Hot 103 Jamz’ second annual Summer Jam was a fitting heir to last year’s successful inaugural show. Featuring newer artists, Block Life, a rising homegrown duo, in addition to established stars Rick Ross and Soulja Boy, Summer Jam II brought a first class show to Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone on Saturday, June 13.

Speaking of stars and homegrown artists, the day’s festivities officially began with just such a rapper, Kansas City’s own, Tech N9ne. Select members of Tech N9ne’s fan club received special access into the venue at 3:00pm, for an opportunity to meet the star himself. This incredible opportunity was followed by the opening of the VIP club at 4:00pm. Fans with a VIP Experience pass gained early access to the venue, in addition to drink specials and private restrooms. Regular doors opened at 4:30, and the stage was set for a great evening of music.

The show kicked off to a great start thanks to Murs, a talented rapper who has toured with Tech N9ne. Murs pumped the crowed, and the excitement only continued to grow throughout the evening. A star-studded line up followed the opening performance. Black Walt took the stage next and was succeeded by Block Life, Plies, Dorrough, and Yung L.A consecutively.

An already great evening only became better when Rick Ross took the stage. He was followed by the KC King, Tech N9ne. Throughout the course of his one hour set, Tech N9ne demonstrated why he is the best selling independent rapper in the world. His performance, which, in addition to great songs, included outstanding choreography and an awesome light show; it was truly first rate. Though Tech N9ne set the bar very high indeed, he was followed by a worthy successor, Hurricane Chris. After Hurricane’s upbeat set, it was time for the evening’s headliner, Soulja Boy. Throughout his hour set, Soulja Boy wowed the crowed, providing a great ending to great day.

As always the cleaning crew and recycling team were working hard behind the scenes to maintain the venue and implement Cap Fed Park’s green initiatives. They did excellent job seeing everyone had a great time at Summer Jam II, including Mother Nature.

To conclude, Summer Jam II brought a great day of music to Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone. If next year’s Summer Jam is anything like this one (which I certainly believe it will be) it will truly be a can’t miss event.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/SandstoneAmphitheater/~4/TawJcWSA4XI" height="1" width="1"/>

Saturday, June 6, was a great day for the Greater Kansas City area. Not only did the afternoon bring relief from the cold and rainy weather of the morning, but the evening brought another excellent concert to Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone.Â

The evening started early, as the VIP club opened at 5:30 pm, a full two hours before the show. This allowed fans with a VIP Experience pass to enter the facility early and enjoy drinks and a Mix 93.3 DJ before the show. Regular doors opened at 6:30, and the excited crowd began pouring in.
Â
Taking the stage first was Brett Dennen, a budding young artist out of California. His smooth folk/pop tunes were a perfect warm-up for the evening's headliner, O.A.R. This rock band, hailing from Maryland, put on a great show on this clear, June evening. Their two hour set consisted of both classic favorites, Crazy Game of Poker and Hey Girl, for instance, in addition to new hits, such as This Town and Shattered. Â
Â
While Dennen and O.A.R. were rocking the main stage, the cleaning crew was hard at work behind the scenes.  They worked tirelessly to keep the venue clean and pleasant. Working side-by-side with the cleaning crew was the recycling team, who did a terrific job, as always, of maintaining the facility's green initiatives. O.A.R.'s green team joined in, helping make for a fun, environmentally-friendly evening.
Â
In sum, Saturday's show was another huge success for Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone, and is sure to be followed by more great concerts this summer.  So, grab your tickets and head on over to Cap Fed Park!     Â

Photo: Candice SimmonsMemorial weekend was full of food, fun and philanthropy at Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone. The Great American BBQ was a success hosting over 200 competing bbq teams, from all over the United States. Teams as far as California, Texas, Florida and North Dakota visited Cap Fed Park for their chance to win the grand prize.

It wasn't just the BBQ experts that enjoyed a fun weekend, the venue was open to the public to enjoy great BBQ, carnival rides, live music and fireworks. The GABBQ kicked off at 12pm on Friday and ended at 8pm on Sunday evening. There was the smell of BBQ for miles.

The Great American Barbecue was created in 2004, by a group of committed carnivores with a taste for BBQ and a desire for helping local charities. Since its creation, The GABBQ has become one of the premiere barbecue competitions in the nation.

DARE Festival 2009

Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone hosted the annual DARE Festival on May 14, 2009. Celebrating the accomplishments of 3000 students, the house was rocking with enthusiasm. Students from two states, 50 plus schools and 10 counties filled the amphitheater to enjoy music, bands and entertaining speakers.

Starting the festival with the Pledge of Allegiance, students stood proud as they placed their hand across their heart. Visiting speakers included several local police officials and state officials congratulating the students on their success in completing the DARE program. Retro Bill however was the star of the show. With his wacky looks and entertaining style, Retro Bill kept the kids attention throughout the day, introducing other performers and reminding the kids how important it is to say no to drugs and alcohol.

Supporting local talent, several police officials formed a cover band and had the kids off their feet rushing to the stage. The young band Clever by Accident also performed and became local celebrities in 15 minutes, signing autographs for a long time after their set. Also joining the list was country performer Christy Crook, dancing group Power and Life, Disney's Jordan Pruitt and rapper Alan Bradley. Every artist brought something to the days success; words of wisdom, talented lyrics and energy.

