So, I decided to save all of those boxes for a couple of weeks. I stacked them in the laundry room, and as crazy as this may sound, there is a reason to my madness.

I have two little boys who love to build with everything, so I thought this would be a good, fun way to let them be creative in school time.

So yesterday, everyone got their chance to build whatever they wanted. We had all kinds of creations, from robot suits to battle ships. It really is amazing to see what they can come up with with something as simple as a few boxes!!

Here are some pictures of the fun, and it went on for a while, until the boxes started to break down. You will notice that some of the children have their PJ's on, sometimes we stay in the for a while, (I know, shame shame).
I know we go through tons of eggs at our house. So, what do you do with all of those egg cartons??

We have started using some of our empty egg cartons as seed starter pots. Fill them with a little soil and plant your seed. I use an empty Agave bottle to water them, since it is easy to control how fast and how much water comes out.

Here is a picture of my lettuce seeds that I planted about four days ago.

So, there you have it!! Yet another way to reuse and recycle, while attempting to become a little more self sufficient.

Tons of things, but I chose to make flower pots for my brusselsprouts. I saw this great idea over at Bonzai Aphrodite, she has tons of great Green tips.

I took my stack of newspaper from last week and got busy. I had 26 burussel sprout, sprouts that needed to be transferred to larger containers, but are not yet ready for the heat of the south, so I made us some planters. They were actually pretty easy, although I did have to use a piece of tape on the bottom of my pots.

To water them I am using an empty Agave container, and it seems to be working well. They look a little sad in the picture, but I had just transferred them. They have since perked up and are doing well!!

Brandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05886640332160495966noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040869366808762713.post-48434807063827671592011-08-20T13:21:00.000-07:002011-08-20T13:21:26.272-07:00How Green Are You??So, I have been reading tons of really good blogs and books lately about being "green", more healthy, and becoming more self sufficient. All in all, I like the idea of being able to produce my own food, and make some of the things that our family needs, such as clothes and things of that nature.

I know that many people live in small spaces, and do not have space for a large garden. There are also some really busy people out there who would like to be more "green", but think they do not have time.

Well, you do not have to let those reasons stop you. There are tons of things that you can do that do not require a lot of space or time. For instance, I used to have a lovely square foot garden, that I enjoyed ever so much. I no longer have the room for a square foot garden, but I am making the most of what I have. In our current house we have flower beds, that were filled with pine straw when we moved in. So, I moved the straw to make several little beds, and planted different vegetable plants in each bed. So, far they are doing well. I have also taken advantage of all of the flower pots that I have to plant vegetables.

It is so funny, because today when my oldest daughter and I were out, we stopped at the store and I bought her a juice. When we got home and she finished it, she brought me the bottle and told me that maybe I should use it to grow some brussel sprouts in. It is so funny, when you don't think they are listening to anything you say, you find out that they are actually taking EVERYTHING in, words and actions!!

Buy secondhand!! Just like clothes and toys, there is also secondhand curriculum out there. I know for all of you experienced homeschool parents, this is old news, but for all of the relatively new homeschool parents, this can be a super money saver.

Curriculum can be very expensive, and if you try to buy all of the extras that go along with the curriculum, it can become overwhelming. So, shop for used curriculum. I know that some of you think used curriculum must mean stuff that is all used up and written in, but that is not the case.

There are tons of homeschool parents out there who take great care of the items they purchase and even make copies of the worksheets, so they can resale the curriculum.

If you have a local homeschool group, check with them. They probably have a curriculum swap or sale at least once every year. If you do not have a local group, check the web. There are several sites that have listings for used curriculum.

Another place to check, believe it or not, is at yardsales. You would be surprised at what you can find. I know people who have been lucky enough to find entire curriculum sets. However, you are probably more likely to find a piece here and there. You can almost always find books though, and every homeschooler knows the importance of books, when you have young readers!!

So, if you are looking to save big money on your curriculum, try to find a used version.

Brandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05886640332160495966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040869366808762713.post-7899821111464322462011-07-15T15:55:00.000-07:002011-07-15T15:55:55.285-07:00Getting Ready For School!!
<img border="0" m$="true" src="http://www.sxc.hu/pic/m/a/an/andrei_122/854848_back_to_school.jpg" />
So, I don't know about you all, but I am trying my best to get ready for school. We are a homeschool family, as most of you know, and this year I will be working with four children!! I know this may not sound like a lot to some folks, but it is a pretty big task for me. Last year, I was only working with one child, so this year will be an adjustment.

So, how do we school so many kids on a budget?? Well, around this time of year, most stores run back to school specials. Grocery stores, drug stores, big box stores, you name the store, and they probably have some type of back to school special. The trick that I have found most useful is to look each week for the specials at different stores. Even if you usually only shop at one store for groceries and such, during the back to school season, it is worth it to shop around.

Most places will run weekly specials for pennies. I found some one subject notebooks for $0.15 this past week. Some stores have certain items for $0.01, you just have to look around. I try really hard to stock up when the prices are low like this, because we all know that stuff runs out. Halfway through the year, you are sure to need more glue sticks and pencils, things like that.

If you stocked up last year, and have all of your items need to start school, be sure to check the clearance sales, after the back to school season has ended and stock up for next year.

It is possible to purchase school supplies without breaking the bank, even if you are schooling several children!!

What are your favorite back to school saving strategies??
Well, what better excuse to grab a nice chocolaty cold treat, right!!

We had the fabulous opportunity to sample some really great treats. Klondike Mint Chocolate Chip Bar, Klondike What the Fudge? Brownie Sandwich, Klondike Choco Taco, and My FAVORITE REESE’S Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cups!!

<img border="0" height="135px" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhifUVGWiK2bZCO5mQ-PpfR1ckosd74ONsi2mgFaz3CUyXyfp1N62L_-C2qwbhMFh7JE7ZsmaD2ZxYh-Hpbrjy9O9oHv84i02tSkUozIoaEi3FhpMv3af_pTHRk0vq0wGBs480x6eX4Czv5/s320/Reeses+PB+Ice+Cream+Cups+Multipack.jpg" width="320px" />

I will start off with telling you all about my favorite, of course. I love all things chocolate, and when you throw ice cream into the mix, well lets just say, it is my weakness. My favorite candy is REESE's Cups, because I also LOVE all things peanut butter, so when I found out that REESE's came out with Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cups, I was THRILLED!! When my package arrived, I was like a kid in a candy store, or Ice Cream store, I guess.

Anyway, let me just tell you that this probably the best Ice cream that I have had in a very very long time. I have to admit, I did not share any of them with anyone else in the house. I did not eat them all at once, I promise, but I did eat them all!!

The Klondike ice creams were also delicious. The children loved them, and were really surprised that Mommy was giving them ice cream, so many days in a row!! The Klondike Mint Chocolate Chip was GREAT, I like the flavor of mint, and the chocolate and ice cream added to it was Divine!!

<img border="0" height="128px" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh03Wgzk8LSYclBy_tH5ARVQK3KDplbBLXTwysYlvf_YaWQRnnlJSOlTEITLk58o0Qou_5W6Hj7LxESlTKZSIF4VqH1Q0IBJGY_7sny5wZjPLYOIcEyPRvd0-RNreJBltNQr60NUqozFwpi/s320/Klondike+Bars+-+Mint+Chocolate+Chip.jpg" width="320px" />

<img border="0" height="320px" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuwnqE9UW_2YZjab1x1RqxidhghwgLQesd45HyvTsAa7vPMJdWXs1ZclyWay_rqrUbkHNLUB1jeO6HT0n8U3xD5HZXqQx0MD5VsOuEnZC1Q1UW6zLkwBtd9HeBgk_ISoOEw-CJzgN6tnf4/s320/Klondike+Choco+Taco+Multipack.jpg" width="320px" />

The Klondike What the Fudge? Brownie Sandwich was probably the favorite of the kiddos, while my husband really liked the Choco Tacos. I highly recommend all of these ice creams!! They were delicious!! I think this face sums it up!!
If you are anything like me, you probably spend the majority of it cleaning, breaking up arguments and fights, and driving "little people" everywhere!! At times I just feel overwhelmed, and to be honest, totally unmotivated!!

