One thing I'm realizing as I get older, is that you can never be too adult to play dress-up. I recently stopped by to see SFS alum Ashley at her Nob Hill apartment in San Francisco. Every nook and cranny of her abode is decorated with vintage treasures collected over the span of nearly a decade.

I styled Ashley in a vintage paisley dress reminiscent of one that I photographed a couple summers back in the Mission. One thing that holds true about San Francisco fashion: Vintage never goes out of season.

The blue suede pumps are important to add a pop of color, but I choose to keep the rest of her accessories decidedly playful and demure. It might be 66F and sunny in California this week, but the fur trim jacket she's wearing is my nod to winter.

Dyanna found this adorable Man Morsel on a chilly New York day, and she managed to get a decently sharp photo despite her shivering hands! We love his unique newsboy style. His outfit is reminiscent of fashion from the 1910s-30s yet it's put together from all contemporary pieces, so it doesn't look like a costume. The color selection is also very classic and effective--and a refreshing dose of brightness in the crowds of New Yorkers wearing mostly black.

Happy New Year, morsels! Dyanna and I have enjoyed our holiday season respite, and are eager to bring to you new street fashion and style this year. I thought that we'd bring things back to where we started for our first post of 2012, so today's adorable feature is a style spotlight on a San Francisco vintage-aholic, Shannon. I've included some extra photos of Shannon's charming San Francisco apartment, and some of the lovely decor within it. I'll be posting two more of Shannon's cozy winter looks the next few days.

0. Like many San Francisco girls, Shannon has a love for all things vintage. She let me witness her vast all-vintage wardrobe, which filled several closets and dressers to the brim. This passion for unique fashion treasures is by no means exclusive to San Francisco, but it is definitely a major part of San Francisco's fashion culture.

1. My favorite element of Shannon's style is her signature motif--the abacus, which she incorporates into just about every one of her outfits. She has a collection of them, gifted from friends. It is a great symbol, since it represents learning and growth.

2. Shannon also appreciates whimsical things. I was rather amused by her miniature piano.

3. The view from her apartment is majestic. It overlooks the Panhandle/Divisadero area, and the trees you see at the highest point in the far distance are where the famous Haight Street area is located.

4. The final photo is of her collection of monthly muni bus/metro passes that she has collected since she first came to San Francisco.

I know it can sound a little hackneyed, but I just couldn’t let Christmas pass me by without making a trip to see the 74-foot spruce at Rockefeller Center. It’s almost heartwarming to watch tourists from all four corners coalesce in New York to share in such a simple holiday tradition. (Almost).

For its part, Midtown puts on a wonderful and varied light display. All of these pictures were taken within just a few short blocks of one another. It’s one of the parts of the city where even the street vendors will go all out with holiday spirit.

For those of you who can’t be in New York with us, I hope these sparkling lights add a little extra joy to your season. And although it’s been said many times, many ways—JT and I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

People have been bundling up lately, so I've taken to seeking out the most intriguing or adorably layered morsels. My eyes were drawn to her leather caged tote, which remind me of those Yves Saint Laurent caged shoes that were the new hotness not so long ago. (Just do an image search for: "YSL caged shoes" and you'll see a plethora of examples).

I also just appreciate the striking enigmatic quality of her look.

Man Morsel Monday - Spread Collar + Warm Layers + Leather Gloves - Prince & Mott (New York)

I photographed this Man-Morsel a while back during the mild autumn days, and ran into him again very recently--dressed appropriately for the colder weather we have now. I want to point out the spread collar shirt he's wearing. Spread collars have quickly replaced standard point collars on most stylish Man-Morsels I've seen around the city. They're very modern and classy without being ostentatious.

I love that his style has a stark minimalism, and shows an evolution. His hair is longer, his beard is more full, he's got warm layers, and most covetable of all--he's wearing some luxurious fitted leather gloves. I've noticed a considerable increase in the popularity of driving gloves, and gloves in general--ever since Ryan Gosling wore them in the recent film, DRIVE. (Go figure). Cozy trappings are so necessary right now, especially in a place with cold weather like New York. Winter is coming.

P.S. A little tidbit for you here, if you look in the background, you'll see some other streetstyle bloggers on the corner basically doing the same thing I was doing at the same moment. There's so many streetstyle bloggers here in New York, I'm constantly spotting my contemporaries during excursions into SoHo. This is definitely something new for me, since this rarely happens in San Francisco. Do I consider them rivals or competition? Not really. Most of the time, other streetstyle bloggers photograph entirely different fashions than Dyanna and I do. Besides--the cream always rises to the top. Stay stylish, morsels. ;)

I call this kind of girl a 'Betty'. She has that Betty Page pin-up inspired look (but fully dressed). Betties always have the dark hair, straight bangs, and usually something in leopard print. It's a very distinctive look, like gothic or preppy, but more specific and even more uncommon. (Although there are a copious amount of Betties in San Francisco--go figure.) This morsel, however--was cooling her heels in New York's Nolita neighborhood. Her look is a particularly clean and well-executed Betty, and her coat is divine. She had me at pearl brooches.

