Thailand is still a rather exotic destination when it comes to yacht charters. In most cases, you will only see a marina on the departure of your bareboat charter and again upon your return …or not at all! Wind And Weather – What Can You Expect?

While the average wind speeds are not that much on the first glimpse, they can vary considerably during one sailing day. Passing through squalls are common and a change of wind speeds from 8 knots to 25 knots in almost no time is not much of an exception. Of course these squalls are approaching visibly and an experienced skipper will reef down the boat accordingly before that sudden change in wind speed occurs. Another challenge of this sailing area is the inaccuracy of the chart material. Blindly relying on GPS and digital charts is definitely not an option. However, this is the perfect opportunity to apply the traditional navigation skills you have learned obtaining your skippers license. Taking into consideration the type of yachts that would thrive on the Andaman Sea, Island Cruises wants emphasize the extra features and modifications on the Cyclades 50.5 that make her suitable for sailing in tropical climates. A full cockpit bimini has been installed in order to provide shelter from the sun, making this main area comfortable and protected. Understandably, the weather in Thailand can get quite sunny, so shade for each person essential! The cockpit is very spacious and can comfortably fit upwards to 10 people. Snorkel gear is also provided should the blue waters of the Andaman look too tempting not to swim in.

The Phi Phi Islands are probably the best known and most visited small island group in Thailand. The two main islands, Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh, are located approximately 40km south east of Phuket. Their popularity derives from being the place where the movie “The Beach” (adapted from the novel by author Alex Garland) was filmed, exposing the stunning beauty of Maya Bay to the world.
The two giant limestone islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide a great backdrop to the surrounding white sandy beaches and calm, crystal clear waters offering some excellent snorkeling opportunities for all participants of this luxury yacht cruise. The entire island group consists of 6 islands all together.

Phi Phi Don

Koh Phi Phi Don is the only permanently inhabited island in the group and is as well the biggest. It has many beautiful white sandy beaches which are great for relaxing and snorkeling. Ton Sai Bay stretches for 2km alongside the steep limestone cliff and is home to Phi Phi town, officially named Ton Sai Village. Before the arrival of tourism, it was a small Muslim and Sea-Gypsy fishing village. Now it is a bustling town consisting of hotels, bars, shops and restaurants catering to the needs of the visitors of this island. There is a nice walk to a lookout point with views across both islands. Also on Koh Phi Phi Don is Monkey Beach, which you will visit on your luxury yacht cruise. This particular beach is inhabited by monkeys which the guests can feed.

Phi Phi Leh

Koh Phi Phi Leh is a smaller and more scenic island than Phi Phi Don and is not inhabited. The spectacular cliffs that drop for about 100 meters into the crystal clear waters are covered with green foliage. It is also home to Maya Bay where “The Beach” was filmed which has some excellent snorkeling. On the east coast of Koh Phi Phi Ley is Hong Pileh, a stunning jade green lagoon surrounded by sheer cliffs and many caves which you will pass on your luxury yacht cruise. One of these caves is the well known “Viking Cave” with ancient rock paintings of boats. These paintings were believed to represent Viking boats but scientific research has proven this wrong. Nevertheless, the name prevails.

The Racha islands are located approximately 18 km south of the starting point of your luxury yacht cruise, Ao Chalong on Phuket. In comparison to the very popular Phi Phi islands, the two Racha islands can almost be called an ‘insider’s tip’, making them an ideal destination for a relaxing luxury yacht cruise away from the crowds.

Additionally worth mentioning are Siam Bay, Ao Tawan Tok and especially Bungalow Bay, a U-shaped bay with a sandy beach and crystal clear water that is perfect for swimming.

Racha Noi

This island is a perfect destination for a yacht charter. Koh Raya Noi is a uninhabited rocky island with difficult access to get ashore. However, it provides several secluded coves to moor the yacht in to relax surrounded by stunning scenery and to snorkel the beautiful reefs the island is fringed with. Located on the southern tip is a stunning little beach with a sand bar connecting to a rocky outcrop when the tide is right. This is one of our favorite destinations to bring our guests to on their luxury yacht cruise.
