On 31 May at 17.30, you are warmly invited to a great seminar on measuring social impact. In the context of social entrepreneurship, we’ll be looking into why and how to measure social outputs & outcomes, and how to value impact in monetary terms.

We will explore various methods for measuring social impact including, Social Return of Investment (SROI), a method applied for measuring social and environmental values currently not reflected in conventional financial calculations, and Progress out of Poverty Index (PPI), a tool used to measure poverty levels of groups/individuals and changes in poverty levels over time.

This seminar will support you in developing a deeper understanding of the impact your work has on the society and the environment, and therefore allow you to more effectively communicate the beneficial value of your work to clientele, investors, entrepreneurs, governments, public servants, and public at large.

The event will feature an array of experts specializing in various methods of measuring social impact, as well as investor perspectives with real case examples.

In addition, we will have 6 brilliant entrepreneurs, who are graduating from the SE Outreach Accelerator Program, pitch their startup ideas. In the last two months, each of the 6 entrepreneurs brought in a different perspective and approach into the work of poverty reduction while addressing social or environmental challenges in emerging markets and taking large steps towards reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

We will start and end with an opportunity to mingle and network! We look forward to having you, and celebrating the Graduates of the 2012 SE Outreach Accelerator!

The event will be held in English.

Last week, we held the SE BAR and Outreach seminar series. Our speaker for this seminar was Tobias Edström from Business Models Inc, and former Sales Director for Spotify. He shared his inspiring story and talked about the importance of Business Model Innovation in a rapidly and constantly changing market place. He spoke about passion and drive to succeed and the importance of NOT rushing through the steps when starting your business. Tobias emphasized the importance of finding support rather than investments, and the pivotal effect your networks will play in raising the profile of your startup. What were the most important takeaways? What is most important to drive you forward?

1) Your desire to get there (wanting it, BADLY), 2) Its all about the business model, 3) Proper execution, 4) Mean & Lean (don’t blow all your cash, bootstrapping), and 5) Its all about the network. Don’t wait, start your business model innovation right now, today.Check out our Facebook page for pictures!

In addition, during the event, our Accelerator social entrepreneurs took the center stage and gave a 1-minute pitch to promote their innovative startups! Below, take a look at the opening remarks by SE Outreach Program Director, Emma Rung, followed by pitches from our Accelerator team!

On Monday, Team SE Outreach was visited by a whole bunch of lovely people. Maja Frankel from Ashoka came and gave us answers to the questions that keeps us awake at nights. She talked about how to keep the fire burning in the business, how to find the energy you need to succeed.

The quote of the day: “Take it as spaghetti!”

Monica Lorensson came from UNDP and talked about the Millenium goals and I am very happy that Dump Tees actually are working towards theese goals in a positive way.

Victoria joined the team, finally!

Accelerator Program, Day 2: Today was intense. Spending the day with Nick Jankel has put us all on the edge. It has lead to a depth of perception, none of us expected.

We learned new expressions, such as ‘breakthrough insights/propositions/opportunities’, the ‘innovative switches’, the triple bottom lines (economic, environmental and social) and even the quadruple bottom lines (as Nick says: profit, planet, people, play). We heard about the 5 Fs of social entrepreneurship (fear, fame, fortune, frustration, and freedom), and the dangers of making assumptions when creating a vision for any social enterprise.

Importantly, we all examined our purpose in this life and this world, including our passions, skills and talents. The social entrepreneurs questioned the purpose and vision of their startups, and checked if there is a balance between the heart of their individual vision and their organizational vision.

One of our Social Entrepreneurs, Martha Zanches of TREO, offered to share her thoughts on today’s process:

“If somebody had asked me this morning about my startup’s purpose, I could have answered that question with a single sentence, maybe two. One thing was sure: I had an answer.

At 9:30am today, Nick Jankel entered the lecture room. A seemingly inconspicuous man, who had just arrived from England to give us answers– I assumed– for how we can develop our ideas. Big mistake on my part to make any assumptions, as I learned later, that Nick was here to hand out answers.

After 10 minutes of listening to him, I began to feel fear, which I had avoided in the last months. I questioned my startup, which has been shocking. I widened my list of questions, which was terrifying. Wondering if I am proposing a solution to the wrong problem is going to be my nightmare tonight.

