of the AUR.

The AUR Education Committee urges all interested persons to consider submission for the 2014 award. Only AUR members are eligible for this award. To be eligible, the paper must deal predominantly with education in radiology and should contain unique material. The education described may be at any level, including undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate. Only manuscripts accepted for publication will be considered for publication in Academic Radiology and should therefore follow the format prescribed in the journal's Guidelines for Authors, including the copyright transfer.

Manuscripts submitted for the Whitley Award Competition:

 ■ Must be a first-time submission.

 ■ Cannot be under consideration for an award by another organization (other than AUR and its Alliances or APDR)

 ■ Cannot already be published

 ■ Cannot be under consideration for publication by a journal other than Academic Radiology

 ■ Cannot be presented at a national meeting before the 2014 AUR Annual Meeting

The criteria for evaluation will include the originality of the concept, clarity of the manuscript, experimental design, validity of outcome, and significance.

In order to improve manuscript quality, a review process has been added. Authors will now have the opportunity to receive suggested revisions to their manuscripts. Submissions of the manuscript for the Whitley Award should be made through the ACADEMIC RADIOLOGY online, electronic submission system.

When submitting a manuscript to Elsevier Editorial System, authors need to provide an electronic version of their manuscript. For this purpose original source files, not PDF files, are required and should be submitted as word documents with .tif figures (300 DPI for half-tones and 800-1200 DPI for line-art). The purpose of the award is to acknowledge research contributions that further the improvement of diagnosis and therapeutics in the practice and science of dermatology.

Two outstanding young investigators will be selected as recipients of the award, which is presented during the AAD's Annual Meeting.

Each winner will receive an engraved plaque and a $6,000 prize that is shared equally between the investigator and the dermatology department supporting the research efforts.

The deadline for nominations is October 15, 2013.

 The selection process

The Awards Selection Panel includes representatives from the Council on Science and Research; the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology; the Association of Professors of Dermatology; the Society for Investigative Dermatology; an AAD member-at-large; and a resident in dermatology or past winner.

The four criteria for judging nominees are:

 ■ Originality of research concept.

 ■ Soundness of research design.

 ■ Quality/clarity of research report.

 ■ Perceived value of the research to dermatology.

Each criterion will be evaluated on a numerical, zero to five basis, with five being superior and 0 being well below average.

The total of the numerical rankings combined with the letters of recommendation will be used by the six physicians on the Awards Selection Panel to determine the winner.

If external collaborators or sources of external funding represent any perceived or actual conflict of interest with the AAD and its mission, the AAD reserves the right to exclude the applicant from consideration.

For further information, please call (847) 240-1724 or email Allen McMillen at amcmillen@aad.org.

National Board of Medical Examiners Edward J. Stemmler, MD, Medical Education Research Fund (“The Stemmler Fund”) 2013-2014 Call for Letters of Intent

The goal of the Stemmler Fund’s 2013-2014 Call for Letters of Intent (CFLOI) is to provide support, through a program of annual grants, for research or development of innovative assessment approaches which will enhance the evaluation of those preparing to, or continuing to, practice medicine. Expected outcomes include advances in the theory, knowledge, or practice of assessment at any point along the continuum of medical education, from undergraduate and graduate education and training, through practice.

Pilot and more comprehensive projects are both of interest. Collaborative investigations within or among institutions are not only eligible but encouraged, particularly as they strengthen the likelihood of the project’s contribution and success.

 Eligibility

The eligible applicants for Stemmler Fund grant awards are the medical schools accredited by the LCME or the AOA. Additional eligibility requirements include:

-- The number of Letters of Intent submitted by any eligible school is not limited. However, an individual may not be principal investigator on more than one Letter of Intent. The designated principal investigator must represent the primary applicant institution and must be responsible for project oversight and reporting. (The applicant institution’s rules apply regarding eligibility of their faculty, staff, or associates to serve as investigators.)

-- A maximum of two applications representing a revised Letter of Intent previously submitted to the Fund program will be accepted by the NBME. That is, applications addressing the same substantive study topic by the same investigators may be submitted for Fund consideration no more than a total of three times.

-- The primary investigators of prior Fund grants are eligible to reapply and compete (with new applicants) for one additional award through the Stemmler Fund Call for Letters of Intent for the same line of study. Current award recipients are eligible to compete again only if any current NBME support is expected to terminate satisfactorily by the beginning of the 2013-2014 project period (usually around July 1, 2014).

 Budget Information

In the 2013-2014 cycle, applicants may request up to $150,000 of NBME funding support for a project period of up to two years. While a detailed budget should not be submitted as part of the Letter of Intent, applicants are required to include estimates of funding requested and project length on the application cover sheet submitted as part of the Letter of Intent process, and should be prepared to provide a detailed budget and descriptive narrative if they are invited to submit a full proposal.

Although only a budget estimate should be included in Letters of Intent, applicants who wish to be prepared to submit an Invited Proposal should consider the following regarding funds requested from NBME:

-- Both pilot and more comprehensive or large-scale studies which meet the Stemmler Fund’s goals are eligible; the amount of funds requested should reflect the scale of the proposed project.

