2010-11 Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering

2010-11 Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering

The 2010-11 Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program application is now available.

The deadline for applications is January 25, 2010.

The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program sends emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their own careers within the field. In the first four years of the Whitaker Program, over 60 grants have been awarded to Fellows and Scholars who conducted projects in 16 countries worldwide.

For the 2010-11 competition, the Whitaker Program intends to fund approximately 50 high-quality projects.

Program Background
Today, biomedical engineering (BME) is a global discipline. Biomedical engineers know that, as work in the field becomes more refined, the best place to study or conduct research is not always in the U.S. Although there are currently few opportunities to go abroad to leverage international expertise, the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program makes available just such an opportunity.

Biomedical engineers can use the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program to go overseas to help further their careers, and the field of BME. Potential overseas activities could include:

Conducting research at an academic institution
Interning at a policy institute
Establishing ties between home and host institutions
Pursuing post-doctoral research

The Program consists of two branches: Whitaker Fellows and Whitaker Scholars

Whitaker Fellows are biomedical engineers (or bioengineers, which is considered synonymous) ranging from graduating seniors to those conducting doctoral studies. Whitaker Scholars are biomedical engineers who have/will have a PhD by the beginning date of their awards. Applicants are eligible ONLY for one or the other (depending on their academic level).

Fellows
Fellows should have a BS or MS degree in biomedical engineering. Because some institutions do not offer biomedical engineering or its equivalent as a degree program, exceptions may be made based on a demonstrated commitment to the field of BME through significant coursework, research, laboratory or work experience.

If not currently enrolled, the applicant’s latest degree may not have been obtained more than three years prior to the start of the grant.

The Whitaker International Fellow award will be approximately one academic year in length, and should be used to conduct work commensurate with the grantee’s experience in BME.

Scholars
Scholars should have a degree in biomedical engineering and a doctorate (which may not have been obtained more than three years prior to the start of the grant) OR will receive the PhD prior the start of the grant.

Scholar awards can be for as little as one academic semester or as long as two years, but are typically one academic year in length. The Whitaker International Scholar award will be used to conduct postdoctoral work.

Host Country

Grantees will come from diverse geographic areas of the United States and they will conduct their Whitaker Fellow or Scholar activity in diverse regions of the world. Candidates may apply to study or do research in any country outside of the U.S., except Canada, because it is contiguous with the United States, and the international experience is minimized.

Projects/Activities
A Whitaker International Fellow or Scholar experience will ideally advance an emerging biomedical engineering career, while also advancing the goal of increased international collaboration in BME.

Activities could include (but are not limited to):

Graduating seniors: Pursuing an academic year of study or research that leads to graduate study in BME, with the possible ability to transfer credit toward an advanced degree.
Graduate students: Conducting study or research at an overseas institution with established ties to your home institution in order to build on an existing collaboration or initiating a new relationship between your home institution and an overseas institution through collaboration in the lab or in the classroom.
At all pre-doctoral levels: Performing in-depth work in industry or policy-making (related to BME) through an internship assignment.
During/After the PhD: Engaging in a culminating experience by conducting research to foster career opportunities and/or to link the US and international BME communities.
Post-Doctoral: Pursuing pre-professional post-doctoral work at a leading overseas institution.
These are only some possibilities of relevant BME-related activities one could pursue. Applicants are free to design their own BME-relevant activity. Visit our Fellows and Scholars Directory to see what projects previous award recipients undertook.

Number of Grants
The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program can support between 50 and 60 grants per year.

However, only those applications and projects which the Whitaker Program Review Committee deems of high quality will be funded. For the 2009-10 application cycle, 26 out of 56 applications were selected by the Review Committee for funding.

Host Institution Affiliation

Any international institution that offers an outstanding professional experience in biomedical engineering may serve as a host institution. It is the applicant’s responsibility to select the host institution.

Fellow candidates are strongly recommended to include in their applications a substantive letter of support (one that addresses the specific proposed project) from a host institution or advisor.

Scholar candidates are required to include with their applications a host institution letter of support attesting to the depth and nature of the affiliation.

Grant length and start dates
A Fellow’s grant length is expected to be approximately one academic year (as defined by the academic calendar of the host country, but typically 9-12 months).

A Scholar’s grant will typically be one academic year in length, but can be as short as one academic semester, and as long as two academic years (for use in post-doctoral research fellowships). Applications should justify the length of time, based on how it would benefit the applicant, the activity, and the field of BME.

Awards typically begin between July 1st and October 1st, but may begin as late as March 31st.