I hate to even admit that, but it's true. Sometimes I spend so much time worrying about what to spend my time on, that I forget the most important factor in the decision, God.

While visiting a church this past Sunday, the pastor gave a message on time. One of the things that he pointed out was that "Following your heart is not what you should do, unless your heart follows Jesus". Wow, I have to say that I have never quite thought of things this way, but I should start.

I think we all, or most of us, spend a good bit of time trying to figure out exactly what we are supposed to do with our lives. We can get so caught up in our own wants and interests that we forget that God can see the "bigger" picture, and if he can see the bigger picture, shouldn't we seek his advice and guidance. After all, we can only see what is right in front of us, we lack the ability to see over the next mountain, but God can see it all.

So, the next time you get all frazzled and are rushing here and there, take a second and stop and ask God what he wants you to do. After all, the time we have is limited, so shouldn't we spend it in the best possible way.

I am sure you guessed it, trying to find the best way to upcycle (reuse) those clothes. After all, this is a great way to save money. The clothes were give to me, and I already have the thread, so these are very inexpensive summer clothes for the girls!!

This cute little dress was made from a ladies shirt. I got the idea and pattern from Dana at Made, I love that blog. It is full of great sewing ideas and projects.

<img border="0" height="200px" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4KknOQl0JYfuxt1E1tCEGwdzm3ErPhjrvnpxiEWbD3hgCMUorrcYxeCK_EjdOJiBG3G6ZrlEm95PpY4e8KTIdAOEolV4Zre1pH_soYdlh1HVV9fx4fdvnWphy5CKmqCuBV5DZCjlZuZFr/s200/PICT2568.JPG" width="143px" />

For the entire project, it may have taken an hour, but this was my first time using this pattern. It is super simple, so if you have a chance give it a try.

<img border="0" height="200px" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_p1SRYVpOkHSkUoKOONPFjMu5fxzRtofOAmpw42ucH7LRlfeIaSTn6H6f_nrVj3cgCk8Nilz2wl8c_P1hJs4-RlhViiT-mkooBdGmXFH5B21i641XblPN2Nk3-gcTa-4-8LGJy0GFd2_v/s200/PICT2569.JPG" width="111px" />

I had this button down shirt that I love the colors of, but was not exactly my style.

<img border="0" height="150px" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEXdaDJPH37MpfsHHWeA8kviZjT72AqWDLVz-1SdC7bhkR_cLO5uhj1g7i_MaGusWcXmKYz54kgJqtX75F7Vpy4qp2dI8VfZyVpGU2z34TQu1-kdLMy_FdKql2yUKWBRqL-gN0O4w7G__U/s200/PICT2564.JPG" width="200px" />

I decided to make a dress out of it. This is how it turned out.

<img border="0" height="170px" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjZ_zSvgJo2snrMIQ4sG9My_SgE1r5Y5Wv0W4MM_-pQcCT9v96GY_zAF1AYQBckIUf35hfxCzDS57KPO5c6WbIJflkJidCy1D3Bo430Ja9mARtHF00IFYDER_IgGab3h8zM4cG3HtTd08u/s200/PICT2565.JPG" width="200px" />

I was really pretty easy, and did not take very long.

<img border="0" height="200px" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-rjhnCcyZWIz9ptWZItJ5ZOgD_QNZSBg1feY0TGndBdYUM7GmSB4fQYfW7hXcDEblIUFGWFBRL_YgKjsmeV6GNj_ocQazuuEDWMpONBzPdEnJIDvPMIufH0NtkEBJJ8nJQqrbUqwduchv/s200/PICT2566.JPG" width="150px" />