All students were very helpful in placing trash in its respective places and also helped the staff of Cap Fed Park continue our green initiatives and chose to place their plastic bottles and soda cans in the recycle bin instead of the trash can. When I asked one Bonner Springs student if he was having fun, he told me this was the best day ever. We hope the students will join us again next year for another successful DARE Festival.
Earth Day

The Capital Federal Park at Sandstone and dozens of other sponsors
teamed up with Bridging The Gap at their 13th Annual Earth Walk /
Earth Fest in Kansas City's scenic Theis Park on May 9th, 2009.

Earth Day in America is a celebration of the achievements of the
environmental movement's 30 years and the challenges that remain:
Black smoke may no longer pour from city stacks, nor sludge foul our
riversides, but less visible forces such as climate change and
population growth still mark the distance between present-day America
and a sustainable society.

It is that very reason for which Bridging the Gap demonstrates how
such a growing global problem can be simplified by solutions
implemented on a individual level. Suitably, the focus of this year's
festival was five specific actions that everyone in Kansas City can do
to reduce CO2 emissions and clean up our community:

1) Give up bottled water
2) Wash your laundry in cold water
3) Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs
4) Set your thermostat to 68 degrees in winter; 78 degrees in summer
5) Cut your gasoline use by one quarter

Making these changes will reduce a household's emissions by at least
4,000 pounds, that's over 15 percent! As if that wasn't motivation
enough, participants at this year's Earth Fest had a chance to win
free tickets to upcoming concerts throughout the metro area by
reciting a pledge of dedication to these five green things. The
Capital Federal Park at Sandstone thanks local promoters and partners,
Mammoth Live and Up To Eleven, for their generous support and the free
ticket giveaways!

Joined by a new accumulation of knowledge and tools of change, there
was a ubiquitous sense of community amongst attendees; the comradeship
was palpable. In the end, proving that Kansas City truly is a socially
and environmentally responsible community that encourages coming
together to work towards common goals to benefit the planet.

The achievements of both the Capital Federal Park at Sandstone's Green
Initiatives and Bridging the Gap's Earth Walk / Earth Fest demonstrate
that global climate change can be supplemented by meaningful
improvements in education and technology. We strongly believe that
the environmentalist majority has a fighting chance at success!<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/SandstoneAmphitheater/~4/X0TNR-5xE90" height="1" width="1"/>

Cap Fed Park Hosts Killer Season Opener

Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone's opening show was a success. The Killers and Wild Light were a perfect match for the perfect weather. With hundreds of calls pouring in all week regarding weather policies, the fans were prepared for the worst weather conditions. However that did not stop some die hard fan from lining up at 7:30 am for a 7:30 pm show.

The VIP club opened an hour early allowing fans with a VIP Experience pass to enter the facility early to enjoy drinks and DJ Kirby from Mix 93.3 before the show. Waiting at the entrance to the facility from the VIP club, these fans were ready to get their up front view of The Killers frontman, Brandon Flowers.

Opening band, Wild light set the tone for a wonderful night. No lightening needed to brighten up Cap Fed Park's stage, The Killers production left many in amazement. With their Vegas style flare, The Killers kicked off the show with their hit Human and continued to rock out hits that everyone came to hear.

Some fans however did not want to be in the lower section and expressed their disappointment in the closed lawn seating. Due to The Killers request Cap Fed Park @ Sandstone restricted access to the lawn, but allowed all fans to enjoy the upper seats at their leisure. What is typically sold as a reserved seat, was open as general admission. Several fans opted to upgrade to a box seat for the show for a more private experience with wait staff.

Behind the scenes our cleaning crew worked hard to keep the facility clean, our recycling team worked hard sorting trash and everyone worked hard to maintain our green initiatives that we strive so hard to maintain. Throughout the parking lot as well as the venue, fans respected our initiatives and placed their empty beer cans and plastic bottles in our recycle containers.

Right before The Killers took the stage one fan said to me, "I'm so glad Sandstone is back." We were honored to kick off the second season as Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone with The Killers. It was a success and we are ready for the remaining shows in the 2009 season.

Cap Fed Park's season opener received Kansas City Star's, Tim Finn's seal of approval in his review in Back to Rockville, "Sandstone christened its 2009 season with a bright, seismic blast. (The Killers) are loved by music fans who appreciate good rock anthems and who like to have a great time hearing them live."<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/SandstoneAmphitheater/~4/0ROe2-qfDRs" height="1" width="1"/>

Ebay Listing Reveals Some Sandstone History

Ok, this is kinda fun - I found a vintage t-shirt on Ebay this morning. It's from the Grateful Dead show at Sandstone on July 4th 1990. The cool thing is that it appears to have been designed specifically for that show - it actually reads "Sandstone" along with the date on the front of the shirt. A little further googling revealed the band's set list for that show, along with some comments about the heat, Jerry Garcia wearing cut-off jeans, and a UFO sighting (!!!?). Anyone have further information on this?

I wonder if there will be a special t-shirt design for this year's 4th of July show with Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Only one way to find out, I suppose.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/SandstoneAmphitheater/~4/hPRfFXgGs6Q" height="1" width="1"/>