Award Type Requirements
All Whitaker Awards Degree / Enrollment: No more than 3 years from most recent degree, or currently enrolled
Citizenship: Have U.S. citizenship, OR are a permanent legal resident of the U.S.
Language: Have language ability to carry out the proposed project in the host country at the time of departure.
Field / Specialty: In biomedical engineering or bioengineering
NOTE: If you are at an institution that does not offer a formalized BME program, an applicant should have a demonstrated commitment to the field of BME. Significant coursework, research, laboratory/work experience are some of the ways to demonstrate such commitment.

Fellowship Pre-Doctoral
Graduating senior
Recent recipient of a BS
In an MS program, or recently completed one
In a PhD program
Currently employed, with most recent degree no higher than an MS

Scholarship Post-Doctoral
Will finish PhD before taking a Whitaker grant
Completed PhD

Award Benefits
The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program offers a stipend commensurate with the recipient’s experience and expected expenses in the host country.

Fellows: The term of the award will be for a maximum of one academic year (as defined by the academic calendar of the host country).

Scholars: The term of the award will be as little as one academic semester, or up to two academic years in length (for post-doctoral research fellowships). Scholar awards generally should require a full academic year, but any length of time proposed should be appropriately justified at the time of application.

Award Benefits Include:
Round trip international airfare
A monthly living stipend
Health&Accident insurance
Fellows Only: Tuition allowance up to a maximum amount (to be determined by program administrators, typically no greater than $25,000)
Grantee Meetings
To foster the sharing of information and the development of a community of international fellows and scholars, interaction among recipients is encouraged during their grant tenure, and funding may be made available for such gatherings. Former fellows and scholars may also be invited to periodic conferences in the United States.

Contact Us
If you have comments or questions about the grant, the application, becoming a campus contact, or anything else, you can contact us by phone or email:

Phone: +1 212.984.5442
Email: whitaker@iie.org

The Whitaker International Fellows and Science Program is administered by the U.S. Student Programs division at Institute of International Education, by:

Alyssa Yeng
Program Manager
Science & Technology Programs
+1 212.984.5542

and

Vijay Renganathan
Senior Program Manager
Science & Technology Programs
+1 212.984.5442

Betty Ford Center Summer Institute for Medical Students

The Summer Institute for Medical Students is a unique learning experience for medical students to gain understanding and insight into addictive disease and the recovery process.

Successful applicants to this program have the opportunity to spend five days experiencing what it is like to be a patient or a family member at the Betty Ford Center. Placements are available in the following programs:

Inpatient Treatment Those selected to participate in Inpatient Treatment are assigned to a residence hall where they join patients in lectures, group therapy sessions, physical activity therapy, specialized groups, peer groups and meals.
Residential Day Treatment Students who attend Residential Day Treatment participate in a program designed to address the needs of professionals who work in safety-sensitive jobs (pilots, physicians, nurses, attorneys) or who need extended treatment in a structured setting. Again, the students follow the patients through their day participating in most aspects of their care.

Family Program Those selected to participate in the Family Program spend five days with family members of chemically dependent people. The focus of this program is to help family members see how they have been impacted by addiction and to assist them in finding ways to improve their lives. Family Treatment activities include lectures, workshops, and group therapy.

New this year, a chance for 1-2 medical students to work with us for the entire summer, doing follow-up research. These students will attend the 1 week SIMS program (with lodging and on-campus meals paid for), and spend the rest of the summer working gathering data while living at their own homes. You are not required to participate as a researcher in order to be accepted in the SIMS Program.

Participants in all programs attend lectures addressing the medical needs of addicted patients and the theory and philosophy of treatment at the Betty Ford Center. They also attend a Treatment Planning Update (TPU) meeting to observe the multidisciplinary care process at the Center. Finally, as a means for integrating the knowledge gained from this experience, students are required to develop a PowerPoint presentation.

Dates for the Summer Institute for Medical Students

2010

May 17 - May 21
May 31 - June 4
June 14 - June 18
June 28 - July 2
July 12 - July 16
July 26 - July 30
August 9 - August 13
All programs begin on Monday at 7:00 am and end at 4:30 pm on Friday.
Eligibility
Applicants who do not meet all eligibility requirements will not be considered.

Eligible student candidates for the fellowship must:
Be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate students during the 2010-2011 academic year at an accredited U.S. Institution,
Be involved in a research project,
Have an ASM member at their home institutions willing to serve as a mentor, and
Not receive financial support for research (i.e., Council for Undergraduate Research, Minority Access to Research Careers, Sigma Xi) during the fellowship.

Eligible faculty mentors must:
Have an appointment at the same institution as the student applicant
Be ASM members, and
Have an ongoing research project.

Funding
Funding for the ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship program is provided by the American Society for Microbiology.

