"We Are The Many" Makana Occupy Movement Protest Song.
With all the recent occupy movements going on lately it wasn't too long til somebody wrote a song about it. That somebody happens to be Makana (Matthew Swalinkavich) of Hawaii. During the APEC Summit hosted by the White House, played his protest song, "We Are The Many" in front of The President and 18 other nations. The song is rumored to be the Occupy Movement theme song.

The song sends a powerful message to the heads of government. I thought this would be a good share.

Jambo Bwana Hakuna Matata. Original drum composition and arrangement by Kimura Masato.

Jambo Bwana (in Swahili "Hello Mister") Hakuna Matata (There are no worries) is a famous song from Kenya and internationally known. This song has had so many arrangements since the 1980's up until 2004. Masato Kimura has adapted this song in his own native language (Japanese).

This is not the full song has he usually performs, but just some quick clips and cuts to help the world know about the Japanese version of Jambo Bwana Hakuna Matata.

THE SHAMIKAMI - GOD OF THE SHAMISEN

The Shamikami?? What?? Well you already know Discovery is all about world ethnic samples, but what if you take an ancient Japanese instrument like the Shamisen and mix and slice those sounds over the different genres of today's music scene; what would you get? Something upbeat, but soothing to the soul to say the least.

A while back I made a demo track crossing shamisen cuts over hip-hop which I later uploaded to Youtube. That video was seen by no other than the Japanese-American shamisen master Kevin Kmetz who later contacted me about a "new sound" he was interested in. This is how the party started.

After looking at the video he sent as a sample, I was so impressed I made a video of his shamisen Starwars theme cover synced to the opening credits Starwars style. I was surprised out how many people took interest. The old/new sound is starting to have a loyal following.

Anyways here is a video from Kevin's channel @shamikami on YouTube. It him playing shamisen over Eminem's "WHEN I`M GONE". It is pretty awesome I think. If you like it too just click on the video and subscribe to the shamikami. You won't hate yourself for it, I promise ;)

Though personally I have grown out of the techno crave, it is still fun to mix with and "loop around" every now and then.

Do you remember all those pings, bongs, and tweaks in the old 8 Bit video games? Well over here at Discovery we took all those classic sounds and made the 8 Bit Family series sample CDs. Both of the CDs have been best sellers year after year.

Now I have decided to make a pair of shoes from those awesome 8 Bit characters that really made the sample CD series take off.

As most of you know I recently started a t-shirt shop over at Spreadshirt, but the only downside to that was there was no way to make sneakers. I did a little bit of researching and found that Zazzle offered this service. So now I have two stores. lol.

Discovery Sound has gone and done it. Turned its sample cd collection into Sample CD Tees. Now you can wear those authentic ethnic logos on a Tee and show off that love for world ethnic music.

The name of the store is Sample CD Tees and you kind find it over at Spreadshirt.com. I just did it as a joke, but was surprised at the reaction the shirts have gotten.

I just opened the shop last week and already the sales have been rolling in. I am still in the process of getting all of the sample CD images made into tees and by the end of April there should be a really good selection to choose from.

Anyways I know I don't have a lot of readers, cause let's face it, sampling community is small but loyal. Thanks to all of you who continue support the sampling industry and Discovery Sound. Looking forward to another great 20 years. That is right we turn 20 in August. We been around the block a few times.

VinyLism - Spinning Records

Here is a demo I made using the Vinylism sample cd. There are so many variations record spins on this sample cd that I could probably make 10 more videos with it and still not be satisfied.
I added some video footage I bought online. Trying to sync the video with the demo I made was super hard. I will probably never attempt that again. I know DJs and Vinylists would love to get their hands on this badboy.

From the Asian republic of TUVA, the amazing style of overtone singing has finally been properly captured as a mystical and marvelous sample library, along with the traditional Tuvan stringed instruments ‹Igil› and ‹Doshpuluur›.

In the Republic of TUVA, the mountain basin is populated with lakes and rivers. The inspiring landscape is home to the powerful and beautiful voices of ‹Khoomei›.

A long-awaited ‹Khoomei› samples have finally arrived, encompassing 154 files in ACID|WAV and REX2 formats.

This collection features samples of ‹Khoomei› , male and female throat singers, and two types of stringed instruments: ‹Doshpuluur› and ‹Igil›. All sound files are presented in both 44.1 kHz/16-bit and 96 kHz/24-bit formats.

Tuvan Sounds on the disc:

KHOOMEI :
A type of throat singing with a distinct fundamental and an overtone melody, used in folk music from Tuva.

DOSHPULUUR :
A three-stringed instrument with fretless similar to a banjo, but with the warm, organic sound of wood and goat skin.

IGIL :
A two-stringed, bowed and fretless instrument. Deeply connected with the mythology of the horse, the most important animal in Tuvan culture. The Igil sounds like a cross between violin and cello, and is often used to imitate the sound and rhythms of the horse.

The Republic of TUVA:

It is a member of the Russian Federation, located in the Tannu Mountains on the Siberian border in northwestern Mongolia. The capital is Kyzyl. The population of 308,000 lives in the area of 170,500 square kilometers. The area is a mountain basin with numerous lakes and rivers. Many of Tuvans are still cattle-breeding nomads.

Shamisen Meets Hip Hop

SKYPE CUSTOMER SERVICE

This is one of my rare off the wall subjects, but I just had to let the world know.
You see I have been using Skype for my business for well over a year now and it has been extremely helpful especially when continued business relations with my distributors all over the world is a must.

I originally signed up for the Unlimited World subscription plan which at the time included three phone numbers that I could use along with the subscription. I chose a UK phone number for my partners in the UK, a US number for business relations in America, and finally a Japanese number so that when I was overseas my Japanese customers could still get in touch even if they didn't have Skype.

Well sometime last month I upgraded credit cards and what not for my business and went to my SKYPE account to update payment information. Due to my surprise it could not be done. I would have to cancel my subscription and start a new one for the new credit card, but this time the numbers were not included. I had to buy each one separately. This of course really pissed me off. I email the customer service at Skype only to be told sorry and that was that.

I was so pissed that after all the time I had spent at Skype I was going to get shafted for some new policy that shouldn't of mattered when all I wanted to do was update my account info.

Well low and behold I get an email from the Office of the President of Skype this morning. I almost thought it was a hoax email looking at the return email address, but turned out to be legit. Skype was going out of their way to help me, by giving me a free year subscription including the original 3 phone numbers I had signed up for. Just when I thought the world of customer service was coming to an end Skype redeems themselves as a customer caring organization.

This is by far the best example of making the paying customer happy and fixing a problem quick, fast and in a hurry.

I can honestly say I actually won't be leaving Skype for a long time. So any of yous who had your doubts with Skype customer service let me just say that if you take the time to let them know they will take the time to show you the best customer service still available today. And there is not a lot of places today that really understand the meaning of customer. But no doubt in my mind Skype knows best.