Before I get a flood of emails from the human-wikipedia crowd--let me address the fact that some might classify today's morsel as a rockabilly look. I am trying not to pigeonhole anyone too much since people tend to get upset when I do that. I define rockabilly as more of a music-scene/lifestyle than a fashion aesthetic. I have no idea what music she listens to or how she lives--so all I can do is cite specific concepts that have obviously inspired her look, and the fact that there are definitely a handful of feisty morsels that adhere to this unmistakable style. Does that make sense? I hope so. Stay stylish, faithful reader.

People ask us all the time--which city do we like better: San Francisco or New York? The answer is, it depends on what specific aspect you're asking about. In general, there is no comparison since it's like comparing Big Apples and California Oranges. What we can tell you, are the differences we have come to notice--which can help you decide for yourself.

Today's effervescent morsel was photographed on one of those sunny San Francisco Mission District days. That's one of the big differences between SF and NY--the weather. NY has the 4 classic seasons, with extremely hot summers and extremely chilly winters--as opposed to SF's almost year-round relatively steady climate. NY's weather is usually consistent in any of it's neighborhoods and boroughs--but SF's hills create little microclimates, causing temperature and wind variations in almost every one of it's different neighborhoods. San Francisco's Mission District is often warmer than the rest of the city.

She's wearing such a classically San Francisco style outfit too. She's mixed vintage pieces and cute basics with plenty of black, and she's not afraid to strut out with some sexy details like her leather skirt (which has been a popular trend this year), peek-a-boo blouse, and those ripped tights--because, as a great man once said:

"California...knows how to party."

Roosevelt Island Tram - Cabin in the Sky - New York (NYC) 60th & 2nd ave

We photographed a street style morsel here before, right on the corner near this Air Tram to Roosevelt Island. This is one of those wondrous things about Manhattan--happening upon something like this in the middle of the city. The funny thing is--not many tourists ride this tram, even though it only costs the same $2.50 fee per ride (one way) that the subways and buses cost.

I guess people would prefer to cram into Times Square to see flashing lights and Applebees, TGIFridays, OliveGarden, etc...and going to the top of Rockefeller Center costs $25! So if you'd like a nice sky-high view of the city for a tenth the price--I highly recommend this. Although, I did notice the locals that actually use this tram to get to and from the island seem put out from people like us taking photos. Well...I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden.

Wearing a bright jewel-tone skirt in December will make you shine in the crowds of black coats. Her look has the slightest hint of disheveled-ness that gives the polished pieces just the right amount of authenticity. You get a true sense that she's a put-together-girl, working hard in Manhattan.

This BLK DNM leather jacket makes its second appearance on our blog. It must be the new hotness.

Compare today's boho chic styling which makes use of a long pleated maxi skirt, to the preppy-rocker incarnation we posted a few weeks back (in the link above). Both are great examples of how to incorporate a leather jacket into your winter look this season.

Holiday Window Displays (SoHo, New York)

I couldn’t be more excited to be spending Christmas in Manhattan for the first time! Coming from perpetually temperate California, it’s still quite a novelty to be experiencing ‘real’ seasons. And now that December’s finally upon us, it can only mean two things: blasting “Last Christmas” on repeat and imbibing heroic amounts of eggnog.

For those still holding fast to your Thanksgiving leftovers, we dedicate today’s post to you. It’s time to kick start your holiday spirit! Whether you prefer a traditional nutcracker or a psychedelic reindeer, today’s offering of holiday window displays has a little something for everyone.

I took these photos yesterday in SoHo, but this is sure to be just the beginning. We’ll try to capture window trimmings in the various shopping districts as it gets closer to Christmas. I personally can’t wait to see the museum-worthy displays on Fifth Avenue!

I had pretty much finished shooting for the day, since the sun set and I was quite cold after wandering about SoHo for hours on end--when this luxurious morsel crossed my path. I decided to try and take a photograph despite the lack of available light.

Her Louboutin booties are custom-modified, she had the top of them taken down to the way they are now, changing them from boots to booties. Being a person who has to get 99% of his garments altered, I was duly impressed to see someone who has gotten shoes altered. I didn't even know that was possible!