The Fellowship provides:
Up to $4000 for student stipend
Two-year ASM student membership, and
Up to $1000 in travel support for students to present the results of the research project at the 2011 ASM General Meeting. Travel funds are contingent upon acceptance of an abstract for the General Meeting.

Criteria for Selection
Student applicants should be able to demonstrate:
Academic achievement,
Relevant career objectives,
Potential contribution to overall project outcome,
Personal motivation to participate in the program, and
Achievement in previous research experiences.

Faculty mentor applicants should be able to demonstrate:
Commitment to undergraduate education and research,
Quality, significance, and potential impact of the research project,
Appropriateness of the project for undergraduate student research,
Availability of appropriate facilities to support the proposed research project, and
Endorsement of the project by Department Chair or Dean.

*Note to Faculty Mentors
The number of qualified applicants for the URF Program has increased steadily since the Fellowship was established in 1993. Also, to ensure that URF stipends are competitive with the national stipend level, stipend level has been increased to $4,000. However, the amount of monies available from the ASM Fellowship Fund has decreased recently due to recent market trends. As a result, ASM solicits institutional support (e.g. for student stipend) in order to maintain the current level of funding. Please indicate on your application if your institution will be willing to provide full support for the student stipend. If your application is funded, ASM will provide one-year student membership and funding for the student to attend the ASM General Meeting and present research results the following year.

Preference is given to projects that:

Demonstrate the mentor's and the institution's financial commitment to the project, and
Have a significant impact on the faculty mentor's ongoing research effort.

Review of Proposals
To provide equal opportunity for students from all types of undergraduate institutions, proposals are grouped for review according to the Carnegie Classification of the applicant's institution. Awards are apportioned to each group based on the number of applicants received.

Deadline
February 1st

Application
The program requires a joint application from both the student and a faculty mentor. The faculty mentor must be an ASM member and willing to serve as the applicant's mentor for the duration of the research experience. It is student's responsibility to submit a completed application by February 1, 2010.

For more information, contact:
ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program
Education Board
American Society for Microbiology
1752 N Street, NW
Washington, DC 20036
fellowships-careerinformation@asmusa.org

RFA for Thalassemia Gene Research

RFA for Thalassemia Gene Research

The purpose of this initiative is to speed the application of recent translational advances in gene therapy to clinical trials. The Foundation recognizes that there are many key areas worthy of support in the search for a cure for thalassemia with cell therapy and gene therapy. While several funding mechanisms are available for a range of studies on vector development, proof of concept studies in animal models, and transplantation, there remains a funding gap for launching human trials. Both phase I (safety) and phase II (efficacy) trials are eligible for support. Funding and candidate eligibility: Total funding of up to $75,000 per year will be available (including indirect costs of 8%). With satisfactory evidence of progress the grant may be renewed for a second year. The research may not be conducted at a for-profit laboratory. Because the purpose of the support is to facilitate launch of clinical trials, eligible studies proposed for this RFA must be accompanied by a realistic timeline of progress to human trials. The Foundation recognizes that this timeline can be long. Applicants should state explicitly the status of their proposed trials, for example whether the trial has been approved by the recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC), or Food and Drug Administration (or equivalent processes at non-US sites), or whether review meetings at regulatory agencies have been scheduled. The completed application is due February 1, 2010.

Promoting Influenza Prevention: Pharmacists As Immunization Advocates--A Demonstration Grant Program

Promoting Influenza Prevention: Pharmacists As Immunization Advocates--A Demonstration Grant Program

Supported by CSL Biotherapies
Application Deadline: April 16, 2010

Each year in the United States, an estimated 20 percent of the population gets influenza. While most people recover without complications, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 people die. Influenza vaccination is the most effective tool to prevent those deaths. It is estimated that only 42 percent of health care personnel in the United States receive a yearly influenza vaccination, even though healthcare worker immunization has been identified as a critical strategy in protecting patients from exposure.

Description
The ASHP Foundation is offering support for demonstration projects that focus on the pharmacist’s role in promoting vaccination against seasonal influenza. These demonstration projects should address implementation of programs that advance seasonal influenza immunization in healthcare workers during the 2010/2011 influenza season and should incorporate resources from ASHP’s Stop the Flu – It Starts with You resource center.

