Game Designer

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented and enthusiastic game designer for the World of Warcraft team. This position will involve the design and implementation of creature placement, behavior, encounters, and events. The ideal candidate will have experience in game design, a strong aptitude for critical thinking and analysis, boundless creativity, a strong visual aesthetic, and a passion for playing games.

Requirements

* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Ability to work well in a team environment
* Ability to work well under deadlines
* Solid math and organizational skills
* Ability to work creatively in a demanding technical environment
* Expertise in World of Warcraft gameplay
* Absolute passion for playing and making computer games

Pluses

* Dungeon and raiding experience in other MMOs
* Familiarity with high-level scripting languages such as Lua or Python
* Leadership position within an MMO guild
* Professional experience as a game designer

Now my oral and written skills many of you have come accross at some point. I happen to think I am a bit more articulate than most, especially in writing. Teamwork is not an issue for me, and I happen to thrive under deadlines (what writer doesn’t). I am definitely organized and can improve at it, and my math is not bad. I’m sure I can comprehend math and they aren’t expecting some sort of calculus equations. As for passion for making video games I think I couldn’t have more drive to work at Blizzard, it would literally be a dream job for me.

My dungeon experience in other MMO’s might be a little bit of an issue. I have done dungeons in Asheron’s call and City of Heroes, but not real hardcore gaming really. The scripting languages would be my major Achilles heel here. I don’t know much about them but I would be willing to take courses or read up on them to at least understand what I was seeing. I have a firm understanding of logic and I have worked with more basic codes that would help me understand how scripting works. I’ve had some leadership responsibilities in MMO guilds. I haven’t done too much, but I know the position of managing players and understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities. Lastly, I don’t have experience with game design outside of beta testing a handful of games.

So I ask anyone who reads this; do you think I am qualified? Depending on when I get accepted I’d be showing up as a college dropout (I’m currently in college). I have the passion and the imagination and aesthetic for it, but does my lack of formal education or technical expertise weaken me too much? How should I tailor a resume or cover letter for this? If I am going to apply for this job I am putting a LOT of effort into my application. I am willing to immigrate and move, that isn’t an issue for me.