-- A request for support, to purchase or lease equipment or for travel, is acceptable if the request has a unique
association with the proposed project, is required to meet project aims, and represents a limited portion of the total request.

-- The institutional administrative costs requested for each year of the proposed project is limited to 10% of the total direct costs requested for each year. As an example, $68,180 (direct) + $6,818 (admin) = an annual NBME request of $74,998.

 Selection Process

 1. All submitted Letters of Intent will be reviewed by NBME staff to ensure eligibility and completeness.

 2. Committee members will then evaluate Letters of Intent using the following criteria:

-- The extent to which the proposed research is innovative or will advance assessment in medical education or practice

-- The extent to which the proposed research addresses an important problem or issue in medical education or practice

-- The extent to which the proposed research is likely to be successful given the described design and methodology

 3. The Stemmler Fund Steering Committee will then review all Letters of Intent and select a subset of Letters of Intent (e.g., 10-15) to be invited to submit full proposals.

 4. All Invited Proposals will be reviewed by NBME staff to ensure completeness.

 5. Peer reviewers with expertise in measurement, research design and methodology will then evaluate Invited Proposals using the following criteria:

-- The relevance and significance of the proposal to the purpose and goals of the Stemmler Fund program

-- The adequacy and completeness of the research design or methodology

-- The qualifications of the principal investigator and primary project staff

 6. The Stemmler Fund Steering Committee will then review all proposals and peer reviews, giving careful consideration to the adequacy of the budget, timetable, and other key project resources in each proposal, and select awards.

The process for consideration of new proposals and competing renewals will be identical. The number of grants awarded will depend on the nature, quality, and level of the requests received in the 2012-2013 funding cycle. The NBME will provide feedback detailing the comments provided by reviewers of applications not selected for funding.

 2013-2014 Application and Award Cycle

July 1, 2013 Deadline for receipt of Letters of Intent

 November 2013 Invited Proposals Notified

Peer Review Feedback Provided to Letter of Intent Applicants

January 2014 Deadline for receipt of Invited Proposals

 April 2014 Awards Announced

July 1, 2014 2012-2013 cycle project start date

Urology Care Foundation/Astellas Rising Stars in Urology Research Awards

In 2005 the Urology Care Foundation initiated a new grant program to encourage young urology faculty to enter and remain in research careers, the "Rising Star in Urology Award." Applicants are Board-certified or -eligible urologists who have successfully competed for a new externally-funded, peer-reviewed career development award (i.e., K07/K08/K23 awards from NIH, or career development type grants from the Department of Defense, American Cancer Society or others). This program provides up to five years of supplemental salary support to career development awardees to ensure that their research salary compensation is competitive with other academic urology faculty. This supplementation allows the urologist to not only remain a contributor to their institution as a surgical specialist, but also have time to investigate potential treatments and cures to make a difference in the lives of urologists and the patients they serve.

Urology Care Foundation/Ferring Pharmaceuticals Urology Research Success Award in Prostate Cancer Research

The application package must be SUBMITTED by email no later than 11:59 p.m. LOCAL time on Monday, July 8, 2013.

The preponderance of urologic research is funded through federal and state governments and the philanthropy of private foundations and non-profit organizations. The competition for these limited funds is extremely intense. Many projects are funded through a series of grants, thus young scientists and senior researchers may experience gaps in funding while awaiting peer review and/or approval for a new grant to support the next phase of research.

Part of the mission of the Urology Care Foundation is to expand and support research in urologic diseases. Thanks to the generosity of Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the Urology Care Foundation is proud to offer the Urology Care Foundation/Ferring Pharmaceuticals Urology Research Success Award in Prostate Cancer Research. The award will provide up to $10,000 designed to assist a urology researcher in continuing vital urology research efforts while awaiting new funding. Research supported by this award ultimately will contribute to helping those who suffer from the effects of prostate cancer.

Please submit all application docurments to grants@urologycarefoundation.org.

Barth Syndrome Foundation 2013 Request for Research Proposals

Barth Syndrome Foundation 2013 Request for Research Proposals

The Barth Syndrome Foundation, Inc. (BSF) and its international affiliates are pleased to announce the availability of funding for basic science and clinical research on the natural history, biochemical basis, and treatment of Barth syndrome. Starting in 2013, there will be two types of grant awards: IDEA grants for 1-2 years and DEVELOPMENT grants for 2-3 years with budgetary maximums of US $50,000 or $100,000, respectively over the full period. BSF's Research Grant Program allows young, non-tenured investigators to include in their submitted budget up to 75% of the direct costs amount as PI salary (10% for established investigators). In addition, for those clinical applications where volunteers must travel to a clinical research site, these travel expenses will be handled separately and will not be included in the application budget limitation. We encourage all investigators at every professional level to submit their best ideas for advancing the state of knowledge about Barth syndrome so that progress can be made in finding a specific treatment or a cure for this unusual mitochondrial disease. There are no geographical limitations to this funding.