Eligibility Criteria
• The proposed research must involve demonstration projects focused on the pharmacist’s role in promoting vaccination against seasonal influenza. If the principal investigator does not have a strong research track record, inclusion of a senior investigator as a member of the research team is strongly advised. The principal investigator must be a licensed pharmacist and multidisciplinary research teams are strongly encouraged. If a senior investigator participates on the research team as a mentor/advisor, in the application process and grant progress reports evidence must be included regarding the support and involvement of the senior investigator. The senior investigator must have a strong research track record. The senior investigator does not have to be a pharmacist. Consideration should be given to allocating a portion of the budget to support biostatistics consultation.
• The proposed research must be submitted to an institutional review board (IRB) for approval. Evidence of IRB approval must be provided to the ASHP Foundation upon acceptance of the grant award. Grant funds will not be disbursed until evidence of IRB approval has been received.
• Individuals who currently serve as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on an existing ASHP Foundation-supported research grant, with the exception of new investigator grants, are not eligible for funding through this grant program. Individuals who served as principal investigators on previous ASHP Foundation grants are eligible to apply if all work, including publication of study findings, on the previously funded research is complete. If a tie score occurs during the grant review process, the grant will be awarded to the applicant(s) who has/have not received a grant from the ASHP Foundation previously.
• The ASHP Foundation only makes grants to tax-exempt institutions or agencies in the United States of America.
• The research must comply with the NIH Policy and Guidelines on the Inclusion of Women and Minorities as Subjects in Clinical Research that was amended in October, 2001.
• The research must comply with the NIH Policy and Guidelines On the Inclusion of Children As Participants in Research Involving Human Subjects.
• The study timeline should not exceed 18 months from project initiation.

Funding Information
Two $25,000 grants will be awarded. Grants will be awarded to pharmacist investigators to provide funding for specific practice-based research related to the pharmacist’s role in promoting vaccination against seasonal influenza and are not intended for long-term support of research programs. Facilities and administrative cost rates that do not exceed 8% of the total requested budget are allowed.

Application Process
Pharmacists interested in applying for funding should refer to the request for proposals and application instructions below for full eligibility requirements and application procedures.

Selection Criteria
Grant applications will be judged by a selection panel using the following criteria:

• Rationale-10 points
• Significance-10 points
• Objectives-20 points
• Study Methods-40 points
• Scope and Timeline-5 points
• Personnel and Facilities-15 points

Deadline
April 16, 2010

2010 Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation/American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) New Investigator Awards in Alzheimer's Disease

The major goal of this program is to support important research in areas in which more scientific investigation is needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. The program will also serve to encourage junior investigators in the United States and Israel to pursue research and academic careers in the neurosciences, and Alzheimer's disease in particular.

Projects in basic and translational research related to Alzheimer's disease (AD) that are clinically relevant, will be considered. Examples of promising areas of research include, but are not limited to:

Basic mechanisms of aging in the central nervous system
Genetics of AD
Neuroimaging and precursors of AD
Cellular and Molecular pathways of AD
Biological Markers of AD
Exercise and dietary factors
Neurogenesis and AD
Impact of environmental agents in CNS aging and early AD
Inflammation
Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular factors
Drug discovery
Healthy brain aging*

*For one of the awards, priority may be given to an investigator with a research interest related to healthy brain aging. Areas of research could for example include nutrition, exercise, and cardiovascular risk factors, as they relate to the brain and the aging process.

It is anticipated that 5 grants of up to $75,000 each will be awarded in 2010. Applicants may propose to use the award over the course of one or two years as justified by the proposed research. Funds may not be requested for overhead or indirect costs. Funding will begin July 1, 2010.

Eligibility

The applicant must be an independent investigator with assigned independent space and must have received a junior faculty appointment (instructor, assistant professor or equivalent) by July 1, 2006 or later. The proposed research must be conducted at any type of not-for-profit setting in the United States or Israel.

The Gilbert/AFAR Research Grant Program does not provide support for:

Postdoctoral fellows in the laboratory of a senior investigator
Investigators who have already received major extramural funding for research on Alzheimer's disease and/or aging (such as an R01 grant)
Senior faculty, i.e. at the rank of Associate Professor level or higher
NIH Intramural program employees
Applicants cannot apply for the 2010 AFAR Research Grant Program or Glenn/AFAR BIG Program. Applications for this program will be considered for the AFAR Research Grant if deemed competitive.

If you are using animals in your research, please review Principles of Animal Use for Gerontological Research.

Application Guidelines

Five criteria are used to determine the merit of an application:

Qualifications of the applicant;
Quality of the proposed research;
Relevance of the proposal to how mechanisms of aging may lead to AD;
Excellence of the research environment;
Likelihood that the project will advance the applicant's career in basic research on the mechanisms of aging and AD

For one of the awards, priority may be given to an investigator with a research interest related to healthy brain aging provided the application is deemed to meet the highest standards set by AFAR's Research Committee.

Application Procedures

All candidates must submit applications endorsed by their institution. The deadline for receipt of applications and supporting materials from candidates based in the U.S. is December 15, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