Eight hours later, I am writing this to thank Nick– who is now perhaps smiling, flying back to London, knowing he has made an impact– for planting the seed of the most creative, innovative, frustrating, productive, and unavoidable fears that a newborn idea (and its purpose) needs!

As I finish this, many thoughts cross my mind… has anyone seen my purpose?”

Martha Zanchez, April 11, 2012, Stockholm,Sweden

Inspiring words indeed. From chaos emerges creativity; in the space between chaos and order emerges leadership with a radically innovative potential. Its always worth remembering that if you are not failing, you are not innovating.

For more information on Nick Jankel and his work check out WECREATE. You can also tune into some creative visualization/meditation tracks that Nick created ‘to boost your leadership potential’.

Continue following us on this amazing journey! Tomorrow the Accelerator Team will be going to the Stockholm School of Economics. Emma Rung, SE Outreach Director, will be speaking about the SE Outreach Accelerator Program, and Patrik will pitch his startup Dump Tees. At 12:00, those who wish will attend a seminar, ‘Invest in Sustainable Future’.

‘The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.’

‘Crazy Ones’ 1997 Apple commercial (TV)

Eight social entrepreneurs started an inspiring journey today. Emma Rung, Program Director of SE Outreach, and Shawn Westcott, Chairman of SE Forum, officially launched the 2012 SE Outreach Accelerator program this morning. The Apple ‘Think Different’ commercial, Crazy Ones, propelled everyone into a wired and inspired zone for the day.

We are proud to welcome 8 social entrepreneurs, representing 6 startups into the program: MoWoza, I Love Spam, Powerfy/Sunny People, Bridgit, TREO, and Dump Tees.

In the next 8 weeks, each social entrepreneur will dig deeper into his and her creative potential to emerge ever stronger and clear about the final shape their startup will take. It is indeed inspiring that each startup brings in a different perspective and approach into the work of poverty reduction, with focus on alleviating social or environmental challenges in emerging markets. The overarching goal is to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Today—Day 1 of the Accelerator Program—was led by a skilled process leader, Andréa Råsberg, and focused on the SE Accelerator team getting to know each other and getting to know oneself through a series of individual reflections on inner motivations, passions and aspirations. The day was carefully crafted through an inspiring set of activities, including drawing, music, sharing, conversation, and reflection, which set a stimulating tone for the 8-weeks ahead.

Tomorrow, Nick Jankel of WECREATE will take the group on an exciting ride to accelerate their ideas to the maximum, through processes on leadership, innovation, and co-creation.

On 7 March, the SE Outreach Accelerator program was launched, officially opening the program application process. The event drew in a talented crowd of 100+ people, among them social entrepreneurs, startup business owners, media, researchers, potential Accelerator participants, and more. The Accelerator, will be the first “boot camp” in Sweden for entrepreneurs aiming to change the world.

In a beautifully candle lit room at The Hub, the evening, which aimed to inspire, featured speakers from Solvatten, Gynius, and Peepoople, who addressed and presented solutions to alarming societal and environmental challenges such as access to safe drinking water, reproductive health, and sanitation. Staffan Landin of Gapminder, presented global trends on human health and development.

SE Outreach Program Director, Emma Rung, closed the official part of the evening. She shared her vision for the Accelerator program, and a deeper insight on the content and implications for the chosen Accelerator entrepreneurs. The program team of coaches and mentors were presented as well, which include experts such as Maja Frankel, Björn Söderberg, Göran Carstedt, Staffan Landin, Eliza Kücükaslan, Ylva Strander and Jonas Pinzke, in addition to many more!

The Accelerator program will undoubtedly be a unique experience and a tremendous opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills, advance the individual startup idea, and collaborate with other social entrepreneurs. The aim of the program is to create sustainable business operations with high-impact solutions to the world‘s social and environmental problems.

In the next few weeks, 5 entrepreneurs will be selected to join the Accelerator. Within the intense 8-week training, each entrepreneur will 1) receive individual coaching, 2) learn about ideal business model solutions, 3) develop business communication and advertising skills, 4) how to manage financial planning, and finally 5) how to understand, identify, and navigate local markets. To learn more about the program click here.

Application deadline is fast approaching (19 March), so apply today as spaces are filling up. The program will begin on 10 April and end on 31 May with ‘Investor Day’, where entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to pitch their ideas to potential funders and investors.