Barth syndrome (BTHS) is a serious X-linked genetic condition associated with cardiomyopathy, neutropenia, skeletal muscle weakness, exercise intolerance, growth delay, and diverse biochemical abnormalities (including defects in mitochondrial metabolism and phospholipid biosynthesis). Because many clinical and biochemical abnormalities of Barth syndrome remain poorly understood, we are seeking proposals for both basic science and clinical research that may shed light on any aspect of the syndrome, with the ultimate objective of developing a specific treatment or a cure.

 Types of Proposals Sought

We are interested in providing financial assistance to investigators interested in exploring the field of BTHS science and/or clinical research. We anticipate that these funds might be useful as “seed grants” for the testing of initial hypotheses and the collection of preliminary data that can lead to successful long-term funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other major granting institutions around the world. In addition to those having prior research experience with BTHS, we encourage young investigators and experienced investigators that are new to the field of BTHS to submit proposals for funding.

 Process

We have a competitive grant process. Applications should be of 10–15 pages in length and must follow the instructions listed on the BSF website. In general terms, detailed information about the specific aims, significance, research design and methods, personnel, facilities, and budget will be required. A one-page, “Letter of Intent” is required for DEVELOPMENT grant applicants with a due date of September 1, 2013. The “Letter of Intent” is optional for IDEA grant applicants. We strongly encourage the submission of letters of intent before the due date to allow ample time for review and feedback.

Completed applications (and/or “Letters of Intent”) will be forwarded to the BSF Scientific and Medical Advisory Board (as well as to expert outside reviewers) for confidential evaluation. Response to the “Letter of Intent” will be communicated within two weeks of receipt. Based on the recommendations of the BSF Scientific and Medical Advisory Board, the BSF Board of Directors will make the final funding decisions about the grant applications. Please review our “Grants Awarded” webpage for a listing of grants that BSF and its affiliates have awarded to date.

 Funding

We anticipate awarding several IDEA and DEVELOPMENT grants each year. Funds will be available soon after the successful grant applicants have been notified in early March, 2014.

 Deadline

The deadline for submission of the completed research grant application is October 31, 2013, and grants will be awarded in early March, 2014. The deadline for the one-page "Letter of Intent," if applicable, is September 1, 2013.

 Contact Information

 Matthew J.

Call for Appplications: Sloan Foundation Funded Science Festival Program

The Science Festival Alliance (SFA) is currently seeking applications from new science festival initiatives in US communities with a relatively small resource base interested in receiving matching funding, mentoring, and travel support. The support is available thanks to the generous support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Application deadline: Friday, June 21, 2013

 Award recipients will receive:

 • One time challenge grant intended to jump-start a new or significantly expanded, and annually recurring, festival initiative. Challenge grants will match up to $10,000 in funds raised specifically for a festival initiative.

 • Mentoring support from established science festival initiatives.

 • Travel support that will provide reimbursement for: 1) a visit to a science festival in action, and 2) attendance at the International Public Science Events Conference, tentatively scheduled for February, 2014.

By December 1, 2014 award recipients will be expected to:

 • Launch a recurring (preferably annual) festival initiative in the US with a primary focus on science, technology, engineering, and/or math. The festival initiative must be either new or a substantial expansion of a smaller existing annual event. The initiative may be led by a single organization, but it must be collaborative in nature, with mechanisms in place for programming involvement by other individuals and groups as appropriate. The festival must serve a region or community with a relatively small resource (described further below).

 • Hold a first set of public events. The festival initiative should seek to serve a meaningful critical mass of attendees as appropriate to the region served and overall budget for the initiative. Attendance goals for this first event may shift in the course of festival planning, but must not be lower than 2,000.

 • Travel to an existing science festival in session for observation, and attend a professional meeting related to science festivals.

 • Participate in the development of “how-to” resources to assist future new science festival initiatives.

 • Appropriately recognize challenge grant funding support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

 • Complete on-time reports to the Science Festival Alliance on activity related to this program.

 • Participate in the Science Festival Alliance network.

What is meant by a community with a “relatively small resource base:”

 • A region with relatively low funding resources, such that a first year budget for a festival would not be expected to exceed $60,000; and/or,

 • A region with relatively low levels of STEM research activity and few formal and informal education institutions; and/or,

 • A region with a relatively small population base.

 Application process:

 • Applications in the form of a single PDF document must be emailed to connect@sciencefestivals.org by close of business, Friday, June 21.

 • If you have questions about this specific application process, or science festivals generally, you are encouraged to contact the Science Festival Alliance at any point in the process.

 • Applications will be reviewed by a committee assembled by the Science Festival Alliance. This committee will be asked to keep application details confidential.

 • The most promising candidates will be contacted for phone interviews in June or July of 2013, and may be asked to supply additional written material prior to the determination of up to 12 award recipients.

 • All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by no later than August 30, 2013.
